Li Lingjiang did not know how long she had slept. When her awareness returned, daylight was already bright. Only when she propped herself up on the bed board did she realize her hands were so weak they had gone soft. She coughed dryly twice and turned her gaze toward Yin Wu, who was working hard while sitting on the floor inside the room.
“You… what are you doing?” When Li Lingjiang spoke, she was startled to find that her voice had grown so hoarse it was almost unpleasant to hear.
Yin Wu turned her head in surprise and delight. The sleeve on her right arm had been torn away, leaving only a glaring wound. She lifted her blood-covered hands and said happily, “Demon Lord, you have slept for almost three days. You scared me to death.
“I am processing the demon dragon right now. I was afraid I would not hear your voice out in the yard, so I moved it inside without permission. Look, I covered it with a magic shield. You do not have to worry that the blood will splash everywhere.”
She stood and stepped aside so Li Lingjiang could see.
Then she asked carefully, “Demon Lord, your internal injuries are very serious. His Lordship the Demon Lord came to see you and brought medicine. Do you want to drink it first?”
Li Lingjiang gave a small “Ah” without much emotion and only said, “Shuang Zixing came.”
She slowly moved her body and tried to circulate the demonic power inside her. Before she could last even the blink of an eye, violent pain swept through her organs. Li Lingjiang rolled up her sleeve and hurriedly covered her mouth. Thick blood all spilled onto her robe.
So I am already weak to this point?
Li Lingjiang seemed to be stating an objective fact. She did not care much as she gathered her messy collar. She looked sideways, and her gaze softened quite a bit.
“I am fine. You do not need to worry. I know my own body very well. When the Demon Lord came, did he say anything?”
Yin Wu seemed to resent that Li Lingjiang cared so little for her own body, but she could do nothing and let her be. After washing her hands clean, she brought the medicine bowl over and carefully placed it in Li Lingjiang’s hands.
“Demon Lord, His Lordship said you need rest. He had the demon physician prescribe new medicine and sent over many replacement bandages.
“He asked what Immortal Lord Qingyun said when he came. I told him everything exactly as it happened.”
Li Lingjiang’s hand paused. She moved the rim of the bowl a little farther away and lowered her eyes to look at the young immortal crouching on the floor. She frowned lightly.
“What did you say?”
“No, I mean-” Yin Wu came back to herself and realized what she had said. She waved her hands in panic and hurried to explain, “I really did come back very early. I knew you were discussing matters, so I did not make a sound and disturb you. But I was worried about you, so… anyway, Demon Lord, please do not blame me. I was wrong.”
Her voice grew smaller and smaller, and her body bent lower and lower until she was almost knocking her head on the ground.
Li Lingjiang thought, with no surprise, that if she did not stop her, she might already receive two loud kowtows.
“I am not blaming you.”
She spoke, sounding as if she had been amused. Her fingertip gently hooked Yin Wu’s collar and lifted it upward. “Get up.”
Yin Wu glanced at her nervously. “Demon Lord, you are not angry?”
Li Lingjiang blew on the medicine. Smelling the bitter scent, her expression grew much more grave, but her tone remained gentle, even softer than before.
“Why would I be angry? In this matter, you helped me. If you had not called me in time, I am afraid there would have been a hard fight. You also know my body. I certainly could not have taken three moves.”
Yin Wu let out a breath of relief. Then she complained to Li Lingjiang with a face full of indignation. “I truly did not expect Immortal Lord Qingyun to act like this. Did the Demon Realm not already state its position about the trouble in the human world? Why is he still using that as an excuse?”
Halfway through, she seemed to think of something. She looked at Li Lingjiang in confusion. “Demon Lord, from the look on your face, did you not know about this?”
Yin Wu secretly observed Li Lingjiang’s expression from the corner of her eye. Satisfied, she hooked the corner of her lips, then hid it again very quickly.
So she really did not know about this. The good show had begun.
Li Lingjiang paused in place, puzzled. Her eyelashes trembled twice. “Indeed… I did not know about this.”
Her breathing shook twice. She only felt the iron-rust taste in her throat stir the pain in her head even worse.
In these years, she had intentionally let Shuang Zixing handle matters, but all of them had been within the range of what she knew. How had she missed this one matter? Shuang Zixing should already have had the idea of hollowing out her authority. It was only that the change had come too quickly, and even he himself had not been ready. Looking at it this way, those old fellows of the demon clan had also agreed.
It was true that Shuang Zixing was afraid of her leaving, and it was also true that he respected her. Perhaps it was only that-
“He has his own ideas now. And with my demonic power fading, I was always destined to be abandoned.”
There was no sadness in Li Lingjiang’s eyes. There was more of a weariness after release. Her gaze fixed somewhat stiffly on the medicine bowl, and without changing expression, she drank it all in one go.
