Something’s wrong with you, really wrong.
Ever since that night she drank with Yue Jin, Fu Lingyi had been acting strangely.
For even just a short while that Yue Jin was gone, she would become so anxious she couldn’t bear it, searching everywhere. Her voice echoed throughout the Chongxiang Sword Sect .
“Fu Lingyi, are you done being annoying?!”
Yue Jin stood on a large rock by the river, hands on her hips, brows furrowed, looking utterly impatient. “I just lay here for a bit, just a bit! I’m not dead, why are you looking for me everywhere!”
“It’s Lingyi,” Fu Lingyi corrected her, worried she wasn’t stable on the rock, steadying her so she wouldn’t fall into the water. “Don’t talk about being dead or not dead. Come down, I’ll take you to eat something good.”
“Do I look like a spirit pig? I just had lunch!”
Yue Jin swatted her hand away. This rock was flat and spacious; she could lie on it and sleep normally, how could she possibly fall off? She was really underestimating her. Besides, she didn’t need Fu Lingyi protecting her like a child.
Fu Lingyi’s tone was gentle, coaxing her slowly. “Don’t look like one, don’t look like one. How about we go down the mountain to play? Or, how about we go listen to storytellers?”
“Don’t you have work to do?” Yue Jin was full of questions. “What about all those sect affairs for the Chongxiang Sword Sect ? Are you really ditching them?”
“No, I handle them at night while you’re asleep, and stay with you during the day.”
She couldn’t help but twitch her lips. “What about cultivation?”
Fu Lingyi shook her head, looking up at her with a radiant smile. “Not cultivating anymore.”
“Is there something wrong with your head? Did a tree fall on you?” Yue Jin bent down, placed a hand on her forehead, checking for fever. “You’re seriously ill.”
Fu Lingyi covered that hand with hers, pulled it down, and held it in her palm. “But I cultivate the Heartless Path, and this path isn’t working anymore. So I’m temporarily stopping cultivation, I’ll wait until Master comes out of seclusion. But this way, I’ll have more time to spend with you.”
Yue Jin was bewildered; she didn’t understand a single word. Cultivating perfectly fine, how could it suddenly stop working? Cultivating immortality, and you can just change paths halfway?
“Anyway,” Yue Jin pulled her hand away, looked left and right, worried disciples might be watching. “I’m not going anywhere, I’m just going to take a nap here. Don’t bother me, go play or eat by yourself.”
“Then I’ll stay with you.” Fu Lingyi flicked a finger, and a small rock rolled over, serving as a stool for her. She propped herself up on her elbows, sat on the small rock, and watched Yue Jin with a smile.
“Suit yourself, watch if you want.” Yue Jin resigned herself, turned her head and lay on her side on the large rock, her back to that person. Sunlight fell on her profile.
A moment.
Another moment.
An hour.
Two hours.
Yue Jin felt a chill creep up her spine from being watched.
“Ah, this is so annoying!” She turned around to face Fu Lingyi, gritting her teeth. “What do you want to do? I’ll do it with you!”
Her eyes curved, she leaned closer, staring at her. “Go down the mountain to listen to storytellers, will you listen?”
“Yes, yes, yes, I’ll listen to whatever you say, I can even go up and tell the story myself.”
“You’ll listen to whatever I say?”
“No, that’s not what I meant.”
“Then get up,” Fu Lingyi pulled her, hoisting her off the rock. “Let’s go down the mountain. What do you want to eat? Candied hawthorns?”
“I’ll reiterate, I’m not…”
“Not a spirit pig, I know. But you’re a stone spirit, made of stone. Hey, why do stone spirits like lying on rocks? Is it because they feel a sense of belonging?” As Fu Lingyi spoke, she actually started thinking seriously, deep in thought.
Yue Jin: “…I’m not a stone spirit either, and I don’t just like lying on rocks. It’s just that there’s nothing fun to do at your Chongxiang Sword Sect . It’s not even as good as that broken waterfall at Yaoguang Pavilion.”
“You like the Flowing Light Waterfall at Yaoguang Pavilion?”
Fu Lingyi thought even more seriously. She held Yue Jin’s hand and slowly walked down the mountain. “Hmm… the next time I go, I’ll ask their Sect Leader what the waterfall is made of. I’ll build one at the Chongxiang Sword Sect too.”
“You’re not serious, are you?”
“As long as you like it,” she looked at the person beside her, her smile seemingly overflowing from her eyes. “Whatever you like, I’ll bring it to you.”
Yue Jin looked back at her, her lips curving into a barely noticeable grin.
What kind of trick is she trying to pull now? I can’t figure her out at all!
Down the mountain from Chongxiang Peak, in Lin’an City, though the streets weren’t as bustling and crowded as those in Qian Chao City, they were still lively. There were taverns and travelers everywhere, and some even set up a log to perform acrobatics for passersby.
Fu Lingyi didn’t fly on her sword, nor did she use any spiritual energy. She simply held Yue Jin’s hand, walking through the streets like ordinary mortals.
“Want some mung bean cake?”
Yue Jin looked in the direction she pointed. That pastry vendor was someone she had met down the mountain before. That day she went down the mountain, she even bought some specifically to bring back for Fu Lingyi, but that time, Fu Lingyi had kept urging her to leave. It was after that day that she was so angry she wanted to leave the Chongxiang Sword Sect entirely.
Bringing up some unpleasant memories, Yue Jin bit her lower lip. “Don’t want any. I already said I don’t want to eat anything.”
“Let’s just take a look,” Fu Lingyi pulled her over, lowered her head to look, her expression full of novelty. “Look, they even sprinkled osmanthus powder on top…”
Before she finished speaking, she suddenly remembered that incident as well. She glanced sideways at Yue Jin’s expression.
That vendor lady recognized Yue Jin and smiled, saying, “Little sister, are you here to buy mung bean cake again? Hey, the person next to you, is she the one you said you wanted to bring some for back then?”
“No!”
She dropped those two words, pulled Fu Lingyi, and walked away, walking very quickly.
“Yue…” Fu Lingyi was about to tell her to walk slower, but remembered that after drinking that night, Yue Jin hadn’t let her call her Qing Shu. So she swallowed the rest of her words and changed what she was saying.
“Precious.”
“Wh-what?” Yue Jin turned back. Hearing that address in public made her feel very embarrassed, and her cheeks turned red.
“Thank you for specifically buying it for me. What happened that day was my fault, please don’t take it to heart.”
Yue Jin pouted. “Whatever. It was your money anyway.”
“Then, to show my gratitude,” Fu Lingyi pulled her towards a teahouse. “I’ll use my money again to treat you to tea and storytelling. Let’s go.”
Yue Jin had been having a blast during this period. Fu Lingyi indulged her in everything, going wherever she said, money flowing out like water. This person also didn’t cultivate. Every night at midnight, she would fly on her sword to the main peak to secretly handle miscellaneous sect matters and return covered in the morning glow, restarting a new round of playtime. No one could dissuade her because Yun Lingyue wasn’t there.
After four or five days of this, Yun Lingyue finally returned. She was covered in dirt, as if she had lost her soul, and no one knew where she had gone. Even when Fu Lingyi asked her what was wrong, she just gave a few perfunctory answers and left, staying holed up in her room all day.
Yue Jin was very curious. She was very curious, wanting to know what Wu Bei and the others did to Yun Lingyue after she chased them out that day, making her so silent. But she couldn’t just directly ask.
Yue Jin stood by the stream, feeling extremely conflicted. If this doesn’t work, maybe ask Fu Lingyi to go ask?
A slender little hand tugged at the corner of her clothes. Yue Jin turned her head, but didn’t see anyone. She slowly lowered her head.
“You are…”
The little girl looked up at her, didn’t speak, and then tugged at her again.
“Ah, you’re that person…” Yue Jin was actually a bit face blind. She took a long time to recognize her, finally figuring it out. “From Yaoguang Pavilion, brought by Yun Lingyue, that… what was it? Huang Yi Valley…”
The little girl nodded, rolled up her sleeve, and showed her arm. The character ‘Yi’ was clearly visible.
“Right, that… that Huang Yi Valley. Why are you here?”
“Sister!” Feng Ruiyan’s voice called out from afar, and she came running over, panting. “Sister, she is… she’s the one Senior Sister Yun asked me to look after. The moment I turned my head, she vanished immediately.”
“Yun Lingyue?” Yue Jin lowered her head. The girl was hiding behind her, her expression cautious. Thinking back to when they first met, she had also chosen to hide behind her like this.
“Yes, Senior Sister Yun. My heavens, this child runs too fast! She was gone in an instant. I looked for her for ages.” Feng Ruiyan panted heavily, calming down after a moment, then suddenly changed the subject. “Sister, Senior Sister Yun said Xiao Bei isn’t coming back. Is that true?”
Yue Jin hesitated. “Xiao Bei…”
“You were at Yaoguang Pavilion that day, weren’t you, Sister? Xiao Bei, she… Xiao Bei was killed by demonic cultivators, wasn’t she?”
“This…”
“Mm…” Feng Ruiyan suddenly covered her face halfway through speaking. Large tears streamed down through her fingers. “Senior Sister Yun said, Xiao Bei… Xiao Bei is never coming back. Xiao Bei, she…”
“Hey, don’t cry,” Yue Jin hated it most when people cried in front of her. Moreover, she didn’t know how to explain this matter. “She might not necessarily be gone. Yun Lingyue, she didn’t see it with her own eyes…”
“But Senior Sister brought back Xiao Bei’s hair! Every single strand of that snowy white hair, I remember it clearly!”
Feng Ruiyan cried for a while, wiped away her tears, and rubbed her face with her sleeve. “You don’t need to comfort me, Sister. What happened, happened. Senior Sister Yun is also having a very hard time, that’s why she entrusted this child to me to look after. I believe when she sees this child, it’s like seeing Xiao Bei again, so lively and adorable…”
Lively and adorable… Yue Jin thought of Wu Bei’s face, thinking of that person who indulged in drinking and merrymaking every day, staggering back to Qingyuan Palace drunk, flopping onto the ground, falling asleep instantly, and throwing up everywhere along the way. Lively, yes, but where’s the ‘adorable’ part?
“Actually, when I see her, I also think of Xiao Bei….” Feng Ruiyan went on and on, and started crying again, her nose kept running, making it hard to listen. Seeing her like this, the little girl shrank further behind Yue Jin.
Yue Jin tried to comfort her. “Alright, alright. This child doesn’t look like Wu Bei… or even Xiao Bei at all. She looks like she’s only around ten years old. Why are you seeing someone else in her so much? If you’re going to cry every time you see her, then give her to me. I’ll take care of her. That way it’ll be fine, right?”
“But, Sister,” Feng Ruiyan desperately shook her head. “I can’t trouble you, Sister. You have important matters to attend to soon.”
Important matters? What important matters?
“Important matters or minor matters, none of them are important. Yun Lingyue keeps shutting herself in lately, it’s because of Xiao Bei, right? Then I’ll give you a task. If you have nothing to do, go and comfort her. I’ll take care of this child. Anyway, I’m free every day. I can just take her to play, right?”
Yue Jin bent down, asking the little girl gently, “What do you say?”
The little girl looked at her, opening her round eyes wide, like glass marbles, nodded, and smiled a little.
