Luo Yi’s expression faltered for a moment.
“Senior Sister.” Yun Shayi sounded a little hurt, her voice somewhat hoarse. Seeing Luo Yi ignore her, she called out again a few times, her voice full of sorrow.
Luo Yi couldn’t bear that sound. Her face stiffened for an instant, but her heart softened. She tried to soften her expression. “Can you let me go out?”
Yun Shayi’s hurt expression vanished in an instant, like a magic trick. Her look turned cold. “No.”
“It’s best if Senior Sister stays here. Don’t go anywhere.”
Luo Yi glanced around. “How long do you plan to keep me here?”
Yun Shayi looked upset. She bit her lip. “Until you no longer want to leave.”
With that, she left, looking a bit flustered, not forgetting to close the door. Luo Tangtang watched the scene, her own expression complicated. She felt that the current Yun Shayi’s personality was somewhat similar to the First Senior Sister of the past, yet there were still distinct differences.
Thinking of First Senior Sister, Luo Tangtang’s expression darkened. How long had she been here? What would First Senior Sister do, holding her unconscious body?
Her thoughts hadn’t drifted far when another rustling sound was heard. Luo Yi was tied up again.
“…”
To be honest, although Yun Shayi had tied Luo Yi up, she seemed afraid of making her uncomfortable. She had used vines to bind Luo Yi’s hands, feet, and waist, not wrapping her layer upon layer like a rice dumpling.
However, Luo Yi’s eyes lowered, looking at the thin vine wrapped around her neck. Her expression darkened almost imperceptibly.
Is she treating me like a pet cat or dog, leashing me up?
The “cage,” if one could even call it that, had been enlarged by Yun Shayi many times over. Food was spread out beside an elegant couch. And, for some reason Yun Shayi thought best, there was a white jade flower bed in the southeast corner of the cage.
Is this for me to plant flowers when I have nothing else to do?
Luo Yi’s face darkened even more.
She didn’t know why, but her emotions always became unstable around Yun Shayi. The more she thought about it, the more her head ached. Luo Yi leaned back on the couch, gently rubbing her temples.
“Come out. Let’s talk,” Luo Yi finally said, having held back for a while.
“I know you’re here.”
Perhaps because Luo Yi’s tone was laced with impatience, Yun Shayi reluctantly materialized in mid-air.
“You can’t keep me locked up forever, can you?” Luo Yi tried to make her gaze look as sincere as possible.
“I can,” Yun Shayi whispered, perfectly serious.
Luo Yi rubbed her temples again.
“I’m not happy when you’re like this.”
For a moment, Yun Shayi’s composure seemed to shatter. Her fingers quietly clenched. She lowered her head, saying nothing.
Luo Yi felt a sudden tightness in her chest, words catching in her throat. She calmed herself and said, somewhat compromisingly, “I can promise you, I won’t leave for now.”
Yun Shayi’s expression dimmed. “For now?” she asked.
Luo Yi fell silent too. “I have to leave eventually.”
The two parted on unhappy terms once more.
Luo Yi felt troubled, but there was nothing she could do. She couldn’t make any promises, so she couldn’t casually give Yun Shayi hope. Even this time felt stolen. Luo Yi didn’t dare to imagine what would happen if the Main God found out she had acted on her own and returned to see Yun Shayi. Worry gradually crept into her eyes.
Luo Yi remained confined by Yun Shayi like this for an unknown length of time, until Yun Shayi finally removed the cage.
Luo Yi shot Yun Shayi a cold glance, then her gaze slowly drifted downwards, resting on some unknown spot. Yun Shayi reached out to take her hand, but her own hand froze in mid-air.
“Senior Sister.” Yun Shayi’s voice was suddenly hoarse. She stared with wide, somewhat stunned eyes, gazing fixedly at Luo Yi. An indescribable bitterness welled up inside her, filling her heart and eyes with sorrow.
Luo Yi frowned. Yun Shayi’s stare made her scalp prickle; it was so full of grievance and sorrow, as if Luo Yi had committed some unforgivable crime, as if Yun Shayi were the one who had been locked up for three months, not the other way around.
“I want to go out for a walk,” Luo Yi finally said.
Yun Shayi’s eyes dimmed. She nodded silently and followed behind Luo Yi at a moderate distance, as if this was the greatest concession she could make, knowing Luo Yi didn’t want her company.
Actually, Luo Yi didn’t feel particularly strongly about it. She simply felt the sunlight inside wasn’t good and wanted to take a walk. But Yun Shayi always made it impossible to have a proper conversation, which left Luo Yi feeling somewhat exasperated.
This appeared to be an uninhabited valley. The scenery was tranquil, with birds flitting past—Rainbow Birds, their colors vivid.
Luo Tangtang had also followed them outside. Her pupils dilated, and her lips trembled slightly—Fusang Valley.
She looked up and saw tall, expansive trees whose canopies obscured large swathes of the sky. Flocks of Rainbow Birds circled above, like a magnificent, cloud-like brocade.
Luo Yi saw them too, and her gaze softened a little.
Rainbow Birds were very fast; it was one of their ways to survive. Thus, adult birds often flew with the young ones to train their speed.
Luo Yi’s gaze landed on a little Rainbow Bird at the very back of the flock. It looked tiny, a fledgling, but even smaller than usual. After a few circles, it seemed to run out of energy and started to fall behind, gradually lagging further.
But the other Rainbow Birds seemed to have no intention of waiting for it. This world was inherently cruel—the strong preyed on the weak. If they waited for it now, then when faced with danger, no one would wait to save it.
The little Rainbow Bird finally let out a mournful cry, its wings trembled, and it began to fall from the sky. Luo Yi’s figure flashed; she reached out her hand, and the tiny bird landed precisely in her palm. It was no bigger than her palm. Finding itself in an unfamiliar place, it seemed a little frightened and shivered its wings.
This Rainbow Bird had a fiery red streak down the center of its back; it was of the fire element. Luo Yi didn’t dare to casually use her spiritual energy to heal it, afraid the bird wouldn’t be able to adjust properly and it would cause its own spiritual energy to become chaotic.
She reached out a fingertip and gently stroked its crest, a slight smile playing on her lips.
“Senior Sister.” Yun Shayi came forward, her steps a little flustered. She silently looked at the Rainbow Bird in Luo Yi’s hand, her tone unreadable. “This bird… who knows what it eats. It’s probably not very clean.”
Luo Yi looked at her.
Yun Shayi said calmly, completely unruffled, “Its speed is terrible. I wouldn’t expect it to catch much of anything.”
The plump little Rainbow Bird stiffened. Its tiny claws lost their grip, and it stumbled. It was a Rainbow Bird, a descendant of Phoenixes! How could it possibly eat those kinds of things?
It normally only drank mountain spring water and ate wild fruits, okay? It certainly didn’t eat caterpillars!
“Chirp chirp!” The Rainbow Bird cried out indignantly.
Yun Shayi shot it a cool glance, and it immediately fell silent.
Luo Tangtang watched all this, feeling rather awkward.
Luo Yi sat down under a tree, placed the little Rainbow Bird on her lap, and took out some preserved spiritual mushroom fruit to feed it.
The little Rainbow Bird was uneasy at first, but after sniffing and finding it wasn’t poisonous, it ate quite happily.
Yun Shayi stood to the side, her eyes lowered, not saying a word, looking rather dejected.
Luo Yi looked at her. “Come here.” She beckoned to Yun Shayi.
Yun Shayi’s eyes instantly brightened, then just as suddenly dimmed. Head bowed, she slowly walked over and stood before Luo Yi, as if expecting a scolding.
“Sit.” Luo Yi patted the spot beside her.
Yun Shayi hesitated for a moment, then sat down beside her.
This… Luo Tangtang watched, somehow feeling that Yun Shayi was really pushing her luck.
【That’s right, she is.】 The System also spoke.
【Can you hear my thoughts?】 Luo Tangtang’s demeanor turned icy. She narrowed her eyes, her voice dangerously low.
【No, but your expression is very easy to read.】
Really? Luo Tangtang touched her face, wondering silently.
Luo Tangtang wasn’t the only one who felt that way. Luo Yi looked at Yun Shayi’s silent profile. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Yun Shayi shook her head.
Luo Yi seemed to sigh. After a moment, she said softly, “I promise you, I’ll stay within the valley. I won’t try to leave secretly.”
Yun Shayi’s eyes brightened for a moment, but a bitter smile touched her lips. “I know Senior Sister is just saying that to make me happy. But hearing you say it already makes me very happy.”
“After all, Senior Sister has always done as she pleases, and it’s always for my own good. I’m just too ignorant and disobedient. If Senior Sister tells me things, it only makes matters worse.”
“Senior Sister is an immortal. In your eyes, Yun Shayi is merely a fleeting, humble existence. How could I possibly be worthy of knowing your plans to stay or leave?”
Look at that, she even used honorifics.
In the past, seeing Yun Shayi with such an expression would have made Luo Tangtang’s heart ache unbearably. But now, her mouth just fell open as she watched Yun Shayi deliver that long speech with a completely straight face. She was truly astonished.
Luo Yi’s eyelid twitched. Looking at Yun Shayi, who sat perfectly upright with her head bowed, she suddenly felt at a loss for words.
“Who taught you to say things like that?” Luo Yi finally managed to ask.
Yun Shayi, however, maintained a composed expression, though a few tears “composedly” welled up. They didn’t stream down her face, but clung to her thick lashes, trembling slightly, looking incredibly stubborn.
Even the little Rainbow Bird on Luo Yi’s lap widened its eyes.
Luo Yi pressed her lips together. Although she knew Yun Shayi was largely just acting pitiful, she… her heart softened.
She sometimes wondered where this soft-heartedness came from. An image suddenly flashed through her mind: a young girl, almost grown, holding a newborn baby, a smile on her lips, her eyes gentle. A splitting headache, like a sharp blade, shattered the image that had just formed, and Luo Yi’s face abruptly paled.
Luo Tangtang’s face turned pale as well; she had also seen that image.
“Senior Sister!” Seeing cold sweat suddenly appear on Luo Yi’s forehead and her lips turn pale, Yun Shayi’s previously blank face instantly filled with alarm. She grabbed Luo Yi’s wrist, her movement so abrupt that it knocked the little Rainbow Bird off Luo Yi’s lap. It tumbled to the ground, letting out pitiful chirps.
“I’m fine.” Luo Yi’s lips moved. In her daze, Yun Shayi’s face seemed to merge with the baby’s from the vision.
Yun Shayi, however, started to tremble, fear in her eyes, and she clung to Luo Yi, refusing to let go.
Her grip was very strong. Luo Yi felt a throbbing pain in her wrist but didn’t pull away. Instead, she leaned gently into Yun Shayi’s embrace and soothed softly, “Don’t be afraid. I’m here.”
