“My Lord.”
Li Lingjiang was pushed onto a chair. Hearing that call, she knew things were not good. Fifteen had left after speaking, and before she could think over what he meant, Yin Wu had almost forcefully carried her back.
The young immortal crouched before her and threw down two swords. They landed on the ground with a clang. The two dragons tactfully hid themselves. Li Lingjiang lowered her eyes and tucked the loose hair by Yin Wu’s cheeks behind her ears. “What is wrong?”
Asking when she knew the answer was what made people angriest.
Yin Wu suddenly stood, clearly pressing down anger. In the next second, Li Lingjiang held her hand. In truth, the force was not heavy. Yin Wu could break free with a light wave, but she still obediently turned around and crouched before Li Lingjiang again, resting her head on Li Lingjiang’s legs.
She warmed her hands, chose her force carefully, and massaged Li Lingjiang’s wrist.
“You really are…” Someone who left her with no options.
Yin Wu asked, “Why do you not know how to refuse? You are the one who suffers. You are the one who hurts.”
Li Lingjiang’s fingertip brushed Yin Wu’s face. She laughed softly. “Yin Wu, if I avoid it this time, there will be a next time. It is better to make a quick decision. Ada Danni’s sudden change in nature cannot be separated from the people here, and the targeting is so obvious. I cannot avoid it.”
“I know your heart aches for me, but I truly am fine. The pain was already endured back then. Now I almost feel nothing.”
Li Lingjiang held Yin Wu’s face and kissed the tip of her nose.
She could feel Yin Wu’s strangely disordered, suppressed aura. The sky outside had fully darkened, and the room darkened with it. It was dull, so dull Li Lingjiang felt an indescribable irritation in her heart, even though they had not been together for long.
Li Lingjiang touched foreheads with Yin Wu. “Yin Wu, you have changed a lot.”
Yin Wu took a deep breath, gave a low hum, and said, “People always change. I have only become stronger.”
She lifted the corner of her lips. “Does My Lord like me crying? Or do you like me acting spoiled?”
Li Lingjiang also smiled. “It is all you. I like all of it. I only feel that you are hiding something in your heart.”
If one was not careful, it was very easy for Yin Wu to shut her outside. It felt a little suffocating.
Yin Wu leaned forward and hugged her. Her voice was muffled through the clothes. “When there is a chance, I will tell you everything. Wait for me.”
Li Lingjiang lowered her head and looked at Yin Wu’s hair. She turned slightly and lit the candle. The faint spark could not brighten much, yet it wrapped the two of them completely. She heard herself say, “All right.”
What happened afterward, Li Lingjiang did not remember clearly. After several days of forcing herself to hold on, the backlash finally came. Her whole body was weak in a way she could not describe, and that inevitably made her uneasy. She half opened her eyes and touched the bed beside her, which had not grown warm. Only then did she feel a little sense of reality.
Li Lingjiang coughed dully. Facing the wall, she curled up, thoughts scattering. She did feel something was wrong. Her body kept swinging between good and bad, wearing away too much of her energy. It was too strange.
A familiar aura suddenly came from behind. Li Lingjiang closed her eyes and turned over. In the next instant, someone hugged her fully. Her earlobe was kissed, a little hot.
“Since My Lord is awake, get up and drink medicine. These past few days, I neglected you and did not urge you. When did you start feeling unwell?”
Yin Wu still breathed in relief. At the time, Li Lingjiang had answered her and tried to stand, but before she could steady herself, she had lost consciousness. Yin Wu had checked. There was no problem with her heart meridian or anything else. It was the old issue left from before. It had probably been hurting these past few days, but because the pain was not strong, this person had not told her.
The marks she had placed on Li Lingjiang had activated the blood bead and fused with it. After a few more months of nourishing, Li Lingjiang should almost fully recover. Yin Wu only did not know whether they could wait until then.
Li Lingjiang rested her head against Yin Wu’s chest and buried it lower. Half a beast ear showed outside and moved slightly. In the next second, she was pulled out. Her face was forcefully lifted, and her lips were kissed again. “I will wait a while…”
“Wait for what?” Yin Wu blocked her words and brought over the medicine bowl. With two light taps of her fingers, the candle lit. Wind had risen outside, bringing a chill. “My Lord, drink the medicine now. Do not wait.”
Yin Wu leaned close and stared at Li Lingjiang, her tone threatening. “I do not want to feed you mouth to mouth.”
Before, when Li Lingjiang had lost her sense of taste and still kept some distance, she could at least swallow it all in one breath. Recently, drinking medicine had become much more troublesome. Yin Wu always had to catch her and torment her a little, coaxing and threatening before forcing her to take it.
Yin Wu could not bear to say anything harsher, so she only threatened Li Lingjiang like this.
Li Lingjiang sat up. The quilt slid from her shoulder. Her collar was a little open, faintly revealing the hollow of her shoulder and several bluish marks. Her hair fell across her chest, fully covering two places. She took a deep breath, and her chest moved with it. Yin Wu silently turned her head aside.
“All right, My Lord. Do not wait.” Yin Wu handed the bowl over and said softly, “Once your body is better, will you not be able to…”
Li Lingjiang expressionlessly covered her mouth. As if she had done a long mental preparation, she took the bowl and drank it in one breath. She choked twice, shoved the bowl back forcefully, then pulled up the quilt and lay down again with her back to Yin Wu.
Yin Wu found it funny. She bent down and held Li Lingjiang’s earlobe between her lips. With her free hand, she rubbed the beast ear, teasing until Li Lingjiang could not help pushing her away. “Enough. Stop teasing me.”
The young immortal stopped at the right point. She wiped away the wetness on the earlobe, put the bowl away, and wrapped her arms around Li Lingjiang’s waist. The two pressed close together. Yin Wu rubbed against the person in her arms. “I asked Lord Ling Xin just now. The ceremony Fifteen mentioned is a worship held by the Immortal-Entering Sect every ten days. No one knows exactly who they worship, but according to them, they receive a blessing from a heavenly god and increase their strength.”
Li Lingjiang’s eyes were closed. “Superstition.”
Yin Wu gave a hum. “Everyone wants to become immortal. In truth, immortals are not as miraculous as legends say.”
She changed the topic. “There is also Ada Danni. I asked around indirectly among the other trial participants, but none could explain clearly. Judging by her desire to use your body to serve gu insects and the way she directly sought out Duan Wuxiu, she should already be cultivating the demonic path. As for what the process was, I do not know.”
“In any case, guarding against her cannot be wrong.” Yin Wu squeezed Li Lingjiang’s hand. “You attract too many people.”
Li Lingjiang laughed. She shrank farther inward. “If they were all good things, that would be fine. Why make things difficult for me like this?”
Yin Wu had just wanted to answer when her gaze stopped. Both of them looked warily toward the window. They had set a small barrier around the courtyard. It was not brilliant, but enough against these people. At the very least, outside voices could not be heard, and movement could not be seen.
The window seemed to be hit by something heavy, again and again. The roaring wind made a sharp sound. A voice floated out from somewhere.
“My lover and I share life and death…”
“Wedding robe, red wedding robe…”
Li Lingjiang stared cautiously at the window. The movement outside was someone singing opera. The wild wind could not scatter the tragic notes raised again and again. Fifteen had said this was Duan Wuxiu.
The window suddenly shook hard. The candle’s shadow stretched long and twisted on the wall. The whole room flashed with light. The opera seemed to grow thicker.
“Mother wants my clothes, my lover wants my heart. It hurts, it hurts. Why does each cut fall on me?”
“Red wedding robe, ghost bride, wearing a veil to be married…”
Crack.
The sound stopped abruptly. A hole broke in the window. A black shadow struggled to twist its body. The instant it rose into the air, red thread strangled and broke it apart. Yin Wu frowned impatiently. “It is Ada Danni’s gu insect.”
“I will go down and look.” Yin Wu put on her shoes. “What kind of ghost opera is this? I have never heard it.”
She had just picked up the broken gu insect and was about to rise when her body suddenly froze. Her breath stopped for an instant. She sharply turned her head toward the window. The hole was not large, but it was filled by a black eye. The window was once again battered by the wind until it seemed unable to hold. A deathly pale face almost pressed against the paper.
“Ghost bride, needs a replacement, needs a replacement. Blood drips down from the sedan. Who is it…”
That eye smiled strangely. A piercing voice rang out loudly. “Here, here!”
Yin Wu stood still with a tight face and silently watched. Her finger curled slightly, and flame instantly swallowed the black shadow outside. A foul smell spread. Her expression was truly not good. Meeting Li Lingjiang’s searching gaze, she could not help cursing softly. “So disgusting.”
Li Lingjiang could not see it. She only felt the opera was too dark and made her scalp numb. She frowned. “Why would Duan Wuxiu sing this?”
“Duan Wuxiu?” Yin Wu laughed coldly. “The moment I turned my head, there was an eye. I nearly lost control and rushed out to fight.”
Her fingers moved, and she once again set a boundary around the place. Then she darted back under the quilt. The gu insect had long since turned to dust in her hand. She hugged Li Lingjiang tightly. “It was a black shadow, used as a substitute. Duan Wuxiu is purely trying to disgust people.”
“My Lord.” Yin Wu suddenly sounded wronged. She breathed deeply against Li Lingjiang’s neck. “So scary.”
Li Lingjiang was silent.
She did not expose the young immortal and only patted her back silently. If Yin Wu was truly scared, why had she looked as if she wanted to cut the other party into pieces?
Yin Wu thought of something and clicked her tongue unhappily. “What does Duan Wuxiu mean by this? Must he look for trouble? He clearly had Fifteen mention this matter, yet he still did it on purpose. It is revolting.”
Li Lingjiang also felt somewhat uncomfortable. No one liked having their window pierced and being watched in the middle of the night. She closed her eyes. “Patch the window later. After dawn, they will probably give us an excuse. Since it was only a shadow and not a real person, they can push the blame anywhere.”
The young immortal gave a low hum. She put out the candlelight and fumbled in the dark to kiss Li Lingjiang. But thinking of Ada Danni’s gu insect and that eye, half her strength slipped away.
Yin Wu released her hold on Li Lingjiang’s hand. Under Li Lingjiang’s confused gaze, she wrapped her properly in the quilt and explained with a serious face, “My Lord, your body has not fully recovered. It is late. You are very sleepy.”
Li Lingjiang was silent.
She paused for a few seconds, then suddenly understood what Yin Wu meant. She said faintly, “Yin Wu, are you…”
She stopped halfway, then sighed and turned her back to Yin Wu. She successfully felt Yin Wu’s body stiffen. In the dark, Li Lingjiang curved her lips and laughed softly.
