When Li Lingjiang woke, it was already deep night. Yin Wu held her entire body in her arms. As soon as Li Lingjiang moved, the young immortal woke too and instinctively checked the temperature of her forehead. Her voice was low and hoarse with sleep. “My Lord is awake. Are you uncomfortable?”
“No. Much better.” Li Lingjiang was still a little tired. She felt for her clothes and found they had been changed. The material of her inner garment was different. “When did we sleep?”
Yin Wu pressed her face against Li Lingjiang’s. “I do not remember. It should not have been long. I only relaxed after your fever went down.”
Li Lingjiang closed her eyes. “I do not know when I fell asleep. I have no memory of it.”
“Blame me. I did not take proper care of you. I kept saying I was afraid you would catch cold, but I still could not hold back.” Yin Wu opened her eyes and tucked a loose strand of hair behind Li Lingjiang’s ear. “It still feels unreal.”
Li Lingjiang’s voice had a slight nasal sound. “Does it?”
“It feels like yesterday you were still my benefactor, and today you have become someone so close to me.” Yin Wu tightened her arms again. “My partner.”
Li Lingjiang answered softly. Suddenly, she shrank back. “Do not kiss me.”
Yin Wu blinked. “Hm?”
“I am sick. It would be bad if I passed it to you.” Li Lingjiang half opened her eyes. She seemed extremely sleepy. “Is this not how feelings are? Ever since I learned my own heart toward you, I could no longer return to how I was before.”
Her fingertip touched Yin Wu’s chest, not with much force. “This changed too.”
Yin Wu held her hand and played with it. Li Lingjiang did not know when she fell asleep, nor when Yin Wu finally closed her eyes. She only vaguely remembered her back being patted softly, and the young immortal seemed to kiss her cheek.
The voice by her ear was not very clear. “Sweet dreams, My Lord.”
A faint light showed in the sky. Li Lingjiang propped herself up and picked up a lock of hair. She found signs of it turning black. The warmth beside her had already cooled. A matched set of clothes had been placed at her side. It was dark blue. She only had a faint impression of it and did not know where the young immortal had dug it out from.
Yin Wu had cleaned the wooden house spotless. There was also a small kitchen beside it. No-Return Mountain had not had such cooking smoke in so many years. Li Lingjiang held the doorframe and stared blankly toward it. In the past, the young immortal had only warmed porridge. Most of the time, she did not even light a fire.
Yin Wu happened to walk out. She shook the water from her hands. Seeing Li Lingjiang awake, she froze, then jogged over. “My Lord woke so early. Why not sleep a little longer?”
She pressed her forehead to Li Lingjiang’s. Only after confirming the fever had gone down did she breathe in relief. “Good. The fever is gone. My Lord, you do not know how much you sweated last night. I changed your clothes several times.”
Li Lingjiang took out a handkerchief and wiped the water from Yin Wu’s hands. “You worked hard. What are you cooking?”
Yin Wu held her hand in return and pulled her toward the kitchen. “Nothing much. I made some millet porridge and a little pickled vegetable. It has been a long time since I cooked.”
She turned back mysteriously. “My Lord, I pickled this for a very long time. I secretly prepared it in the Immortal Realm. I still have quite a lot in my storage bag. When your sense of taste recovers, I will make different things for you every day.”
Yin Wu smiled. “Do they not say that to catch a person’s heart, you must first catch her stomach?”
Li Lingjiang laughed. She suddenly asked, “What exactly is your position in the Immortal Realm that you can store so many things?”
“I follow the medicine immortal. Usually I do other work too.” Yin Wu answered smoothly. She suddenly turned around and did not miss the trace of doubt in Li Lingjiang’s eyes. The next instant, she hooked Li Lingjiang close and kissed her forcefully.
Li Lingjiang was forced to step back. She leaned against the wooden house, her hand clasped with Yin Wu’s and lifted level with her head. She liked kissing very much and had always responded to the young immortal in small ways. She rarely showed embarrassment. Even after Yin Wu had tormented her so much before, she had quickly accepted it and cooperated.
She freed one hand and wrapped it around Yin Wu’s neck, fingers gripping the cloth on Yin Wu’s back. When their lips parted, a clear thread of moisture still connected them.
Yin Wu wiped Li Lingjiang’s lips with her fingertip, pressing and rubbing against the color that had been kissed into them. Her eyes gradually darkened as she met Li Lingjiang’s gaze.
Li Lingjiang’s eyes were very calm. There was no sign of an approaching storm, only a steady peace like gentle rain. It easily stirred a person’s desire to destroy, to bully her, to see another side of her.
“Yin…” Li Lingjiang’s lips and teeth were parted by a fingernail. Her head was only slightly tilted back, eyes half narrowed, her tongue following Yin Wu’s movement. As if hurt, she frowned and lightly licked. Her throat moved as she swallowed.
Yin Wu slowly pulled back her hand and wiped her wet fingers clean with a handkerchief. Then she lowered her head and kissed Li Lingjiang again, her hand rubbing at the other woman’s waist, pressing her firmly against the wooden boards.
Li Lingjiang was a little short of breath from the kiss. She lightly hit Yin Wu’s shoulder with a fist. When they separated, her breathing was clearly much more disordered. She said softly, “Yin Wu, do not kiss me.”
“Why?” Yin Wu touched foreheads with her. “Do you not like it?”
Li Lingjiang shook her head. “My body has not fully recovered. I caught cold. I am afraid I will pass it to you.”
Yin Wu laughed aloud and gave a hum. “I am not afraid. I like kissing you very much.”
“It is not too late after I recover. These two days you have been biting and gnawing. It is a little swollen.” Li Lingjiang touched her lips and tilted her head slightly. Yin Wu had trapped her in a narrow space. “It hurts a little.”
Yin Wu felt Li Lingjiang had found her weak point and was deliberately picking at it. She buried her face in Li Lingjiang’s neck and played with her fingers. Her voice came out muffled. “All right. Next time I will pay attention.”
Li Lingjiang was tickled by Yin Wu rubbing against her. She turned her head aside, eyes half narrowed. She had indeed suspected the young immortal just now, but after that exchange, she lost the wish to probe. Good or bad, she only hoped Yin Wu would not betray her.
She stroked Yin Wu’s hair. “Did you not say you would cook for me? I am hungry.”
Yin Wu straightened and slapped her own head, looking annoyed. “I almost forgot. This brain of mine.”
She took Li Lingjiang’s hand and spoke as they walked. “When there is a chance later, I must bring you to see where I live. I made it very pretty.”
Li Lingjiang answered, “There will be a chance.”
Steam spread through the kitchen air, soon moistening the eyes. In the blink of an eye, the heat in the room could be felt. From the remaining fire came the occasional crack of burning wood. Li Lingjiang had no idea where Yin Wu had gotten all of this.
She looked around. All kinds of seasonings had been placed neatly. On the cutting board were chopped scallions, ginger, and garlic. Porridge warmed in the iron pot. After Yin Wu lifted the lid, she pinched her earlobe to cool her burned fingers, then gave Li Lingjiang an embarrassed smile and took out the prepared bowls and chopsticks to serve two bowls.
“My Lord, food is ready.”
She kept talking. “The pickled vegetable does not have a strong taste. I did not dare use chili either. I do not know if you can taste anything now.”
Yin Wu handed over chopsticks. “Here, My Lord.”
Li Lingjiang froze. She took them and sat on the prepared chair. Holding the bowl and chopsticks, she blinked and carefully blew on the porridge. The satisfaction of hot food entering her stomach came in an instant. It was completely different from before. She did not know whether the two of them had changed, or whether the taste had changed.
But she still could not taste anything.
She only knew No-Return Mountain had not had such human warmth in many years. Since her father died, she had never felt it again.
Yin Wu, Yin Wu, how am I supposed to control myself?
Li Lingjiang took a deep breath and followed Yin Wu’s instructions. The pickled vegetables had no taste when she chewed them, like wax. In truth, it was hard to eat. When the young immortal asked how it was, Li Lingjiang answered honestly.
“I knew it. But it is fine.” Yin Wu sat down with a peaceful mood. She held the bowl in one hand and swallowed in large mouthfuls, still speaking with food in her mouth. “I will slowly nurse you back.”
Hearing this, Li Lingjiang pressed her lips together and smiled. She nodded and drank another mouthful of porridge.
This morning had no wind or rain. Even the mist was fading, just like her.
For the next few days, Yin Wu kept taking care of the courtyard. From time to time, she brought back odd things. Li Lingjiang frowned each time she saw them. She did not know where Yin Wu had found a large tree. The two dragons were so tired carrying it back that they lay flat on the table. Li Lingjiang watched the young immortal bustle around and truly could not bear to mention anything else, so she could only let her do as she pleased.
Fortunately, after a few days, Yin Wu finally stopped once she was satisfied. But she still could not stay idle and began fiddling with painting.
Li Lingjiang usually sat in the courtyard and read the books Ling Xin and Yin Wu had brought back. Seeing Yin Wu so focused, curiosity rose in her heart. She kept holding back and did not disturb her. Only after half an hour did the young immortal let out a long breath. Her eyes shone as she waved Li Lingjiang over to look.
Li Lingjiang put down the book and walked over. After looking for a while, her expression slowly became serious.
My Lord did not want to look.
My Lord did not know.
Yin Wu’s painting skill truly surpassed Li Lingjiang’s imagination. Li Lingjiang looked as if she were solving a difficult riddle. She studied it for a long time and still could not see any meaning. When she met Yin Wu’s expectant gaze, she hesitated in a stiff silence for quite a while.
In the end, Yin Wu leaned forward and asked, “My Lord… what do you think?”
It was not hard to hear the tremble at the end of the young immortal’s words.
But Li Lingjiang did not know how to answer. She looked troubled. Finally, she shook her head. “I do not know what you painted.”
Yin Wu was shocked. She pointed at the painting and told Li Lingjiang that it was her, Little Black, and Little White, successfully receiving My Lord’s confused gaze. The young immortal’s pride was struck at once. Her eyes went red, and she silently sat on the steps, shutting herself away.
Li Lingjiang walked over with a smile. She tugged Yin Wu’s collar. “Are you sad?”
“No.” Yin Wu’s voice was low. “I have no talent for this.”
Li Lingjiang gave a long hum and coaxed her. “Perhaps I do not have the ability to appreciate it.”
Yin Wu said, “…That makes me sadder.”
“All right, get up. The ground is cold.” Li Lingjiang crouched down and rubbed Yin Wu’s earlobe, speaking with a smile in her voice.
Yin Wu revealed her eyes. Tear tracks were very easy to see. She looked at Li Lingjiang with such grievance that she could not have looked more pitiful.
Li Lingjiang wiped away her tears with the side of her finger. In the next instant, her lips were blocked. She gave a low sound. Yin Wu held her beneath the hips and lifted her. Li Lingjiang obediently embraced her and kissed her back.
“My Lord.” Yin Wu’s voice was a little hoarse. She strode toward the old tree. The blooming flowers were tempting. She kissed Li Lingjiang’s neck. “Coax me. Let me have you here once… all right?”
Li Lingjiang lowered her eyes to look at her and said nothing.
As the movement continued, petals kept falling, landing on pale skin before being taken away by lips in turn.
