Ding. The elevator arrived. Xiao Xing put away her smile and returned to being the cold, detached, expressionless, abstinent president. Her long legs stepped into the elevator. She turned and looked at Bai Moqing.
Bai Moqing entered the elevator and stood face to face with Xiao Xing. She wanted to turn around and face away, but felt that would be rude. If she did not turn, it felt awkward.
She lowered her eyes slightly. Awkward it was, then. They would arrive soon anyway.
Suddenly, Xiao Xing’s voice sounded above her head. “Bai Moqing.”
Bai Moqing’s heart skipped. This was the first time Xiao Xing had called her name. The voice was cool as water, flowing into her heart and making it itch, as if thousands of tiny ants were crawling there.
She raised her head and met Xiao Xing’s clear, bright eyes. Bai Moqing felt as if the whole world had become Xiao Xing. “Pre… President Xiao.”
A sealed elevator car was a very ambiguous place.
Xiao Xing took one step closer to Bai Moqing and raised her hand. Bai Moqing grew so nervous that she held her breath. But Xiao Xing moved her gaze away from Bai Moqing’s face, turned to the buttons, and said, “Next time you come in, remember to press the floor first.”
After lighting up the button, Xiao Xing stepped back two steps and put distance between them.
“Yes, President Xiao.” The presence of a superior made Bai Moqing, who had thought too much, feel embarrassed. She retreated one step toward the corner of the elevator and tilted her head slightly. Xiao Xing looked straight ahead without glancing aside.
Suddenly, a thought rose in Bai Moqing’s heart. President Xiao’s every move was deliberate.
Thinking back on President Xiao’s behavior these past two days, every bit of it seemed meant to tease her.
But then again, she and Xiao Xing had only known each other for a few days. Even counting the time they met at the cafe, it had not been more than half a month. Even if it were love at first sight, Xiao Xing would not fall for someone with conditions like hers.
Leaving aside her hidden identity as a cultivator, she had nothing worthy of Xiao Xing’s liking. Her looks were only a little prettier than ordinary. Compared to Xiao Xing, she did not have even thirty percent of her beauty.
Why would President Xiao act like this? Could it be that she was overthinking again?
Before she could think of an answer, the elevator had already reached the top floor.
The top floor of the building belonged exclusively to Xiao Xing. Other than her assistant, no one else was there.
After they left the elevator, the long corridor was frighteningly quiet.
Xiao Xing brought Bai Moqing to her president’s office. Not counting the times Bai Moqing had secretly spied with divine sense, this was her second time coming here.
The office was large. A three-meter-long desk was set at an angle on the east side. In the center was a set of Italian modern light-luxury leather sofas, laid over a beige cashmere rug. The wall behind the desk was entirely covered by bookcases.
Xiao Xing pointed to the bookcases. “Help me organize the files in there.”
Bai Moqing felt she was being made things difficult for. She looked at Xiao Xing blankly. “President Xiao, how do you want me to organize them?”
“Organize them however you see fit.” Xiao Xing still gave no clear requirement. She turned, walked to the sofa, and sat down. Taking her phone from her pocket, she looked like she was very busy and should not be disturbed. She did not look at Bai Moqing again.
Bai Moqing stood in place, looked at Xiao Xing, then looked at the bookcases. Gritting her teeth, she walked to the bookcases and opened every door.
She planned to first look at the general situation. Organizing files was nothing more than sorting by category. Once she knew what was in the bookcases and divided everything properly, she would quickly finish.
The bookcases were large, but there were not many things inside. At this moment, Bai Moqing could be sure that President Xiao had not asked her here simply to organize bookcases.
She looked back at Xiao Xing. There were two possibilities. One, Xiao Xing was testing her patience and temper. Two, Xiao Xing was deliberately making things difficult for her.
No matter which possibility it was, in the end, it was related to President Xiao wanting her to become a secretary.
After Bai Moqing looked over everything in the cabinets, she closed her eyes and sorted them into categories in her mind. This was one advantage cultivators had. They were widely learned, had strong memory, and never forgot what they had seen.
When she opened her eyes again, she quickly began organizing.
Xiao Xing raised her head and watched Bai Moqing move back and forth before the bookcases. Without realizing it, she became lost in the sight.
Those hands holding books had once held a sword and formed seals while cultivating on the peak of a snowy mountain. Her swordwork had flowed like clouds and water, and her body had given off a faint glow.
In the whistling wind and snow, she had sat cross-legged in the snow, steady as a boulder. Falling snowflakes landed on her protective light shield and vanished instantly.
The spiritual energy between heaven and earth had slowly entered her body, washing and tempering her soul…
Xiao Xing stood and slowly walked toward Bai Moqing.
Hearing the footsteps behind her come closer and closer, Bai Moqing’s heart grew flustered again. She had no fear when facing ghosts, monsters, or demons. Yet before Xiao Xing, she was like a young girl who had not yet understood love. Xiao Xing’s every frown, smile, word, and sentence could make her lose her composure.
Suddenly, the footsteps stopped.
Xiao Xing returned to herself and stopped behind Bai Moqing, quietly watching her. Seeing that Bai Moqing was almost done, Xiao Xing turned, walked to the sofa chair, pulled it out, sat down, and casually picked up a file to read.
“President Xiao, everything is organized.” Bai Moqing walked to Xiao Xing’s side. She glanced at the file in Xiao Xing’s hand, then her gaze was drawn to Xiao Xing’s hand.
Fair and slender, soft as white jade, with nails trimmed smooth and rounded. Bai Moqing glanced at her own dust-stained hands and quickly tucked away her dirty claws. “If there is nothing else, I’ll go back.”
Xiao Xing raised her head and looked at Bai Moqing, then swept her gaze over her hands. Her handsome face and her thin, long, clearly jointed fingers had all been dirtied. Xiao Xing stood and said, “Come with me.”
Thinking Xiao Xing had more work for her, Bai Moqing did not ask anything and followed her out from behind the desk.
On the west side stood a redwood floor screen. The carving was exquisite and delicate, with mountains, rivers, birds, and beasts all vivid and lifelike. Behind the screen was a black, finely carved security door, blending into the black-patterned wall.
Xiao Xing raised her hand and entered her fingerprint. With a beep, the door clicked open.
There was actually a bedroom here!
Bai Moqing was so surprised she could not speak. Xiao Xing had already walked in. Seeing Bai Moqing standing blankly at the door, Xiao Xing pointed to the bathroom. “You can shower there.”
Shower? What an ambiguous, imagination-stirring sentence. Bai Moqing shook her head and refused. “No need. I’ll just wash my hands in the outside restroom.”
Xiao Xing looked at her, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
Bai Moqing compromised. Her heart like a startled deer, she walked uneasily into the room. Xiao Xing turned sideways and watched Bai Moqing enter the bathroom, then turned and walked out.
Hearing the departing footsteps, Bai Moqing placed both hands on the sink and let out a long breath. She raised her head. In the mirror, the unusual blush on her cheeks had not yet faded.
She quickly turned on the water and washed her face with cold water.
Stop letting your thoughts run wild!
Thinking of Bai Moqing’s blushing face, Xiao Xing smiled. She was as cute as a little immortal deer that had wandered into the human world by mistake.
Xiao Xing looked back toward the sound of running water, then walked to the sofa and sat down, waiting for Bai Moqing to come out.
Before Bai Moqing came out, a knock sounded at the door.
From the sound alone, Xiao Xing knew who was knocking. An Huaigu.
“Come in.” As her words fell, the door opened, and An Huaigu walked in.
Twisting her charming waist, An Huaigu walked up to Xiao Xing and carefully looked her up and down. “Did you sleep well last night? Are you still tired?”
Bai Moqing, who had washed her hands and reached the bedroom doorway, froze in place.
Sleep well? Tired?
Her heart gave a dull ache. President Xiao and Sister An last night… had spent a night of pleasure?
No wonder Sister An had come so late today.
Bai Moqing did not know whether she should walk out now. If she walked out, Sister An might misunderstand. If she did not walk out, she felt like a third party.
“I slept very well.” Xiao Xing’s cold, temperatureless voice sounded in the office. “I need to go out soon. If there is anything, wait until I come back.”
Bai Moqing let out a breath of relief. She knew President Xiao’s words were only an excuse to send An Huaigu away.
“Mm, that’s fine too.” An Huaigu nodded and was about to leave when she remembered something. She turned back and asked, “Ah Xing, how many secretaries are you planning to hire?”
The word secretary poked Bai Moqing’s weak spot and made her feel uneasy.
“One.” Xiao Xing used the motion of standing to glance toward the bedroom. “I am planning to transfer Bai Moqing over as my secretary. Do you have any thoughts?”
“Bai Moqing?” An Huaigu put away her smile. “She can’t.”
Bai Moqing froze slightly. Was Sister An afraid she would steal President Xiao away?
Then she heard An Huaigu say, “I like her,” and her whole mind went blank.
A joke. It had to be a joke.
Returning to herself, Bai Moqing firmly decided not to walk out. Unexpectedly, at that moment, her phone rang abruptly.
