The bar was bright, and soft, soothing music played in the background.
After Xiao Xing arrived, she swept her gaze around the bar. There were not many people. A few customers sat at the counter. One of them had a familiar back, wearing a beige coat, her long hair falling smoothly over her shoulders. Her left hand propped up her head, her right hand held a wine bottle, and she was half sprawled over the bar. It was Xue Shichu, the person who had called for someone to pick her up.
As Xiao Xing walked over, a gentlemanly, elegant man in a suit reached Xue Shichu first. He held a blood-red cocktail in his hand, leaned close beside Xue Shichu, and shook the glass. “Miss, you are drunk. Do you want me to take you home?”
Xue Shichu acted as if she had not heard him and gave no reaction at all.
Xiao Xing walked to her side. Her cool gaze glanced at the man, and she said, “No need.”
Her tone was calm, but it made people feel an inexplicable chill in their hearts.
The man in the suit froze slightly and explained, “I mean no harm.” Then he left with his glass.
Xiao Xing’s gaze returned to Xue Shichu. Smelling the alcohol on her, she frowned and glanced at the bottle in her hand. “Coming to a bar in the daytime. Do you not need to work?”
Xue Shichu finally lifted her head. Her dark circles were heavy, and her eyes were full of blood vessels. She looked even worse than the time she had once done three surgeries in a row. Her eyes were hazy and unfocused as she looked at Xiao Xing. She tugged at the corner of her mouth and gave a faint smile. “You came.”
A bitter smile. Drinking herself into a complete stupor.
Without asking, anyone could tell something had happened to Xue Shichu. But what could make the always self-disciplined Xue Shichu act like this?
Xiao Xing wanted to ask, but Xue Shichu had already braced herself on the bar and stood. She was far too drunk. Her body was weak, and her head was heavy. After swaying twice, she fell onto Xiao Xing.
Xiao Xing, who disliked close contact with outsiders, reflexively pushed Xue Shichu away. But Xue Shichu clutched her clothes tightly. One hand even climbed onto her shoulder, and she said limply, “Moqing, take me home.”
Tilting her head, she looked at Xiao Xing’s suddenly cold face. She blinked, then changed her words. “Xiao Xing.”
As the sun rose higher into the sky, its warmth grew stronger.
Bai Moqing stood on the balcony, gazing outside.
There was a pot of emerald-green cat grass on the balcony, freshly grown. Bai Moqing turned her eyes aside. Feiyue was squatting beside the cat grass, plucking at it for fun.
“Feiyue, are you not going to keep Yun Su company?”
Feiyue lifted her head and glanced at Bai Moqing. “She will not let me.” She patted the dust off her hands and stood. “Qingqing, is your body all right?”
Ever since Xiao Xing left, Feiyue had felt that something about Bai Moqing was wrong in a way she could not describe. Now, looking into Bai Moqing’s eyes, that feeling grew even stronger.
Bai Moqing did not answer. She only smiled gently.
Feiyue hesitated, then stepped forward and tugged at the corner of Bai Moqing’s clothes. “Qingqing, are you still Bai Moqing?”
Her cautious look was especially cute.
Bai Moqing saw what Feiyue was thinking and laughed softly. “It is me, little orange cat.”
Hearing that “little orange cat,” Feiyue immediately felt at ease. She let out a breath. “You scared me to death. I thought some little demon had possessed you!”
“But…” Feiyue turned back and glanced toward the bedroom. Afraid Yun Su would hear, she lowered her voice and asked Bai Moqing, “Qingqing, when you and Yun Su went to the Third Heaven, did you run into something?”
“Why ask that?” Bai Moqing was puzzled.
“Girls are all very sensitive. My intuition tells me you definitely ran into something.” Feiyue looked certain.
“Girls? Haha.” Bai Moqing raised a hand and rubbed Feiyue’s long hair. Under the sunlight, her flaxen hair looked deep orange. “Nothing happened. I just remembered a few things.”
The bedroom door opened, and Yun Su walked out.
Seeing Feiyue acting like a spoiled little woman as she held Bai Moqing, Yun Su knew the relationship between the two of them was as pure as family. Even so, she still felt a little jealous.
“Yue’er.” She called Feiyue intimately, wanting to call her over.
However, Feiyue only looked at her and did not walk toward her the way she had imagined. Yun Su had no choice but to walk onto the balcony herself.
The balcony was spacious. It was not crowded with three people standing there.
Bai Moqing quietly pushed Feiyue toward Yun Su, then looked at Yun Su. “What were you doing alone in the room?”
Yun Su’s expression froze for an instant.
She did not know whether she should tell Bai Moqing about what was on her back. That blood lotus mark had formed from Bai Moqing’s blood. It could not be wiped away or removed. At first, it had burned hot, and even now its temperature was still higher than her body.
“My inner breath was in disorder, so I went to regulate it.” Yun Su answered with a smile, deciding for now not to tell Bai Moqing and Feiyue, so they would not worry.
Feiyue held Yun Su’s arm. Hearing her say this, she reached out and touched Yun Su’s chest. Under her palm, Yun Su’s heartbeat pounded harder with each beat. Feiyue’s brows twisted with worry. “Yunyun, your heart is beating so fast. Did you not finish regulating your breath?”
As she spoke, her hand kept touching back and forth over Yun Su’s chest.
Bai Moqing felt embarrassed just watching. Yet Feiyue’s eyes were still pure and innocent.
Poor Yun Su. She was being teased until her whole body burned, but she still had to force down the stirring in her heart and pretend she felt nothing. She pressed Feiyue’s hand down and lied, “Almost.”
Ding-dong.
The doorbell suddenly rang.
The three people standing on the balcony turned toward the door at the same time. Their divine sense passed through the door and saw four people standing outside. An Huaigu and Tang Yue were supporting Xue Shichu on either side, while Xiao Xing pressed the doorbell with no expression on her face.
Glancing at the electronic password lock on the door, An Huaigu could not hold back her curiosity and asked, “President Xiao, Little Bai did not tell you the password?”
Xiao Xing gave a soft “Mm.”
She was not embarrassed, but An Huaigu and Tang Yue both became embarrassed at the same time.
President Xiao and Little Bai’s relationship, it seemed, was not as good as they had thought.
Feiyue was about to open the door, but Bai Moqing stopped her. She turned to Yun Su and said, “You two avoid them for now.”
Yun Su nodded. When Feiyue asked with an unhappy face why they had to, Yun Su pulled her back into the bedroom.
The door opened.
Seeing Bai Moqing standing behind the door safe and sound, An Huaigu turned and looked at Xue Shichu, whom she was supporting. She said in surprise, “Little Bai, you really are all right!”
After chasing out of the company and failing to find Xiao Xing, An Huaigu had returned to the meeting room. After she and Tang Yue arranged to postpone the meeting, they left the company together and came to Bai Moqing’s home.
It was just that coincidental. Downstairs, they ran into Xiao Xing and this unfamiliar woman. After asking with concern, they learned that Bai Moqing was fine.
As for why President Xiao had brought back a drunk woman, An Huaigu felt she needed to find a chance to ask Bai Moqing in private. If something was wrong, she had to remind her, so her Little Bai would not turn into Little Green.
“Mm, I am fine.” Bai Moqing stepped aside to let them in.
An Huaigu and Tang Yue helped Xue Shichu sit on the sofa. As soon as they let go, Xue Shichu collapsed onto the sofa, long since unconscious.
An Huaigu and Tang Yue did not stay at Bai Moqing’s home for long. After sitting for a while, they made an excuse and left.
Bai Moqing boiled water and made honey water.
Xiao Xing sat on the sofa, looking thoughtfully at Xue Shichu.
Bai Moqing brought over the honey water after making it. Seeing that Xue Shichu did not look like she could drink it for now, she set the cup on the coffee table beside them.
“A-Xing, how did Doctor Xue drink herself into this state?”
Xiao Xing shook her head. “I do not know.”
Seeing Bai Moqing look at her as if saying, You actually do not know? Xiao Xing pulled Bai Moqing down to sit beside her. “This is private. We cannot pry into it without permission.”
The sound of deep, sleeping snores came from the sofa.
Bai Moqing turned back to look at Xue Shichu. “We just let her sleep like this?”
There were only two bedrooms at home. One belonged to her and Xiao Xing. One belonged to Feiyue and Yun Su. There was no extra room.
Xiao Xing said, “Let her sleep on the sofa. We will ask when she sobers up.”
With this sleep, Xue Shichu slept for a full five hours. By the time she woke up, the sun was already sinking in the west.
“Mm…” Xue Shichu held her forehead and sat up. Her mind was not completely clear yet when Bai Moqing’s voice suddenly came beside her ear.
“Awake?”
Xue Shichu’s heart jumped hard in fright. “Moqing?” She looked around. “This is your home?”
Bai Moqing handed the honey water, which had long since gone cold, to Xue Shichu. “Mm. A-Xing brought you back.”
What had happened at the bar was blurry. Xue Shichu thought back. She had called Bai Moqing. Later, it became Xiao Xing answering the call. In the end, it really had been Xiao Xing who went to the bar to pick her up…
She gulped down the honey water in one breath and let out a long sigh. “Where is Xiao Xing?” She handed the cup back to Bai Moqing.
“She went to the company and has not come back yet.”
As soon as she finished speaking, the sound of the door opening came from the entryway.
Xiao Xing had returned.
Xiao Xing changed into her house slippers and walked to the living room. Seeing Xue Shichu sitting on the sofa, looking like she was fully sober, she asked, “What happened?” Then she sat down on the sofa beside her.
Xue Shichu clenched her fists.
Xiao Xing caught sight of the small movement and knew she found it hard to speak. “If you do not want to say it, you do not have to.”
Bai Moqing poured another cup of warm water and brought it over. “Doctor Xue.”
Xue Shichu lifted her eyes and looked at Bai Moqing. She accepted the cup and held it in her hands. The warmth of the water passed through the cup into her palms and seeped into her body, driving away the cold in her heart little by little.
Xue Shichu sighed. “It is a long story. To put it simply, I seem to have fallen for my sister-in-law.”
At the words sister-in-law, Ye Gelan appeared in Xiao Xing’s mind. Once, while waiting at a red light, she had seen Ye Gelan in the car of Xue Shichu’s older brother, Xue Shiqin.
Bai Moqing’s heart suffered an enormous shock.
“You… what did you say?”
She could not believe it.
Falling for her sister-in-law? Was that not stealing a woman from her own brother?
Xue Shichu lifted her eyes. Her eye rims slowly reddened. “I fell for my sister-in-law.”
Then she thought that Ye Gelan had not married her brother yet. He had only brought her home to meet the elders.
Xue Shichu took a deep breath. “My future sister-in-law.”
