Why Aren’t You Cultivating Immortality? (GL) Chapter 19

Chapter 19

Dim ceiling lights, soft light music. In such a beautiful setting, Bai Moqing was so nervous her palms were sweating.
She raised her head. Xiao Xing was looking at her, the corner of her mouth holding a faint smile that was there and not there. In the center of her eyes were reflected the warm wall lamps, and Bai Moqing’s stunned expression.
“President Xiao, which day are you talking about?” Bai Moqing decided to play dumb.
Xiao Xing did not answer. She raised a hand to signal the waiter over and ordered one vegetable salad and two glasses of lemon water.
The water and salad were quickly brought over. Xiao Xing placed the plate before Bai Moqing, picked up her lemon water, and took a small sip under Bai Moqing’s gaze.
“That day, I sat here drinking coffee. I felt a focused gaze, turned my head for a glance, and discovered a little beauty looking at me.”
The words little beauty were slightly teasing. Bai Moqing’s cheeks warmed. This was the first time anyone had called her that.
She quickly picked up the lemon water and drank a sip to hide her embarrassment.
Xiao Xing continued, “The first time I saw her, I felt surprised.” At this point, she suddenly stopped and studied Bai Moqing, a trace of laughter in her eyes.
Bai Moqing instinctively asked, “Surprised? Surprised by what?”
“You tell me first. Why were you staring at me that day?” Xiao Xing took another sip of water. Her gaze swept across the plate, but she had no appetite.
Her heartbeat sped up. Bai Moqing lowered her head slightly. That day, after Dr. Xue went to the restroom, she had looked around. Without realizing it, her gaze had been drawn to Xiao Xing. The way Xiao Xing drank coffee was very elegant, and the expression on her face was very calm. It made people unable to resist looking at her, and keep looking.
Of course, Bai Moqing did not dare tell Xiao Xing these things. Her gaze landed on the water glass, watching her own reflection in the water. She asked instead, “Have you always remembered me?”
Xiao Xing’s expression changed slightly, but Bai Moqing did not stop. She continued, “No wonder on your first day at the company, you greeted me directly.”
So she was talking about the period between their meeting at the Western restaurant and meeting again at the company. Xiao Xing’s expression recovered. “Mm. I always remembered.”
Looking at that familiar face, she said it again in a heavy tone. “I always remembered.”
Across thousands of years, she remembered every single thing that had happened. Only the woman across from her had forgotten everything.
Bai Moqing’s heart suddenly hurt. The pain came and went in an instant, and a sudden urge to cry rose in her heart.
Xiao Xing watched Bai Moqing. Seeing her suddenly frown, she called the waiter to pay and brought Bai Moqing out of the Western restaurant.
After leaving the restaurant, they walked slowly along the shops facing the street. Bai Moqing walked on Xiao Xing’s right, always keeping the distance of one person between them.
When they were almost at the intersection, Xiao Xing stopped and turned to ask Bai Moqing, “Are you going back?”
Bai Moqing had been thinking. When Xiao Xing asked, the small thread of thought she had just found vanished.
“Mm. It is getting late. I should go home.” Her gaze swept around and found a dark place. She said goodbye to Xiao Xing. “President Xiao, I’m going back.”
“I’ll drive you.”
“No need. I can go back by myself.” Bai Moqing turned to leave, but her wrist was suddenly caught. Xiao Xing held her wrist and said, “I will take you home.”
Her fingers were slender and long like green onions. The warm palm pressed tightly against Bai Moqing’s skin, making Bai Moqing feel very comfortable. Her gaze moved upward and landed on Xiao Xing’s face. Bai Moqing lost focus. “President Xiao, do you treat me differently?”
As soon as the words left her mouth, Xiao Xing immediately let go.
“No.” Xiao Xing’s eyes were cold and sharp. “If this made you misunderstand, then I will not send you.” Wearing three-centimeter thin pointed heels, she quickly left.
Really no? Bai Moqing looked at her wrist, where President Xiao’s fingertip warmth still remained. Then she looked at President Xiao’s hastily leaving back and quickly chased after her.
Xiao Xing had just sat in the car and fastened her seat belt when Bai Moqing stood by the passenger side and knocked on the window. Xiao Xing hesitated, then opened the door.
Sitting in the car, Bai Moqing fastened her seat belt and said, “President Xiao, please trouble you to take me home.” She was obedient like someone else’s well-behaved little girl. It was as if her earlier refusal had never happened.
Xiao Xing turned to look at Bai Moqing. Sadness rose in her heart. They were clearly two people who could not be together, yet they met again and again.
She started the car, reversed, left the parking spot, and drove onto the busy main road.
The car was very quiet, so quiet only breathing remained. Bai Moqing looked outside and thought again of Xiao Xing drunk.
When President Xiao was drunk, the cold force around her faded clean away. Her peach-blossom eyes became hazy and alluring, and a warm, gentle smile hung on her lips, giving a familiar closeness.
“President Xiao, why do you insist on making me your secretary?” When Bai Moqing asked this, she kept looking out the window. Her voice was a little soft. She was already prepared for Xiao Xing not to answer.
The car continued forward quietly. Bai Moqing closed her eyes and leaned her head against the headrest.
The sound of braking entered her ears. Bai Moqing opened her eyes. They had arrived at the entrance to her residential complex.
“President Xiao, thank you.”
Bai Moqing reached to unfasten her seat belt. Xiao Xing’s hand suddenly covered the back of hers. The atmosphere instantly became ambiguous. Bai Moqing felt her heart jump into her throat, as if it would leap out.
President Xiao insisted on making her secretary. Could it be because she liked her?
Looking at Bai Moqing with focused eyes, Xiao Xing spoke coolly. “Before, when I asked you to be secretary, it was something I mentioned casually. Today, I made you secretary because…”
Bai Moqing held her breath, waiting for Xiao Xing’s confession.
“You can drink very well.”
Xiao Xing unfastened Bai Moqing’s seat belt for her, withdrew her hand, and held the steering wheel again.
Bai Moqing heard the sound of her heart shattering. It had been struck to pieces.
Again and again, she had imagined too much. So she had become secretary because she could drink.
“President Xiao, sorry. I want to resign.” Bai Moqing clenched her fist, pushed open the car door, and left without looking back.
Xiao Xing did not leave immediately. Sitting in the car, she watched Bai Moqing disappear through the entrance of the complex. She closed her eyes, and her divine sense continued watching Bai Moqing.
After Bai Moqing returned home, Xiao Xing took out her phone and sent her a message: “Tomorrow, I will wait for you at the company.”
The little orange cat leaned lazily against the sofa, holding a small bag of chicken-flavored cat food as she watched a lingering, romantic TV drama. From time to time, she lowered her head and bit two pieces of cat food.
A click of the door suddenly sounded. The little orange cat alertly jumped off the sofa and ran to the entrance. Seeing Bai Moqing open the door and come in, her face immediately showed a strange expression. “Qingqing, why didn’t you come in directly?”
Bai Moqing did not speak. She bent down and took a pair of slippers from the shoe cabinet. The little orange cat noticed Bai Moqing’s gloomy expression, grabbed Bai Moqing’s pants, and climbed onto her shoulder in a few quick moves.
“Bai Moqing, what’s wrong? Who made you unhappy?”
“No one.” Bai Moqing rubbed the little orange cat’s head, signaling for her to jump down.
The little orange cat took the chance to rub against Bai Moqing’s palm. Her little paws firmly gripped Bai Moqing’s shoulder, refusing to get down.
The phone in Bai Moqing’s pocket vibrated. Bai Moqing took it out and saw Xiao Xing’s message. She lost focus.
“Tomorrow, I will wait for you at the company.” The little orange cat sitting on Bai Moqing’s shoulder read it out slowly, word by word. Turning her head and seeing Bai Moqing stunned, she pushed Bai Moqing’s face with her paw pad. “Qingqing, who is this Xiao Xing?”
“It can’t be that superior from a few days ago, right?” Her clever little head guessed correctly in one try.
Seeing Bai Moqing not answer, Feiyue sprang to the floor and changed into human form. “Bai Moqing, are you having an office romance?” Her tone grew heavy, and she looked at Bai Moqing with questioning eyes.
The words office romance pulled Bai Moqing’s drifting thoughts back. Bai Moqing put her phone back in her pocket and answered lightly, “No.”
How could there be an office romance? Even if there were, it would not be with Xiao Xing, but with Sister An.
Thinking of the company’s gossip, Bai Moqing exhaled. Perhaps Sister An saying she liked her was only teasing her. The person Sister An truly liked was President Xiao.
She had personally seen Sister An and President Xiao’s closeness. Looking across the whole company, who dared to call President Xiao Ah Xing?
Then she remembered President Xiao saying Sister An’s younger sister liked her. Bai Moqing rubbed her temples and reached a conclusion: President Xiao could not possibly like her.
Walking around Feiyue, Bai Moqing shuffled into the bathroom in slippers, turned on the faucet, and washed her face with cold water.
Feiyue leaned against the doorframe and blinked. “Qingqing, you look especially like the heroine in a drama who just got dumped.”
A dumped heroine? Bai Moqing pulled down a towel and dried her face and hands. Turning her head, she said with distaste, “A cat should cultivate properly instead of watching random messy dramas.”
When she walked to the living room, the fifty-five-inch LCD television hanging on the wall was showing the male lead pressing the female lead against the wall and forcefully kissing her. Soft moans floated from the speakers into their ears.
Bai Moqing frowned. This was too explicit. It might teach the little orange cat badly. Without another word, she turned off the TV.
“Bai Moqing, why did you turn off my TV?”
“Cultivate properly and watch less television.” Bai Moqing turned toward the bedroom. Before she entered, Feiyue turned the TV on again.
Bai Moqing looked back. Feiyue smacked her lips and watched with great interest. Seeing Bai Moqing look at her, Feiyue smiled with particular innocence. “Qingqing, what does kissing feel like?”
“I don’t know.”
Feiyue’s eyes lit up. “You’ve never kissed anyone?”
Bai Moqing thought about it. Before, she had had the thought of kissing President Xiao, but Feiyue had interrupted her. Before that, for a thousand years, she had cultivated with a clear heart and few desires. She answered, “No.”
Probably no.
Feiyue was clearly excited. “I haven’t kissed anyone either. Why don’t we try?”
Bang. Bai Moqing’s answer was the sound of the door closing.
With her back against the door, Bai Moqing took out her phone and carefully read Xiao Xing’s message again. She lowered her eyes and replied: “Sorry, President Xiao. I still want to resign.”
Just as she was about to send it, she hesitated. Her finger hovered above send, unable to press down.
Her phone vibrated. Xiao Xing sent another message.
Seeing its contents, Bai Moqing froze. Very soon, she smiled, deleted all the words she had typed, and replied to Xiao Xing: “Okay.”
