Night fell. After Xiao Xing finished her shower, she took a book and lay on the bed to read. The bedroom door was left slightly ajar, with a gap about two fingers wide. Bai Moqing’s voice came clearly through the gap from the living room.
In the living room, one person and one cat crouched beside the coffee table. While turning a page, Xiao Xing lifted her head and glanced outside. She happened to see Bai Moqing rubbing the little orange cat’s head.
“You are not a two- or three-year-old child anymore. Why do you want to sleep with me?”
The little orange cat lifted her paws and hugged Bai Moqing’s wrist. The small body she used to have had grown several rounds fatter, making her look cuter and cuter. She was also much better at acting spoiled now.
“I just want to sleep with you. The weather is so cold. I can warm your bed, and I can warm your hands and feet too.”
“Someone already warms my bed.” Bai Moqing glanced toward the bedroom. Xiao Xing had her head lowered over a book, quiet and peaceful.
“I am fluffy. I am warmer than Xiao Xing!” The little orange cat kept praising herself.
Bai Moqing glanced toward the little orange cat’s bedroom. Yun Su was sitting cross-legged on the bed, breathing in and out as she cultivated. A faint golden dragon circled around her. Anyone could see how seriously Yun Su was cultivating.
Bai Moqing drew back her gaze and interrupted the little orange cat. “Is this because of Yun Su?”
Bai Moqing felt like a therapist right now, trying hard to find the other person’s knot so she could treat it properly, even if the other person was a little cat demon.
Her words struck the little orange cat right in the heart. The little orange cat froze for a few seconds, then tugged at Bai Moqing’s sleeve, signaling for Bai Moqing to come closer.
Bai Moqing did as asked. She leaned her ear near the little orange cat’s head and slowed her breathing, ready to listen to the little orange cat’s true feelings.
Who knew the little orange cat would cling to her shoulder and meow nonstop into her ear?
It was all cat language. Bai Moqing could not understand a single sentence.
This was no attitude for communication at all.
“I do not understand.” Bai Moqing turned to look at the little orange cat. “I have never studied beast language. You are the first demon beast I have ever known. If you do not want to tell me the reason, then sleep on the sofa tonight.”
A small towel blanket was folded neatly in the corner of the sofa. Bai Moqing carried the little orange cat from the coffee table to the blanket.
“This blanket has always been kept for you.”
The first time Feiyue had turned into human form in front of Bai Moqing, Bai Moqing had used this blanket to wrap around her body. The little orange cat scratched the blanket, lay down, turned her head to look at Bai Moqing, and sighed for a long time. It seemed hard for her to speak.
“I think I have fallen for someone else…”
It was obvious who she had fallen from and who she had fallen to.
The person who had been focused on cultivating felt her heart shake hard. Yun Su immediately pricked up her ears. Sadly, after saying that one sentence, Feiyue did not say anything else.
Bai Moqing sat sideways beside the little orange cat. The expression on her face was not the shock the little orange cat had imagined, but a faint smile, as if she had known this long ago.
Instead of continuing the topic of liking someone, Bai Moqing asked Feiyue, “Yun Su is cultivating. Do you want to cultivate too?”
She had only meant for Feiyue to go back to the room and cultivate with Yun Su, but she unexpectedly poked Feiyue’s sore spot.
Thinking of the huge gap between her cultivation and Yun Su’s, a gap she could not catch up to even on horseback, with no chance of seeing Yun Su’s back, Feiyue’s whole cat body wilted.
“Speaking of that, Yun Su is even older than my grandma.”
Was she saying Yun Su was old?
Yun Su immediately got off the bed. She had to go explain a dragon’s age to Feiyue. By human standards, her current age was the prime of twenty years old, and she would stay in that prime forever.
But when she reached the door, she stopped sharply.
If she rushed out like this, would that not clearly show she had been eavesdropping?
Yun Su sat back on the bed.
The little orange cat, now trapped in love, began worrying about many things. Bai Moqing was not a qualified therapist. Seeing the little orange cat so tangled she started pulling at her own fur, Bai Moqing left behind one sentence.
“Think about it slowly.”
Then she slipped back into the bedroom.
Click. After the door closed, the sound of the lock turning came through. Xiao Xing lifted her head and looked at Bai Moqing, her eyes gentle. “Finished having a heart-to-heart with the little cat demon?”
She had only just asked when Bai Moqing had already changed into thin sleepwear and lay down beside her.
Xiao Xing put down the book and pulled Bai Moqing into her arms. Bai Moqing’s warm body gave off an alluring magnolia scent. When Xiao Xing lowered her head and met Bai Moqing’s clear smiling eyes, her heartstrings seemed to be plucked by a slender hand, trembling slightly and giving a pleasant sound.
Bai Moqing answered honestly, “It was not really a heart-to-heart. I only learned that Feiyue has fallen for Yun Su. But Feiyue has some things in her heart that she cannot figure out for now, so she finds it hard to face this feeling.”
Xiao Xing asked, “Because she used to like you?”
Seeing Xiao Xing jealous, Bai Moqing smiled brightly. She held Xiao Xing’s hand and said half seriously, half teasingly, “Yes. The little orange cat liked me before. Now she likes Yun Su. The thing she dislikes most is falling for someone else, but she ended up doing it herself. She was even angry at me for a long time back then because I fell for you instead…”
“Fell for me instead?” Xiao Xing pinched Bai Moqing’s chin and narrowed her eyes slightly.
She had always remembered how considerate Bai Moqing had been toward that little cat demon. On a cold autumn night, in front of everyone, Bai Moqing had taken off her coat for the little cat demon. The scene had looked exactly like lovers.
“You liked Feiyue?”
She was nitpicking words again.
Holding down the hand making trouble on her face, Bai Moqing smiled. “I only like you. Even during the time when I did not remember you, the person I liked was still you.”
Whether it was the blurry back in her memories or the clear face before her now, from beginning to end, she had liked the same person.
That answer showed a very strong will to survive.
Xiao Xing raised her hand and turned off the light, leaving only one warm orange wall lamp. Then she turned and covered Bai Moqing with her body.
The dim light mottled the loose strands of hair falling around them. Looking into Xiao Xing’s eyes, Bai Moqing softly called, “A-Xing.”
Xiao Xing answered with a quiet “Mm.” Fine kisses then fell along Bai Moqing’s neck. Near her ear, Xiao Xing murmured in a low, hazy voice, “Xiao Mo.”
The slightly rising tail of her voice was like a thin white feather brushing lightly across Bai Moqing’s heart.
What would happen next, they both understood without saying it.
The sky changed from dark to light. By the time Bai Moqing opened her eyes, it was already noon the next day.
A faint lemon scent lingered on the pillow. Looking at the empty bed, Bai Moqing remembered the tender scenes from last night.
At the very end, when she had no strength left, Xiao Xing had carried her to the bathroom. Bai Moqing had obediently rested against Xiao Xing’s shoulder and let Xiao Xing wash her.
Water poured from the shower. Xiao Xing squeezed lemon-scented body wash onto Bai Moqing’s shoulder and gently cleaned her. The body wash turned into white foam under Xiao Xing’s palm.
The foam slid with the water onto the tiles painted with delicate lotus and water grass patterns. Xiao Xing’s hands slowly became less proper. Bai Moqing’s last memory stopped in the bathroom.
She could not remember when Xiao Xing had carried her back to the bedroom.
Bai Moqing lifted the quilt and looked at herself beneath it. The bright red kiss marks were very obvious. She quickly covered herself again, hiding those traces.
The sunlight outside the window was excellent. Bai Moqing dressed under the quilt and got out of bed. Just as her feet touched her slippers, the phone on the bedside table suddenly vibrated twice. A message had come in.
When she saw the name Sikou Yan, Bai Moqing’s happy mood dropped at once.
A simple, elegant gray-white wool carpet covered half the bedroom. Sikou Yan sat barefoot on the carpet with a guqin in her arms, facing the window and bathing in warm sunlight as she slowly played.
The long, ancient sound of the guqin clashed strangely with the modern, simple design of the room. Beside Sikou Yan was also a sword case. Its brass lock was fastened tightly, and elegant cloud patterns were carved around it. Bai Moqing did not know what kind of sword lay inside.
She thought of the sword Sikou Yan had used in the film, and then of Sikou Yan’s swordsmanship.
The music did not stop for a long time. Bai Moqing stood silently behind Sikou Yan without speaking.
“Do you still remember this song?” Sikou Yan pressed both hands onto the strings, and the music stopped abruptly. She turned and saw Bai Moqing’s indifferent expression, then smiled. “It seems you do not.”
Bai Moqing did not take up that topic. She asked flatly, “Has your body recovered?”
She glanced at the sword case, then looked at the guqin on Sikou Yan’s lap. For a moment, she felt as if she had traveled through time and returned to ancient days.
“Mm. I have recovered. I should thank you for your medicine and immortal grass.”
Noticing that Bai Moqing’s gaze had fallen on the sword case at least three times, Sikou Yan set down the guqin and picked up the sword case, naturally shifting the topic to it.
“There is a sword inside.”
It was normal for a sword case to hold a sword. But when Bai Moqing saw Sikou Yan’s hand press the lock, warning bells rang in her heart, as if Sikou Yan was about to release some beast or flood.
Tension and worry came from the unknown. When Sikou Yan said, “The sword you gave me,” Bai Moqing’s heart suddenly calmed.
Here came another scene of remembering the past and searching for feelings.
Sikou Yan opened the lock and lifted the lid. On a dark red satin cushion embroidered with a black Qilin beast lay a sword. Its sheath was brown, while the hilt and guard were deep black.
Sikou Yan picked up the sword and drew it out three inches, revealing a section of silver-white blade. Sunlight fell on the shallow blood groove, which carried a cold shine, then reflected onto Bai Moqing’s face.
With a clear ring, the sword came fully out of its sheath. The silver-white blade instantly turned the same deep black as the hilt.
Bai Moqing raised a hand to her side. A deep black sword appeared in her hand, looking exactly like the sword in Sikou Yan’s hand.
Looking at the sword Bai Moqing held, Sikou Yan smiled and said, “The sword in your hand is called Xuan Chi. The one in my hand, when you gave it to me, you told me it was called Ling Chi.”
Sikou Yan stood with the sword in hand. “When these swords were forged, chi-dragon essence was used. A chi-dragon spirit is sealed inside each sword, so their names include Chi.”
The swords were a pair. Naturally, the people were a pair as well.
Sikou Yan looked at Bai Moqing expectantly. She very much wanted to know what Bai Moqing would say next. Would her heart waver?
Bai Moqing looked at the sword in Sikou Yan’s hand, then at the sword in her own. She turned her sword sideways, held it by the blade, and offered it to Sikou Yan.
“Do you want me to give you this sword too?”
Bai Moqing’s reaction was calmer than Sikou Yan had expected. It was not the panic and confusion Sikou Yan had hoped for, nor did Bai Moqing ask what had happened with the sword.
Not only did she not ask, she even generously offered the other sword without the slightest regret.
Just like her name, she was cold, indifferent, light.
Sikou Yan was defeated by this Bai Moqing.
Sikou Yan raised her hand. Bai Moqing watched her steadily, her gaze as calm as an ancient mountain that had never changed.
When warm fingers closed around her wrist, Bai Moqing was not surprised. Instead, she smiled at Sikou Yan. Her calm smile was like that of the high god from the Eleventh Heaven.
Sikou Yan’s mind slipped for a moment. Then pain hit her wrist. Bai Moqing twisted free and caught Sikou Yan’s wrist instead. The scene before them flashed rapidly. When they stood steady again, they had arrived in an open forest. Bai Moqing also released her.
“You brought me here…”
Before Sikou Yan could ask what she wanted to do, Bai Moqing leaped up and gripped her sword with both hands. Sikou Yan lifted her head. A fierce, domineering sword aura attacked her, followed closely by the deep black blade.
Sikou Yan quickly raised her sword to block. The two swords struck with a ringing sound. The sword aura spread out and cut off a lock of Sikou Yan’s hair.
With their sword edges facing each other, Bai Moqing glanced at the falling hair, then lifted her eyes to Sikou Yan’s. With one look, both of them withdrew their swords and stepped back at the same time.
Bai Moqing stood with her sword behind her back. “Show me your swordsmanship. That night, your swordsmanship was incomplete.”
“The day of the film press conference?” Seeing Bai Moqing nod, Sikou Yan smiled and spun her sword in a flower-like flourish.
Her graceful figure moved like a swimming dragon, light and beautiful. Bai Moqing knew every one of Sikou Yan’s moves by heart. Before Sikou Yan even made the next motion after a slanted cut, it had already appeared in Bai Moqing’s mind.
Bai Moqing frowned slightly and called for her to stop. “Enough.”
Sikou Yan drew back the sword she had thrust out. Holding it behind her back, she walked to Bai Moqing. “Moqing, did you discover that my swordsmanship is exactly the same as yours?” A smile flashed in her eyes.
“Mm. It is indeed the same. But that proves nothing.” Bai Moqing’s brows relaxed. “Retreating to advance is not a good method. My heart is completely occupied by Xiao Xing. It was in the past, it is now, and it will be in the future.”
“Do not waste any more time on me.”
Bai Moqing returned the sword to her storage ring. Just then, her phone rang.
“Hello, A-Xing.”
The moment she heard Xiao Xing’s voice, Bai Moqing’s eyes softened, completely unlike the cold rejection from a moment ago.
But Xiao Xing’s voice was cold, with hidden anger. She did not sound at all like the gentle Xiao Xing from last night, who had seemed ready to melt Bai Moqing.
“As chief secretary, you are harder to see than the president herself. If you still are not at work at this hour, are you trying to quit?”
An Huaigu and Tang Yue, who were sitting obediently across from Xiao Xing with hands on their knees and legs together, turned to look at each other. They nodded in understanding.
President Xiao and Little Bai had fought again.
“I will be at the company right away. I will appear in front of you within one minute.” Bai Moqing had just finished speaking when Xiao Xing hung up.
Looking at the call record, Bai Moqing held her forehead. What was wrong with A-Xing? Could she have seen her with Sikou Yan?
She lifted her head and looked at Sikou Yan. Sikou Yan was watching her thoughtfully, as if she had something to say. Bai Moqing put her phone back into her pocket.
“Your body has recovered. I will not see you again after this.”
Her words were clear. Bai Moqing’s attitude had not changed from beginning to end. She did not want to become entangled with Sikou Yan.
Remembering Xiao Xing’s angry tone on the phone, Bai Moqing secretly smiled. She had to hurry to the company and coax her President Xiao.
Just as Bai Moqing turned to leave, Sikou Yan spoke.
Her words made Bai Moqing’s heart tremble and stopped her steps.
“Do you not want to return to the Eleventh Heaven?”
