The glacier melted in an instant. Li Lingjiang brought Yin Wu to the side and ordered her to dry herself at once. She stared at the young immortal’s hand for a long while without speaking.
Yin Wu looked at her from the corner of her eye and quietly curved her lips. Her palm could be cut open. By controlling the aura inside, she had originally wanted to give herself a natural reason, but who would have thought she seemed to have made Li Lingjiang angry instead?
“My Lord,” the young immortal called softly. After bandaging her own wound, she looked toward Li Lingjiang’s hand, which had been stained dirty by her.
Li Lingjiang breathed out softly. She pinched the bridge of her nose before asking, “How did it happen?”
Yin Wu explained, “I fell into the water and ran into other movements. By accident, I found where this environment’s core was. During the fight, I was careless and got hurt.”
“Next time… be careful.” Li Lingjiang paused for half a second before speaking.
Yin Wu nodded with a coaxing smile and said she understood. Her eyes moved slightly. Suddenly, she tugged the corner of Li Lingjiang’s robe. She did not look at Li Lingjiang, and her voice dropped. “Your wrists. Did you ruin them yourself?”
Beneath the sleeve, Li Lingjiang could not stop trembling. She took a deep breath and lowered her eyes to stare at Yin Wu. A trace of pain flashed through her eyes, too quick to catch.
Including the six of them, fewer than thirty people remained. They did not rest much longer. After gathering themselves, they went straight back on the road. Everyone’s spirits were very low. Wen Si gave them fasting pills and let them take them, no longer taking them back afterward.
Li Lingjiang’s intuition told her they were almost there.
After walking for less than two hours, they saw a cliff. It was so deep they could not see the bottom, and there was no other road before them.
Shi Baisheng’s face was heavy. “What do we do?”
Wen Si’s expression was not good either. He leaned forward to look down, then actually gritted his teeth and looked back at them. Before anyone could react, he jumped straight down.
“Wen Si!”
Shi Baisheng shouted, but aside from the echo, there was no other sound. Just as he was dazed, the sound-transmission talisman at his waist suddenly moved. “Senior Brother Shi, I am fine.”
“Where are you now?”
“At the bottom of the cliff. Do not worry. Jump down.”
Wen Si’s voice seemed to give them a calming pill. At this point, there was no other way back. Shi Baisheng jumped down first, and the others looked at one another before following one by one.
Li Lingjiang watched them quietly, her beast ears trembling. Her expression was relaxed. Only after a while did she speak. “Did you hear it? The sound of death.”
How could there be no trap on a cliff? The ones able to survive were all people with inner power. She was not surprised by this result at all. Aside from the ordinary people, fewer than ten were likely still alive.
“My Lord.” Yin Wu held her hand. “Let us go.”
Li Lingjiang steadied her breathing. She raised her head and made a gesture to Ling Xin. Without hesitating again, she leaped down. The remaining four did the same, without even pausing their steps.
The wind in the air beat against Li Lingjiang’s beast ears, hurting a little. She had just curled them inward when Yin Wu held her. The young immortal said softly beside her ear, “It is a little cold.”
Before Li Lingjiang could refuse, her toes had already felt the ground. She slowly pushed Yin Wu away. Below her gaze was a lake surface hiding waves.
With one movement, faint ripples spread.
The surviving people had grown used to death. Though they still felt some pity in their hearts, they said nothing. Their final goal was Heaven’s Mandate and Li Lingjiang’s group.
No one knew where the light below the cliff came from. Along the way, they did not encounter any obstacle. Just as suspicion rose in their hearts, Wen Si suddenly stopped. His voice could not hide its excitement. “It is… Heaven’s Mandate!”
Heaven’s Mandate!
Those two words excited all of them. Before them was a stone wall, and the patterns carved on it were exactly what they had seen in their dreams. As long as they broke through this door, they would succeed.
“Fellow Daoist Wen.” Li Lingjiang stood behind them, as if she did not care about their changes.
Wen Si drew his sword. His smile was already gentle. “There is no choice. We have reached this step. Let us rely on strength.”
As soon as he finished, he rushed over with his sword. The rest of the group followed. Wen Si threw several paper talismans from his sleeve and stuck them to the backs of several people. In an instant, wind and clouds surged, and the blades shone with dazzling light.
Li Lingjiang did not join the battle. She steadily retreated, half-opening the Jade-Bone Fan. She moved through the chaos without even mussing her hair. She walked to the stone wall and brushed her fingertip over the complex patterns. Her eyes lowered halfway. Suddenly, the corner of her lips curved. Her pupils turned blood red, and demonic markings gradually climbed over her cheeks. With a cut of her finger, she smeared a drop of blood full of Demon Realm aura onto the stone wall.
She immediately stopped the bleeding. Her eyes held a viciousness rarely seen in ordinary times. She slowly moved the remaining power inside the fan and exchanged a glance with Yin Wu. The two cooperated with unspoken understanding. The young immortal grabbed Wen Si by the collar and forced him back with great strength. In the next moment, the fan pierced straight into his body without missing.
Wen Si’s eyes widened, as if he could not believe he had been defeated like this. His body drifted to the ground like broken paper. Blood seeped from the corner of his mouth, and his eyes remained open in death.
Li Lingjiang looked over Wen Si’s body. She kept feeling something was wrong. It should not be this simple.
“Wen Si!” Shi Baisheng roared. His moves grew sharper and sharper, but before Ling Xin and the others, he was still not enough. In the end, Feng Luan directly gripped his throat. The force was so great that he lifted Shi Baisheng into the air, then threw him beside Wen Si.
“Who… exactly are you?” Shi Baisheng sensed something wrong. “You have been hiding your strength all along. What are you trying to do?”
Li Lingjiang stood steadily behind him. “We came to find Heaven’s Mandate.”
As soon as she said this, a possibility appeared in her mind. She suddenly turned back to look at the stone wall, surprise showing in her eyes. She dragged Shi Baisheng’s body backward and said harshly, “Wen Si! You are not him.”
Yin Wu suddenly turned her head to look at her.
In the next second, the body that had already gone cold suddenly opened its eyes. Wen Si seemed to mock them. “Aiya, you actually discovered it. Why did you not follow the plan?”
Shi Baisheng’s eyes widened. “How is that possible… Were you not dead?”
The others also showed shock. Ling Xin and the other four blocked them behind. Seeing this, their bodies could not stop going cold.
Wen Si sat up. His expression was no longer gentle. Instead, it became much more bewitching. He laughed loudly, eyes full of disdain. “Yes. But I died long ago.”
He rose from the ground and patted away dust. His finger touched his lips. “What a pity. You were the one communicating with the Immortal-Entering Sect, right? Truly, I should have tricked more people into coming.”
His gaze suddenly turned poisonous. “Now I cannot let you live.”
Shi Baisheng looked at him in shock. Wen Si only lightly rubbed his fingers, and Shi Baisheng felt his whole body swell. His organs were squeezed. His eyeballs warped, and even the scene before him twisted. His heart was full of confusion and unwillingness. In the next moment, several huge explosions rang out one after another.
Flesh and blood burst in the air, then quickly turned into dust and vanished.
Li Lingjiang was once again shocked by how ruthless Wen Si’s methods were. She tilted her head slightly and examined him. Yin Wu stood beside her, also quietly observing.
“You are that magic artifact,” Yin Wu suddenly said. Her fingers moved lightly, as if she had connected something. Her tongue pressed against her cheek, and her breathing grew slightly faster.
Wen Si clapped. He looked at Yin Wu with approval. “You saw through me. How could that be? I clearly hid so well. Is that not right, Demon Venerable? Oh, no. Former Demon Venerable now.”
He laughed madly. “Wen Si was swallowed by me long ago. This body is only a shell that holds me. I am a magic artifact born from heaven and earth. Sadly, for thousands of years, I have been trapped by this damned No-Return Mountain. Then one day, I suddenly discovered human resentment could help me increase my cultivation. Soon, I would be able to take my true body and leave this place.”
“The so-called Heaven’s Mandate was naturally my doing. But if these people were not greedy, how could they have believed me? At first, I wondered how you knew. So you deliberately came to find me. I am truly honored.”
Wen Si flicked his hand and spoke carelessly. “The later these people died, the heavier their resentment became. It was simply excellent nourishment. Do you know how Shi Baisheng died?”
He covered his mouth and laughed lowly, madness spreading through his eyes. “Because of the fasting pills I gave them. As long as the number was enough, with one gentle push from me, they would explode and die.”
He curved his lips. Taking advantage of everyone’s brief opening, he flashed directly before Li Lingjiang. The wind he brought stirred her hair. Their eyes met, and Wen Si said softly, “I like your body very much. Why not give it to me?”
His form changed in an instant. He abandoned the useless body and became a chaotic, shapeless black shadow. He wanted to devour Li Lingjiang.
How could Yin Wu let him have his way?
She moved extremely fast and pulled Li Lingjiang into her arms, taking the heavy blow head-on. Blood seeped from the corner of her mouth. Under Li Lingjiang’s stunned gaze, Yin Wu pushed her away, then immediately threw out the red thread without even taking a breath.
Ling Xin and the others also joined in. His voice was cold and ringing. “A mere evil artifact thinks it can seize My Lord’s place? Truly wishful thinking.”
He drew a short blade and no longer hid his strength as he slashed at Wen Si. In an instant, the blade tip hummed from every side.
Li Lingjiang had been pushed by Yin Wu until her back pressed against the stone wall. Her breathing was disordered for several moments. That figure was reflected in her pupils. She could have dodged. She did not need Yin Wu to help her at all. No matter what, Wen Si’s strength was not weak, not to mention whatever method he had cultivated that kept all of them from seeing he was transformed from a magic artifact along the way.
Her heart beat a little faster. She opened her mouth and breathed lightly, doing her best to control her breath. Flute sounds surged from every direction. Her body trembled, and she could not bear it as she bent forward. The sound of a soft whip striking the ground covered the faint sound of her vomiting a large mouthful of blood.
Li Lingjiang’s mind was chaotic. She raised her hand and looked at the Jade-Bone Fan. Suddenly, she thought of something.
All things that take form could be transformed. She was its natural bane.
The evil artifact’s power was surging. Though Wen Si gradually began to struggle, he still did not panic. He was struck hard into the stone wall, with broken rocks falling on both sides of him. The evil artifact slowly rose. Cunning flashed through his eyes. Black energy kept pouring from his hands. The sky darkened. The ground was covered by black shadows, and countless dead souls appeared. Among them were many faces Li Lingjiang recognized.
So this was what had been waiting for them here.
Dead souls were the source that replenished his power. Who knew how many people he had harmed?
Wen Si looked at them proudly. Qi San could no longer hold back. He removed his black robe, formed a curved blade in his hand, and faced Wen Si head-on. How to completely resolve the evil artifact was the urgent matter before them.
“Ling Xin.” At some point, Li Lingjiang had come to stand behind him. She held out the fan. “Lend me a little demonic power. That will be enough.”
Ling Xin turned back to look at her in confusion, but he still did not refuse. The transfer was fast. In only a breath, he was fighting Wen Si again. Five people against one was not difficult, but because Wen Si had taken form from an artifact, it was hard to catch his true body.
Li Lingjiang stepped back a few paces. The Jade-Bone Fan floated in the air, and the black dragon shrank its body and coiled around it. She did not plan to give him another chance. This act would prove that from now on, the Demon Realm had nothing to be ashamed of.
Cold light reflected in her eyes. She whispered in a cold voice, “In my name, I grant blessing.”
Yin Wu instantly looked over in shock. She had never imagined Li Lingjiang still had such powerful explosive force.
She did not even have time to act.
Li Lingjiang, you really do surprise me.
The destruction of the evil artifact left Li Lingjiang unable to support herself. She collapsed to the ground. With a light hook of her finger, she drew the Jade-Bone Fan back. Yin Wu’s robe hem appeared in her vision. Just as Li Lingjiang gripped the fan, she weakly lifted her eyes and met Yin Wu’s gaze. Their hands had only just clasped when Li Lingjiang frowned tightly and stumbled into Yin Wu’s eyes in shock. In the next moment, her awareness was pulled away, and focus slowly vanished from her eyes.
“My Lord!” Yin Wu caught the falling woman. Realizing something, she suddenly looked toward the place where the artifact had just vanished. A trace of aura still remained in the air. She checked Li Lingjiang’s pulse.
It was empathy.
Yin Wu clenched her hand. She took a deep breath and told Ling Xin to take care of them. Ignoring all other words, she first tried to pull Li Lingjiang’s awareness back. Their foreheads lightly touched.
Her thin lips moved softly. “Wait for me.”
