Yin Wu escaped the danger without much obstruction and landed steadily on solid ground. She drew an empty line, turned her back, and grew a flame. With a casual motion, she set it down, and a raging fire instantly burned. Then she casually threw a few things into it as cover.
The flames only followed the range she had marked, constantly swallowing the dead wood and revealing the path that had originally been hidden. The mud seemed to sense pressure, and the sinking speed became faster. Li Lingjiang hooked Little Black under the jaw. “Take me out.”
Little Black’s body instantly grew much larger. His tail became like a stretchable chain, hooking around Li Lingjiang’s upper body. He easily flung her to Yin Wu’s side. In truth, she could have stood steady, but the young immortal still caught her in a full embrace.
Yin Wu’s arms held her. Li Lingjiang easily pushed her away and said on a breath, “Yin Wu, let go of me.”
“My Lord, the path is out.” Yin Wu released her and pointed to that road. Then she weighed the red thread. “I will go save them first.”
Li Lingjiang nodded. Seeing Yin Wu leave, she crooked a finger and signaled Little Black over. More or less, people like them could see the fates of this group. Before life and death, some fates were bright, while others were dim and lightless. But even that could not decide the final life and death. What their fate became still depended on their own fortune.
She told Little Black to watch while rescuing people and not damage their fates. Golden light flashed through the dragon’s eyes. He shook his tail to tell her he understood.
The firelight swayed more and more. Li Lingjiang’s black robe almost merged with the quiet night. With her back to the light, she also seemed to belong in the heat. She had no way to help them. Alone, she quietly walked to a tree, lowered her eyes, and let her beast ears droop, hiding her many thoughts.
The mud was black, as if it had settled there for a very long time. Swimming in it created a visual impact that was rather nauseating. The more people escaped, the tighter the mud contracted. Some people could not help crying out softly from the pain.
Wuzhi used a soft whip, and only he could cooperate with Yin Wu. The others pulled people up from the bank.
Shen Duoyi had already sunk past his waist and had not pulled himself out in time. He struggled to move forward but found it useless. Sweat covered his forehead and dripped down in fine drops. He blinked, as if suddenly thinking of something.
His expression grew excited. “Quick! Everyone lie flat on top and move forward bit by bit!”
After shouting, Shen Duoyi directly spread his remaining upper body across the mud. He tried to pull himself up, and sure enough, he no longer sank. He shook with excitement. “It works. I can get out!”
Many people looked over when they heard this. Joy gradually colored their eyes. Wen Si also copied him. Carefully, he pulled his body free, and his breathing immediately quickened. “Everyone be careful. This method works.”
The mood was instantly infected. Even Li Lingjiang lifted her head to watch.
Tang Wusuo successfully pulled his legs out. He lay on the mud and panted. Suddenly, he felt someone tug his trouser leg. “Brother, pull me, will you?”
“You?” Tang Wusuo looked back and frowned slightly. He knew this person. This man had shouted the fiercest earlier. Tang Wusuo gave a cold laugh. “Did you not think I was timid and afraid?”
“Ah, no, no. I was wrong.” The man laughed dryly twice and muttered, “Who would have thought you were really right?”
Tang Wusuo snorted twice. The movement looked simple, but it required strong core strength. Ling Xin and the others had first gone to save people whose strength could not hold out, so they were quite far away.
“Hold on to me. Do not pull too hard. We will move over bit by bit. Otherwise, both of us will run out of strength.” In the end, Tang Wusuo could not harden his heart and prepared to take the other man with him.
Their arms slapped against the mud with very soft smacks, covered by rough, uneven panting. The elastic ground slowed them more and more, and they could clearly feel the situation worsening.
“Quick, save her!”
“Heavens, if you sink down, you lose your life, right?”
“Just thinking of it feels suffocating. Being smothered alive.”
“…”
Not far away, someone sank. Tang Wusuo stole a few glances and suddenly felt uneasy, as if drums were beating up and down in his heart.
On that side, Wen Si finally dealt with the sudden situation. No one knew why someone had suddenly sunk. Yin Wu’s red thread was still hanging from her hand. She seemed unwilling to mention the matter and only looked meaningfully at the surviving woman.
Wen Si noticed Tang Wusuo’s situation and quickly walked over. His brows were tightly furrowed. “Do not panic. I am coming.”
That one sentence immediately swept away the unease in Tang Wusuo’s heart. He grinned happily, wishing he could lie flat on the ground. His strength had been draining quickly because he was carrying another person. Now, with a sharp release of breath, he moved forward. “Senior Brother Wen, you finally came.”
Tang Wusuo tested the ground bit by bit with his foot. He was getting closer and closer to stable ground. His toes touched something like a hard block. Suspiciously, he kicked it, then looked back. Discovering he could use force, joy filled his face.
“Brother, let go. I will go up first. You crawl forward a little, and then I will catch you from the bank.” Tang Wusuo happily turned back and signaled to him.
The man opened his mouth and made an “Ah” before unwillingly loosening his fingers. His face instantly turned pale. In that very instant, he found himself sinking at a visible speed. His eyes widened in terror. Tang Wusuo’s back seemed to blur. A survival instinct nourished like vines made him grab the person in front by the trouser leg.
“Tang Wusuo! Tang Wusuo, do not leave me alone!”
He screamed, his grip growing stronger and stronger.
Tang Wusuo turned back in panic and explained, “I am not leaving you. Otherwise, why would I have brought you from the start? Let go. Do not drag me down, or neither of us will live. Senior Brother Wen!”
Wen Si was also irritated by the scene before him. He warned in a low voice, “Let go first. The two of us will keep you alive!”
The man only felt as if half his body had already disappeared. It was as if a huge force was pulling from beneath his feet. His body shook with fear. He watched Tang Wusuo’s trouser leg slip from his hand.
He stared blankly at Wen Si, but could no longer see his face clearly. At that moment, a thought spread in his heart: he had been abandoned and treated as a stepping stone. His only thought was that he could not die like this.
The man clenched his hand. Blood threads appeared in his eyes. In the next second, a huge potential burst from his body. He directly grabbed Tang Wusuo’s ankle and dragged him back. Using that chance, he stepped on Tang Wusuo’s body and threw himself toward safety.
He turned over and stared with empty eyes as Tang Wusuo lay motionless in the mud and disappeared before him.
Dead.
Wen Si still held the posture of reaching out to pull someone up. In shock, he turned his neck and looked at the man. In disbelief, he questioned him. “Are you mad?”
“I am not mad. I only wanted to live! Who knows whether he was willing to pull me or not? Either way, we would have had to go through this step in the end.” The man’s mind worked very quickly, and he immediately found a reason for himself.
Wen Si laughed once. His eyes grew fierce. “Who told you it would become this in the end?”
The man was clearly still shaking. He swallowed. “Is it not true? Senior Brother Wen, surviving is a person’s instinct. I felt myself sinking just now. I did not want to die. I abandoned so much. How could I die like that?”
“Senior Brother Wen.” The man lifted his head to look at him, his expression becoming a little mad. “This is the law of survival, is it not?”
Wen Si’s face gradually became clear in his eyes. His expression seemed both indifferent and judging. The man slowly bent his knees and hugged himself, forcing himself to swallow the fact that he had just killed someone.
Wen Si quietly watched him. Only after a long while did his strength seem to leave, and his brow lifted slightly.
By the time everyone escaped the forest, it was already midnight. Only after truly leaving that strange place did they suddenly sit on the ground. With this final disaster, four people had died in total.
Only those involved knew exactly how they had died.
Li Lingjiang followed behind. Her gaze moved quickly over the group, and her eyes held more calm than before. She quickly found Yin Wu, who had been busy the whole time, then hooked Little Black flying beside her onto her shoulder.
The young immortal also felt her gaze. She searched and found Li Lingjiang. After seeing who it was, she bit her lower lip and revealed a smile. She stepped over, holding the white dragon in her arms, and asked in confusion, “Strange. Why do I not see Tang Wusuo?”
Li Lingjiang lazily lifted her eyelids. Her voice was calm. “He died.”
Yin Wu’s steps stopped. Her expression turned somewhat strange, and her tone lowered. “Died?”
“How did he die?”
That should not be. She had calculated Tang Wusuo’s fate. A person chosen by heaven had only just awakened this time. How had he died?
Li Lingjiang calmly looked straight at her. Her eyes seemed to have darkened a great deal. “He suffocated. But there should not have been much pain. It only took two or three seconds.”
After saying this, she turned her face aside. “Find a place to stop first. Night has already fallen.”
Yin Wu also sensed something wrong. She immediately connected it with what she had seen earlier. She gave a light snort and pressed her tongue against her cheek. Then she quickly came to Li Lingjiang’s side and boldly, yet secretly, held the other woman’s icy hand.
Li Lingjiang discovered that Yin Wu’s actions were growing bolder and bolder. She did not stop her and only lowered her eyes to watch.
As if dissatisfied with something, Yin Wu let go of her hand. Then she clasped both of her own hands together and quickly rubbed them warm before taking Li Lingjiang’s hand again. She said nothing, only pulled forward with a certain force. Her head was slightly raised, as if she did not want to give these people even one glance.
Yin Wu watched Li Lingjiang from the corner of her eye and secretly pressed her lips into a smile. By the time anyone looked again, her expression had already faded. Her tone held thorns. “Are you not leaving? Are you waiting for us to collect your corpses?”
