On the way back, Xiao Xing walked very slowly. Her face was cool and calm, her eyes slightly lowered as she thought about something. Bai Moqing held the materials and followed at her right rear with quick little steps.
When they passed the assistants’ office, Bai Moqing turned her head and looked over. The door and blinds were still shut. She did not know what important secret Assistant Tang and Sister An were discussing inside, to hide things so tightly.
After entering the office, Xiao Xing went straight behind her desk and sat down. Bai Moqing stood upright in front of the desk, thinking President Xiao had something to say. In the end, President Xiao only told her to read the materials carefully a few times and revise the two points they had discussed in the reception room.
The office had everything, even two desks. Xiao Xing sat behind her own large three-meter desk and had Bai Moqing sit across from her. Like a parent watching a child do homework, she made Bai Moqing review the materials and hand-edit the cooperation proposal right in front of her.
The late-autumn, early-winter sunlight slanted through the floor-to-ceiling windows and fell across the floor. The warm glow made people sleepy.
Bai Moqing sat perfectly straight, holding the pen Xiao Xing had given her, reading each word and sentence with care.
For a moment, there was an illusion of peaceful days and quiet years. Xiao Xing slowly lifted her head, and her gaze fell on Bai Moqing.
Bai Moqing wore a navy wool coat with a black turtleneck underneath, covering her whole neck. Her long hair fell over her shoulders. Because her head was lowered, a few strands of hair lay across the documents, making her look quiet and composed.
Xiao Xing closed her eyes and used her divine sense to examine Bai Moqing’s spiritual platform. The spiritual energy inside was a little richer than a few days ago. Unfortunately, her divine sense and soul had suffered heavy damage. It would be hard for her to recover her former cultivation in just a few days.
In this world, the Heavenly Dao had long been set. Cultivators were not allowed to become immortals. Even if Bai Moqing’s talent was higher, she still could not survive an immortal ascension tribulation.
If she cultivated back to the Immortal Transformation stage and suffered another lightning tribulation, she would probably return to chaos.
Being unable to recover her cultivation quickly had instead become a good thing.
Xiao Xing slowly withdrew her divine sense, opened her eyes, glanced at Bai Moqing, and lowered her head to read the materials.
Just as she lowered her head, Bai Moqing lifted hers.
Bai Moqing had only been pretending to read the materials seriously. Her divine sense had been on Xiao Xing the whole time. She knew Xiao Xing had been looking at her with a gaze and emotions she could not understand. After that, Xiao Xing had closed her eyes and frowned, as if thinking about something.
Although Bai Moqing did not know what it was, it was probably related to her.
If she had not sensed no spiritual energy or cultivation from Xiao Xing, she would definitely think Xiao Xing was also a cultivator.
Thinking of the method Feiyue had taught her to hide her aura, Bai Moqing’s heart jumped hard twice. What if President Xiao had hidden her aura too?
No. Impossible.
They had touched closely before. In that situation, no matter how high a person’s cultivation was, they could not hide the aura of a cultivator.
Bai Moqing pressed down the wild thoughts in her heart and focused on revising the documents.
After a long while, she breathed out softly, straightened her back, and handed the materials to Xiao Xing with both hands. “President Xiao, it is done.”
She had kept her head lowered for so long that her spine hurt. Worse, President Xiao had been sitting right across from her, so she did not dare move too much or even breathe too loudly.
Xiao Xing accepted the materials and flipped through them.
Bai Moqing had folded the corners of the few pages she had revised, so Xiao Xing found them at once. After looking through the clauses Bai Moqing had changed, she saw that besides the two points discussed in the reception room, Bai Moqing had also adjusted the related clauses.
“Very good.” Xiao Xing lifted her head and smiled at Bai Moqing. “Letting you stay was the right decision.” Her relaxed tone sounded gentle as water, carrying the warmth of sunlight as it slowly flowed into Bai Moqing’s heart.
Bai Moqing blushed with embarrassment, looking especially cute. Xiao Xing’s mind went blank for a moment.
She had seen Bai Moqing in many states. Even when Bai Moqing was embarrassed, Xiao Xing had seen many kinds of it. But this look in front of her was the first time.
“President Xiao, if there is nothing else, I will go out now.” Under President Xiao’s focused gaze, Bai Moqing’s heart beat faster and faster. If she did not leave soon, she felt she might drop dead right in front of Xiao Xing.
Xiao Xing said, “Mm. There is nothing else.”
As if granted a great pardon, Bai Moqing quickly left. Her steps were a little flustered. Xiao Xing kept watching her from behind. When Bai Moqing’s hand landed on the door handle, Xiao Xing reminded her, “Do not forget dinner tonight. After work, wait for me in the office.”
Bai Moqing walked out of the office. Tang Yue’s office door also opened, and Sister An came out with her chin high, completely different from her listless state before she went in.
Bai Moqing could not help wondering what had happened inside. Seeing Sister An lift her neck like a rooster that had won a fight, Bai Moqing wondered if she had beaten Assistant Tang up.
On the way back to her office, Bai Moqing seemed to glance into Tang Yue’s office by accident. Tang Yue was leaning against the chair back with a meaningful smile on her face. She did not look defeated at all.
Both of them were acting strange.
An Huaigu leaned sideways against the desk, took a nail clipper out of her bag, and began trimming her nails. Bai Moqing looked at her and felt that she looked especially like a little orange cat right now.
Every time the little orange cat wanted to do something bad, it would show its claws and scratch the carpet at home, sharpening its nails.
Seeing Bai Moqing look at her with curiosity, An Huaigu raised her brows in a charming way. She lifted her claws and asked, “Little Bai, look. How did I trim my nails? Are they sharp enough?”
Bai Moqing nodded. Looking at Sister An’s eyes, she was afraid Sister An was preparing to scratch someone.
“Hmph.” An Huaigu snorted and glanced toward the opposite office. The next time Tang Yue dared touch her butt, it would not be as simple as pushing her away. At the very least, she would scratch Tang Yue’s face twice.
When it was time to get off work, Bai Moqing, who usually left on time, stayed seated. An Huaigu packed her things, leaned over Bai Moqing’s desk, and asked, “Little Bai, work is over. Why are you not leaving? Do you want me to take you home?”
Bai Moqing shook her head. “No need.” She did not tell An Huaigu that she was having dinner with President Xiao tonight.
“Do not be shy, Little Bai. We have known each other for so long. Just let this big sister drive you once.” Every time An Huaigu saw Bai Moqing’s obedient little face, she especially wanted to touch it.
Tang Yue walked to the doorway and saw An Huaigu leaning on the desk with her bottom raised, teasing Bai Moqing. Her heart swayed. She knocked on the door and said, “Assistant An, let us have dinner together tonight.”
Hearing Tang Yue’s voice, An Huaigu’s smile vanished at once. She turned back with a look of disgust. “I do not have time to eat with you.” Then she turned back to Bai Moqing with another gentle smile.
Tang Yue walked into the office. “It is with President Xiao. We are accompanying clients for dinner.”
“Then I still do not have time.” Sensing Tang Yue approach, An Huaigu turned and showed her claws.
Tang Yue’s gaze swept over An Huaigu’s chest and hands. She took one step back to put distance between them, then looked past An Huaigu at Bai Moqing. “Little Bai, are you ready? If you are, we will go down first.”
We? An Huaigu turned to look at Bai Moqing. “You are having dinner with them?” Bai Moqing nodded. An Huaigu immediately changed her mind. “Why did you not say so earlier? If you are going, of course I have to go. I have to protect you. Otherwise, who knows when some pervert might bully you.”
She slanted a glance at Tang Yue. The pervert in her mouth was obviously Tang Yue.
As if she did not hear An Huaigu’s pointed words, Tang Yue kept smiling. “Little Bai, are you ready?”
You want to ride with Little Bai? No way!
An Huaigu raised her brows and said, “Tell me the address. I will drive Little Bai there.”
“Huaigu, ride in Tang Yue’s car. There will be drinking tonight.” Xiao Xing appeared at the doorway and said in a tone that allowed no argument, “I will drive Bai Moqing there.”
An Huaigu would rather walk than ride in Tang Yue’s car. In the end, she shamelessly squeezed into Xiao Xing’s car and dragged Bai Moqing into the back seat, sitting close beside her.
All the way there, An Huaigu did not quiet down once.
Xiao Xing glanced at the rearview mirror. An Huaigu was all smiles and charm, leaning in front of Bai Moqing and talking nonstop. She told several jokes that made Bai Moqing laugh. Once she saw the little beauty smile, An Huaigu also laughed happily and even leaned onto Bai Moqing’s shoulder.
Xiao Xing had the urge to throw An Huaigu out.
Her foot pressed down. She stepped on the gas and sped forward. An Huaigu stumbled and fell into Bai Moqing’s arms.
“A-Xing, why are you driving so fast?” It was rush hour, and there were many cars on the road. Driving this fast made it easy to hit another car.
Xiao Xing glanced coldly at An Huaigu. “If you think it is fast, you can get out and walk there.”
“Wow, A-Xing, you can even tell cold jokes now!” An Huaigu stayed in Bai Moqing’s arms and did not get up.
Xiao Xing gripped the steering wheel, pressing down a nameless anger. She did not answer An Huaigu. Her gaze shifted to Bai Moqing. Bai Moqing happened to lift her head and look at the rearview mirror. Their gazes met in the mirror.
Bai Moqing’s back went cold. She quickly pushed An Huaigu away. “Sister An, sit properly.” Then she moved closer to the door, avoiding the rearview mirror and putting distance between herself and An Huaigu.
Jing Tianzong was already waiting in the private room. On his right sat Xiang Junnan and two assistants. On his left sat his younger sister, Jing Tianmu.
They were drinking tea and chatting when the private room door was pushed open. Jing Tianzong lifted his head and saw a group of beautiful women come in. His eyes lit up, and his heart floated at once.
On his side, except for his younger sister, everyone was male. But the women President Xiao brought with her were all tall, long-legged, slim-waisted, finely made up, and handsome-faced. All of them were great beauties pleasing to the eye.
After everyone sat down, Jing Tianzong finally noticed that two men had followed in at the end. One of them was Wen Xiuming. His expression instantly became a little unpleasant. Perhaps because Wen Xiuming had looked at Jing Tianmu a few extra times, Jing Tianzong, as an older brother, now found him unpleasant no matter how he looked at him.
When the banquet began, President Xiao exchanged a few polite words, then gave Wen Rushui a look. The Wen siblings immediately went over to toast the guests.
Bai Moqing now believed that Xiao Xing had not insisted on making her a secretary because she could hold her liquor. With Secretary Wen and Manager Wen, two wine gods who drank white liquor like water, where would there still be room for her to show her skills?
Halfway through the banquet, several people from Jingke were drunk. The wine in Xiao Xing’s glass had been changed to water after she took a few sips at the start. She drank it slowly while watching Jing Tianzong and Wen Rushui compete in drinking.
An Huaigu saw that Tang Yue had not drunk a single drop of wine from beginning to end. Her little eyes spun, and she poured a full glass of red wine before handing it over. “Assistant Tang, you have worked hard these past two days. I toast you.”
Tang Yue glanced at her, picked up the white porcelain teacup beside her hand, and said, “I cannot drink. I will use tea instead of wine.” Without waiting for An Huaigu to say more words to urge her, she tilted her head back and drank the tea in one gulp.
“No fun.” An Huaigu rolled her eyes at Tang Yue in disgust, took a sip of red wine, and turned to look at Bai Moqing.
Bai Moqing sat beside Xiao Xing, quietly eating. She felt a hot gaze on her face and followed it. An Huaigu seemed to receive a signal to attack and immediately leaned over. “Little Bai, we have known each other for so long. Come drink a glass with me.”
Afraid Bai Moqing would copy Assistant Tang and muddle through with tea, An Huaigu stuffed the glass of red wine she had just drunk from into Bai Moqing’s hand without another word, then poured herself another glass.
Clink. The walls of the glasses struck each other with a clear sound, splashing a few drops of red wine. An Huaigu looked at Bai Moqing with ill intent and smiled. “Little Bai, bottoms up.”
Under Xiao Xing’s gaze, cold as river water, Bai Moqing finished the red wine in the goblet.
There was still An Huaigu’s lip print on the rim of that goblet, right beside where Bai Moqing’s lips touched. From Xiao Xing’s angle, Bai Moqing’s lips and the lip print overlapped.
“Who lowered the air conditioner? Why did it suddenly get cold?” The drunk Jing Tianzong felt the chill and shivered. In a drunken daze, he shouted wildly, “Waiter, turn the air conditioner back up!”
Everyone’s attention was drawn by Jing Tianzong’s sudden loss of composure. Xiao Xing grabbed Bai Moqing’s wrist and, with a cold face, pulled her into the private room’s restroom.
