Fu Lingyi’s heart trembled slightly.
She also replied softly in a low voice, “What?”
Yue Jin leaned on her shoulder, looking like she was about to fall asleep. Her eyes were half-closed, her lips a bright, deep red as if painted with rouge, and the crisp taste of alcohol still lingered on her breath.
“…Actually, I didn’t mean to.”
“At first, I just wanted to… just wanted to humble you, make you lose face completely, make you know how capable I am.”
“After all, I’m that capable.”
As she spoke, she curled herself into a ball, closed her eyes, and buried her head in Fu Lingyi’s embrace, her hands still tightly clutching the corner of her clothes.
Like a child.
Fu Lingyi stopped walking and quietly watched her.
“I didn’t know… you would receive that kind of punishment, I didn’t know…” Yue Jin’s voice choked up. She was very drunk, speaking haltingly, not smoothly at all. “I really didn’t know… if every time I came, you would be whipped, or, or it was the Disciplinary Hall, then I, then I really didn’t know…”
“Don’t cry,” Fu Lingyi said, carrying her back to the bed in her bamboo house. She gently stroked her head to comfort her. “Stop crying.”
“It’s all in the past.”
Yue Jin lay on the bed, making a fuss, tossing and turning. She was also angry. “You don’t understand! It’s not over!”
“It’s over, I don’t care anymore, I forgive you,” Fu Lingyi reached out, hugged her tightly, and held her still so she couldn’t thrash around. “Forgiving means forgiving everything, really!”
The person in her embrace fussed for a bit, but when she looked closely again, she had actually fallen into a deep sleep, with a few tears still clinging to the corners of her eyes.
She must have responded to her words and felt at ease.
For some reason, that pitiful and helpless appearance made Fu Lingyi feel very familiar, and also very nostalgic.
Yue Jin was very much like someone she had once known.
That was also a bitterly cold day, with ice and snow everywhere.
Many years ago, Fu Lingyi was still a pampered young lady in her family, living in luxury. She cultivated alone at home and never stepped out the door.
That year, heavy snow fell like goose feathers. The flames of war burned in the surrounding areas, and the house servants had nowhere left to go. The mortal realm was no longer a perfect sanctuary after all. She had to follow her mother and return to Chongxiang Sword Sect .
On the way, she encountered someone.
The temple was solemn, with withered trees and a low wall. It was there she told her mother that she wanted to bring that little thing, almost covered by snowflakes, back to the carriage.
At first, she was merely curious, finding it novel that this child was dirty like a wild cat yet always blinked bright, sparkling eyes and only huddled close to her.
Besides this, whoever came near, she would bare a mouth of fierce teeth.
After a long time, Fu Lingyi herself couldn’t tell if it was merely care or if she truly liked this child.
Clearly so small, yet she dared to stand in front of her.
Clearly so weak, yet she always smiled for her.
Clearly…
Clearly she could have lived many, many more years, yet died on that cold day.
It was all the demonic path’s fault.
Fu Lingyi bent down and stared at Yue Jin’s face for a long, long time, so long she felt like she was going to bore a hole in her.
It wasn’t Yue Jin’s fault, but it was the demonic path’s fault.
It was the previous demon lord who killed her playmate.
She didn’t even have a name, and now Fu Lingyi couldn’t even clearly remember her appearance.
That day, that child had just gone to buy a sugar figurine. The demonic path, however, suddenly went on a killing spree at the edge of the mortal city. Fu Qingxian and she went to stop them, but after returning, they could no longer find any trace of that child.
Just like that, she appeared from the snow and perished in the heavy snow.
“Yue Jin…”
Fu Lingyi murmured, gently stroking the person on the bed’s forehead, wanting her to sleep a little more comfortably.
“Yue Jin, I hated you back then not because you opposed me everywhere, but because I thought you would continue the actions of the previous demon lord.”
“But ever since I spent many days with you, I’ve gradually come to know you’re not that kind of person.”
“I don’t hate you.”
“I really don’t hate you.”
Fu Lingyi slowly let her hand slide down and touched Yue Jin’s fair, rosy face, like holding a precious treasure.
Afterwards, she leaned forward even more and kissed her.
The lingering taste of alcohol spread in the air, and the entire room was filled with an enchanting, incredibly intimate atmosphere.
Fu Lingyi released the hand she was holding and moved to the side. Her hand gradually moved up to the slim wrist of the person beneath her, gently stroking it, then moving further up to clasp her fingers, their digits intertwining.
Drunk Yue Jin didn’t feel much, but her body responded very honestly. Her collar was wide open, her eyes hazy, her mouth slightly parted, and she lifted her head a little.
Fu Lingyi moved from sitting sideways to climbing onto the bed, then leaning her upper body down. The bed rarely bore the weight of two people; it rocked and creaked loudly, seeming a little overwhelmed.
“Mm…”
“Don’t…”
The sounds, a mix of voices, one couldn’t tell who they came from, but hearing them made one’s ears burn.
After a moment, Fu Lingyi finally raised her head, separating from the place that had been pressed against hers for a while, already warm. She panted slightly. This was the first time she had done this, and she only dared to be so bold because of the alcohol.
Will Yue Jin be angry when she wakes up?
But they’re about to get married, so it should be fine, right?
Yue Jin didn’t leave with those followers, but came back with her instead. That must mean she’s willing to marry her.
Fu Lingyi bit her lower lip, feeling the lingering warmth on her own lips. She then stared at the person’s deep red lips, which had been kissed so intently by her, and her face flushed red with shyness.
She got out of bed, pulled the blanket over Yue Jin properly, and placed a restriction spell at the door, forbidding anyone from entering.
Promptly, Fu Lingyi lifted a corner of the blanket again, slipped inside, and lay down on her side beside her, fully clothed.
Her gaze was like water, tender and full of affection.
“Sweet dreams.” After saying that, she leaned closer and kissed the corner of her lips.
The sky was hazy, the first hint of dawn appearing. This very moment was precisely cultivation time. Disciples hurried past outside Fu Lingyi’s courtyard gate, rushing to attend morning lessons.
“Ah!”
A shout mixed with shrillness came from within the courtyard.
Everyone glanced sideways but then stopped, not daring to go inside to investigate.
Yue Jin sat on the ground, one hand holding her shoulder, clutching the collar of her inner clothes tightly to protect her chest. Unfortunately, she wasn’t wearing much, and her outer robe was gone. As she made this gesture, it looked as though she had suffered some immense injustice.
Trembling, she pointed at the bed, gulping, unable to say a complete sentence.
“You, you, you, I, I, we, we…”
Fu Lingyi was woken up by her noise. She opened her eyes and looked at the person on the ground with a confused expression. “How did you end up sleeping on the ground after falling asleep?” she asked. “Get up quickly. The ground is cold; be careful not to get sick.”
“Don’t come over here!”
Yue Jin scrambled up using both hands, retreating far backwards awkwardly, her breathing uneven. “Wait a moment, wait a moment, let me think.”
“What are you thinking about? Come onto the bed first.” Fu Lingyi tilted her head slightly to look at her, watching her bare feet with concern, intending to go over and help her up.
Yue Jin raised a hand, interrupting her action. “You tell me!”
“I’ll tell you.”
“Last night, after drinking… did we do anything?”
Upon hearing that, Fu Lingyi pursed her lips. She was a little worried. What if she accidentally said that she already knew Yue Jin had regained her memory? Would this person just run away directly?
She also wasn’t sure if this person still remembered last night’s events.
“No… no, we didn’t do anything.”
“You hesitated!” Yue Jin was filled with outrage, reacting dramatically. She shouted loudly, covered her head, and squatted on the ground. “Ah… I knew it! Drinking messes things up!”
“What exactly is wrong? I already said we didn’t.” Fu Lingyi got out of bed, wanting to go and hug her, to carry her back onto the bed.
Before she could reach out, she saw that person seemed to have made a decision. Yue Jin looked up and gazed at her.
“I will take responsibility for you.”
“What?”
“I said,” Yue Jin stood up, took a deep breath, pulled Fu Lingyi’s hand, and looked into her eyes. “It was my fault… I absolutely shouldn’t have. But since it’s already happened, there’s nothing that can be undone. From now on, I will take responsibility for you.”
“Take responsibility for what?” Fu Lingyi laughed awkwardly. “What do you mean?”
Yue Jin shook her head, signaling that she didn’t need to keep hiding it. “I know you might find it hard to say, but last night, everyone was at fault. Don’t always think about bearing it alone; we can face it together, right?”
Fu Lingyi listened, completely confused, and was a bit displeased. “What exactly are you talking about? Stop speaking in riddles.”
Yue Jin “Tsked.” “Look at you, insisting on making someone explain things clearly. It’s, it’s just that last night we… look, I’m not even dressed properly, and you were still lying next to me. Didn’t the two of us…?”
“Didn’t… what?”
She leaned closer, into Fu Lingyi’s ear, and said two words.
Fu Lingyi’s face immediately flushed with two patches of red.
“You, you’re improper!”
“It’s just human nature, you can’t blame me,” Yue Jin raised her head, her gaze shifting. “This… it can’t be just my fault, can it? Everyone drank too much.”
Fu Lingyi raised her hand, couldn’t bear to hit her, but fiercely put it down again. “No! I said no!”
“Is that the truth? But you hesitated at first…”
“There just wasn’t! You’re not allowed to talk nonsense anymore, not allowed!”
Fu Lingyi was furious. This time she was definitely really angry. She slammed the door shut and went out, leaving Yue Jin alone in the room.
Yue Jin: “…”
“If there wasn’t, there wasn’t. Just say it properly, why get so angry?”
She couldn’t dislike me, could she?
Not long after, just as Yue Jin finished putting on her clothes, Fu Lingyi opened the door and came in again. She didn’t seem to have completely calmed down, but her expression was a little better.
As she entered, she said just one sentence.
“Are you hungry?”
Yue Jin looked at her in surprise, thought for a moment, and said, “A little bit.”
“Then wait for me for a while; I’ll go make it. Don’t run around here.”
“Where would I run off to?”
Fu Lingyi didn’t answer her. “Anyway, you must wait for me to come back.”
“I’ll wait, I’ll wait,” Yue Jin waved her hand. “Hurry there and back, don’t let me starve.”
“And also…”
Fu Lingyi’s blush from before hadn’t faded yet; in fact, it looked even more intense than before. “Also, don’t forget…”
“Don’t forget our dao companion ceremony. I just went to check, and the time is almost here.”
Yue Jin shifted her gaze and slowly asked, “Huh?”
“Then…” Fu Lingyi’s voice gradually became smaller.
“Then, the things that weren’t finished last night… can only be done. Not before that.”
“If you want to look forward to it, just wait until that day.”
The door closed as she went out, leaving only Yue Jin sitting alone by the bed.
“Dao companion ceremony?”
“Wait a moment, what wasn’t finished? Come back and explain clearly what happened last night!”
