The Demon Venerable Is Delicate and Charming (GL) Chapter 36

Chapter 36

“Why are you crying again?” Li Lingjiang wiped the tears from the corners of Yin Wu’s eyes with her fingertip. Then she drew back her hand, signaling for Yin Wu to help her sit up.
The high fever and the wounds on her body made Li Lingjiang’s face deathly pale. She leaned against the wall. Yin Wu had worried and warmed it with magic first before letting her lie there.
Li Lingjiang had no strength, so she could only tilt her head slightly. Her lips were dry and cracked. Yin Wu searched through her storage pouch and took out a pill. She broke it in half and fed it to Li Lingjiang, then found a water flask and carefully brought it to her lips. Her nervous eyes did not blink, as if afraid one careless move would ruin everything.
“Not speaking?” Seeing her like this, Li Lingjiang felt a little amused. She obediently cooperated with the young immortal’s movements. “Do not be so careful. I am not that delicate.”
As soon as Yin Wu heard this, her tears fell again against her will. She hummed twice and pouted in dissatisfaction. “You still say you are not delicate. My Lord, you say that every time, and every time you lie to me.”
Li Lingjiang felt a little queasy. She moved her fingers, and her gaze landed on her palm. Bloodstains could still be seen there. “My fault.”
The young immortal caught her gaze and covered Li Lingjiang’s hand at once. She muttered, “It is my fault. I did not change your dirty bandages in time. Do not look. As long as you take good care of your body, that is better than anything.”
Yin Wu wiped away her tears. She crouched on the ground, propped her chin in her hand, and looked at Li Lingjiang. Her tone was very serious. “My Lord, you are thinking too much right now. You say you do not want this or that, but in truth, you spend more mental strength than anyone. Recovering from illness is already hard. Yet you still torment yourself.”
“Mm. I will not.” Li Lingjiang still used the same words. Her tiredness could be seen with the eye.
Seeing this, Yin Wu could not say more. She shifted a little and whispered, “Rest well. I will stay beside you and watch over you.”
She stared at the outer cloak on Li Lingjiang for a long while. With a hook of her finger, the string of copper coins lost its shine. Through it, she could sense the unfamiliar aura around Li Lingjiang. The clothes had been kept with Ling Xin for a long time, so they had naturally picked up another person’s scent.
Yin Wu moved her fingers and thought that next time, such a thing could not happen again.
Li Lingjiang carried Yin Wu’s mark on her body. Adding anything else would not look good.
She sat cross-legged beside Li Lingjiang as if cultivating. In truth, her thoughts had long drifted. She still had to pay attention to the specific cause of Li Lingjiang’s body problems and think of a way to suppress them. More unexpected changes would be bad.
Yin Wu opened her eyes. She touched the surface of Beiluan Mountain and murmured, “Where exactly are the soul bones that anchor the mountain array?”
Night grew thicker. Yin Wu borrowed a pile of firewood and lit the space. She continued sitting cross-legged. The two of them kept this kind of silence, yet it did not feel dull.
When Wuzhi came in, this was the scene he saw. He held fruit given by Wen Si and stood in place without words for a while. Only after Yin Wu sensed him did she open her eyes and ask, “Lord Wuzhi, is something the matter?”
“Wen Si gave some fruit and asked if you wanted any. What were you doing just now?”
Yin Wu did not care. She pretended to suddenly understand. “Lord Qi San said he never sees me cultivate, so how can I protect My Lord? I suddenly understood what I lack. So I am absorbing the essence of the sun and moon.”
“…”
Qi San sat by the fire listening to them. Suddenly, his nose felt a little itchy. He paid it little mind and rubbed it.
This was the first time Wuzhi had seen an immortal absorb the essence of the sun and moon in the Demon Realm. Besides, Yin Wu was not even circulating spiritual power. Her skill at lying with open eyes really was impressive.
Li Lingjiang’s body had been carefully laid flat by Yin Wu. Yin Wu had removed the outer cloak from the feverish person and covered her with it like a blanket. Li Lingjiang did not sleep long. During that time, she woke again and again, but she did not make a sound. She settled herself for a while, then fell back into a dazed sleep.
Only half a pill had allowed the exhausted person to rest properly.
Yin Wu patted dust from herself. Her steps were very slow. She checked the temperature of Li Lingjiang’s forehead. Only after seeing the fever had gone down did she breathe in relief. Yin Wu smiled with comfort. She tucked Li Lingjiang in again before walking toward Wuzhi.
“What kind of fruit is it?” Yin Wu accepted several from Wuzhi.
Wuzhi said, “Just ordinary fruit. Not bad for easing thirst. Is My Lord better?”
“Mm. At least the fever is gone.” The fruit was not big, and the pit was small. Yin Wu could eat one in two bites. It was not very sweet, but not exactly sour either. “Is there any problem with this place?”
Wuzhi lifted his eyes and looked around. “Not for now. Why?”
Yin Wu seemed only to ask casually. “Nothing. I cannot sense it, so I am a little worried.”
Then she suddenly changed the subject. Her expression grew grave, and it also held the curiosity that belonged to her nature. Her foot lifted lightly. “The soul bones are buried beneath Beiluan Mountain. Are they here?”
Yin Wu had thought for a long time. She had not asked Li Lingjiang, afraid of making her suspicious. This place was too old, and Yin Wu truly could not remember. If she made too much movement, she would draw attention instead.
Wuzhi was not someone easy to fool. He asked warily, “Should you not be the clearest on that? You came to My Lord’s side without doing this preparation?”
Her reaction was open. She looked at Wuzhi with some oddness. “How would the books say the exact location? And my lord, you should know that My Lord and Lord Ling Xin are both very worried about this.”
Wuzhi laughed very softly. “You are an immortal.”
Yin Wu tilted her head. “And my lord is a beast.”
“Little immortal, it is right here. But do not go guessing wildly. Instead of asking me, you should ask My Lord. The soul bones were sealed by the Sovereign back then. The Demon Realm has guarded them for so many years. If even a small abnormality appears, it will be noticed at once.” Wuzhi raised a finger and wagged it. His eyes were clearly full of sly amusement.
Yin Wu’s eyes were clear, without the slightest change. She obediently nodded. “Thank you for the teaching, my lord. Yin Wu will remember.”
Wuzhi did not answer. He only lifted his chin toward the space behind her. Yin Wu heard the sound of cloth rubbing and suddenly turned. She saw Li Lingjiang half supporting her upper body. Loose hair covered half her face. The only eye visible held a coldness. Yin Wu quickly came back to herself and glanced from the corner of her eye at the butterfly, who was enjoying the trouble and quickly fleeing.
Cunning old thing.
Yin Wu took a deep breath and quickly adjusted her mood. She had not known when Li Lingjiang woke. My Lord’s mind was truly hard to guess. Yin Wu had dropped her guard for only a moment, and Wuzhi had found a gap.
But it did not matter.
“My Lord, are you feeling better?” Yin Wu showed no panic and walked over steadily.
The firelight was not bright. Its faint shaking reflected in Li Lingjiang’s eyes. Her beast ears drooped, almost pressed together. They showed her true reaction much more clearly than her face did. Right now, she did not want to speak with Yin Wu.
After falling asleep, fragments kept flashing through her dreams. She could not touch or catch them, and unease grew in her heart. In only a short while, she had startled awake many times. Because of this, she could not enter deep sleep at all. She knew clearly that Yin Wu had been beside her the whole time.
When Wuzhi arrived, Li Lingjiang’s mind had already begun waking. Unfortunately, her whole body was heavy, so she could not react right away. Yin Wu seemed not to have noticed that she had woken.
Many soul bones were buried beneath Beiluan Mountain. Most of them belonged to immortals who had fallen into demons. After being slaughtered, they were all thrown onto No-Return Mountain. According to rumor, No-Return Mountain’s hostile energy had been too heavy back then, and the Demon Realm had also been deeply affected. It was the Sovereign alone who buried them all under Beiluan Mountain and sealed them away. For thousands of years, nothing had changed.
There was also a rumor that the Sovereign had once left a blood bead formed from her own blood inside Beiluan Mountain, using the resentment here to nourish it. Many people had once been tempted, but most were killed before they could do anything. Over time, this became something people tried not to mention. No one dared investigate recklessly, and no one dared seize what the Sovereign had left behind.
Li Lingjiang’s fingers curled slightly. She sensed Yin Wu’s steps drawing closer. Unwillingly, she lifted her head, glanced at Yin Wu, then quickly looked away. She shrank inward a little. “Much better.”
Yin Wu’s steps stopped. She instantly looked wronged. Standing in place and twisting her fingers, she called timidly, “My Lord, are you unhappy?”
“Why would I be unhappy?” Li Lingjiang asked back.
Yin Wu explained, “Because I mentioned the soul bones and asked about the exact location. I know I should not have mentioned it, and I absolutely will not touch them.”
Li Lingjiang still looked distant. “I know.”
“I will not!” Yin Wu stressed again. She strode over and crouched in front of Li Lingjiang, forcing them to look at each other. In only a few moments, her eyes had reddened. “I am just worried about you. You hurried to meet Lord Ling Xin because you wanted to check the situation, did you not?”
“Your body also began getting worse at that time, right? I was wondering whether it had something to do with the soul bones. This place always feels much more oppressive to me. And I thought you must have made preparations, leaving Little Black in this place. It is not hard to connect that with something beneath this location.”
Yin Wu choked up. She carefully looked at Li Lingjiang again, seeming much more pitiful. She tried hard to hold back her tears. “I still have to take care of you. How could I lose my mind?”
Li Lingjiang quietly listened to her speak, and no one could tell what she felt. After a few silent seconds, she drew the outer cloak tighter around herself and said softly, “Are you made of water?”
Both of them fell quiet. Only Yin Wu’s broken sobs remained. She wiped away her tears and shook her head. “I am not. Next time, I definitely will not cry.”
Li Lingjiang ignored her and leaned against the stone wall with her eyes closed. She had not waited long when she felt the young immortal slow her breathing, and then something cool appeared in her hand.
She opened her eyes and happened to see Yin Wu’s hand before it could fully withdraw. The young immortal awkwardly stepped back. Her nose was red, and her body rose and fell with each breath. Her eyes held a cleanness Li Lingjiang rarely saw.
That was also why Li Lingjiang had always tolerated Yin Wu so much.
But she did not want to indulge her, and she could not let herself soften again.
“You eat it.” Li Lingjiang’s tone had still changed. Hearing it, Yin Wu lowered her head.
Yin Wu’s voice was muffled. “My Lord will not try it?”
Li Lingjiang picked it up and studied it for a while. There was nothing special about it. She placed the fruit aside. “I cannot taste anything anymore. It is like chewing wax. It is better not to try.”
As soon as she finished, Yin Wu held her breath and walked over. She grabbed the fruit and ate it in two or three bites, speaking unclearly, “This is too sour. It is not good. In the future, I will specially make delicious things for you.”
