Having finally gotten Yan Huirou to agree, Jiang Xidai naturally wouldn’t go back on her word.
It didn’t matter if the mission failed. She didn’t care about those few cultivation points; she’d be better off meditating in that time.
The main thing was that she had to go and watch.
To prevent Yan Huirou and Li Xinghe—Yan Huirou was one thing, but especially Li Xinghe—from obtaining too great a fortune.
Judging by the male lead’s hatred for her, which was practically an ocean of blood and vengeance, it was better to just nip him in the bud.
Counting the days, Jiang Xidai and Yan Huirou arrived at Wugou Mountain together.
From the perspective of the Shasheng Sect, which overlooked a range of peaks, this place was at best an insignificant little hill. Jiang Xidai only remembered it because its name had a rather immortal-sounding charm.
Yan Huirou walked through the dense mountain forest, the white mist swirling around the mountain brushing past her face.
She stepped onto a rock and looked back to ask, “Sect Master Jiang, where are we going?”
“Just walk wherever you like.”
Jiang Xidai didn’t know where to go either, but following the female lead was never a mistake. Perhaps if she just wandered around, she’d stumble upon some great fortune falling from the sky.
Yan Huirou was completely confused. “Weren’t you the one who wanted to come?”
“Right. Did that boy not tell you what he was inviting you to see?”
Yan Huirou frowned and thought for a long time.
Seeing her expression turn unusually solemn, Jiang Xidai watched her with a deeper meaning in her eyes, trying to catch any subtle change in her expression.
“I…”
Jiang Xidai also grew serious.
A moment later.
Yan Huirou’s brow relaxed, and she gave Jiang Xidai an apologetic smile. “Sect Master, when he ran into me on the street that day, he seemed to feel an instant connection. He suddenly stopped me and said a lot of things, and I seem to have forgotten some of it… I only remember him stuffing a note into my hand, saying he was grateful for me saving him, and asking if I was willing to come to Wugou Mountain with him.”
“You seem so concerned about it too. Is there something special on Wugou Mountain?” Yan Huirou asked, tilting her head.
“…”
Sect Master Jiang felt a pang of exasperation.
She had always known the female lead lacked ambition, but she hadn’t expected her to be distracted at such a crucial moment.
“Think carefully. What were you doing at the time?” A soft tut escaped Jiang Xidai’s lips as she said with disdain, “So young, yet your memory is worse than an old man’s.”
“I was…” Yan Huirou raised her sleeve to cover a light cough. “Sect Master Jiang, at that moment, I was thinking about what kind of dessert to make for you in the evening.”
“So I bought half a basket of pears.”
“And I felt the pears didn’t look very fresh, so I was trying to haggle for a fairer price. After that, I was planning to go stock up on rock sugar and dates… I was a bit busy and really didn’t have time to listen to what Li Xinghe was saying.”
Jiang Xidai rubbed her brow. She felt she had been thoroughly bested by Yan Huirou.
But when she thought about how delicious her rock sugar and pear dessert was, she couldn’t bring herself to say anything harsh.
Relying on Yan Huirou probably wouldn’t work. It would be better to look for traces of the other one. Just as she was thinking this, Jiang Xidai keenly sensed the presence of strangers drifting towards her on the breeze.
She calmly closed her embroidered umbrella, her gaze shifting behind her.
Just in time.
Speak of the devil.
The male lead was hiking up with a pack on his back and a sword in his hand, his head down as he picked his way through the rocks. He hadn’t noticed the two of them yet.
Jiang Xidai smiled faintly and leaned close to Yan Huirou’s ear, whispering, “Next, you get information out of him. Don’t let him see me. Understood?”
A soft warmth spread through Yan Huirou’s ear as the red-robed figure fluttered up into the air, landing on the very tip of a treetop, only a hint of her blood-red hem visible.
Yan Huirou frowned. The young man who had followed them up the path looked up and saw her.
The female lead and the male lead stared at each other.
Li Xinghe was first startled, then he looked her up and down. Seeing it was indeed Yan Huirou, he said joyfully, “You came after all?”
Yan Huirou silently glanced up at the sky. She saw the scrap of red skirt retract as if it had a life of its own, and through a gap in the dense leaves and branches, Jiang Xidai’s partial face was revealed.
The woman’s lips curved into a smile as she raised a finger to her lips, giving Yan Huirou a look that seemed to be a warning. She looked down on the two of them from her high perch.
Yan Huirou withdrew her gaze and said in her heart, Bad woman.
She gave Li Xinghe a polite nod. “What a coincidence.”
“A great coincidence!” Li Xinghe said. “Miss Yan, did you come here specifically to wait for me? Why did you refuse me before?”
“I was—”
Yan Huirou paused. “I remembered that you had mentioned this place, so I came to have a look on my own in my spare time.”
“That’s strange,” Li Xinghe said. “That demoness was actually willing to let you out?”
Yan Huirou said, “She is not a demoness.”
Li Xinghe laughed dryly. “Hahaha. Let’s not talk about that. Since you and I are so fated to meet, Miss Yan, why don’t you join me?”
Yan Huirou lifted her eyes. Jiang Xidai seemed to be urging her to speak. So she asked, “Of course. I was just wondering, why would you risk lingering near the Shasheng Sect and travel so far to Wugou Mountain?”
“Huh? Didn’t I tell you last time? Speaking of this place, I’ve been dreaming about it often recently. In my dreams, there’s a precious sword, and it needs a fated person. It’s very strange. Some dreams you only have once, but this one comes every single night.”
“It must be the heavens protecting me. There must be a fortune here.” The male lead had been climbing for a while and now took off his sword, leaning against a tree trunk to rest. He pulled a flatbread out of his pocket. “This is high up, you must be tired from climbing. Want some? Want a drink?”
Yan Huirou slowly shook her head. “This mountain isn’t very high. I’m not hungry, and I don’t drink.” Jiang Xidai always made her climb much higher mountains.
“You look like such a delicate girl, don’t try to act tough.” Li Xinghe took a bite of his flatbread and washed it down with a swig of wine from a flask. “Miss Yan, the two of us are truly fated. I’m sure we’ll be able to draw that precious sword. Once I have it—”
He paused, his voice deepening. “I will cultivate diligently, hoping to one day avenge myself.”
“Your sword is only for revenge,” Yan Huirou said. “But when will the cycle of revenge ever end? In this fleeting world, hatred only breeds more killing.”
Li Xinghe said, “You don’t understand. You haven’t experienced that kind of hatred.”
Yan Huirou smiled, not arguing. “I don’t understand?”
Seeing the atmosphere grow a bit solemn, Li Xinghe felt he couldn’t quite figure out the woman before him. Although she spoke gently, she didn’t seem very enthusiastic toward him.
He asked curiously, “Do you also want a divine weapon? What would you do with it? If not for revenge, what else is there?”
Yan Huirou said, “…A deadly weapon isn’t just for slaughter; perhaps it can also protect the ones you love.”
“Hahahahaha.”
The man opposite her burst out laughing. “What kind of man needs you to protect him? Wouldn’t that make him a coward? Since ancient times, beauties have always loved heroes. Seeing as you’re so beautiful, Miss, you can’t possibly like—”
“I won’t,” Yan Huirou interrupted his mockery, straightening her clothes. “Do you know where the precious sword from your dream is?”
“That’s simple. It’s under the big rock on the west side of the summit. Tsk, I’ve dreamed of it many times.”
“…” Yan Huirou said doubtfully, “This dream of yours, are you sure it’s real?”
In the end, it was just a dream.
But it was a question Li Xinghe would likely not be able to answer.
Just as Li Xinghe blurted out the words, a red agate shot down from above with a whistling sound, striking the male lead squarely on the forehead and knocking him unconscious.
The woman’s voice drifted down coolly from above. “Something that could have been found out with a few nice words, and yet you wasted so much time with him. A waste of my time.”
A red robe descended, and Jiang Xidai landed back on the ground. With a wave of her hand, she sent the unconscious Li Xinghe tumbling into a pile of weeds.
With a flick of her sword, Jiang Xidai knocked the Storage Ring from Li Xinghe’s finger. She searched it carefully, checking for any strange magic artifacts. Then, getting too lazy to pick through it, she simply took everything.
Jiang Xidai tossed the now-empty Storage Ring back, but on second thought, the ring looked plain and unremarkable—what if there was something special about it? So she snatched it back mid-air.
Yan Huirou clasped her hands, watching her quietly for a long moment before she finally couldn’t help but ask, “…Are the Shasheng Sect’s finances a bit tight recently?”
To need to loot a fledgling cultivator so thoroughly?
Jiang Xidai said, “Not really.” After she finished her search, she took out a damp silk cloth to wipe her hands, considering if she had missed anything.
Her gaze swept over and saw half a broken flatbread on the ground, and a wine flask standing quietly beside it.
The fortune couldn’t possibly be a flatbread.
So the wine flask landed in her palm. She lifted it by the neck and opened it. A rich, fragrant aroma wafted out; it was a good bottle of wine.
Yan Huirou thought she was going to loot that as well and quickly stopped her. “Sect Master Jiang, that’s been drunk from!”
Jiang Xidai grabbed Yan Huirou’s hand, tilted the flask, and the liquor splashed onto the tips of the grass, darkening a large patch of the stone.
“Relax, I’m not drinking it.”
Jiang Xidai poured the wine on the ground, then tossed the flask aside with a thud. “It hardly compares to the Western Regions wine I have in my cellar. It has a rosy color and a sweet taste. Want to try it?”
“Alright,” Yan Huirou said.
“Didn’t you say you don’t drink?”
“I can learn.”
When Li Xinghe offered her a drink, she only said she didn’t know how. Yet Jiang Xidai found that when she opened her mouth, Yan Huirou became “I can learn.”
Jiang Xidai smiled. This little brat, she thought, is rather interesting.
As she walked past Yan Huirou, she raised her wrist and casually brushed it against the side of Yan Huirou’s face, roughly at her cheekbone. “Not bad. Very obedient.”
A female lead who gave her special treatment was quite pleasing to the eye.
Yan Huirou felt a slight itch on her cheek.
As she raised her hand, a shadow suddenly flickered in the corner of her eye. Her heart jumped, and she quickly turned her head to look.
But there was nothing there. A startled bird flew past, leaving only the wind swaying the branches.
Yan Huirou realized a moment too late that the brush against her cheek was already gone.
She couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed.
She had overreacted.
