Why Aren’t You Cultivating Immortality? (GL) Chapter 39

Chapter 39

A wild wind rose.
In the blink of an eye, the whole city sank into heavy rain. The tribulation cloud crouched above the city, rolling and roaring. Three deafening bolts of heavenly thunder struck one after another. White lightning, carrying tribulation power, shot toward the earth without any clear target.
Sensing the person beside her trembling, Xiao Xing tightened her hold on Bai Moqing’s hand.
“Don’t be afraid. I’m here. That thunder tribulation won’t fall on you.” Her eyes were gentle and her tone was certain, sweeping away the fear in Bai Moqing’s heart.
Bai Moqing moved closer to Xiao Xing and stood shoulder to shoulder with her.
Her eyes could no longer see the scene outside clearly. Bai Moqing wanted to use her divine sense to check, but she was afraid her aura would draw the thunder tribulation onto her. All she could do was watch with her eyes.
She turned and glanced over Xiao Xing’s face. Her fair, clean features faced the storm calmly. Xiao Xing had her eyes closed and was using her divine sense to check the situation outside.
Her cultivation is above true immortal, yet she isn’t afraid of thunder tribulation?
A sense of inferiority grew in Bai Moqing’s heart.
She was not worthy of Xiao Xing. She would never be worthy of Xiao Xing.
The clouds circled. After those three bolts of heavenly thunder, the tribulation cloud quieted and did not move for a long time. The rain, however, fell harder and harder.
Bai Moqing’s phone vibrated. A red rainstorm warning message came in, reminding citizens to avoid going outside.
In this weather, even if people were told to go out, they would not go. Only cultivators like Bai Moqing would have the interest to stand by the window and watch thunder and rain.
“Xiao Xing, is someone undergoing tribulation?” Bai Moqing waited a long time, but she did not hear thunder again, so she asked Xiao Xing.
Xiao Xing did not answer. Bai Moqing turned to look at her, hesitated, then closed her eyes and released her divine sense.
Her divine sense had only spread a few dozen kilometers when the quiet tribulation cloud suddenly surged. It was like a giant wave rushing over from the sea. One strike from that wave could drown Bai Moqing’s tiny self.
Bai Moqing drew in a cold breath and quickly pulled back her divine sense. She did not dare probe in that direction again.
Xiao Xing did not move. Bai Moqing did not know where her divine sense had gone.
Suddenly, a streak of light shot into the sky.
Rumble.
A ring of purple light appeared in the clouds, then burst apart in an instant. Like a spiderweb, it spread outward in every direction.
Vast spiritual energy rushed over, covering heaven and earth. Mixed inside it was a strange grief.
Bai Moqing thought of the day she underwent tribulation. She had endured several bolts of tribulation lightning, but in the end, she had still fallen short.
If not for Xiao Xing, she would have already returned to chaos.
Xiao Xing opened her eyes. Bai Moqing was still caught in that grief, unable to free herself, as if she had experienced the ascension tribulation all over again.
“Xiao Mo.”
The soft voice called Bai Moqing’s mind back.
“Ah, what is it?” For a moment, Bai Moqing actually forgot where she was and what she was doing.
A few seconds later, she finally remembered. She was at Xiao Xing’s home, watching the tribulation cloud outside.
She looked up. The tribulation cloud had already scattered. Only an ordinary dark cloud remained.
“Xiao Xing, above immortals… are there gods?”
Bai Moqing had cultivated for several thousand years, but the highest realm she had ever reached was ascension. No one knew where the path of cultivation truly ended. Suddenly, she had a feeling that Xiao Xing would know.
“Yes, and no.” Xiao Xing let go of Bai Moqing, poured a cup of hot water, and handed it to her to calm her down. “Above immortals, there are still many levels. Only after the supreme immortal level comes godhood. And between supreme immortals and gods, there is a gap that is very hard to cross. Compared with cultivating toward godhood, cultivating toward immortality is easy.”
Before Bai Moqing could even swallow the water in her mouth, she suffered another heavy blow.
Holding the clear glass cup, Bai Moqing felt that at this moment, she should be kneeling on the floor and looking up at Xiao Xing, not standing in front of her and meeting her eyes.
Perhaps every separation before had been something Bai Moqing herself asked for. Just like now, Bai Moqing suddenly wanted to forget Xiao Xing, to forget that she had fallen in love with her.
“You’re afraid. You want to give up?” Xiao Xing took the glass from Bai Moqing’s hand and replaced it with her own hand.
Holding Bai Moqing’s hand, Xiao Xing felt her body temperature was lower than usual. A warm current flowed from Xiao Xing’s palm into Bai Moqing’s body. Xiao Xing looked steadily at her.
“Bai Moqing, if you want to forget me, I can take away your memories.”
Bai Moqing’s heart clenched with pain. She knew the answer now. Every separation before had definitely not been something she herself asked for.
Xiao Xing was outstanding. So outstanding that Bai Moqing felt inferior. But it was only inferiority. Compared with how much she liked Xiao Xing, that inferiority was nothing.
“Xiao Xing, why did you take my memories before?”
She wanted her memories back. Xiao Xing had said she had to please her before she would return them.
Then if Bai Moqing did not ask for the memories, and only wanted to know why Xiao Xing had taken them, could Xiao Xing tell her?
“You… really want to know?”
Such a torn and hesitant expression had never appeared on Xiao Xing’s face before. Bai Moqing even seemed to see fear in Xiao Xing’s eyes, fear of saying the true reason out loud.
Bai Moqing did not want to know anymore.
She did not want to make things hard for Xiao Xing.
After a moment of silence, Xiao Xing suddenly spoke. The topic was actually the thunder tribulation from before.
“The one who underwent tribulation just now was a true immortal. How many thunderclaps did you hear in total?”
Bai Moqing did not understand why Xiao Xing suddenly asked this. Three sounds, plus one more.
“Four,” Bai Moqing answered.
Xiao Xing nodded. “It was indeed four. But only the fourth was the real thunder tribulation. With one bolt, that true immortal’s soul was scattered by tribulation power. Body destroyed, spirit gone, returned to chaos.”
Bai Moqing looked at Xiao Xing and waited for her to continue.
“This world has a rule of the Heavenly Dao. It does not allow immortals to exist. The reason you failed the ascension tribulation a thousand times is because of the Heavenly Dao.”
Bai Moqing faintly felt that something was wrong, but she could not say what it was. She thought about Xiao Xing’s words and asked, “But the one undergoing tribulation just now was an immortal, wasn’t he?”
“He was originally in another world and came to this one by accident. As soon as he appeared, he summoned the tribulation cloud. And now, he no longer exists.”
After Xiao Xing explained, Bai Moqing felt even more confused. “But isn’t your cultivation above true immortal?”
If immortals were not allowed to exist, why could Xiao Xing exist?
Under Xiao Xing’s guidance, Bai Moqing finally asked the key question. Xiao Xing let out a long breath and said, “My cultivation is indeed above true immortal, because I am the Heavenly Dao.”
Bai Moqing wanted to faint like the heroines in TV dramas after hearing shocking news. But she did not faint. She was only so frightened that she could not speak.
Her clear, bright eyes were now like those of a startled deer deep in the woods, dazed and lost. Bai Moqing stared blankly at Xiao Xing.
Xiao Xing was the Heavenly Dao?
She was the Heavenly Dao, and also the one who carried it out. Xiao Xing found it hard to explain her identity clearly, but there was one thing she could tell Bai Moqing with certainty.
“If you want to cultivate into an immortal, you must first kill me.”
Only if Xiao Xing no longer existed would this world’s Heavenly Dao rule disappear. Only then could Bai Moqing cultivate into an immortal.
The answer was about to come out.
“You were afraid I would kill you, so you took my memories again and again?” Cultivators had less feeling than ordinary people. For cultivation, they could kill another cultivator, steal the spirit stones and treasures from their body, or even devour the other person’s soul and steal their cultivation.
Bai Moqing did not think she was that kind of person.
She liked Xiao Xing. For Xiao Xing, she could return to cultivation. Also for Xiao Xing, she could stop cultivating.
But from the way Xiao Xing had taken her memories again and again, Xiao Xing did not seem to believe that. Tonight was their first day living together, yet Bai Moqing suddenly wanted to leave.
Seeing Bai Moqing’s thoughts, Xiao Xing hugged her. Her warm, strong arms held Bai Moqing firmly in her embrace, giving her no chance to run.
The slow, hot sound of Xiao Xing’s breathing made Bai Moqing’s body soften. And the words Xiao Xing said beside her ear broke through her heart, leaving her soft all over.
“It wasn’t because I was afraid you would kill me. I took your memories because I didn’t want to delay your cultivation. It was also for my own selfish wish. I wanted to be able to see you forever.”
“Xiao Mo, the first time I met you, I fell for you. Through these long years, I watched you fail again and again, then keep going again and again. That liking became deep love.”
If Bai Moqing did not cultivate, her life would eventually reach its end.
But now, if Bai Moqing kept cultivating and went through the ascension tribulation again, Xiao Xing did not know whether she would still have the ability to save her.
Bai Moqing closed her eyes and slowly breathed out the knot of air trapped in her chest. Then she raised her arms and hugged Xiao Xing tightly.
“Xiao Xing, what should I do? I can’t bear to leave you.”
Xiao Xing understood the deeper meaning in Bai Moqing’s words and smiled gently. “Cultivate slowly. I will always protect you.”
“I’m not cultivating immortality anymore. Cultivation isn’t as good as dating you.” Thinking of Su Xiao from the past and Ye Gelan in the present, Bai Moqing’s uneasy heart, which had been hanging in the air, suddenly found a stable place to rest. Even if she died of old age one day, she would return to this world again. She would meet Xiao Xing again.
Xiao Xing loosened her hold on Bai Moqing slightly. A relaxed smile filled her eyes. She had not expected the knot in Bai Moqing’s heart to be untied so easily.
Bai Moqing glanced back toward the bedroom. In the next second, she hugged Xiao Xing and fell with her onto the soft bed.
“Xiao Mo, what do you want to do to me?” Looking at Bai Moqing lying beneath her, Xiao Xing felt her body slowly heat up. She knew what Bai Moqing wanted to do, but she wanted to hear Bai Moqing say it.
“Didn’t you… ask me to please you?” Bai Moqing’s voice was low. A blush spread from the roots of her ears all the way down her neck. She had never been this bold before. She felt even bolder than a fox spirit tempting a scholar.
Their lips slowly drew closer. Soft lips rubbed gently together.
“Xiao Mo, do you know how to please me?” Xiao Xing’s voice was hoarse, carrying a deep smile and strong affection.
She kissed Bai Moqing’s lips lightly, gentle as a feather, then lifted her head a little and pulled back.
Bai Moqing gazed at Xiao Xing. Their eyes met, and she could not help smiling with her.
The mood was perfect. The teasing had reached just the right point.
Just as the two of them were about to begin exploring the joining of body and heart, desire and spirit, a sudden cat cry sounded beside them. It was almost exactly like the scene on the hotel bed last time.
“Aowu!” The little orange cat had no awareness at all that she had ruined their good moment. She went straight to the point. “Qingqing, Yun Su is hurt. Come home quickly!”
Bai Moqing and Xiao Xing turned their heads. Their hands were still in place. The little orange cat stood on the floor, upright on her hind legs, with her front paws on the bed.
When she saw that Xiao Xing’s hand was inside Bai Moqing’s clothes, her cat heart shattered with a crash.
“You two… are mating?”
The word “mating” left her mouth. Bai Moqing pushed Xiao Xing away, scooped up the little orange cat, and fled Xiao Xing’s home without saying a word.
Xiao Xing sighed with some dissatisfaction. She looked at the hand that had just been pressed against Bai Moqing’s softness, then thought of Bai Moqing’s face, red enough to drip blood as she left, and smiled again.
It was all right. There would be plenty of time.
