The television was a little loud. Bai Moqing picked up the remote and lowered the volume.
Feiyue glanced toward the bedroom, grabbed Bai Moqing’s wrist, and begged her, “Qingqing, do not turn it down. Make it a little louder instead.”
The television could cover their voices. Although it would not stop Xiao Xing or Yun Su from eavesdropping at all, it could at least make Feiyue feel safer.
Bai Moqing hesitated briefly, then turned the volume up until it was even louder than before.
Qingqing was so considerate.
“Qingqing.” Feiyue hugged Bai Moqing’s arm closely and leaned her head on Bai Moqing’s shoulder. “When you had not come back yet, I was pretty happy. But now that you are back, I feel a little scared about being with Yunyun.”
From Feiyue’s tone, it sounded as if she wanted to regret it.
Bai Moqing set down the remote and turned to look at Feiyue. On the face of this girl whose feelings had just awakened, Bai Moqing saw the same confusion she had felt back when she first fell for Xiao Xing.
After thinking for a moment, Bai Moqing comforted her. “Your cultivation and Yun Su’s are very far apart, and your relationship changed suddenly from friends to lovers. Feeling afraid is normal. After you spend more time together, it will not feel this way.”
What Bai Moqing said was not quite what Feiyue was thinking. She was not afraid of the gap in cultivation.
Yun Su was a flood dragon born from the spiritual energy of heaven and earth. From the moment she was born, her cultivation was destined to be higher than demon beasts born from parents. What Feiyue feared was what Yun Su wanted to do with her.
Her face reddened. Feiyue said shyly, “Qingqing, that is not what I am scared of. I am scared that Yun Su wants to dual cultivate with me…”
By the end, her voice was almost too soft to hear.
Fortunately, Bai Moqing’s hearing was excellent. She heard every word. Bai Moqing did not quite understand. “Did you not always want to find someone to dual cultivate with? Why are you scared now that you have a partner?”
She faintly felt this was not simple.
Feiyue fell silent. Bai Moqing waited for a long time, thinking Feiyue was about to tell her some earth-shaking secret. Unexpectedly, what she waited for was a question in return.
“When you and Xiao Xing dual cultivate, are you not scared?”
How had this suddenly become about her and Xiao Xing?
Xiao Xing, who was changing the bedsheets, stopped when she heard Feiyue’s question. She turned and saw Bai Moqing’s expression, then could not help smiling.
The little cat demon had actually asked Xiao Mo about this kind of thing. It seemed she was destined to be the one underneath.
Xiao Xing was very curious how Bai Moqing would answer.
“I have not dual cultivated with her.” Bai Moqing straightened her expression. “But the first time, I was indeed a little afraid.”
She sighed softly, and her eyes dimmed. “Speaking of that, it was not our first time.”
Not the first time!
Without thinking, Feiyue asked, “You had another woman?” She sat up straight with a whoosh and stared at Bai Moqing with wide eyes, unable to believe it.
Then she remembered Bai Moqing was a cultivator. Over thousands of years, she must have liked many people. Feiyue’s bright eyes returned to normal, and she looked at Bai Moqing with an expression that said, You do not need to explain. I understand.
Bai Moqing smiled. “It is not what you are thinking. Many things happened between Xiao Xing and me. Across thousands of years, I have only had her.”
Seeing curiosity fill Feiyue’s eyes, Bai Moqing rubbed Feiyue’s head and rested a hand on her shoulder. “Let us talk about you and Yun Su instead. The things between Xiao Xing and me cannot be explained in only a few words.”
She turned to look at Xiao Xing. Their gazes met and blended without any barrier between them. Bai Moqing smiled. She still had many memories with Xiao Xing. She wondered when Xiao Xing would return all the memories she had taken away.
Feiyue’s voice sounded beside her ear. Bai Moqing turned back.
Feiyue said, “Qingqing, have you noticed that I turn back into a cat very easily? I am afraid that when I dual cultivate with Yunyun, I will suddenly turn back into a cat.”
Bai Moqing imagined the scene of someone in her arms suddenly becoming a little orange cat at the height of excitement, and she burst out laughing.
“In the end, your cultivation is still too low. You are not like Yun Su, who can stay in human form all the time.”
There had been only a handful of times when Yun Su had changed into her original form. As for Feiyue, she often turned into the little orange cat, tucked her paws under herself, and lay on the sofa or windowsill. Sometimes she would go several days without taking human form.
Feiyue pouted angrily. “I can stay in human form all the time too!”
“Then what are you afraid of?” Bai Moqing thought perhaps all women in love were like this, worrying about gains and losses, afraid some accident would affect their feelings.
When she thought of herself, had she not also had many worries? Had she not feared she and Xiao Xing could not keep walking together?
“I am just afraid.” Feiyue lowered her eyes.
Yun Su heard every word of their conversation clearly. When she heard Feiyue say, “I am just afraid,” her heart ached dully.
So she could not give Feiyue peace of mind.
Bai Moqing patted Feiyue. “If you are afraid, tell Yun Su.”
Feiyue nodded.
Bai Moqing stood and said, “Go in. Yun Su is waiting for you in the bedroom.”
The moon appeared very early tonight. It rose halfway into the sky, glowing with a cold white light, just outside the window.
Feiyue entered the bedroom. Yun Su sat cross-legged on the bay window, forming seals with her hands as she cultivated. Pale moonlight fell over her like silk. Her presence carried a natural dignity that looked down on all living things. Feiyue stood in the doorway and stared, dazed.
Only when the sound of a door closing came from next door did Feiyue return to herself. She turned and closed the door, then quietly took a deep breath before walking toward Yun Su.
A thick, soft cushion covered the bay window. Since winter had arrived, a coffee-colored coral fleece blanket had also been spread over it. Feiyue sat beside Yun Su on the bay window with her back to the glass. She turned her head and called softly, “Yunyun.”
Then she asked, “You heard everything Qingqing and I said, right?”
Yun Su gave a soft “Mm.” She opened her eyes. Seeing Feiyue’s pitiful look, she could not help holding Feiyue and bringing her to the bed.
The two rolled once across the bed. Yun Su looked down at Feiyue from above. “Are you afraid when I am like this?”
As she spoke, a powerful aura spread from her body.
Feiyue was so shocked she could not speak. Usually, Yun Su held back her dragon aura and stayed beside Feiyue like an ordinary person with no magic power. Now that she suddenly released it, the powerful dragon aura made Feiyue, a little demon, want to kneel down and kowtow to her.
But before Feiyue could kowtow, Yun Su withdrew her aura, turned over, and knelt beside her.
Yun Su said to Feiyue, who was still lying down, “No matter how frightening I may be, when I face you, I am always careful. I am afraid you will not like me. Feiyue, please do not be afraid of me, all right?”
Feiyue propped herself up on the bed and sat. Looking into Yun Su’s gentle, smiling eyes, the fear in her heart faded bit by bit. She held Yun Su’s hand. “Then can you be gentler with me from now on?”
Was Yun Su not gentle enough with Feiyue already?
Still, Yun Su nodded and promised her, “I will be very gentle.”
She did not realize that when Feiyue said “gentler,” she meant gentler during certain things.
Outside the window, the moonlight slowly dimmed. Yun Su, who was facing the window, lifted her eyes and said in surprise, “Feiyue, look at the moon.”
The bright moon in the night sky was slowly turning red.
A blood-red moon. Strange and bewitching.
Seeing the red moon, Feiyue smiled. She took Yun Su’s hand and walked to the window to look at the moon. “Yunyun, did you know? When I was born, the moon in the sky slowly turned blood-red just like this.”
She turned and tightened her hold on Yun Su’s hand. “That is why my mother named me Feiyue.”
“So that is why.” Yun Su looked again at the blood moon on the horizon. “I used to wonder. Your fur is clearly orange, so why were you not called Orange… mm…”
Before Yun Su could finish, Feiyue stood on tiptoe and kissed her lips. Yun Su’s pupils widened for an instant, then softened in the next. It was rare for Feiyue to be this warm and active. Yun Su slowly closed her eyes, wrapped her arms around Feiyue’s waist, and as the blood-red color gradually covered the whole moon, their kiss deepened.
The curtains in Bai Moqing’s room were drawn, so she did not see the red moon outside. Xiao Xing was reading. While turning a page, she glanced at Bai Moqing, who was playing on her phone. Seeing Bai Moqing’s eyes suddenly brighten with excitement, Xiao Xing was about to ask what she had seen when Bai Moqing lifted the quilt, got out of bed, and walked to the window.
The curtains opened, revealing a blood moon before them.
Just as the internet had said, there was a blood moon tonight.
Bai Moqing turned and asked Xiao Xing, “A-Xing, have you ever heard this saying? When a blood moon appears, demons emerge.”
Xiao Xing closed her book and smiled faintly. “Is there not already a little cat demon at home?”
