Luo Tangtang fled frantically, unaware of her surroundings, her only thought to escape.
Until suddenly, someone grabbed the scruff of her neck, dangling her in mid-air.
Luo Tangtang: Huh? She tried to move her limbs, but her body immediately lost its balance, wobbling precariously.
“Meow!” she cried.
“What an ugly… cat?”
It was a woman’s voice, laced with curiosity. She even gently poked Luo Tangtang’s head with her index finger.
At that moment, Luo Tangtang hung frozen in mid-air, completely still. Her round cat eyes were wide with shock, her body as stiff as a board.
Senior Sister… Her eyes instantly welled up.
“You were running so fast just now.” The woman held her by the front paws, lifting her. Her phoenix eyes narrowed slightly, as if in thought. The girl looked about fifteen or sixteen, dressed in red, with a vermilion mark between her brows. Her brilliant golden eyes shimmered, lively and otherworldly.
That face… it was unmistakably Yun Shayi.
Large tears immediately began to fall, impossible to stop. Luo Tangtang’s nose stung.
Yun Shayi seemed a little flustered. Her grip loosened, and half of Luo Tangtang’s body tilted. The hand holding her trembled slightly, as if unsure how much pressure to apply to avoid hurting the scrawny little thing.
“Why are you crying?” A teardrop landed on Yun Shayi’s hand. Her eyebrow twitched slightly as she stared at Luo Tangtang.
Luo Tangtang’s vision was a blur. Her eyes hadn’t healed properly for so long; although she could see, everything was hazy and unclear.
But now, for some reason, she could clearly sense Yun Shayi’s dislike for her. Her tears flowed even more fiercely, yet she feared Yun Shayi would truly despise her and toss her aside.
After a moment’s thought, she used her paw to wipe away the tears that had fallen onto Yun Shayi’s hand.
“Enough, stop wiping. You’re making it dirtier,” Yun Shayi said, her voice tinged with frustration.
“How can the Supreme Immortal Sect have a cat as ugly as you?”
Those familiar words echoed once more.
Luo Tangtang’s mouth drooped uncontrollably.
“Well, I’m good-looking, so you can stick with me. We’ll complement each other,” Yun Shayi added.
And so, Luo Tangtang was carried all the way back, dangling.
“You’re so dirty.”
But I used several cleaning spells, didn’t I? Luo Tangtang thought, feeling upset.
“You always seem to have a strange smell.” Holding Luo Tangtang by the scruff of her neck, Yun Shayi brought her close for a sniff, then quickly held her at arm’s length again, her face etched with distaste.
I told you I used cleaning spells! You must be smelling things wrong, Luo Tangtang thought, on the verge of tears again.
Otherwise, it must be that Senior Sister isn’t very good at cleaning spells.
She tried to get closer to her Senior Sister on the way, but every time she did, she was pushed further away with obvious distaste.
They finally arrived at Yun Shayi’s dwelling. It wasn’t much to look at, rather bare in fact. Inside a cave, there was only a stone bed and a meditation cushion, nothing else.
“Let’s give you a bath,” Yun Shayi muttered to herself.
With that, she produced a wooden basin as if by magic.
Luo Tangtang: “…”
Am I really that dirty?
Yun Shayi smiled and unceremoniously plopped Luo Tangtang into the basin. Icy water drenched her fur, and Luo Tangtang instantly began to shiver, letting out weak whimpers.
Yun Shayi was quite careless; it didn’t even occur to her to warm the water. She just started scrubbing the little kitten.
“My name is Yun Shayi. What’s yours?” she suddenly asked.
“You’re going to live with me from now on. I can’t just keep calling you ‘little kitty,’ can I?” At this thought, she paused her scrubbing, seemingly lost in deep thought.
What’s my name? Luo Tangtang faltered. She had always been Luo Tangtang.
“How about Little Pretty? Since you’re so ugly.”
Yun Shayi said suddenly, a lightbulb seemingly going off in her head.
“Meow!” Luo Tangtang struggled violently. She didn’t want that name; it was too embarrassing!
“You don’t like it?” Yun Shayi asked, surprised by Luo Tangtang’s fierce struggles.
“Then how about Qingcheng? That sounds more meaningful.”
Luo Tangtang’s violent struggles abruptly ceased.
“You want that one?” Yun Shayi prodded the now listless kitten.
“Pretty, or Qingcheng?”
“Qingcheng?”
Luo Tangtang remained motionless.
“Then—!” Yun Shayi raised an eyebrow and suddenly grinned.
“Pretty?”
Luo Tangtang finally moved. She slowly extended a paw and placed it on Yun Shayi’s hand.
“Alright.” Yun Shayi’s eyes curved into crescents as she smiled. “Little Pretty it is, then.”
Luo Tangtang: “…”
‘System, System, where are you? Come out! Come out, I say!’
‘You had the guts to bring me here, so you better explain yourself! Stop playing dead!’
‘Come out!’
Luo Tangtang was going frantic. Senior Sister isn’t like this!
But Yun Shayi clearly hadn’t noticed Luo Tangtang’s inner upset. She earnestly resumed scrubbing her.
All the while, she didn’t forget to continue her comments: “Your fur is so uneven; it’s obvious you’re malnourished. Don’t worry, stick with me. I promise to fatten you up until you’re plump and your fur is glossy and smooth.”
“Tsk, tsk, how did your tail get so bald?”
“Is it her breed? So strange,” Yun Shayi mumbled.
‘System, come out!’
Yun Shayi talked on and on at Luo Tangtang, while Luo Tangtang screamed into the emptiness in her mind. Soon, Luo Tangtang felt like her head was about to explode.
“Let me take you to get something to eat.”
After a little while, Yun Shayi was finally satisfied. She took a clean white cotton cloth and thoroughly dried Luo Tangtang. Then, worried she might catch a cold, she used her spiritual energy to dry her fur completely.
“There, now you’re a clean ugly kitty, Little Pretty.”
Luo Tangtang’s lifeless eyes finally lifted. Looking at the familiar face before her, her nose stung again.
“Hey, maybe I should call you Little Crybaby instead. Oh well.” Yun Shayi said with some frustration, seeing her on the verge of tears.
“Let’s go! I’ll treat you to a feast.”
As she spoke, Luo Tangtang felt a rush of wind. The next moment, her vision shifted, and a mountain peak appeared before her.
Spirit Beast Peak? Luo Tangtang guessed, relying on her memory.
“This is the Supreme Immortal Sect’s Spirit Beast Peak. There are many spirit beasts here.” Indeed, Yun Shayi explained in the next moment.
She added with a gentle smile, “You can make friends here.”
Luo Tangtang felt a little pleased with herself. Her memory wasn’t so bad after all.
But weren’t we supposed to eat? What are we doing here? Are we skipping food and going straight to making friends?
Luo Tangtang’s pointed ears twitched and shot up. A bad feeling grew inside her.
“I’m taking you to get some milk.”
Yun Shayi’s words struck her like a lightning bolt, leaving her completely shocked.
“Dr-drink milk?” Luo Tangtang’s little paws, resting on Yun Shayi’s arm, instantly slipped. She nearly fell, but Yun Shayi’s quick movements saved her, catching her.
“Don’t worry, I promise to find a suitable wet nurse for you, one from a suitable breed,” Yun Shayi said comfortingly, gently patting her small head.
Run! I have to run! Horror filled Luo Tangtang’s eyes.
But Yun Shayi seemed to have expected this. Her hands held Luo Tangtang firmly, making it impossible for her to move.
“Little milk-drinker, you need to be good. Otherwise, you won’t grow big, and poor development is no good.”
Yun Shayi looked at her as if she were an unknowing child, her eyes filled with a kind look that made Luo Tangtang’s skin crawl.
“Meow, meow!”
I’m already grown! This is just my size! I don’t need to drink milk!
She tried very hard to explain, but Yun Shayi… couldn’t understand cat.
“You must be starving. I’ll take you to eat right now.”
Wait… wait a minute! I’m not hungry!
No matter how much Luo Tangtang protested, all that came out were pitiful meows. And she couldn’t just transform into her human form right now.
After some wandering, Yun Shayi finally stopped before an enclosure with a sign. Luo Tangtang couldn’t quite make out the words written high on it before Yun Shayi gently pushed open the gate.
Inside was a Cotton Spirit Sheep. Its wool was extremely tough and could be made into magical robes with strong defensive properties. Moreover, they were known for their gentle temperament.
“You’re the one,” Yun Shayi said with a smile.
“Look at its fleece—so smooth and thick! Little Pretty, if you drink its milk, it’ll surely cure your fur loss.”
I don’t want it! I refuse! Luo Tangtang didn’t give up, struggling violently.
It was a ewe, and underneath her, several newborn lambs with their eyes still closed were suckling.
How could I have the nerve to steal their milk?
“Go on, Pretty, quickly now.” Yun Shayi put Luo Tangtang on the ground. Luo Tangtang tried to back away, but Yun Shayi pushed her forward.
“Hurry up, go for it! Or you won’t get to eat!” Yun Shayi, frustrated by her reluctance, directly tossed Luo Tangtang towards the sheep.
Luo Tangtang tumbled a few times in mid-air and landed right on the Cotton Spirit Sheep’s soft belly.
Lying there, she looked up and met the dark eyes of the Cotton Spirit Sheep. Then, she saw it snort a puff of warm air from its nostrils.
Then, a hoof descended, and Luo Tangtang was kicked aside.
Yun Shayi quickly caught her, her voice tinged with guilt. “Oops, I thought Cotton Spirit Sheep were supposed to be gentle? Why did it kick?”
Luo Tangtang wanted to cry but had no tears left.
“Well, that didn’t work. Little Pretty, why don’t you try again? You can’t skip your meal,” Yun Shayi suggested.
Luo Tangtang immediately began to wail pitifully. Yun Shayi froze.
Luo Tangtang’s cries paused for a moment, then started again with even greater misery. She even started rolling around on the ground.
“Hey, stop crying now.” Seeing Luo Tangtang’s wails grow louder and more pitiful, Yun Shayi felt rather helpless. She gently reached out and rubbed her tiny belly.
“We snuck in here, you know. It’ll be terrible if we get caught.”
“Forget it. If you won’t do it, I will.” Yun Shayi glanced at the Cotton Spirit Sheep lying in the corner, her eyes pausing for a moment.
…
Luo Tangtang lay on Yun Shayi’s shoulder, observing the hoof print on the hem of Yun Shayi’s robe and the white tufts of wool in her hair. The corner of Luo Tangtang’s mouth twitched.
She didn’t understand why Yun Shayi was so determined on feeding her sheep’s milk. Other foods were available, but Yun Shayi seemed to have gotten fixated on the Cotton Spirit Sheep, going to great effort to obtain the milk.
Clang.
“Drink up.” Yun Shayi poured the sheep’s milk into a bowl and then placed it in front of Luo Tangtang.
“Drink every last drop,” Yun Shayi added.
