The two of them paired up, intending to check out the rock on the west side of Wugou Mountain.
Jiang Xidai walked in front, with Yan Huirou unknowingly falling behind, her steps following in her shadow.
In the past, Jiang Xidai never liked to show her back to anyone.
She slowed her pace slightly, her brow furrowing as she realized she seemed to have unintentionally broken her own habit.
But on closer inspection, although Yan Huirou had some cultivation, in front of Jiang Xidai she was no more of a threat than a mayfly trying to shake a tree. Besides, I was the one who taught her swordplay. What is there to worry about?
So Jiang Xidai put it out of her mind.
As the two climbed higher, the white mist settled like snow, and the mountain came into clear view, as if rising from the water.
“There really is a giant rock there.” Yan Huirou stood on her toes and peered forward.
It didn’t look special.
When they got closer, Jiang Xidai knocked on the rock. The sound was dull and muffled; it wasn’t hollow.
“Come up here and see if there’s anything unusual.”
Just as Yan Huirou took a step toward it, she stepped on something.
Her body tilted and she began to slide down.
A sense of weightlessness hit them both at the same time.
A deafening rumble echoed in their ears as dust billowed up.
Something fell, cracking the ground. Jiang Xidai dodged to the side, but seeing that Yan Huirou was a step too slow to react, she didn’t hesitate. Amidst the violent shaking, she grabbed the girl’s sash, and they fell into an embrace as they turned.
They clung to each other as they tumbled, getting stuck in a crevice that had suddenly split open in the mountainside.
Amidst her own shallow breaths, Yan Huirou heard another deafening crash from outside.
Her eyes widened slightly as she watched the last sliver of light get completely swallowed by the dust.
How did we get in here?
It was as if the mountain had cracked open its mouth and swallowed them both.
The crevice was now blocked by a fallen rock.
It was pitch-black.
In the darkness, Yan Huirou couldn’t see Jiang Xidai’s face.
But they were pressed tightly together, wedged so perfectly that neither knew what position the other was in.
She reached out a hand, probing into the darkness, and unexpectedly touched something warm and soft. Surprised, Yan Huirou wondered what part of the skin it was and cautiously poked it with her thumb. “…Sect Master Jiang?”
A sharp, quiet gasp sounded by her ear. A moment later, Yan Huirou’s wrist was seized, and another hand clamped onto the side of her face, squeezing with some force.
“Insolent.”
“Do you know where you’re poking?” The woman’s voice was icy. “If you don’t want this hand, you should just say so. Hm?”
Is this acceptable?
In this dark crevice, the female lead of this novel is pressed perfectly against my body, and she even pokes a finger right on my chest, not once, but twice, just to be sure.
Is this acceptable?
This is completely unacceptable. Jiang Xidai thought to herself.
She could feel that the flesh of Yan Huirou’s cheek in her hand was delicate and soft. She didn’t know if it was due to poor blood circulation, but it was also growing slightly hot.
“I’m sorry. I can’t see clearly, I didn’t mean to be improper.” Yan Huirou’s voice was faint. “Right, could you… let go of my face?”
The flesh of her cheek ached as it was given a retaliatory squeeze before finally being released.
“This is a stone cavity inside.”
Jiang Xidai had wanted to glare at her, but then she remembered that with Yan Huirou’s level of cultivation, she was as good as blind without light.
A glare would be wasted.
So she averted her gaze and ignored her.
She listened intently for a moment.
“I can hear the sound of dripping water inside.”
Hearing that, Yan Huirou noticed that Jiang Xidai’s voice echoed around them, sounding even more ethereal than usual. The space must be larger than this narrow crack; it should be more spacious inside.
“You go out first. Squeeze out to the left,” Jiang Xidai commanded her.
These days, even mountains could open their mouths and swallow people. Who knew what kind of demons, monsters, or strange mechanisms were hiding in this cave.
Jiang Xidai had no desire to suffer herself, so she planned to send out the little female lead to scout the path first.
With Yan Huirou’s luck, nothing bad would happen.
Yan Huirou shifted slightly, following her order to struggle out of the narrow stone crevice.
But the two of them were wedged in far too tightly.
She didn’t want to use too much force, but the crevice was so narrow—it was impossible without a significant effort.
With one strong push.
Before Jiang Xidai could react, she felt her clothes moving along with Yan Huirou. A sense of foreboding hit her. She subconsciously grabbed at her collar, and the next moment, the subtle sound of tearing silk echoed between them.
Yan Huirou froze. “…”
The next moment, she felt a sharp kick to her leg, and she was practically thrown out.
Fortunately, from her daily practice of the Emotion Burning Art, she had a sliver of cultivation. Yan Huirou rolled on the ground. It wasn’t too painful, and at least the Sect Master hadn’t kicked her to death.
Similar muffled grunts sounded one after another.
After throwing Yan Huirou out, Jiang Xidai wordlessly pressed the side of her own leg, rubbing a specific spot. Only then did she manage to compose herself and squeeze out.
She clutched her clothes. Her collar was torn, revealing half of her fragrant shoulder and collarbone, but thankfully the damage wasn’t worse, and it was just hanging loosely for now.
“Follow the sound of the water. Don’t delay any longer.” Jiang Xidai frowned. “…I really hate this pitch-black darkness.”
“Me too.” Yan Huirou also felt very uncomfortable. She preferred the light. On this point, the two of them were surprisingly in agreement.
“…Um… right, kicking people with your leg is really too uncivilized.”
Hearing the complaint in her voice, Jiang Xidai’s lips curled. “Strange. I’m already the world’s number one demoness. Why would I need to be so civilized?”
“A noble person is virtuous even when alone,” Yan Huirou said softly. “It has nothing to do with what others think.”
“‘Virtuous’?” The woman repeated, puzzled for a moment before her tone turned dismissive. “What nonsense is that? Doesn’t sound like a very good person.”
“…”
Yan Huirou’s gentle persuasion was truly like water flowing into a great river, disappearing without a single trace.
Choked by her response, Yan Huirou belatedly remembered that while the Shasheng Sect had a scripture repository, it only contained necessary cultivation techniques and no other books.
One could also tell from the Sect Master’s daily habits. Even when she was bored to death, she would rather admire her jewelry in the mirror or fiddle with her bracelets than read even a single page of a leisure book.
For some reason, when Yan Huirou thought of this, she smiled. She found Sect Master Jiang’s willfulness to be about fifty percent cute. No wonder she could never win an argument with her.
But that sentence…
Yan Huirou couldn’t quite remember where she had read it herself. She always felt she had forgotten many things. When she closed her eyes, she couldn’t see her past life, only some blurry images, and then the deep, dark Cave Prison.
The cave was damp, and the further in they went, the more slippery the ground became.
Afraid of stepping on something again, Yan Huirou instinctively reached out a hand and loosely took hold of Jiang Xidai’s sleeve.
For once, Jiang Xidai didn’t shake her off. But to prevent Yan Huirou from pulling her clothes off again, she simply grabbed her wrist.
Yan Huirou raised her other hand, touching the stone wall beside her. It was uneven but felt surprisingly smooth and cool to the touch.
In this way, they lightly supported each other and followed the sound of the water.
After an unknown amount of time, the sound of water grew louder, deafening, its rumbling echo filling the narrow cave.
A sliver of light appeared ahead. At first, it was indistinct, like a flame flickering in the wind.
The wet stones were very slippery, and there was a constant risk of falling, so they couldn’t afford to be distracted while walking.
Neither of them spoke. Their linked hands were the only warmth in the damp, cold cave, a connection that felt exceptionally clear.
“What is this?”
The excessively bright light made Jiang Xidai squint. She raised a sleeve to shield her eyes, lowering it only when she had adjusted.
It was a huge cavern with a waterfall. Large and small stalagmites stood within, growing from the ground like spring bamboo shoots, reaching for the sky. It was a magnificent sight. White mist swirled among them, creating a hazy, picturesque scene like a landscape painting.
The largest stalagmite was covered in sword marks. It stood in a large pool of water in the center of the cavern. The water in the pool rippled without any wind, which was very strange.
“It’s you—”
The pool of water abruptly split open, forming a mouth. The waves shot up a foot high.
What kind of evil thing is this.
In a flash, Jiang Xidai’s embroidered umbrella was already open, blocking the splashing waves. She gripped the handle, her eyes slightly lowered, scanning slowly from left to right. Her guard was at its highest, ready to draw her sword at any moment.
“You’ve come—”
“The fated one, destined by heaven—”
The giant mouth formed of water constantly wriggled, seeming to smile happily. Its lips opened and closed, squeezing out a few broken syllables before shooting past the umbrella toward Jiang Xidai. A stream of water reached out in greeting. “Your name is—?”
Jiang Xidai said flatly, “It doesn’t matter who you are. If you live in this world and don’t even recognize me, you have no business being here.”
The stream of water jolted at her cold, arrogant tone and shrank back a little. “Huh?”
The water coalesced into the shape of an eye, which looked her up and down. It gurgled, then perplexedly changed into a strange shape.
Yan Huirou stared at the shape, and a long-forgotten word surfaced in her mind.
Is that, a question mark?
“So who are you?”
“Jiang Xidai.” The woman, perhaps annoyed by its stupidity, answered impatiently.
“So you’re—” The water giggled a few more times. “Never heard of you.”
It morphed into the shape of a hand with five distinct fingers, playfully giving a thumbs-up gesture, before flipping it upside down. It then delivered its evaluation of the woman who made the entire cultivation world tremble in fear:
“Crazy.”
