“The Changyin Pearl is gone?” Mu Yinfeng was startled. Had the Changyin Pearl not always been with Huixue?
Huixue stood on the shore. A row of small objects soaked by the cold spring water had been placed on the ground. Mu Yinfeng could not help being secretly amazed by how many things Huixue carried with her. More importantly, Huixue had carried so many things, yet Mu Yinfeng had never noticed while standing beside her and had never seen Huixue take them out.
“Senior Sister carries this many things?” Mu Yinfeng rose with the wind and jumped from the jade stone in the spring to the shore. “Could it have fallen into the cold spring?”
“No.” Huixue shook her head. Tianbing on her shoulder also shook its head and tail, then suddenly plunged back into the cold spring, splashing Mu Yinfeng with water.
Mu Yinfeng shivered from the cold and hurriedly dried her clothes with spiritual energy. Only then did she discover that her jeweled necklace was also among the items Tianbing had fished up.
This jeweled necklace fell off that easily?
Huixue bent down, holding the jeweled necklace in her hand. She was about to tie it back around Mu Yinfeng’s neck, but her hand stopped one inch away and did not move forward for a long time.
“Yinfeng, I know I may not be able to promise to protect you for life as I did before. I take back what I said that day.” Huixue placed her free hand on Mu Yinfeng’s shoulder. “An innocent person can still be guilty for carrying treasure. What do you plan to do from now on?”
“I will listen to Senior Sister,” Mu Yinfeng said softly. She carefully caught the hand Huixue had placed on her shoulder. She had thought the blood vine might be triggered again, but found that it remained still, as if asleep.
So when she had thoughts, the blood vine did not count it as punishment? Mu Yinfeng thought about it. Did that mean the blood vine would only attack as long as she formed the thought of saying those words to Huixue?
She found Yimu’s purpose harder and harder to guess. Yimu had given her the blood vine and saved her in front of Jian Shu, but after that one time, the blood vine had been useless. Now it had come to punish her, making her forever unable to speak her hidden feelings for Huixue.
“You have already learned the Spirit Gu Control Curse, correct?” Huixue drew her hand out from Mu Yinfeng’s fingers, turned to stand in front of her, and stared into her eyes as she asked.
Mu Yinfeng nodded. If Huixue still kept the memories from before and after her sea of consciousness had been controlled, then it was not hard to figure this out.
“You could use the Yin Charm Art to charm Elder Shu Ji. That means your mental power cultivation has already reached a very good level.” Huixue smiled faintly. “It seems I underestimated you.”
Mu Yinfeng felt there was something hidden in Huixue’s words. “What do you mean?”
“Nothing.” Huixue blinked. “Yinfeng, do you really want the Changyin Pearl?”
“I…” Mu Yinfeng bit her lower lip, unsure how to continue.
She did indeed want the Changyin Pearl very much. If she obtained it, her cultivation would at least make a major leap, and her mental power would rise further along with her cultivation. At that time, she might even have a chance to attempt the final form of the Severing Love sword art, which even Lord Lanfeng had failed to cultivate.
Although she did not know why Lord Lanfeng valued that form so highly, she felt it was better to follow that path. The Severing Love sword art required far more mental power than spiritual energy cultivation. It was a rare divine sword art that focused on mental cultivation. If she could truly cultivate it, she could control herself better. After all, even if the heavenly prophecy descended and ordered her to act, as long as she stayed still, who could force her to do anything?
But when she faced Huixue, she pushed that restless thought back down. She knew Huixue did not want her to keep cultivating this extreme yin art. Even if her mental power cultivation was very high, and even if she was less likely to lose reason and control than others who took risks cultivating extreme yin arts, Mu Yinfeng still could not be sure she could forever keep her actions within reason.
“The Spirit Gu Control Curse requires extremely high mental cultivation. If you can control the Spirit Gu Control Curse, then I think you should be able to control the Changyin Pearl.” Huixue said softly, “I did not expect you to be so fast…”
She let the end of the sentence fade into a sigh. She clearly remembered that in her last life, Mu Yinfeng had learned the Spirit Gu Control Curse after coming of age, during several years of closed-door cultivation after she killed Chang Zui. Back then, the Changyin Pearl had also supported Mu Yinfeng from the side. She had not expected that now, Mu Yinfeng already had the strength to grasp the Spirit Gu Control Curse.
But what shocked her most was not how quickly Mu Yinfeng had grasped the Spirit Gu Control Curse. Such monsters did exist in the cultivation world. A thousand years ago, Princess Liuguang of the ancient Yongyue Kingdom and Jian Ning, one of the founding sages of the ancient Yongri Kingdom, both cultivated at monstrous speed. Those two had inherited the positions of the Star Lords of Great Yin and Sun. Mu Yinfeng carried Severing Love, possessed a blessed primordial yin body, and had a godhead protecting her. These things were not strange.
What shocked Huixue was that Mu Yinfeng had charmed Elder Shu Ji.
Shu Ji guarded Langhuan Pavilion and had always ranked fiftieth on Guiyuan Tower’s cultivator ranking. Her rank had stayed fixed for decades. Rising in rank might mean rising strength, but being able to keep the same rank without moving for so long could only mean Shu Ji’s true strength was far above her current place. For some reason, she simply did not want her rank to rise.
How could such a powerful person easily fall under Mu Yinfeng’s Yin Charm Art? And even if she did fall under it, she should not have been completely unable to resist and handed over the scroll of the Spirit Gu Control Curse so easily…
There were only two possibilities. First, Mu Yinfeng’s mental power had already far surpassed Shu Ji’s, making Shu Ji truly unable to withstand her. Second, Shu Ji had intentionally given way to Mu Yinfeng.
Subjectively, Huixue leaned more toward the second. But rationally, she felt the first was far more likely. The Spirit Gu Control Curse was an art infinitely close to a forbidden technique. Shu Ji was an old hand of Langhuan Pavilion and guarded this art very strictly. Anyone whose mind was even slightly unsteady would suffer heavenly punishment after cultivating it. Yet Mu Yinfeng showed nothing unusual now.
Perhaps this was also Mu Yinfeng’s own opportunity. Huixue could not control all of Mu Yinfeng’s opportunities. What belonged to her would belong to her in the end. Thinking this, Huixue pressed one hand to Liufei at her waist and turned her face slightly aside. The smile at the corner of her lips gradually became strained and cold.
If Mu Yinfeng brought disaster to all living beings like in her last life, Huixue would not be soft-hearted this time. Even if she had to sacrifice herself to Liufei to obtain the Snow God’s divine power and die, she could not let Mu Yinfeng throw the world into chaos.
The current Mu Yinfeng was already beyond her control. She could not truly control Mu Yinfeng for a lifetime. Sooner or later, Mu Yinfeng’s strength would surpass hers. Letting the cultivation world lose such a genius, or rather, such a god, was not wise.
Now she had already seen things clearly. Blindly controlling Mu Yinfeng was useless. It was better to return everything that belonged to Mu Yinfeng and let her act freely, to see how far she could go.
“Yinfeng, come down the mountain with me. I know where the Changyin Pearl is,” Huixue said slowly.
“Where?”
“Chengchen Peak.”
Chengchen Peak was where Hanyou Valley’s medicine cultivators gathered. Any random, plain-looking place might be growing extremely rare herbs, and any weed-like thing might be a precious treasure. Mu Yinfeng walked carefully, as if treading on thin ice, afraid she would step on something and be hunted down by all the senior sisters and brothers on Chengchen Peak.
Because Chengchen Peak was far too large, she and Huixue split up. Each searched one side of Chengchen Peak. When she heard Huixue say this, Mu Yinfeng felt a little surprised, but before she could ask more, Huixue had already vanished into the vast medicinal forest.
Mu Yinfeng looked at the thick grass and mountain forest around her and sighed. She had no idea where to begin looking for the Changyin Pearl.
According to Huixue, most of the spiritual artifacts on her body had seals she used to hide their auras. The only exceptions were Tianbing and Liufei, because their auras hid themselves. Other than Huixue, no one could undo the seals. If someone tried to break them by force, the items inside would be destroyed at the same time.
But clearly, the Changyin Pearl could not be destroyed casually. It had belonged to the Butterfly Goddess back then. How could it be destroyed so easily?
That single fact directly ruled out her method of searching with mental power. Along the way, she could only flip through grass and move stones everywhere. Although she knew this was useless work, she still could not let go of any possible chance, right?
After walking for more than one shichen, Mu Yinfeng had not seen even the shadow of the Changyin Pearl. Her legs were a little sore, so she sat down on a green stone. Sitting on a stone should not cause any trouble, right?
“Stop stepping there! If you step on any more, selling you would not be enough to pay for it!” A sharp young voice came by her ear. Mu Yinfeng instinctively looked toward the sound and saw a green-clothed young woman leaning against a tree and watching her. Her almond eyes were wide, and she looked so angry she might eat Mu Yinfeng on the spot.
“Senior Sister Abi?” Mu Yinfeng recognized the young woman and sprang to her feet to greet her. But then she suddenly felt a cold wind pass over her head. Before she could react, a large net fell over her head and trapped her inside.
“Junior Sister Yinfeng?” Abi was also startled when she saw Mu Yinfeng. “Why did you come to Chengchen Peak for no reason?”
“I just, well…” Mu Yinfeng struggled out of the net and explained the whole story to Abi.
“You say you came to Chengchen Peak to look for something?” Abi covered her mouth and giggled. “Then just come with me. I know where that thing is.”
Why do all of you know? Mu Yinfeng sighed inwardly. What exactly was hidden on Chengchen Peak?
Abi led Mu Yinfeng to a spring. She pulled Mu Yinfeng down into a crouch, and Abi crouched as well. The thick grass hid both of their figures. The fragrance of fresh grass was soothing, and mixed within it was a thin, sweet scent. This smell was somewhat familiar.
“What are we doing?”
“Do not make a sound.” Abi smiled mysteriously and lowered her voice. “You will know soon.”
Mu Yinfeng did not understand, but she still followed Abi’s instructions, lightening her breathing and hiding her aura. Only then did she realize that Huixue had taken back the jeweled necklace. She had no choice but to focus on preventing her extreme yin energy from leaking out.
“How much longer?” Mu Yinfeng closed her eyes. Not seeing the surroundings could stop her emotions from changing, which made hiding her aura a little easier.
“Soon, soon. It will come right away.” Abi forced down her laughter. “This thing never learns. The thing you lost was probably stolen by it too. Its paws are white enough, but they are not clean.”
“What thing?” Mu Yinfeng asked curiously.
“You will like it.” Abi seemed to remember something and tried hard to hold back her laughter. “At most one stick of incense. Then you will know. This time, maybe I can properly strip the fur from its tail.”
Mu Yinfeng could only press down her curiosity and hold her breath. Sure enough, before one stick of incense had passed, she suddenly heard something fall, followed by a scream. After that scream, Abi burst into laughter.
“What is it? What is it?” Mu Yinfeng rubbed her eyes and looked at Abi. “What happened that made you laugh so hard?”
“I am laughing because this thing still has not learned its lesson.” Abi laughed and pulled up the golden thread beside her. From the spring’s other side came the rustle of plants. Before long, a golden net rose into the air. Inside the net, a white-furred fox stretched its paws and kicked its legs, struggling with all its might. But no matter what it did, it could not break free.
“This is…”
A fox?
To be honest, this was Mu Yinfeng’s first time seeing such a beautiful fox. Its soft fur was fluffy and shone with golden light under the sun. The golden net did not seem like a restraint, but more like an ornament that belonged to it. Most beautiful of all were its eyes. Its gaze flowed, full of charm and sweetness, as if water might drip from them at any time.
So cute!
Mu Yinfeng had no resistance to cute animals. She could not help going forward and poking the fox’s fur. The fox screamed in anger, as if it had suffered some great insult. It leaned over to bite her, but Mu Yinfeng dodged quickly. It could only curl up in the net with a huff and glare fiercely at Abi.
“White-furred fox, I was wondering why I had not seen you for so many days. So you still have not changed and came to steal Treasure-Light Glazed Fruit again.” Abi walked over and looked at the leaves the fox’s paws had clawed all over the ground. Without mercy, she picked up a branch from the ground and poked the fox’s backside with it. “Keep eating. Keep eating. Now you have been caught, have you not?”
The white-furred fox screamed and actually spoke human words. “Great lady, I only came to steal a few Treasure-Light Glazed Grasses, and you treat me like this? I have not come for almost half a year, right? This is not even anything good–”
Those words directly touched Abi’s sore spot. Abi lifted the golden net and was about to dunk it into the spring. The white-furred fox was so frightened it no longer dared talk back and kept begging for mercy.
“Are you still saying that? How many times have you come?”
As she spoke, Abi turned back to explain to Mu Yinfeng, “This fox has always lived on Chengchen Peak. It stole and ate medicinal herbs until it gained intelligence. It is greedy too, and it has ruined quite a few Treasure-Light Glazed Grasses. There is no medicine cultivator on Chengchen Peak who does not see it as a thorn in their eye.”
Mu Yinfeng had never heard this name before. “Treasure-Light Glazed Grass?”
“It is the grass under your feet. Junior Sister Yinfeng, be careful. Do not step on it and ruin it.” The moment Treasure-Light Glazed Grass came up, Abi’s expression changed. “If you ruin it, I will throw you under Frostfall Cliff to keep this greedy fox company!”
Then Abi went back to questioning the fox. For a while, the fox’s miserable begging filled Mu Yinfeng’s ears.
Mu Yinfeng bent down and looked at the Treasure-Light Glazed Grass the fox had ruined. The leaves were green all over, but from another angle, faint colorful light could be seen flowing across them, brilliant and dazzling. Under some leaves grew several fruits. The fruits were much brighter in color, with flowing light like strings of hanging gems, and they gave off a unique, tempting fragrance.
“I really did not steal any Treasure-Light Glazed Fruit last week. At that time last week, I was… I was somewhere else!” the fox shouted in protest. Abi accusing it of stealing last month was simply an insult to its dignity. “I spent weeks crouching there before I finally stole that thing. How could I come steal your Treasure-Light Glazed Fruit? I did not have time! If you do not believe me, you can go ask around. But let me say this first. If you wrong me, you have to send me a whole cart of Treasure-Light Glazed Fruit to apologize!”
“Dream on!”
Treasure-Light Glazed Grass lost last week…
A small jade box suddenly flashed before Mu Yinfeng’s eyes. Inside the jade box, treasure light had flowed, dazzling with color. At the same time, a faint sweet liquid seemed to pass through her mouth. It was exactly the fragrance of Treasure-Light Glazed Fruit.
