They did not move quickly. Only after everyone had stepped onto the stairs did they begin climbing. Even though part of the pressure was being shared for them, some people still could not bear it and dropped to their knees. They needed several others to support them before they could keep moving, so their speed slowed a great deal.
Feng Luan turned back to look at the dense crowd, then estimated the distance above. The path ahead twisted and bent. Fortunately, the higher they climbed, the lighter the pressure would become. Several times, he saw Ling Xin try to speak, only for Li Lingjiang to raise a hand and stop him. For a moment, Feng Luan felt she looked more like a god than he did.
In truth, with Li Lingjiang’s status and reputation, she could be called a god. But demons had been criticized for too many years. During her rule, she had finally changed some of those fixed ideas. It was only a pity that her once excellent cultivation had faded away so silently.
“My Lord.” Feng Luan moved nimbly aside to avoid Wuzhi. He was on the same step as Ling Xin, shoulder to shoulder. With one light nudge, he squeezed the person beside him down a step.
His voice was very soft, flowing only between them. The others could not follow them too closely.
Li Lingjiang finally stopped. She naturally wiped the sweat that had reached her jaw and waved her hand casually through the air, leaving no trace behind. The air was not hot, but cold sweat covered her body. They had been walking for some time, and their progress was not good. After a little farther, they would only just reach the first bend. The long pressure had already numbed her.
Beiluan Mountain was merciful to her.
“What is it?”
Feng Luan patted Ling Xin as a kind of comfort. “Let him take your place. I fear your body-”
He left no room in his words, though everyone understood the meaning of what he did not finish.
Li Lingjiang did not look surprised. She silently sighed. It did not seem like regret. After a few quiet seconds, she said, “Mm.”
Ling Xin froze. Uncertain, he asked again, “My Lord, you are willing?”
Her hands hung at her sides, loose as if she could not lift any strength. She tilted her head slightly and said no more. “Go.”
Ling Xin hesitated, then smoothly stepped up and walked at the front. Wuzhi and Feng Luan also took the chance to move Li Lingjiang behind them.
Wuzhi looked back and curved his lips. “My Lord, rest for a while.”
“Mm.” Li Lingjiang answered lowly again. Her body suddenly relaxed, and an uncommon laziness filled her whole person. Her spine seemed to bend down a little. She stayed silent, her voice hoarse with weariness. She reached out to touch the cold cliff wall beside her and paused for a few seconds.
The stone steps were formed along the edge. With one careless step, someone might fall. A few people looked down curiously. The distance was not actually that high, but layers of mist made it seem mysterious and bottomless.
“We have not climbed that high, so why does it feel so deep?” someone said, timidly clutching their chest.
“Then stop looking down. You are already afraid of climbing up. Do you want to scare your legs soft?” someone mocked.
The first person glared back, unwilling to lose. “Do not talk about me. Who was the one who could not even walk at first and knelt on the ground like that?”
“Cut the nonsense. If you want to say something, say it openly!”
Seeing the air between the two grow more tense, Tang Wusuo quickly grabbed one of them and tried to persuade them kindly. “All right, all right. It has only been a few days, and you are already fighting like this. Do not destroy yourselves before we even find the magic artifact.”
“Tang Wusuo, stay out of it. You spend all day holding a few copper coins and muttering about fortunes. You sound like a fraud.”
Tang Wusuo, attacked for no reason, curled his lip. He could not be bothered to argue with them. Earlier, when Yin Wu had asked him for copper coins, he naturally had not refused and had quickly found a few to give her. Seeing that she was in a good mood, he knew she had found something to look after.
Yin Wu had no interest in their arguing. She took out a length of red string and threaded several copper coins together. To keep them clean, she even specially had Little Black roast them with fire.
She did not hide her movements from Qi San. He warily stared at the red string in her hand, uncertain. “You are not using-”
Yin Wu did not care. “No, this is my own. It has no magic. Look.”
Her method was simple, but the charm looked rather nice when lifted. To prove it, she even shook it on purpose. “See? Ordinary.”
Qi San saw nothing unusual and finally put down his suspicion. “I suppose you would not use that red thread.”
Yin Wu’s gaze shifted, but she did not answer. Out of habit, she searched for Li Lingjiang’s figure. Through the crowd, she saw Li Lingjiang’s movements. Her mind steadied. Then, as if noticing something, she frowned. After thinking for a moment, she suddenly said, “Lord Qi San, I will leave the rear to you.”
“What-”
Before Qi San could ask, Yin Wu’s figure had vanished. She flung out the red rope and leaped into the air. Her toes touched the cliff face. With a snap, the red rope struck up tiny bits of stone. She flipped again and landed steadily beside Li Lingjiang.
In an instant, she had passed several people and arrived at Li Lingjiang’s side, bringing a cool breeze with her.
Yin Wu lifted the copper coins before Li Lingjiang’s eyes. She raised a smile, the dimples in her cheeks especially clear. Her face looked even more bright and beautiful. She looked at Li Lingjiang and softly said, “My Lord.”
“I came to keep you company!”
