By the time they returned to the company, it was already noon.
Looking at Xiao Xing’s cold, serious side profile, Bai Moqing swallowed the words “I want to go home first” just as they reached her lips.
After getting out of the car, she carried the document bag and followed behind Xiao Xing. Xiao Xing’s back was straight, and her black hair was twisted into a bun at the back of her head, revealing a smooth, fair neck.
Just looking at her from behind, one could feel the aura of a strong woman.
Bai Moqing was staring in a daze at the back of Xiao Xing’s neck when the woman ahead suddenly turned around. Xiao Xing’s eyes were indifferent, as if she had not noticed Bai Moqing’s gaze. She reached out. “Give me the bag.”
“Mm?” Bai Moqing paused, then quickly handed the bag to Xiao Xing.
Xiao Xing took the bag and, without a word, turned toward the elevator. Bai Moqing did not understand what she meant. After hesitating, she still followed.
The elevator had already been on the first floor. As soon as the button was pressed, ding, the doors opened.
Xiao Xing lifted her leg and entered, turning to face the doors. Bai Moqing followed her in. Xiao Xing glanced at her but said nothing.
When the doors closed and the elevator slowly rose, Xiao Xing lightly breathed four words. “You’re not going home?”
Going home? So when President Xiao took the bag just now, she meant Bai Moqing did not need to follow?
Why did she wait until the elevator was going up to say it!
“I…” Bai Moqing had just said one word when Xiao Xing smiled faintly at her. “Since you don’t want to go home, follow me upstairs.” She gave Bai Moqing no chance to change her words.
The elevator soon reached the top floor. Bai Moqing turned sideways to let President Xiao leave first, then stepped out after her.
Passing the assistant’s office, Bai Moqing looked through the glass wall in surprise and discovered that Assistant Tang was actually sitting inside, eyes fixed on the computer screen, both hands clacking away on the keyboard.
Assistant Tang was truly dedicated. She came to the company even on Sunday.
Xiao Xing opened the office door, glanced at Bai Moqing, and walked in.
The bag contained documents brought back from the branch company. Xiao Xing walked behind the desk, sat down, took out all the documents, flipped through them, and pulled one out.
It was a lake-blue folder. A printed label was clipped to the side spine, and on it were the words Import and Export Trade.
Opening the folder, Xiao Xing habitually uncapped her fountain pen and placed a stack of blank paper beside her. As she read, she made notes on the white paper.
Bai Moqing entered the office. Seeing Xiao Xing already seated and busy, she lightened her steps and walked up to her, quietly watching across the desk.
President Xiao looked very charming when she was serious. Her left hand turned the pages. Her right hand held the fountain pen. Her focused gaze fell on the documents, as if the rest of the world had nothing to do with her.
After an unknown length of time, Xiao Xing’s phone rang. Xiao Xing stopped writing and glanced at the screen. It was An Huaigu calling.
Bai Moqing, standing before the desk, saw it too. Since Sister An was calling, she thought it would be better to avoid it. Sensibly, she turned to leave.
“Bai Moqing.”
Xiao Xing called her, signaling for her to stay, then answered An Huaigu’s call.
Bai Moqing did not want to listen, but her ears were too good. Every word An Huaigu said entered her ears.
“All right. I will go.” Xiao Xing hung up, raised her head, looked at Bai Moqing, and said, “Let’s eat together tonight.”
Bai Moqing was surprised. “Aren’t you eating with Sister An?”
“You come too.” Xiao Xing lowered her head and continued reading.
“That doesn’t seem very appropriate. You two are going on a date…”
“It is not a date.” Xiao Xing looked up at Bai Moqing. Seeing the expression on her face, rejection mixed with a trace of hesitation and curiosity, she said, “Her younger sister will be there too.”
Knock, knock, knock. A knock suddenly sounded at the door. Assistant Tang stood at the doorway and said, “President Xiao, the proposal has been revised.”
She was not surprised at all that Bai Moqing was in the president’s office.
“Bring it in.”
After Assistant Tang left, Xiao Xing continued the previous topic. “Dinner tonight is because her younger sister wants to see me.”
That was a lot of information. It was clearly Sister An who had asked President Xiao to dinner, but now she was saying it was Sister An’s younger sister…
Bai Moqing’s heartbeat grew a little disordered. She tentatively asked, “President Xiao, does Sister An’s younger sister… like you?” From only a few words, Bai Moqing accurately caught the key point.
Xiao Xing admitted it without thinking. She opened the revised proposal Tang Yue had brought and said, “So, do you want to come eat with me?”
Bai Moqing understood the meaning in Xiao Xing’s words. Xiao Xing wanted her to be a shield, blocking Sister An’s younger sister’s arrow of love.
She wanted to nod, but reason told Bai Moqing it would be better to refuse. Setting aside Sister An’s younger sister, just Sister An alone… if Sister An saw her and President Xiao appear together…
That scene could not be imagined.
“No, President Xiao. Whether it is Sister An or Sister An’s younger sister, it isn’t convenient for me to go along.” Bai Moqing bowed slightly to Xiao Xing in apology. “There is nothing for me here now. I should go home. I keep a cat at home. If I don’t go back soon, she will go hungry.”
Xiao Xing turned the pen in her hand and was silent for nearly a minute before nodding in agreement.
When Bai Moqing returned home, the little orange cat, collapsed angrily on the sofa, looked at her indifferently and did not even meow.
She was like a different cat.
“Feiyue.” Bai Moqing knew she had broken her promise by not coming back in the morning. She quickly walked to the sofa and undid the seal on Feiyue.
The little orange cat looked listlessly at her, then lay on her side with her head on her paws.
Bai Moqing rubbed the little orange cat’s head and explained, “I was very busy today. I was busy until now before I could come back.”
“Meow.” The little orange cat flicked her tail, tucked herself smaller, curled into a ball, and gave Bai Moqing a look that said, I know. You may now roll away gracefully. She buried her head in her belly and ignored Bai Moqing.
Bai Moqing sat sideways on the sofa and sighed softly, watching the little orange cat from the corner of her eye.
A few days ago, when the little orange cat heard her sigh, she would have curiously asked why. Now, the little orange cat did not even lift her head.
She was truly angry.
Just as Bai Moqing did not know how to coax her, she remembered that there was a jade bead in her storage ring. Cats seemed to like round things most, especially beads containing spiritual energy.
Bai Moqing immediately found the jade bead, nudged the little orange cat, and held her fist before her. “Feiyue, I have something for you.”
The little orange cat flicked her tail without interest and raised her head. “Is it cat food or fish cans?”
Uh. Bai Moqing opened her palm. “This. The Heaven-Mixing Pearl.”
In her palm, a dark red, clear jade bead shone with light. Moon-white spiritual energy also curled around it.
The moment the little orange cat saw the Heaven-Mixing Pearl, she revived. Whoosh, she climbed upright and reached out a paw to grab the bead in Bai Moqing’s hand.
When her paw touched the Heaven-Mixing Pearl, spiritual energy seeped into her soft pink paw pad, bringing a comfortable feeling.
The little orange cat stopped grabbing and instead held it carefully. Then she pressed it to her chest. “Moqing, are you really giving me this bead?”
When a cat smiled, her eyes sparkled. Bai Moqing nodded. “It’s for you.” As soon as she said that, the little orange cat swallowed the bead in one bite.
What kind of operation was this? Bai Moqing stared blankly.
The little orange cat jumped off the sofa and changed into human form. She let out a long, comfortable breath, rubbed her belly with a pleased face, and said, “Moqing, you are so good to me. I ate so much spiritual energy at once. My belly feels swollen.”
Seeing Bai Moqing dazed, Feiyue copied an action she had seen on TV and sat astride Bai Moqing’s lap, hugging her and rubbing against her.
Snap. Xiao Xing broke the fountain pen in her hand and withdrew her divine sense. Many drops of ink splattered onto the white paper.
Faced with the sudden intimacy, Bai Moqing stared blankly for three seconds, then raised her hand and pushed Feiyue away without any tenderness. “Why are you rubbing against me?”
Feiyue fell onto the sofa, rubbed her bumped backside, and looked at Bai Moqing in confusion. “I just wanted to rub against you. Why did you push me away?”
“If I don’t push you away, am I supposed to hold you tight?” Bai Moqing straightened her clothes. Afraid the little orange cat would make another bold, ambiguous move, she stood and returned to her bedroom.
“You should hold me tight…”
Feiyue changed back into the little orange cat, ran to the bedroom door with little taps, scratched at it, and said a large pile of sweet, affectionate words through the door.
Unfortunately, Bai Moqing did not hear a single sentence.
Night soon fell.
Bai Moqing stood by the window, looking at the bright, colorful night scene. Thinking of President Xiao eating with Sister An and the others, she somewhat regretted not going.
In truth, however, Xiao Xing did not eat with An Huaigu.
At five o’clock, Xiao Xing suddenly stood An Huaigu up and went home alone.
In the darkness, Bai Moqing’s phone screen suddenly lit up. She turned and glanced at it. Seeing the name Xiao Xing on the screen, her heartbeat missed a beat.
Why was President Xiao suddenly calling her?
“Hello, President Xiao.” Bai Moqing leaned against the side table, her left hand resting on it as she answered the call. “Are you drunk again?”
“No.” Xiao Xing was standing before the floor-to-ceiling window, looking down at all of H City with lonely, cold eyes. Her voice, cool as a mountain stream yet pleasant to the ear, entered Bai Moqing’s ears. She said, “I did not eat with them tonight.”
“Then…” Bai Moqing did not understand the purpose of this call. The question reached her lips, but she changed it. “Do you want to have dinner together? I haven’t eaten yet.” Her throat tightened, and her heart was uneasy.
“No.” Xiao Xing smiled. “I still have work to do.” Then she hung up.
What did President Xiao mean? Bai Moqing looked at the call history in confusion. Only twenty-six seconds.
She had only wanted Bai Moqing to know she had not eaten with Sister An and the others?
