The golden sunlight became transparent.
Sikou Yan reached out and plucked the guqin strings. The strings trembled with clear ringing sounds. The scenery around them swept past like a speeding train. In the blink of an eye, it turned into a flat, open grassland.
Xiao Xing looked around. In the distance were rolling mountains and rivers. Not far to the side was a boundless forest. Towering trees rose into the clouds, their branches and leaves thick enough to block out the sun.
Behind them, the clear sound of flowing water reached their ears.
The sofa and furniture had all disappeared. But Sikou Yan’s guqin was still there. Only the coffee table beneath it had turned into a brown guqin table.
Sikou Yan’s fingers rested on the strings.
Bai Moqing studied Sikou Yan’s hands and the guqin beneath them. After a moment, as if seeing the trick, she lifted her head and asked Sikou Yan, “Is this an illusion created by the guqin?”
Although it was a question, she was already seventy to eighty percent certain.
“Mm.”
Sikou Yan did not deny it.
After she answered, a cyan cauldron suddenly appeared before her.
Bai Moqing had summoned the God-Slaying Cauldron.
The person and cauldron had already become one. Bai Moqing could control the God-Slaying Cauldron however she wished. The God-Slaying Cauldron bloomed with dazzling cyan light and released a frightening aura as it spun in the air, ready at any moment to take Sikou Yan’s life.
The wariness in Bai Moqing’s eyes made Sikou Yan sad.
Sikou Yan smiled bitterly. She turned and sat cross-legged before the guqin table. Both hands pressed down on the strings as she turned her head to look at Bai Moqing.
“Do you distrust me that much?”
The sadness in her eyes was real.
After a little hesitation, Bai Moqing answered, “What you have done makes it impossible for people to trust you.”
It was an answer Sikou Yan had expected.
Sikou Yan smiled and shook her head. “When will your memories fully recover?”
It sounded like she was asking Bai Moqing, and also like she was sighing.
With a wave of her hand, she put away the guqin and made an old yellow parchment scroll appear on the guqin table. Then she slowly unfolded it.
“This is an ancient scroll left from the ancient era of this realm. It shows the great barrier array set in the Snow Region.”
The Snow Region mountain range stretched for a thousand miles. The first mountain was called Kong Sang Mountain. No grass or trees grew there, and snow fell there through all four seasons. The first array was there.
Many people in the world longed to climb high peaks. This Kong Sang Mountain, covered in white snow all year round, was naturally also a target for many climbers. However, to this day, no mortal had ever reached the top of Kong Sang Mountain. Only immortal cultivators could pass through the barrier array and climb it.
After Kong Sang Mountain lay the entire Snow Region mountain range, which mortals could not see.
At the center of the range, there was a mountain so tall it seemed to touch the sky. Immortal cultivators called it the peak of the Snow Region.
To fly by sword or ride the wind to the peak of the Snow Region, one had to pass through fierce astral wind. Immortal cultivators or demon cultivators with low cultivation could lose their lives to the astral wind with one careless moment.
Xiao Xing swept her eyes over the arrays drawn across the Snow Region on the map and asked in confusion, “Why are we looking at this?”
For them, going to the peak of the Snow Region was a very simple matter. Those arrays were no different from empty decoration.
Sikou Yan glanced at Xiao Xing. Pointing to one array on the drawing, she said, “This is the Dragon-Gathering Array. It secretly matches the twenty-eight constellations in the sky. The spiritual energy gathered inside it is purer than elsewhere.”
Her finger moved two inches to the side and pointed at the peak of the Snow Region in the very center.
She lifted her head and said to Xiao Xing and Bai Moqing, “If we guide the spiritual energy from the Dragon-Gathering Array into a divine artifact, perhaps we can open a passage between this realm and the Eleventh Heaven.”
After hearing this, Xiao Xing’s face turned a little pale.
“What do you mean?”
It was a question whose answer she already knew.
Sikou Yan smiled and asked Xiao Xing in return, “Do I still need to say it clearly?”
She folded her hands in front of her, then slowly pulled them apart. An illusion of the Snow Region mountain range slowly appeared before them. It was a miniature version of the vast range stretching for a thousand miles, and their position happened to place the peak of the Snow Region in the center.
Sikou Yan gestured between the peak of the Snow Region and the sky.
“This is the place closest to the God Realm. Whether one is going to the Eleventh Heaven or the other eight heavens, going from here is the easiest.”
At this moment, the God-Slaying Cauldron hummed and shook.
The illusion created by Sikou Yan vanished. The Snow Region illusion also slowly melted into the air, and the surrounding scene returned to its original appearance, full of modern atmosphere.
Bai Moqing put the God-Slaying Cauldron back into her body, held Xiao Xing’s hand, and said to Sikou Yan, “There is no need for so much trouble. I am not returning to the Eleventh Heaven.”
That was right. After going to such great effort, Sikou Yan’s goal was to bring Bai Moqing back to the Eleventh Heaven.
Now, Bai Moqing was only an immortal cultivator. After her last failed tribulation, her cultivation had fallen from the Immortal Transformation realm, and even now she had not returned to Immortal Transformation. With her current body and cultivation, she could not directly tear open space and pass through the realms to the Eleventh Heaven.
Even if she forced space open, she would end up like last time when she went to the Third Heaven with Yun Su, injured all over by the astral wind.
Sikou Yan was different from her. Sikou Yan had lost part of her cultivation, but she was still a high god. Her body could resist the astral wind between realms. As long as she could tear open space, she could return to the Eleventh Heaven.
“Xiao Xing and I came here not to discuss going to the Snow Region and returning to the Eleventh Heaven from there.”
“No?”
Sikou Yan’s gaze moved from Bai Moqing to Xiao Xing’s face. Their eyes met, and Sikou Yan lifted her lips in a faint smile.
“President Xiao, if Moqing is not here to discuss returning to the Eleventh Heaven with me, then what about you?”
Xiao Xing said nothing.
Sikou Yan withdrew her smile and stood. The immortal robe on her body changed into ordinary mortal clothes with her movement.
“You have always known that the immortal cultivators in this realm can never cultivate into immortals. What waits for them is their bodies returning to chaos and their souls vanishing. Look again at the spiritual energy in this realm. How many tens of thousands of years can it still support? Then look at Moqing. How much lifespan does she have left?”
Xiao Xing’s chest hurt dully.
Her throat felt as if someone had gripped it. She could not breathe and could not make a sound. Dryly, she swallowed.
“You can take her back to the Eleventh Heaven?”
Bai Moqing’s heart suddenly tightened. She turned to look at Xiao Xing in disbelief.
From the corner of her eye, Xiao Xing saw Bai Moqing’s expression and gaze. The pain in her heart grew stronger, but she did not dare turn to look at Bai Moqing.
Sikou Yan answered Xiao Xing with certainty. “Of course. I can bring her safely back to the Eleventh Heaven.”
The little orange cat, who had been hidden in Bai Moqing’s coat pocket all this time, could not listen anymore.
She climbed out of Bai Moqing’s pocket and leaped onto Xiao Xing. Her body returned to its original size. Clinging to Xiao Xing’s clothes, she climbed quickly up to Xiao Xing’s shoulder, then slapped a paw over.
“Xiao Xing, are you stupid? You are handing your own woman to this kind of villain!”
Afraid of hurting Xiao Xing’s clear and pretty face, the little orange cat kept her claws tucked inside her paw pads and did not dare let even the tips show.
“Villain?”
Looking at this little cat demon who had suddenly appeared, Sikou Yan was somewhat surprised. Then, hearing the cat call her a villain, Sikou Yan froze for several seconds before she could not help laughing.
“I have always only played female leads. I have never played villains.”
The little orange cat turned her head and saw Sikou Yan looking at her. That fear attacked her heart again. She pulled back her paws and hid a little behind Xiao Xing.
“Villains never admit they are villains.”
She looked cowardly, and even her words had little confidence.
Bai Moqing let go of Xiao Xing’s hand and carried the little orange cat into her arms.
“Sikou Yan, I do not know what A-Xing wanted to discuss with you, but what I want to tell you is this: no matter what happens, I will not leave her by even half a step, much less leave this place. You said that when the blood moon appears, demons and devils bring chaos. Before that happens, you must return to the Eleventh Heaven. Since that is the case, leave early.”
“It would be best if you left right now,” the little orange cat added, then hid back in Bai Moqing’s arms.
Sikou Yan lowered her head and softly let out a breath. Then she lifted her eyes and asked Bai Moqing, “You really will not go back with me?”
No matter how many times she asked, Bai Moqing’s answer was the same.
Bai Moqing nodded. “Mm.”
There was a knock at the door.
Sikou Yan turned and glanced toward the entrance.
A woman wearing a knit hat and a thick wine-red scarf stood outside the door, carrying a bag of food. After knocking a few times, she stopped.
Sikou Yan turned back and said, “Xiao Qiao is here. I will not leave for now. You…”
Seeing Bai Moqing’s brows furrow, she paused, then continued, “If you change your mind, come find me.”
After saying this, Sikou Yan turned and walked toward the door to open it for Xiao Qiao.
Bai Moqing turned and looked at Xiao Xing, then left first while holding the little orange cat.
The door had very good soundproofing.
Sensing that Bai Moqing and the little orange cat had already left, Sikou Yan stopped and turned back to look at Xiao Xing, who still stood where she was.
“Xiao Xing, she has already lost her cultivation for you. Do you still want her to lose her life for you too?”
Xiao Xing did not answer.
Her eyes looked coldly at Sikou Yan. A few seconds later, she turned and left.
The rippling air returned to calm, and only Sikou Yan remained in the room again.
The sunlight had heated the car until it was hot.
When Xiao Xing returned to the car, Bai Moqing and the little orange cat were not there.
Thinking of what she had just said, Xiao Xing guessed that Bai Moqing was angry with her. Closing her eyes, she looked with her divine sense. Bai Moqing and the little orange cat were already at home.
Opening her eyes, she started the car, pulled out of the parking space, left the neighborhood, and drove straight home.
Feiyue stood in front of the sofa with both hands on her hips, looking at the person sitting on the sofa as if nothing had happened.
Furious, she said, “I am so angry! How could Xiao Xing do that?”
“Do what?”
Calm and breezy, Bai Moqing took a jade slip from her storage ring. She sent her divine sense into it and read the cultivation method recorded inside.
“She actually wanted you to go to the Eleventh Heaven with Sikou Yan! Is she not afraid that halfway there, Sikou Yan will kill you or force…”
Those two words were too vulgar. The little orange cat forcibly stopped, then changed to another word.
“Take advantage of you?”
“Even if none of that happens, is she not afraid you will fall for that villain and never come back?”
Bai Moqing smiled. She lifted her eyes and glanced at Feiyue, then sat cross-legged and released the jade slip.
The jade slip glowed with faint white light and showed words Feiyue could not understand. Bai Moqing formed seals with both hands and set up a small barrier around herself, then closed her eyes.
“Do not think about these things. Cultivate.”
She focused her mind and entered meditation. No matter what Feiyue said, she did not respond again.
Feiyue was too angry to let it go. Even without Bai Moqing answering her, she scolded Xiao Xing for half the day. Only when her mouth grew dry did she stop.
After drinking a large cup of water, she sat nearby and watched Bai Moqing cultivate.
As she watched, she thought of Yun Su. Thinking of Yun Su’s gentle, doting gaze, grievance immediately rose in her heart.
Had Yun Su not said she would be back very soon? Several hours had already passed. Why had she still not come back?
Time quickly passed minute by minute, second by second.
Yun Su did not return. Xiao Xing came back first.
Seeing Bai Moqing cultivating, Xiao Xing was a little surprised.
When she saw the Daoist art floating over the jade slip before Bai Moqing, and saw that Bai Moqing was cultivating with her old immortal cultivation method rather than the secret immortal art Xiao Xing had given her, the surprise in her eyes grew stronger.
“Xiao Mo…”
The misty white barrier withdrew.
Bai Moqing raised a hand, took the jade slip, and got off the sofa. She looked at Xiao Xing coldly.
“I am going into seclusion to cultivate for a while. During this time, you should go back to your own home for now.”
Her voice was cool and without fluctuation.
After speaking, she entered the bedroom. On top of the four-sided Eight Trigrams array flags, she set another layer of restriction and barrier.
Seeing this, Feiyue changed back into the little orange cat and jumped off the sofa. With her tail raised, she ran back to the bedroom too.
Staring blankly at the tightly closed bedroom door, Xiao Xing sighed.
Bai Moqing was angry. She had thrown Xiao Xing into the cold palace. Even the little orange cat had stopped liking her.
Seeing that Bai Moqing really was doing as she had said, cultivating on the bay window after entering the bedroom, Xiao Xing hesitated for a moment. Then she passed through the restriction barrier and walked to Bai Moqing’s side.
