The Demon Venerable Is Delicate and Charming (GL) Chapter 74

Chapter 74

“Madam, you are not paying attention.”
The nanny raised the whip to strike again, but Li Lingjiang reached out and stopped it. She lifted her eyes and swept a light glance over the woman, yet that glance made the nanny freeze for a moment.
Li Lingjiang stood up. Her back was straight, and her hands were tucked away as she lowered her brows slightly. “Nanny truly has fine methods.”
The nanny came back to herself and snorted coldly, her eyes filled with open disdain. “Madam, I am doing this for your own good. You must never go against the wishes of the old master and madam.”
“Yes.”
Li Lingjiang glanced aside, then looked away. She stayed silent, not wanting to bother with her at all.
The concubine wore much thicker clothes today than before, and her makeup was plainer, but she still could not quite hold up her presence. “Nanny, I am going to continue the young master’s bloodline, while Elder Sister still has no news at all.”
Li Lingjiang raised a brow.
The nanny froze, then smiled so widely her brows lifted. “Truly? That is wonderful. Have you told the family head?”
“I have.” The concubine covered her lower belly, looking delicate enough to stir pity. She walked before Li Lingjiang and said softly at her side, “Elder Sister, come find me tonight. I will tell you everything you want to know.”
Li Lingjiang lowered her eyes to look at her and gave a soft hum. The next moment, the whip was about to rise again. Li Lingjiang casually grabbed the concubine’s wrist and pulled her in front of herself. Her cold eyes met the nanny’s. “Go ahead and strike.”
“I do not mind.”
The nanny’s hand hung in midair. She glared and huffed. “Madam, if you had followed this old servant’s methods, you would have given Young Master branches and leaves long ago. You would not have lost one pregnancy and then never had news again!”
A lost pregnancy.
The nanny snapped the whip against the ground. “Do not think you can leave the ancestral hall today. Kneel here and repent before the ancestors!”
Li Lingjiang let go. She rubbed her fingers together, took out a handkerchief, and wiped them. Just as she was about to answer, she stopped and turned as if sensing something.
Yin Wu strode in. Her face was dark, and her eyes carried cruelty. “Let me see who dares!”
“Young Master, I have…” The concubine rushed forward and missed. Yin Wu walked right past her, took Li Lingjiang’s hand, and pulled her close.
Yin Wu glanced at the concubine indifferently. “If you are pregnant, stay where you should be. Why come join the noise? And Nanny, since when is my wife yours to lecture?”
The nanny stepped forward to argue. “But this was the old madam’s order.”
Yin Wu placed one finger against her lips. “I do not want to hear it.”
As soon as she finished, she pulled Li Lingjiang away, paying no mind to the anger behind them.
Li Lingjiang seemed extremely obedient. The light before her was half hidden by Yin Wu’s shadow. Her heart seemed to be struck hard. A hum came from near and far at once, stretching endlessly. In that instant, she seemed to understand something. She did not come back to herself until Yin Wu hugged her from behind.
The young immortal wrapped her arms around her from behind and rubbed her head against Li Lingjiang’s shoulder blade, aggrieved. “Were you hurt?”
Li Lingjiang lowered her eyes to the hands around her waist. Her lashes trembled. Her breathing slowed, and she hooked Yin Wu’s little finger once. She lowered her head. “No.”
She took a deep breath. “That concubine is pregnant.”
Yin Wu gave a hum. “In any case, the child belongs to that scumbag. Besides, this is an illusion. It has nothing to do with me.”
Li Lingjiang pried her hands open, then turned to face her. Her hands rested at her sides. “It seems this person was trapped by love and forced to have a child. In the end, she hanged herself. That concubine told me to find her tonight. The problem should be in the ancestral hall. We will resolve it fully tonight.”
The young immortal agreed. She stared fixedly at Li Lingjiang and felt the other woman still had something to say. “My Lord, is there anything else you want to say?”
Li Lingjiang was silent for a long time. Her fingers curled slightly. She slowly raised her head, eyes half lowered, then lifted them to look at Yin Wu. “I actually like children very much.”
Yin Wu froze.
Then her eyes widened.
“What? My Lord, say that more clearly.” Yin Wu’s mood sank. She quickly analyzed the meaning in Li Lingjiang’s words, and for some reason her chest tightened. “Do you have someone you like?”
That was not right. She watched Li Lingjiang every day, and no outsider had approached her. Ling Xin and the others were even less possible. Yin Wu knew very well that even if she could control a person, she absolutely could not control the heart.
Who Li Lingjiang liked or hated could only be Li Lingjiang’s own matter.
But just thinking about it made Yin Wu feel uncomfortable.
Li Lingjiang said nothing.
Yin Wu took a deep breath and carefully studied her. No matter how she thought about it, it did not seem right. “My Lord, who is it? Is it inconvenient to say? It cannot possibly be Shuang Zixing, can it?”
“You…” Li Lingjiang did not know whether to laugh or cry. “What nonsense are you saying?”
Yin Wu’s eyes went red. “Then you will not tell me. Do I know this person?”
Li Lingjiang paused for a few seconds and watched Yin Wu’s expression. “You know them.”
“That should not be.” Yin Wu sank into thought, her tongue pressing against her cheek. “My Lord, your body has not fully recovered.”
“What does that have to do with my body?” Li Lingjiang took two steps forward and held out her hand. “It is improving.”
How could Yin Wu not know? Not long ago, while Li Lingjiang slept, she had checked several times. She impatiently licked the corner of her lips. “The main question is whether that person is worth it. How did you suddenly fall for someone?”
Li Lingjiang looked at the hand Yin Wu had grabbed. She said softly, “I figured it out. But if the other person is unwilling, then forget it. I will only give myself one chance.”
The young immortal clicked her tongue. Suddenly, she really wanted to make that person’s blood splash across No-Return Mountain.
Li Lingjiang leaned forward to look at her. “Do you not want me to be with someone?”
Yin Wu was silent for a long while after being asked. Only after a moment did she smile and nod openly. “Of course. One more person means one more trouble. Who could be worthy of you, My Lord?”
“No wonder.” Li Lingjiang withdrew her hand and turned toward the bed. “If I get what I wish for, then you would need to leave and attend to your own matters.”
Yin Wu stiffened. “What…”
Li Lingjiang took off her shoes. With her back to Yin Wu, she crossed her legs. Hearing the bed dip behind her, she suddenly turned sideways. “Get down.”
“Huh?” Yin Wu did not understand. “My Lord, what do you mean?”
The young immortal grew nervous. She darted to Li Lingjiang’s side, knelt properly before her, and tears fell at once. “My… Lord.”
Even her voice choked. “Do not abandon me.”
Li Lingjiang looked at her for a while and did not coax her. She turned away and closed her eyes, leaving Yin Wu to silently collect her tears. Only after there was no movement behind her did Li Lingjiang speak. “I meant that I hope you can keep watch over me. I am afraid someone will come in and disturb me.”
She yawned. “I am very sleepy.”
Yin Wu froze for a few seconds. Then she narrowed her eyes and studied Li Lingjiang’s back. For some reason, she felt something about Li Lingjiang had changed, but she could not say what was wrong.
“I was too anxious.” Yin Wu drew a red thread from her sleeve. She had not dared use magic power, afraid it would rebound onto Li Lingjiang. She hooked a length of thread and flicked it from where she stood. It caught the door exactly and held it shut. No matter how others pulled, it would not move.
Li Lingjiang turned over. Her sleeve had slipped up, revealing her forearm. A thin silver bracelet circled her wrist, with several small bells hanging from it. Their sound was very soft. She casually placed her hand in the empty space beside her and seemed slightly surprised. “You are very suited to this thread.”
Yin Wu grew proud. “Of course.”
“I will sleep for a while. If I seem trapped in a nightmare, do not wake me.” Li Lingjiang closed her eyes, and her breathing gradually evened out.
Yin Wu lay beside her, moved Li Lingjiang’s arm to a better position, and pulled her sleeve down again. She watched Li Lingjiang’s sleeping face, thoughts tugging at her. She seemed unable to imagine what it would look like for this person to be with someone else.
To Yin Wu, Li Lingjiang was too great a surprise. She had completely left the path Yin Wu had set.
How could a person like this fall in love? Or rather, how could someone pull her down into such a fall?
Li Lingjiang sank into the dream again. She leaned by the door and quietly watched this farce. She saw herself forced back again and again. She saw herself forced to kneel and kowtow.
A group of people seemed like demons crawling up from hell, condemning her over and over.
“You cannot give birth yourself. Why did you still make Young Master lose his heirs?”
“Your heart is truly hateful. Pity my unborn child.”
“The little madam only learned she was with child today, and you could not bear it. You just had to harm a life that had not even seen the world.”
“No wonder you are destined to have no children. Your heart is too poisonous.”
“I will make you repay blood with blood. I will tell Young Master and the old master. They must give me justice!”
Go die. Stop living.
Each word was like a bone-piercing sword, sinking little by little into her body. Li Lingjiang saw herself lose her soul. She actually raised the white silk and hanged herself, with nothing left in her eyes.
Rather than Li Lingjiang, it was more accurate to say this was that person’s obsession.
She took a deep breath and slowly lowered her eyes.
“My Lord.” Yin Wu gently shook her.
Li Lingjiang opened her eyes. Her body felt stiff. She gave a muffled sound before propping herself up. The door was being struck as if it might break at any moment. She stared toward it for a while, then put on her shoes and stepped down.
Yin Wu followed behind her and said quietly, “I will follow you.”
“All right.” Li Lingjiang did not refuse. She opened the door. The first thing she saw was the pale-faced concubine. She stepped forward and followed.
As in the dream, they entered the ancestral hall. Waiting for her was a group of people ready to demand guilt. The concubine collapsed to the ground and cried, accusing Li Lingjiang of being cruel enough to harm the child.
Li Lingjiang lowered her head to look at her, the corner of her mouth lifting. She obediently let herself be forced back step by step, just like in the dream. The piercing voices sounded again, repeating the same scene. The exact same sequence made her grow even more suspicious.
“Madam, let me tell you, you cannot escape now. You should reunite with your child underground.”
The candles suddenly went out. The concubine’s face twisted in the dark, and the shadow behind her stretched in a strange way. Her voice sounded as if it held blood. “Go die. Why did you fight me for Young Master? Why did you not obey Women’s Virtue? Why did you run away?”
“Why did you not listen to Young Master? Is this place not good? Look, retribution has come. Your child is gone, yet you still refuse to remember the lesson.”
Li Lingjiang caught the key words. She suddenly turned back toward the Women’s Virtue painting and instantly understood.
But as she stepped back, the white silk silently dropped behind her, trying to loop around her tightly.
Li Lingjiang abruptly stopped. She seemed to smile and called softly, “Yin Wu.”
A red thread appeared from the darkness like a ghost in the night. In an instant, it shredded the painting into pieces. At the same moment, Li Lingjiang’s hand was held.
“My Lord, will it be better if I hold you?”
“This way, we probably will not be separated so far again.”
Li Lingjiang suddenly thought that perhaps it was true.
