Yun Lingyue searched Qianchao City for days without rest, bracing herself for the worst.
She asked everyone she met if they had seen a white-haired girl whose height reached her eyebrows.
“Aren’t you tired? Even I’m tired of listening.” Song Yin yawned, appearing as Yun Lingyue cornered the same person for the fifth time.
“It’s you,” Yun Lingyue stepped forward and grabbed her shoulder. “You told me before that Wu Bei was in Qianchao City. Now quickly tell me again, is she alright!”
“Fellow Daoist, you’re too impatient. Some things can’t be rushed.” She tilted her head, took out a divination plate, and shook it. The spheres inside rolled and clicked against each other. “See? She’s still within Qianchao City. She’s just inside Yaoguang Pavilion.”
Yun Lingyue shrugged her off, said thank you, and prepared to fly off on her sword.
“Yaoguang Pavilion doesn’t welcome the Chongxiang Sword Sect these days. You won’t even be able to get past the gate.”
The voice behind her echoed faintly. Yun Lingyue stopped abruptly, barely managed to turn back, withdrew her sword, and looked at her.
Song Yin raised a hand, walked forward, and patted her shoulder. “Fellow Daoist Yun, you’re not like them. You’re frank and straightforward. When I talk to you, I’ll always be a bit more direct so you don’t misunderstand.”
Her sword trembled out of its sheath and pressed against the other person’s neck. “I truly don’t understand. Say it again?”
“Haha, that’s not what I meant,” Song Yin carefully pinned the sword and gently pushed it away. “What I mean is, there’s a major event constantly unfolding in the world. There’s someone who is harming the common people, and the Heavenly Dao will not tolerate it.”
“And you are all involved in this event, connected in one way or another. Like a river of people converging, you’ll all gather at the same point eventually. Everyone else has gone; only you are missing.”
Yun Lingyue’s heart burned with anxiety. This person in front of her was rambling about irrelevant things again.
I really want to split her in half with my sword.
Her sword remained pressed against her neck. “Get to the point.”
Song Yin wore an expression that said, “See? I knew you wouldn’t understand.” She said, “Since you’re going, you can’t go just yet. Yaoguang Pavilion is about to face trouble. You should first go to another place, find some things, and then sneak in during the chaos.”
“Listen to me. You won’t go wrong.”
Yue Jin transformed her appearance, disguising herself as a disciple just like the other two, and entered the Yaoguang Pavilion’s outer sect.
Ye Yushuang stood in the courtyard at this moment. She couldn’t stay idle a single day, always needing to guide disciples she met, catching anyone to question them about their cultivation progress.
To be precise, it was about their financial status.
It happened to be noon today, and she caught the three of them who had sneaked in through the sect gate.
“Stop, you three. Are you new here?”
Evil Envoy was just about to step forward with a smirk and scold her for being nosy when Yue Jin pulled her back. Benevolent Envoy quickly spoke up, “Senior Sister Ye, we are new outer disciples accepted by Elder Yuan. We just joined and don’t understand the rules yet. We hope you can be lenient.”
“Alright. Since you’re new disciples, I won’t say much else. Let’s start with the necessary procedures… What’s wrong with your leg?” Ye Yushuang put on the air of a senior sister, just about to give them some pointers, when she noticed Yue Jin trying to hide something. This made Yue Jin seem a little familiar.
“Oh, Senior Sister Ye,” Benevolent Envoy quickly went up to her, nudging her aside and smiling obsequiously. “She’s just clumsy; she can trip over herself even when walking. Let’s not mind her. Please, continue, continue.”
“What do you mean clumsy, Benevolent Envoy? I’m telling you, don’t speak ill of the Esteemed One…”
Evil Envoy heard this and got angry, about to retort, but Yue Jin covered her mouth with her hand and whispered, “Go back first. Be obedient.”
She pouted, feeling a little wronged, but still grumbled her agreement.
Benevolent Envoy shielded Yue Jin slightly, gesturing for her to leave as well, indicating she could handle things alone.
“What’s your name? Wu… what?” Ye Yushuang was beaming from the flattery. “Those two are indeed a bit clueless, but you seem capable. Come join me. From now on, you’ll be registered under the Sect Leader’s lineage, no need to remain with Elder Yuan Pei.”
Benevolent Envoy was bewildered. It was her first time receiving such high praise for her acting skills. In just a few tugs and pulls, Ye Yushuang dragged her away.
Yue Jin let out a long breath of relief. She had almost been discovered.
“Esteemed One, you don’t need to worry. If she dares to do anything disrespectful to you…” Evil Envoy’s lips curved. The dissatisfaction in her eyes widened, but her smile also deepened. “…I’ll eliminate her for you. I guarantee no one will ever know.”
Yue Jin gently tapped her head. “What did you promise me? We’re infiltrating right now. You need to be low-key.”
“Ah, Esteemed One, I forgot. I was wrong…”
Evil Envoy touched the spot where she’d been tapped, her eyes moist. She lowered her gaze, her expression showing a significant amount of shyness.
She leaned closer, wanting to hug Yue Jin and act spoiled again.
“You two seem very close.”
A strange voice came from above her head, carrying a hint of subtle, hard-to-detect awkwardness. Yue Jin raised her head. On the low, carved railing wall sat a woman with flowing sleeves. Her appearance was unremarkable, but her eyes held the vastness of stars.
“You are…”
“Who are you?” Evil Envoy had been interrupted multiple times today, and her inner dissatisfaction had reached its peak. “Does that have anything to do with you?”
“Why be so sensitive?” The person on the wall sat casually, propping an elbow and looking down with amusement. “You two can act like that in broad daylight, but I, a bystander, aren’t allowed to take a closer look?”
“You!” Evil Envoy wanted to say more, but remembering how Yue Jin had just reminded her not to be too high-profile, she restrained herself, deciding not to start a conflict.
“It’s not what you’re thinking. She’s just my younger sister from home. The two of us came to Yaoguang Pavilion to learn techniques and seek immortality. We hope Fellow Daoist doesn’t mind.” Yue Jin gave a slight bow, raising her eyes to look at the person.
I keep feeling a little familiar, but I can’t pinpoint where.
“Mind? Why would I mind? I don’t know you at all. What’s there to mind?”
Evil Envoy tugged at Yue Jin’s sleeve. “She’s being sarcastic. Let’s just ignore her and go.”
The person stared at their wrists, her gaze deepening, then jumped down from the wall, blocking their path.
With a flick of her hand, she turned and stood tall. “Since you’re disciples seeking immortality, who have you apprenticed under? Let’s chat. Perhaps we’re under the same master.”
Yue Jin raised an eyebrow. “Under Elder Yuan.”
“What a coincidence. I’m also…”
“Oh, no, I misspoke. It’s Elder Ji.”
“Thinking about it, I seem to have misspoke as well. I’m also Elder Ji…”
“Actually, the Sect Leader just accepted us, so now we should be under the Sect Leader.”
“…”
Evil Envoy chuckled softly, covering her mouth and tilting her head to whisper, “Worthy of the Esteemed One.”
The corner of that person’s eye twitched. Seeing the little interaction between the two people opposite her, her expression turned unhappy. “If Fellow Daoist doesn’t wish to say, I won’t force it. I didn’t come here for that anyway.”
“Just now, coming from east to west, I think I heard someone looking for you. So I specifically came to tell you.” She looked at Evil Envoy, signaling her.
“Me?”
“Yes, a woman who doesn’t smile much. I just glanced at her, and she looked like she wanted to dig out my eyes.”
That sounds like the Benevolent Envoy.
Evil Envoy was reluctant. She had finally managed to be alone with Yue Jin and truly didn’t want to leave.
But the mission is most important.
She bit her lower lip, a look of reluctance on her face. Yue Jin brushed away the stray hairs from her face, her tone gentle. “Go.”
This was tenderness she had never shown to anyone else.
That person, Fu Lingyi, crushed the unwillingness in her heart.
Yue Jin had always been cautious and willful towards her, never this gentle.
Who was this person she treated with such gentleness?
“Who is she?” Thinking this, she blurted out the question without a second thought.
The wind picked up, and the clouds stilled. In the garden-like courtyard, only the two of them remained.
Yue Jin felt slightly annoyed. “Fellow Daoist, aren’t you being a bit too nosy?”
“Why? Won’t you tell me?” Fu Lingyi raised her head. She stepped on fallen leaves as she walked forward, looking straight through the face altered by illusion to the person’s true appearance. “You’re so intimate. She doesn’t seem like a younger sister from home at all. Could she be your Dao companion?”
“You are truly strange. What relationship I have with her is none of your business.”
If it wasn’t for that lingering feeling of familiarity, Yue Jin would have truly rolled her eyes and turned hostile.
“Suspicious movements, and everything you say is a probe. You aren’t from Yaoguang Pavilion, are you?”
Fu Lingyi leaned in, getting very close. “You’re avoiding my question.”
Yue Jin couldn’t stand it. She rolled her eyes. “What are you talking about ‘your question’? Do we even know each other? You’re talking like we’re very familiar.”
Fu Lingyi slightly pursed her lips, the corners of her mouth turning down.
That tone made her recall the time the Demon Lord had first used brute force to bully and humiliate her.
Not to mention, the Demon Lord, Yue Jin, had now recovered her memories.
She almost forgot she was here to settle scores with her.
“Of course we’re familiar. Or rather, I’m familiar with you.”
“After all, the Demon Lord wouldn’t remember a minor character like me.”
Yue Jin was shocked. She lowered her eyebrows. “You know I’m the Demon Lord?”
“Back then, I made a small mistake and was severely injured by you. I rebelled against my master and became a rogue cultivator. Now, I’ve finally found you, but I suppose you probably forgot me long ago.”
Fu Lingyi deliberately said this, intending to create a false identity for herself.
She was certain she could confuse Yue Jin’s perception.
But she didn’t expect Yue Jin to only slightly frown. “Impossible. I remember everything I’ve done. I’ve never encountered someone like you.”
Fu Lingyi: “…”
“How about you tell me your name, and I’ll try to recall?”
“…Fu, Fu Fu.”
“No, I’ve never heard of her,” Yue Jin said calmly, radiating confidence. “That wasn’t me. I kept a list of everyone I bullied. You’ve got the wrong person.”
Fu Lingyi took a deep breath. “You actually kept track?”
“Naturally. I can’t let others wrongly accuse me.” Yue Jin seemed a little pleased.
“You’re certainly open about it,” Fu Lingyi’s face was gloomy, her mood sour. “You dare to openly admit your identity like this? News of your death is circulating throughout the cultivation world right now. What do you think will happen if they find out the Demon Lord isn’t dead?”
“Hmph. What good would telling others do you?”
Yue Jin sneered. “Since you already know I’m the Demon Lord, you must also understand my abilities. I believe you won’t do something so foolish. Otherwise, the countless fallen leaves of Yaoguang Pavilion will bury your corpse right here.”
Fu Lingyi immediately made a move, grabbing her wrist. “Do you think I can’t tell? There’s not a single ripple of spiritual energy on you. Your cultivation circulation is stagnant. When that person left just now, you had no one to rely on, yet you still dare to threaten me?”
Yue Jin, whose wrist was seized, wasn’t bothered at all. Right now, inside Yaoguang Pavilion, she had four followers. Not to mention, Benevolent Envoy had just given her a paper kite that could transfer spiritual energy. If something happened to her, she only needed to gently blow on it. Even if the other two didn’t come, her loyal followers, the Benevolent Envoy and Evil Envoy, would certainly rush over.
Furthermore, this person’s words still left room for negotiation.
“That’s not a threat. I’m stating a fact.”
“So you know I’m the Demon Lord? What of it? What do you hope to gain with this information?”
Yue Jin met her gaze, staring intently. “All that talk about resentment was fake, wasn’t it? Your name is fake too. You just want to use the information about the Demon Lord to get something from me, right? Why don’t you tell me what you want and see if I can give you an answer?”
Fu Lingyi raised an eyebrow. She didn’t say a word for a long time.
The two remained in a stalemate for a while, until dry, yellow fallen leaves drifted to the ground, scattering onto their foreheads and shoulders.
Only then did she slowly speak. “I want to know…”
Yue Jin: “Yes?”
“I want to know… who was that person just now?”
Yue Jin: “…”
After going in circles for so long, it’s still just this insignificant question!
