When morning came, the snow on the roads had already been cleared away by snowplows. Cars moved smoothly along the streets. Those who had to go to work still went to work. The sudden heavy snow had not affected the city in the slightest.
The little orange cat had slept the whole night on the bay window. Drowsy, she stretched and glanced outside. A thick layer of snow covered the ledge outside the window, loose and soft like cotton. The branches were bent under the weight of snow. The snow had stopped, but Yun Su still had not come back.
The smell of porridge drifted from the kitchen. Ever since Feiyue learned An Huaigu had once bought canned cat food for her, she had stopped eating cat kibble. She stretched her neck and sniffed. Century egg and lean pork porridge.
She hated century eggs!
She walked to the kitchen doorway and peeked inside. The one busy in the kitchen was Xiao Xing, not her Qingqing. The little orange cat quietly swallowed back what she had wanted to say and tiptoed backward with her waist low.
The bedroom door was closed, and there was no sound inside. The little orange cat glanced at Xiao Xing, then secretly slipped into their bedroom.
The room had heating on. Bai Moqing was sleeping on her stomach on the bed, most of her body exposed outside the quilt. The little orange cat stood upright and leaned against the edge of the bed, her little head peeking over Bai Moqing’s body.
On that fair, slender back were scattered kiss marks. Around the dip of her waist was a circle of bite marks. It was easy to imagine how passionate they had been last night. The little orange cat tilted her head and gave a gentle meow.
Bai Moqing, tired from the whole night, opened her eyes and squinted at her. The little orange cat’s round eyes were full of curiosity. Bai Moqing mumbled the little orange cat’s name, patted her head, closed her eyes, and fell asleep again.
“Qingqing, it snowed last night.” Feiyue stretched out her soft pink paw pad and used the chance to touch Bai Moqing’s arm. Just as she wanted to go a little farther, someone suddenly lifted her. She turned her head and saw Xiao Xing looking at her with a cold face.
Feeling the quilt move upward, Bai Moqing slowly opened her eyes. Xiao Xing held the cat in one hand and helped cover Bai Moqing with the other. The little orange cat let her paws hang down and gave a pitiful aowu. Bai Moqing turned sideways and looked at Xiao Xing. “A-Xing, let Feiyue go.” Her voice was lazy, hoarse, and soft.
Xiao Xing hesitated for half a second, then released her. The moment the little orange cat was free, she quickly ran out. Bai Moqing bent and moved toward the edge of the bed where Xiao Xing stood, raising her hand to hook Xiao Xing’s finger. “She’s only a little cat. It’s all right.”
“She is a cat demon, and she has designs on you.” Xiao Xing’s tone was calm, sounding as if she was not jealous at all. She sat down sideways, bent over, kissed Bai Moqing’s forehead, and helped her put on clothes. “Other than me, no one can look.”
The little orange cat stayed at home while Xiao Xing drove Bai Moqing to work. The two of them came to the company together every day and left together every day. Everyone understood what kind of relationship they had.
“President Xiao came with Secretary Bai again today.” A woman with heavy makeup and large wavy hair stood by the window holding coffee. When the people already working at their desks heard President Xiao had arrived, they excitedly stopped work and ran over, refusing to miss any possibly exciting scene.
As for what kind of exciting scene, of course it would be President Xiao running into An Huaigu, her former rumored partner.
After Bai Moqing and President Xiao got together, Assistant An had turned grief into drive and worked busily all day. She showed up at the company early in the morning, carried documents out, and did not return until after work. Sometimes, she simply did not come back at all.
Today, they still did not get to see a fight. Instead, they were force-fed romance.
After President Xiao got out of the car, she walked around to the passenger door and waited for Bai Moqing to get out. Once Bai Moqing stood steady, Xiao Xing helped smooth the wrinkles in her clothes and adjusted her scarf. The light gray cashmere scarf wrapped around twice, covering Bai Moqing’s neck tightly.
After fixing it, Xiao Xing lowered her head and said something to Bai Moqing. The two of them smiled at the same time.
“Isn’t President Xiao afraid the chairman will fire her? Dating openly at the company like this.”
Hearing that, the woman with wavy hair laughed lightly in disdain. Xiao Tan, the chairman, had a title but no real power. The person who truly made decisions behind the scenes was the woman showing off her love in the parking lot. She took a sip of coffee and said lightly, “President Xiao is the real boss of our company…”
The moment An Huaigu saw Bai Moqing, her previously cheerful face immediately turned sour. She lowered her head and began playing a phone game.
“Morning, Sister An,” Bai Moqing greeted obediently.
An Huaigu hummed to show she had heard, completely different from the old version of herself who had been so warm she wanted to melt Bai Moqing.
Seeing that An Huaigu and Bai Moqing were awkward with each other, Xiao Xing glanced at Tang Yue and called Tang Yue into her office.
As usual, Bai Moqing poured a cup of coffee for An Huaigu and brought it over. The break room on the top floor had been changed to a silver-gold coffee machine, and the coffee cups had also been replaced with light cream bone china cups with gold cloud-patterned rims and fine crackle glaze.
The coffee beans came from the Blue Mountain region of Jamaica in Central America. Once ground and brewed, the coffee had a rich aroma, smooth texture, and a soft sweetness under the bitterness.
An Huaigu took a sip. It tasted good, much better than before. She glanced at Bai Moqing, set down the coffee, and continued playing on her phone.
She still did not want to forgive Bai Moqing.
“Sister An, President Xiao and I…”
An Huaigu raised a hand to stop her. “I don’t want to hear it.” Seeing Bai Moqing standing beside her without leaving, she kicked lightly and turned her chair so her back faced Bai Moqing. “I’m still unhappy.”
An Huaigu’s meaning was obvious. Bai Moqing needed to keep coaxing her.
Unfortunately, Bai Moqing misunderstood. Hearing that An Huaigu was still unhappy, Bai Moqing sighed softly and obediently returned to her own desk.
An Huaigu turned back and found Bai Moqing busy with work again. Her face darkened. She wanted to throw her phone at Bai Moqing’s hands, but after thinking it over, she could not bear to.
The entertainment investment project was divided into three major sections, one of which was film and television investment. Xiao Xing had only met Vice President Zheng of Yangjing Film and Television last night, yet today Zheng Yanfei brought her assistant to Xiao Group to see Xiao Xing again.
Xiao Xing was chatting with Tang Yue about private matters when Wen Rushui came to knock and tell her President Zheng of Yangjing had arrived. Zheng Yanfei’s name was not on today’s appointment list, and she was downstairs in the administrative reception room, not brought up yet.
After thinking briefly, Xiao Xing said, “Invite her up.” Tang Yue, who stood by the door after opening it, waited until Wen Rushui left, then turned and asked Xiao Xing, “President Xiao, should we ask Manager Zhu to come?”
Zhu Dongliang was the manager of the film and television investment division. All matters related to film investment were handled by him.
Xiao Xing waved a hand to say there was no need and told Tang Yue to brew two cups of tea.
Tang Yue went to the break room to pour water. When she passed An Huaigu’s office, she instinctively glanced inside. An Huaigu was packing her bag. From the look of it, she was going out again.
Thinking of what President Xiao had said to her, Tang Yue turned and walked back. “Assistant An, there is a meeting in half an hour. President Xiao wants you to attend.” She casually made up a reason to keep An Huaigu there.
After speaking, Tang Yue did not wait for An Huaigu to respond and went to the break room. Listening to the sound of Assistant Tang’s high heels moving away, An Huaigu glanced at Bai Moqing and collapsed back into her leather chair.
After stepping out of the elevator, Wen Rushui raised a hand toward Xiao Xing’s office. “President Zheng, this way.” She could not help glancing again at the assistant behind Zheng Yanfei.
Zheng Yanfei’s assistant was a little strange. Her long hair fell loose over her shoulders, and she wore a black baseball cap pulled low. A black mask covered her face. She did not look like an assistant at all. Instead, she looked like a killer preparing to commit a crime.
In the elevator, she had kept her head lowered. After leaving the elevator, she only raised it a little.
Bai Moqing, who had her head lowered as she worked, sensed Sikou Yan’s aura. She lifted her head. A woman in a cap and mask stood at the doorway, bright eyes watching her with a half-smile.
Sikou Yan!
Bai Moqing’s face went white. She pushed her chair away, strode over, grabbed Sikou Yan’s wrist, and left.
It happened too suddenly. Wen Rushui stood frozen in place, dumbfounded. This was the first time An Huaigu had seen Bai Moqing act like this. She froze for a moment, then immediately chased after them.
Zheng Yanfei did not react much, as if she had long known this would happen. She touched Wen Rushui’s arm. “Secretary Wen, take me to President Xiao.”
“But your assistant…”
“It’s fine. They know each other. Nothing will happen.”
An Huaigu watched Bai Moqing pull Sikou Yan around the corner into the stairwell. By the time An Huaigu chased over, both of them were gone. She did not know whether they had gone down or up.
Going up led to the rooftop. An Huaigu thought for two seconds, then immediately went up to the roof. The open rooftop was empty at a glance. There was not a single person there. Bai Moqing and Sikou Yan were not here.
Bai Moqing had taken Sikou Yan beside a stream. Water murmured softly. The banks on both sides were white with snow, and icicles hung from the branches. Bai Moqing let go and stepped two steps back to distance herself from Sikou Yan. Footprints immediately appeared in the plain white snow.
The weather was cold, and every word turned to mist. Sikou Yan removed her cap and mask. Her face held the happy smile of someone who had just pulled off a prank. “Moqing, are you worried about me?”
The elegant scent of magnolia rushed toward Bai Moqing. She frowned. “Didn’t I tell you last night not to appear in front of me again? Why did you still come?”
“I’m here for Xiao Xing, not for you.” Sikou Yan put the cap and mask into her pocket, then leaned close to Bai Moqing. “Moqing, how many parts of me are in your heart now?” Her finger touched Bai Moqing’s chest, and through her fingertip came the sound of Bai Moqing’s heartbeat.
“What do you mean?” Bai Moqing knocked Sikou Yan’s hand away.
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m testing you.” Sikou Yan smiled and held Bai Moqing’s hand.
Besides testing, she was also provoking Xiao Xing.
With a flash of divine thought, Sikou Yan brought Bai Moqing back to the company. When she lifted her eyes, Xiao Xing was standing at the stairwell entrance, expressionlessly watching them.
Bai Moqing, who stood with her back to the stairwell, did not know Xiao Xing was there. She broke free from Sikou Yan and asked in annoyance, “Testing me about what?”
Always speaking halfway, always acting mysterious.
Sikou Yan did not answer. She lifted her chin toward the space behind Bai Moqing, signaling her to turn around.
Bai Moqing turned and saw Xiao Xing. Her heart instantly rose. “A-Xing…”
She was about to explain when An Huaigu poked her head out from behind Xiao Xing. “Where did you two go?”
Seeing Best Actress Yan standing beside Bai Moqing, An Huaigu’s gaze froze. She blinked in disbelief, then blinked again. “Si… Sikou Yan?”
How had the person Bai Moqing pulled away turned into Sikou Yan?
Xiao Xing’s gaze fell on Bai Moqing. Their eyes met, and all of Bai Moqing’s panic and unease entered Xiao Xing’s eyes. Xiao Xing stepped down the stairs and walked toward Bai Moqing one step at a time. “Where did you go just now?” Anger churned in her heart, but her face still had to keep grace and composure.
“President Xiao, we…”
“I didn’t ask you.” Xiao Xing coldly cut Sikou Yan off, glanced at her, then said to Bai Moqing, “Come with me.”
