Li Lingjiang stood in a pool of blood. Around her, sharp swords and blades cut through the air by her cheeks. This new shift almost drained all her strength. Before she could move, someone pulled her firmly forward and protected her with a half-covering posture.
“This is Bai Zhi’s past.”
Yin Wu recognized the scene at a glance. She lowered her eyes to Li Lingjiang. Then both of them realized something, and Yin Wu instinctively held her tighter. “Does it hurt?”
Li Lingjiang gripped the corner of Yin Wu’s robe at the shoulder. Yin Wu’s current identity should not appear here. Li Lingjiang wiped the blood from the corner of her mouth and rubbed it between her fingers. The twisted feeling in her mind made her want to vomit. Her hand tightened, and her awareness blurred.
“My Lord!”
“Get up. Someone asked for you by name.”
Li Lingjiang was dragged to her feet. She looked down and saw that her waist was half exposed, and the clothing only covered half her thighs. In her memory, she had never worn such clothes. For a moment, she felt deeply uncomfortable.
The person pulling her urged impatiently, “Hurry. Do not make the guest wait. Let me tell you, the owner is here today too. Perform well.”
The owner.
Li Lingjiang understood. If Bai Zhi could originally receive guests and her face had not yet been ruined, then this conflicted with both Li Lingjiang’s earlier empathy and Bai Zhi’s own account. This should be the period Bai Zhi most did not want to mention and did not dare discuss.
Even when others accidentally looked into her past, this part had never shown itself. Bai Zhi had even filled in the logic herself.
Li Lingjiang tugged at her clothes. She breathed out and followed them out. Wearing a faint veil, she looked down at the people seated in the high place and could tell at once that one of them was Yin Wu.
There were others around her too. When Yin Wu seemed to see Li Lingjiang arrive, she shifted into a more forward sitting posture and clasped her hands together.
Li Lingjiang had just stepped onto the stage when a group of people followed behind her. Music began at once. She moved her wrists, rarely unsure what to do. If she resisted now, another problem might appear. Her chest was still faintly aching.
She looked toward Yin Wu, who was hidden behind a curtain. Yin Wu seemed to lift it a little, wanting to see her. Li Lingjiang lowered her brows and took a small step back. Her waist was slender and pale. Her lean skin almost made people’s hearts warm. She calculated the time.
Three.
Two.
“Wait.”
Yin Wu lifted the curtain and strode out. She removed the cloak from her body and looked down at Li Lingjiang from above. Her gaze passed openly over the person before her, yet her eyes were clearly aggrieved.
Li Lingjiang was wrapped in the cloak. Yin Wu took her wrist and led her up. Li Lingjiang stood one step below Yin Wu, her tone light. “I thought you were going to wait for me to dance.”
“Can you dance?” Yin Wu asked curiously.
Li Lingjiang said, “No. I am not interested in such things.”
Yin Wu laughed. “Then if I had not stepped in, what would you have done?”
“I…” Li Lingjiang touched her lips with a fingertip. The rouge felt sticky. “Perhaps it would not have mattered.”
Yin Wu was oddly choked by the hidden meaning in her words. She turned back, clearly disagreeing. “No!”
The makeup made Li Lingjiang’s face bright and beautiful, a different kind of charm. She should have looked extremely tempting, yet on her there was an added distance, making people afraid to approach rudely.
It was a rare look. Even if these people were illusions, Yin Wu was not willing to share it.
The young immortal directly led her away and familiarly ordered people to handle the guests. Yin Wu bent slightly. “Do you know what sex slaves are?”
Li Lingjiang had some impression. “I know. In the human world, some people keep women or men addicted to drugs and train them into attendants who receive guests.”
“You mean Bai Zhi was once one too?”
Yin Wu nodded silently. “I am not sure. It is only a guess. The place I was just in was a dirty, messy room. There were about seven or eight people inside. I was wondering whether Bai Zhi’s resentment might also be there.”
“But we do not know where they were finally imprisoned?”
Li Lingjiang followed Yin Wu through twists and turns until they stopped in a private room. Yin Wu moved several ornaments, and only then did a hidden passage behind the wall appear. Cold air kept pouring out, chilling the spine. The weak candlelight nearly failed to show the way.
“It is cold underground. Keep this around you.” Yin Wu tied the cloak’s cord behind Li Lingjiang, still complaining under her breath about why these people had dressed her in such thin clothes.
Li Lingjiang lifted a hand slightly. Yin Wu immediately stopped talking.
The stairs were narrow, and the two could not walk side by side. Li Lingjiang’s gaze was cold. From time to time, screams and crying sounded by her ears. Her fingertips slid along the wall, then suddenly stopped at one place. She bent her finger and knocked, then listened silently for several seconds. “Here.”
Yin Wu raised her brows. “I trust you.”
Li Lingjiang walked down one step. Her palms were cold, and she rubbed them together soundlessly. “I heard their voices.”
The hidden door was soon opened by Yin Wu. As soon as it opened, a thick smell of blood and rot rushed out, mixed with a heavy stench. Screams and pleas for mercy kept coming from inside, making the scalp go numb.
Yin Wu let go and realized her palm was sticky. Even the back of the door was covered in blood that had not fully dried. Her brows furrowed. “My Lord, wait here. I will handle it.”
Li Lingjiang looked at her steadily for several seconds, then nodded. “I will wait for you.”
She leaned against the wall. The empathy was linked to her, and even breathing became difficult. Li Lingjiang lowered her head slightly. Sweat dripped down the side of her face. She knew this was a sign that the illusion was about to collapse completely, but her instinct told her this was not the true end.
Li Lingjiang tried to move her inner power and unexpectedly felt a trace of demonic power run smoothly. Her body was actually being nourished little by little.
There were also her dreams. But the endings had not followed their set paths. She could not say whether it was coincidence or something truly happening to her.
After some unknown time, she supported herself against the wall and stood straight. People began fleeing from the doorway in broken streams. They were disheveled, covered in blood, eyes scattered, knowing only to run outward. She did not know if it was her imagination, but she saw Bai Zhi hidden among the flow of people.
When she looked again the next second, it vanished like smoke.
Frightened voices came from above the hidden passage. The footsteps sounded hollow. Yin Wu helped Li Lingjiang up and asked quietly, “Are you unwell? I set a fire, but nothing seems to have changed. Do you want to rest?”
Li Lingjiang lifted her eyes to look at her. They were very close. Her breathing was carried away by Yin Wu’s and tangled with it. Li Lingjiang was the first to look aside. “Let us go.”
Their hands clasped together as they slowly moved against the flow of people.
The room was on the highest floor. Li Lingjiang lay on her side on the bed, her eyes dark with unreadable meaning. Yin Wu lay down beside her too.
The young immortal seemed unable to sleep. Suddenly, she propped herself up halfway. “That person you like… after we get out, are you going to find him?”
Li Lingjiang gave a hum. “You will just…”
Yin Wu quickly objected. “I will not leave.”
“I at least need to see who it is. What if that person has poor character?”
Yin Wu tugged at the corner of her robe. “My Lord, are you really going to drive me away? My debt has not yet…”
“Why are you so worked up?” Li Lingjiang suddenly turned over, her tone lifting slightly. “I have not finished speaking. Even if the other person is terrible, I will accept it.”
Yin Wu could not understand Li Lingjiang’s thoughts. She lay flat and looked at her, confused. “No, how did you suddenly become like this? Were you tricked, or…”
She suddenly froze while looking into Li Lingjiang’s eyes. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Her lips moved lightly. “My Lord.”
Li Lingjiang lowered her lashes. She reached out and climbed her hand around Yin Wu’s neck, leaning gently closer. There was only an inch between them, and even their breaths were warm. “Yin Wu, I will only give myself one chance.”
When lips met, it was a collision beyond words. No one knew who first recognized the heartbeat. Li Lingjiang’s wrists were held tight and raised above her head. Her waist arched. The wet sound between them at such close distance was a fevered illusion and an irresistible kiss.
Yin Wu turned over, and Li Lingjiang ended up straddling her. Li Lingjiang reached out to press against her. Her lips had been bitten red and swollen. She asked in a low voice, carrying a tremor too faint to catch. “I have kept thinking about when to be honest and speak clearly. Since I recognized my feelings, I felt I should not drag it out. I do not want to wait. After testing you a few times, I finally confirmed it. Whether it is right or wrong.”
She lifted her chin slightly. “Yin Wu, do you only want to kiss me?”
Li Lingjiang’s thoughts were very simple, and she was honest about her feelings. If she wanted something, she would fight for it. She told herself that she liked Yin Wu, liked this person. Even if she did not know why, she still wanted to take the risk.
Her body was improving. Then she had the right to love someone and stay by someone’s side.
Yin Wu felt as if her heart had been seized. She bluntly dissected this strange emotion. The moment Li Lingjiang kissed her first, everything became clear. Her jealousy, her unwillingness, her instinct to protect Li Lingjiang. All the logic suddenly connected.
She closed her eyes. She had never imagined the two of them would end like this.
But she was not afraid. This went against the heavenly path. What a pity. She had already gone against it once.
“Yin Wu, the demon clan has a spell.” Li Lingjiang’s fingertip moved down from Yin Wu’s neck. Her sleeve was pulled into disorder, revealing a smooth shoulder. Her lips were red, and her eyes carried a pull that could hook a person in. “It can let two people share the same magic power and lifespan. It is the highest blessing of the demon clan.”
Li Lingjiang licked her dry lips. She was nervous too. She sat upright, her legs supporting her weight. “I have never used it.”
Yin Wu looked at her steadily. A storm seemed to gather in her gaze. She gritted her teeth, then sat up and hugged Li Lingjiang. Her kisses fell densely along Li Lingjiang’s neck, finally stopping at her earlobe.
The two held each other. Yin Wu’s hand tightened. The bed dipped. Downstairs were noisy voices and cries. Looking at the hollow of Li Lingjiang’s waist, Yin Wu’s voice sounded almost fierce. “My Lord, please grant me your blessing.”
She kissed Li Lingjiang. “Please cherish me a little more.”
