Yin Wu tilted her head halfway up to look at the woman. Thin lips, peach-blossom eyes, and a high, straight nose. Even in this situation, she had lightly applied makeup. Every movement of her brows and eyes carried charm. Even wearing the Immortal-Entering Sect’s uniform, she had tugged it down a little.
With interest, Yin Wu calculated with her fingertips and raised a brow. A woman from the pleasure houses.
Yin Wu waved her sleeve. She turned her head to observe Li Lingjiang’s attitude. Seeing that Li Lingjiang looked tired, she settled down.
“My name is Bai Zhi. I would like to form a connection with Fellow Cultivator Li.” Bai Zhi bent slightly, clearly lowering her posture. She lifted her eyes a little and pressed her lips into a faint smile.
Li Lingjiang swept a glance over her and withdrew her gaze. She spoke plainly. “What do you want?”
Bai Zhi’s smile froze for a few seconds, then became much more natural. She straightened and moved a little closer to Li Lingjiang. “Fellow Cultivator Li, if you say it like that, how am I supposed to answer?”
She brushed aside the loose hair before her jaw and crouched on one knee. “I did come with a purpose. I want to seek protection here.”
Li Lingjiang did not turn her eyes. Her fingertips rubbed together. “This is only the first day. Why be so anxious?”
Bai Zhi hooked her lips. Her brows and eyes lifted. “How can you say that? I do not have much cultivation. You also know how dangerous No-Return Mountain is. I was forced by circumstances. And there is something you do not know…”
Her final note lifted, and her hand wanted to land on Li Lingjiang. Yin Wu reacted quickly and grabbed it. Her face darkened, and she used strength. Bai Zhi struggled in pain.
Yin Wu gave a short laugh and lowered her voice. “Do disciples of the Immortal-Entering Sect not wear their clothes properly? I did not want to poke at your sore spot, but looking at you now, you seem to treat it as a skill. Do not use your client-serving tricks on us.”
Her eyes narrowed slightly, faintly revealing some deathly energy. Bai Zhi met her gaze without preparation, and her pupils trembled in shock.
When Yin Wu let go, Bai Zhi rubbed her aching wrist and calmly gathered her collar. Looking at Li Lingjiang, she showed the tip of her tongue and licked her lips. “Yes. I was indeed from a brothel before. But things are different now. I redeemed myself with my own money. I did not steal or rob. Why can I not rely on my own skills?”
Her gaze grew much more suggestive. “I took both men and women as clients. Since this world gave me this fate, paying the price was natural. I am greedy for money. This was the fastest way. I still want to live a little longer.”
Li Lingjiang lifted her eyelids. Her eyes were like a pool of dead water hiding killing intent. “What were you about to say just now?”
Bai Zhi put away some of her impropriety and half covered her mouth. “Why did some of us come here? It was not for that magic artifact. It is because anyone who can get out alive will receive a reward. If you can keep me safe, I will surely thank you heavily.”
“A reward?” Li Lingjiang murmured. Then she suddenly laughed softly. “I do not lack money.”
She moved slightly, sweeping the dark Life-Death River from the corner of her eye. “But you cannot say such words carelessly. You do have courage.”
Bai Zhi followed her words and did not care much. “Living requires these things. Fellow Cultivator Li, are you truly unwilling to consider it? I had not even said anything before you blocked me in one breath.”
Li Lingjiang breathed out. Her speaking speed was unhurried. “You should have seen that I am injured. Of all the people here, why choose me?”
“Was I not happy the moment I first saw you?” Bai Zhi did not act coy. “I like looking at people’s appearances. You are beautiful, and you are the type I like.”
Li Lingjiang gave a soft “Mm.” “Find someone else.”
Bai Zhi frowned. Seeing that Li Lingjiang would not be moved by oil or salt, a sly look flashed in her eyes. “Since that is the case, I will not be tactless. I can take things up and put them down. Actually, I have another purpose. Thank you for helping me just now, Fellow Cultivator Li. Otherwise, my life might have hung by a thread. I know some medical principles. If you do not mind, could I follow by your side and help a little?”
Yin Wu, whose thoughts had not been fully on their conversation, suddenly gathered them. She instantly clenched Li Lingjiang’s sleeve and turned to look at her.
Li Lingjiang noticed the movement. When she turned her head, she met a pair of eyes slowly filling with mist, made especially clear by the light. With one glance, she understood what Yin Wu meant. She did not want Li Lingjiang to accept Bai Zhi.
But how could Li Lingjiang?
One Yin Wu was already enough. In the days she did not have long left, having someone beside her counted as company. Any more than that, and she would not be able to handle it.
Before Li Lingjiang could speak, Yin Wu took a deep breath. Her expression was no longer like before. Her face gained a little fierceness, and her tone grew heavier. “Why did you not use this excuse from the start?”
Bai Zhi spread her hands. “At the start, you saw through my most important purpose. I had no time to say it.”
Yin Wu: “…”
“But I am sincere.” Bai Zhi drew in her expression and bowed seriously and respectfully to Li Lingjiang. “Thank you.”
Li Lingjiang looked sideways at the young immortal’s puffed-up appearance. She reached out and patted the back of Yin Wu’s hand, then withdrew before Yin Wu could hold it back. She looked calmly at the young immortal for several seconds. Yin Wu clearly froze, then joyfully withdrew her little movement.
Li Lingjiang tucked her sleeve inward. A small bit of her fingertip showed, and the gauze stood out clearly. “Saving you was only a small effort. I believe anyone would have done it. You do not need to keep it in your heart.”
Li Lingjiang lowered her brows and eyes. “If you had not brought it up, I would not have recognized you.”
Yin Wu took the chance to hum.
Li Lingjiang paused, then laughed helplessly under her breath. “For me, taking you along would not be difficult, but right now, my strength is not equal to my wishes. Some kindnesses can pass once they pass. There is no need to take them too much to heart. You are a good girl. I can tell.”
Bai Zhi blinked. She was silent for a few seconds before saying, “All right. But it has been a long time since anyone called me a good girl. My background makes people hate me. Everyone avoids me. I always need some kind of backer. If you had not said that, I would have thought you despised my origins.”
Li Lingjiang did not speak for a moment. The few people were neither stiff nor relaxed. Her gaze gained some gentleness. She lifted her eyes and faced Bai Zhi directly.
“Even a rotting flower that the world dislikes is still beautiful.”
“Your appearance is not bad, and you know what you want. Why care about those things?”
Bai Zhi’s body straightened. She licked her dry lips and instinctively looked toward Yin Wu, who had not spoken. The young immortal tilted her head and spread her hands flat. “See?”
Bai Zhi’s breath stopped for a few seconds. Suddenly, her eyes curved with a smile until they were like crescent moons. She nodded. “You are right. If possible, I truly want to become friends with you two.”
Yin Wu propped her chin and saw that this human could open her heart quite a bit because of one sentence. For some reason, interest rose in her. Without showing it, she leaned half a fraction closer to Li Lingjiang and said with a stern face, “Did you not also say you wanted to repay kindness?”
Bai Zhi raised her brow bone. “I can repay kindness slowly. If there is time, why not let me invite you to my hometown for a visit?”
It was very easy for a person to be captured by one sentence.
Yin Wu muttered quietly to Li Lingjiang. Li Lingjiang’s eyes had no ripple. She only rubbed her wrist. “As you like.”
Once the young immortal received permission, she immediately patted the place beside her. “I look at you and feel some affinity too. But if you really try to wedge yourself in, I will make sure this flower of yours cannot get back up.”
She was like a child who had not grown up, freely switching emotions.
Bai Zhi did not refuse. She sat over, not too close. Before she could speak, she heard Yin Wu staring at her face in confusion and drawing a light breath.
“Your face does not seem to belong to you.”
