In the instant before the sound reached An Huaigu and Xiao Xing’s ears, Bai Moqing cast a spell to seal their hearing and returned to her own office.
It happened in only a moment. An Huaigu noticed nothing, but Xiao Xing sensed Bai Moqing’s movement.
From the corner of her eye, she glanced toward the bedroom behind the screen. Her brows drew together, and she asked coldly, “You like Bai Moqing?” She stepped closer to An Huaigu and looked down at her from above.
An Huaigu’s little heart trembled. She stepped back twice, brushed her hair aside to hide the panic in her heart, and smiled. “Ah Xing, you look so scary. I was just joking. I’ve only known Little Bai for a few days. I only have a good impression of her. I don’t like her yet.”
Xiao Xing immediately withdrew her pressure. “Mm.”
Women really changed faces faster than flipping a book, An Huaigu complained inwardly. Then she suddenly remembered that all these years, Xiao Xing did not seem to have any friends. She only indulged An Huaigu.
Xiao Xing’s relationship with the Xiao family was also complicated and unclear. No one knew what position she held in the Xiao family. They only knew the entire Xiao family treated Xiao Xing with deep respect, while Xiao Xing had never been close to any of them.
Putting all these signs together…
“Ah Xing, you don’t really like me, do you?”
Seeing that Xiao Xing’s expression did not change, and that she even looked as if she was encouraging her to keep talking, An Huaigu grew bolder. “Ah Xing, if you like me, tell me early so I can reject you. You know my younger sister really likes you…”
Xiao Xing was speechless. She turned, walked to the desk, and picked up a document. “I am going out. Do as you like.”
In An Huaigu’s eyes, this became avoidance. Thinking of the secretary issue, An Huaigu quickly followed behind Xiao Xing. “Ah Xing, we haven’t finished talking about the secretary. Are you really going to make Little Bai your secretary? She doesn’t fit…”
Seeing Xiao Xing turn her sharp gaze on her, An Huaigu quickly shut her mouth. “I’ll go work.”
Xiao Xing entered Tang Yue’s office, handed the document to Tang Yue, and instructed, “Have Human Resources send this out.”
“Yes, President Xiao.” Tang Yue opened it and glanced inside. Internal selection for the president’s chief secretary. She raised her head in confusion and watched President Xiao leave. Why would President Xiao suddenly think of selecting a secretary from within the company, instead of hiring a professional secretary from outside?
Thinking of how President Xiao had often gone to the archive room these past two days, Tang Yue lifted an eyebrow. So it was for her.
An Huaigu had already left. Thinking of Bai Moqing, Xiao Xing quickly returned to the office. Bai Moqing happened to walk out from the bedroom, and their gazes met. Bai Moqing explained, “I heard Sister An was here. I was afraid she would misunderstand, so I stayed inside a little longer.”
Xiao Xing pondered. Her cool gaze fixed on Bai Moqing, as if she had seen through her thoughts, but she still deliberately asked, “Afraid she would misunderstand what?”
“No… nothing. President Xiao, is there anything else you need me to do? If not, I’ll go downstairs.”
“Nothing else.” Xiao Xing answered lightly. But when Bai Moqing turned to leave, she suddenly called her back. “Who called you?”
Bai Moqing’s steps paused. Her heart, already rising and falling, had not yet calmed before it suddenly jumped again. Hadn’t she already sealed Xiao Xing’s hearing? How had Xiao Xing still heard it?
Suppressing her panic, she turned back. “President Xiao, did you hear wrong? My phone didn’t ring. If it had, wouldn’t Sister An have heard it?”
“That is true.” Xiao Xing walked up to Bai Moqing, took out her phone, unlocked it, and handed it over. “Save your number in it.”
Asking for her number in such a commanding tone? Why did that make her heart move a little…
Seeing Bai Moqing not move, Xiao Xing raised the hand holding the phone slightly, pulling Bai Moqing back to herself.
Bai Moqing quickly took the phone, lowered her head, and entered her number. Her reddened ear tips moved shyly. Then she called herself.
The phone in her pocket rang. Bai Moqing took it out, hung up, and returned Xiao Xing’s phone. “Done, President Xiao.” Xiao Xing looked at her and reached out to take Bai Moqing’s phone.
Right in front of Bai Moqing, Xiao Xing opened the call history. It clearly showed a call that had come in five minutes earlier. The saved name was Dr. Xue. Call time: one minute and twenty-seven seconds.
Being caught lying on the spot made Bai Moqing’s face turn completely red. Just as she was wondering how to explain, Xiao Xing merely opened the newest call record, saved her own name into it, and returned the phone.
“President Xiao…” Bai Moqing did not know whether she still needed to explain the call. Xiao Xing had already taken back her own phone and turned toward the desk. With her back to Bai Moqing, she said, “Go work.”
The voice was cool, temperatureless, and without fluctuation. Bai Moqing could not see Xiao Xing’s expression, nor could she hear any emotion in her tone. She stood there, wanting to speak and stopping herself, hesitating and hesitating. In the end, she explained nothing and left.
Hearing the door close, Xiao Xing raised her head and frowned. She actually did not explain.
Returning to the office, Bai Moqing saw An Huaigu smiling brightly at her the moment she entered. “Little Bai, where did you go? I have been waiting for you.”
An Huaigu lifted the kraft paper bag beside the desk and walked over. “I brought you something.”
One who showed sudden kindness was either wicked or a thief. Thinking of what An Huaigu had said in Xiao Xing’s office, Bai Moqing quickly refused. “Sister An, I can’t accept your things.”
An Huaigu set the paper bag on the desk, opened it, took out two cans, and showed them to Bai Moqing. “They aren’t for you. They’re for your little cat. Tuna cans.”
Bai Moqing: “…”
“All right, take them home for your cat.” An Huaigu put the cans back. Seeing Bai Moqing hesitate, she winked at her and flirted, “If you feel embarrassed, you can treat me to dinner. A new hot pot place opened nearby. Authentic beef-tallow hot pot.”
She pushed the bag toward Bai Moqing. “Then it’s settled. When I finish work, I’ll come find you.” Not giving Bai Moqing a chance to refuse, she turned and walked toward the door. Before leaving, she looked back and stressed, “You must wait for me. I’ll be back before the end of the workday.”
After work, when Bai Moqing carried the paper bag and followed An Huaigu into the hot pot restaurant, she finally realized that Sister An had gone in a big circle, but her final goal was to eat dinner with her.
If An Huaigu had asked directly like the previous times, Bai Moqing would definitely have refused again.
Beef tallow covered with chili, Sichuan peppercorns, and spices rolled in the hot pot. An Huaigu picked up a slice of tender mutton, dipped it into the pot for a couple of swishes, touched it to sesame oil and soy sauce, and put it in her mouth.
“Little Bai, aren’t you eating?” An Huaigu could not stop eating. Through the rising steam, she noticed that Bai Moqing was only quietly drinking water while watching her eat.
Bai Moqing was honest. “I can’t eat spicy food.”
“You can’t eat spicy food, but you still came with me?” An Huaigu stopped her chopsticks, moved.
Bai Moqing smiled. “Thank you for buying fish cans for my cat.”
Her gentle eyes, faint smile, and completely different attitude from the office made An Huaigu feel her heartbeat speed up. She covered her chest, where a little deer seemed to be bumping wildly. Slow down, slow down.
Remembering the purpose of bringing Bai Moqing here, An Huaigu quickly drank some iced lemon water to press down the stir in her heart. “Little Bai, President Xiao told me she wants to transfer you to her side as a secretary. What do you think?”
Before Bai Moqing could answer, she said, “After entering the company, you have the right to refuse a transfer. I know the archive room has no real future. If you want to go, I will agree. If you don’t want to go, I will definitely keep you.”
After spending these days together, An Huaigu knew what kind of person Bai Moqing was. She liked reading and being alone. If Bai Moqing did not take the initiative to speak to her, she could remain quiet forever.
Bai Moqing had already known about this, but she still thought before answering An Huaigu. “I like the archive room.”
Hearing this, the stone in An Huaigu’s heart fell. She smiled comfortably. “I knew you liked staying in the archive room. Our office won’t have scheming and fighting like other offices. I will take good care of you.”
After eating for half an hour, they finally finished.
An Huaigu wanted to drive Bai Moqing home, but Bai Moqing refused. Watching Bai Moqing get into a taxi, An Huaigu drove away.
Standing before the floor-to-ceiling window, Xiao Xing withdrew her divine sense and opened her eyes. Her phone lit up, and a message jumped out: “I really do like her.”
When Bai Moqing returned home, the little orange cat welcomed her enthusiastically. “Meow, meow, meow! Bai Moqing, you’re finally back. Why are you so late today?”
The little orange cat raised her head and sniffed. Discovering the hot pot smell on Bai Moqing, her ears stood up. “You went to eat hot pot!” Grabbing Bai Moqing’s pants leg, she climbed onto her shoulder and moved closer to smell Bai Moqing’s mouth.
The pink, wet tip of her nose touched the corner of Bai Moqing’s lips. She really was becoming more and more reckless.
Bai Moqing pushed the little orange cat’s head. “Get down.”
The little paws gripped Bai Moqing’s clothes. The little orange cat refused. “I won’t.” She tilted her head and rubbed Bai Moqing’s cheek. “I found a mountain spring with rich spiritual energy. Do you want to go cultivate with me?”
The fur rubbing her cheek made it itch. Bai Moqing walked to the coffee table and put down the bag. She raised her hand, grabbed the little orange cat by the back of the neck, set her on the coffee table, and said, “I am not cultivating immortality anymore. Go by yourself.”
She opened the bag and took out the cans. “These are from my coworker for you. Tuna cans.”
“You mentioned me to your coworker?” The little orange cat looked happy and jumped to the floor, changing into human form.
Bai Moqing glanced once and quickly moved her gaze away. “Why are you not wearing clothes again?”
Feiyue looked down, then laughed. Shyly tugging at the corner of Bai Moqing’s clothes, she said, “Bai Moqing, look at me. Has my figure changed?”
“Not looking.” After taking out all the cat cans, Bai Moqing returned to her bedroom with one divine thought, leaving Feiyue standing naked in the living room.
She had just steadied herself when knock, knock, knock. A knock came from outside the door, along with Feiyue’s very polite voice. “Lady Bai, may I come in?”
Lady Bai? Bai Moqing rubbed her forehead. During the day she had been gone, what nonsense had Feiyue watched? Through the door, she refused. “No.”
Knock, knock, knock. “Miss Bai, I have put on clothes. Can you chat with me?”
“I don’t want to chat.”
Knock, knock, knock. “Little beauty…”
Bang. The door opened. Bai Moqing looked coldly at Feiyue. “Aren’t cats supposed to be quiet animals? Why do you talk so much?”
Feiyue twisted the corner of her clothes, looking shy. “I am a girl now.”
Bai Moqing: “…”
“Look. Hasn’t my figure become very good now?”
Feiyue pushed out her chest. Bai Moqing swept one glance over her and was about to mock her when her phone suddenly rang. Her heart clenched. President Xiao.
Feiyue looked at Bai Moqing’s pocket. Seeing Bai Moqing stunned, she reminded her, “Bai Moqing, your phone is ringing.”
Bai Moqing glanced at Feiyue, turned her back, and took out the phone. Seeing the name, a trace of disappointment flashed through her. So it was not President Xiao.
Feiyue leaned over and peeked. “Dr. Xue.” Holding onto the door with both hands, she asked with concern, “Bai Moqing, are you sick?”
“No.” Bai Moqing answered the call and closed the door with a bang. Feiyue quickly pulled her paws back. If she had not been quick-eyed and quick-handed, the door would almost have pinched them.
Thinking of Dr. Xue, Feiyue’s curiosity scratched at her like cat claws. She pressed her ear to the door and listened secretly.
“Dr. Xue.” Bai Moqing walked to the bay window and sat down. Xue Shichu’s gentle voice reached her ear. “Moqing, tomorrow is the weekend. Come to the hospital for a checkup.”
“My body is very good. No need.” Just as during the day, Bai Moqing refused.
Xue Shichu laughed. “Since your body is very good, then tomorrow let’s go shopping…” Knock, knock. A knock sounded at the door.
Tonight, it was Xue Shichu’s turn to be on duty. She looked up at the sound and clearly saw the person standing at the door. To Bai Moqing, she said, “Sorry. Something suddenly came up. I’ll talk to you later.” Then she hung up.
“Xiao Xing, why are you here?” Xue Shichu put down her phone, smiled, and stood, walking toward her.
Xiao Xing glanced at the phone on Xue Shichu’s desk and asked, “Were you on the phone with Bai Moqing just now?” Her temperatureless gaze chilled people to the bone.
Hearing that there was no sound inside the room, Feiyue quickly knocked. “Bai Moqing, can you chat with me now?”
What a clingy little demon. Bai Moqing opened the door. “What exactly do you want?”
She had finally come out. Feiyue quickly grabbed her hand and acted spoiled. “Bai Moqing, I want to cultivate with you.”
“No dual cultivation.” Bai Moqing pulled Feiyue’s hand away. Feiyue blinked her bright, innocent eyes. “Not dual cultivation. Just cultivating together.” Her two paws firmly held Bai Moqing’s sleeve.
“Then meditate outside and cultivate.” Bai Moqing forcefully pulled back her hand.
Feiyue blinked, then changed her request. “Then can you take me out to walk around on the street? I have never walked among people in human form.”
“No…”
“You’ve rejected me so many times. You won’t even agree to such a tiny request?” She looked pitiful.
“Fine.” Bai Moqing sighed. “I’ll take you out tomorrow.”
“At night!” Feiyue grabbed Bai Moqing’s hand and pulled her outward. “If I walk outside in human form during the day, I’ll be scared.”
“Demons get scared too?” Bai Moqing looked at Feiyue in disbelief. “Tell the truth. You keep asking me to go out. Are you plotting something?”
