The lit screen soon went dark again. Xiao Xing stared at it in a daze for a moment, then picked up her phone, unlocked it, and opened WeChat.
Before she could reply, another message came in. This time it was a voice message. Xiao Xing hesitated, then tapped it open.
“Ah Xing, Ah Xing, I want to see you.”
The female voice was sweet, soft, and tender. The person speaking sounded very young.
Xiao Xing replied: “I’m very busy tonight. Let’s meet another time when I’m free.”
An Huaijian sighed in disappointment. An Huaigu, busy in the kitchen, poked her head out and glanced at her. “Xiao Xing rejected you again?”
“Mm.” Ever since Xiao Xing noticed that An Huaijian liked her, every time An Huaijian asked to meet, Xiao Xing said she was busy. Looking at Xiao Xing’s reply, inspiration flashed through An Huaijian’s mind. She thought of a perfect way to see her.
She stood and ran into the kitchen, saying excitedly, “Sis, I can start my internship in two more months. Help me get into your company, okay?”
“Um… best if I can be Ah Xing’s secretary. The close personal kind.”
An Huaigu turned the heat lower and looked back at her. “Isn’t your major interior design? You’re running off to be a secretary? If Mom and Dad find out, they’ll beat you to death.”
An Huaijian went forward, hugged her arm, and acted cute. “Aiya, Sis, if you don’t tell them, they won’t know. Help me get into your company, okay? I really like Ah Xing…”
After rejecting An Huaijian, Xiao Xing set her phone aside and continued reading the financial report. Thinking of Bai Moqing, she closed her eyes and secretly looked at her, only to find that Bai Moqing was no longer in bed.
In such a short time, where had she run off to?
Xiao Xing wanted to spread her divine sense and look for Bai Moqing, but after a moment of hesitation, she gave up.
Bai Moqing had stayed under the covers for only a few seconds before suddenly realizing why she feared that lightning. It was because it was not ordinary lightning. It contained the laws of the Heavenly Dao.
If that was the case, then someone must be about to undergo a tribulation.
Bai Moqing thought of the person who saved her. If Heaven had not taken pity on her, then the person who saved her must have very high cultivation. Looking across H City, if anyone were to undergo a tribulation, that person was the most likely.
Bai Moqing quickly crawled out from under the covers and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking at the sky outside. But after that single flash, there was no follow-up, and no tribulation clouds gathered on the horizon. It was strange and abnormal.
An illusion? Or…
Bai Moqing suddenly thought of the little cat demon she had seen a few days ago.
She focused her thoughts, and in the blink of an eye, appeared in the eastern suburbs.
Compared to the city center, the suburbs were much quieter.
The night was cool as water. Cold wind blew, and the lights were dim. Bai Moqing walked around, but the cat demon was no longer there.
She lifted her head toward the sky. The deep, dark night was thick with clouds, but not one of them was a tribulation cloud. Her divine sense covered a radius of ten li, and there were no marks on the ground from any tribulation power.
She closed her eyes and went home.
The moment her body landed beside the bed, the phone on the bedside table rang. Bai Moqing walked over and saw the name on the screen. It was Dr. Xue again.
Speaking of which, she and Xue Shichu had not contacted each other again since that dinner. Xue Shichu was probably busy working at the hospital.
“Hello, Dr. Xue.” Bai Moqing answered. A gentle laugh came through the receiver, and Xue Shichu said, “Moqing, how have you been these past few days? Are things good at the new company?”
Bai Moqing was silent for a moment, then said, “Very good.” Thinking of the charming Sister An and the cold, detached President Xiao, she repeated, “Very good.”
“A double confirmation is a denial. And according to psychology, unconsciously repeating the same thing twice means you are not doing very well. Did you meet someone troublesome?” After a pause, Xue Shichu switched to a serious tone. “If the job makes you unhappy, I can help you find an easier one.”
Bai Moqing turned and sat on the bed. “Did you call me just to say this?”
Xue Shichu laughed softly. “No. I… missed you.”
Both ends of the call fell silent.
Just when Xue Shichu thought Bai Moqing was about to hang up, Bai Moqing asked, “If you act like this, won’t your boyfriend get angry?”
“Boyfriend?” Xue Shichu was stunned. Then she recalled that when she had met Bai Moqing on the street that day, there had been a man beside her. She burst out laughing and quickly explained, “That wasn’t my boyfriend. That was my older brother. Didn’t you notice he looks a lot like me?”
At the time, Bai Moqing had only felt they had the look of a married couple. She had never thought of siblings. Now that she thought about the man’s appearance, she realized their brows and eyes really were similar. Both had almond eyes, and when they smiled, they looked gentle and charming.
“So he was your older brother.”
Xue Shichu lay sideways against the sofa and grabbed a pillow into her arms. “I’m single. What about you?”
Actually, she did not need to ask. She already knew Bai Moqing did not have a partner.
But confirming it in person was better. What if Bai Moqing was a special case, cold by nature but still had a boyfriend? If Xue Shichu pursued her then, she would become the third party.
Bai Moqing heard the meaning in Xue Shichu’s words, but she did not want to discuss feelings in depth. “I’m single, and I have never thought about dating.”
“You…”
“Sorry. I have something to do.” Before Xue Shichu could finish, Bai Moqing hung up.
Xue Shichu was speechless. Looking at the call record that had been ended, she touched her own face. She was not ugly, and she did not look like a creep. Why was Bai Moqing so unwilling to deal with her?
Bai Moqing had hurriedly hung up because she truly had something to do. She had heard a sharp cat cry from downstairs. “Meow!”
She lived on the twelfth floor, dozens of meters above the ground. The soundproofing in the apartment was very good, yet she had still heard the cat cry. That meant it was not an ordinary cat.
She spread out her divine sense and saw a little orange cat being held by the back of the neck by a patrolling security guard. He was walking toward the entrance of the residential complex.
The complex she lived in was high-end. Security guards patrolled the grounds twenty-four hours a day, preventing fires, thefts, and also driving out stray dogs and cats.
That little orange cat was probably the first stray cat to sneak into the complex.
“Little thing, where did you run in from?” The guard was a tall, thin young man, only about twenty. He wanted to poke the little orange cat’s belly with his finger. The cat showed her claws, bared her teeth, and yowled nonstop. The moment his finger came near, she swiped at him. If he had not pulled back quickly, there would probably already be three bloody marks.
The guard laughed. “Pretty fierce.” When he reached the security booth, he used the light to look at the little orange cat’s belly. Seeing no balls, he said, “So it’s a little female cat. No wonder you’re so fierce.”
He crouched, supported the cat’s bottom, and with slight force, tossed her out. In the blink of an eye, the little orange cat darted away and vanished.
Bai Moqing’s divine sense locked onto the little orange cat. Seeing her run deep into a roadside flower bed, Bai Moqing moved and appeared before her. The little orange cat only had time to meow once before Bai Moqing caught her and brought her home.
“Did you come here looking for me?” Bai Moqing placed the orange cat on the coffee table. The table was white, and as soon as the little orange cat stepped onto it, four tiny plum blossoms appeared. When her paws moved, several more little prints appeared.
Although Bai Moqing could not sense demonic energy on the orange cat, she was certain this was the same cat demon who had been walking around naked.
The little orange cat tilted her head and looked at Bai Moqing. A moment later, she shook out her fur, turned, and jumped off the table.
Pale golden light scattered. Within the light, the little orange cat’s body changed into a human form. Once again… naked.
Bai Moqing quickly covered her eyes and turned her head. “Can you put on clothes?”
“Meow.” Even after taking human form, the orange cat still opened her mouth with a cat cry. She swallowed and said, not very smoothly, “Aow… I learned how to transform not long ago. I still can’t control myself well. I can only be like this.”
Bai Moqing rubbed her forehead, speechless. “Wait here. I’ll find you some clothes.”
The orange cat called out to stop her. “No need. I can’t maintain this for long.”
“Right. You’re a cultivator?” The little orange cat came closer to Bai Moqing, lifted her nose, and sniffed. “The spiritual energy on you is very rich.” Richer than several cultivation places she had found.
She opened her mouth and inhaled, but found that the spiritual energy on Bai Moqing did not move at all. It was as if it were sealed and locked inside Bai Moqing.
She felt a little disappointed.
Bai Moqing noticed the little orange cat’s action, and her eyes turned cold. She looked back and said, “Don’t randomly absorb my spiritual energy.” Seeing the little orange cat’s full, naked chest, Bai Moqing’s cheeks reddened, and she quickly turned her head back.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a thin fleece blanket on the corner of the sofa. She strode over, grabbed it, and threw it accurately over the little orange cat. “Wrap yourself.”
The little orange cat took the blanket, shook it open, and wrapped herself in it. “Done.” She blinked.
Bai Moqing turned back and tested a glance. Seeing that the little orange cat really had wrapped herself up, she faced her.
Looking at the little orange cat from close up, Bai Moqing saw a fair neck, flax-colored hair, and a height one head shorter than her own. Her eyes were round, bright, and watery. She looked cute and obedient.
“Little cat, did you come here looking for me?”
The little orange cat honestly nodded. “My name is Feiyue. What about you?”
“Bai Moqing.” The suggestive glimpses under the blanket made Bai Moqing unsure where to put her eyes. If she was not careful, she would see something.
Feiyue pressed her lips together and stated her purpose directly. “Can you take me in?”
Bai Moqing: “…”
A demon asking a cultivator to take her in? Anyone could tell she had ulterior motives.
She had just said the word no, and the word way was still stuck in her throat, when Feiyue said, “I can teach you how to hide a cultivator’s aura.”
It was truly a tempting condition. Unfortunately, Bai Moqing knew how to hide her aura. “I know how to restrain my aura.”
“But I can still find you. I have a way to make it so other people can’t find you.” Feiyue’s brows lifted, and she smiled proudly.
Seeing Bai Moqing’s expression waver, Feiyue moved and changed back into the little orange cat. “Meow.” She called to Bai Moqing, pressing her ears back.
Bai Moqing crouched down. Just as she reached out, the little orange cat rubbed against her. The soft, smooth fur felt very comfortable to touch.
“Meow.” I’m very good.
Bai Moqing considered it, then withdrew her hand. “Then… stay.”
