The Demon Venerable Is Delicate and Charming (GL) Chapter 39

Chapter 39

Before anyone noticed, dawn had come. Yin Wu insisted on putting up Li Lingjiang’s hair no matter what. She tried hard to prove her skill. “My Lord, you look better with your hair pinned up.”
Li Lingjiang leaned back a little. “No need. Why must I look that good?”
She lifted her eyes slightly to look at Yin Wu. In the middle of the night, she had given her answer. First, she had unnaturally pulled her leg back. Then she looked at the firelight that was nearly out and said very softly, “You have said that many times.”
The young immortal had smiled then and nodded openly. “But every time carries a different meaning.”
Yin Wu had moved a little closer. “My Lord, some words only carve into the heart after they are said many times.”
Li Lingjiang held back the memory. She hooked the hair scattered over her cheeks and rubbed it carefully, only then realizing it had turned completely white. She was only a little over two thousand four hundred years old, yet she had a body like a lamp running out of oil.
“Pin it up simply,” Li Lingjiang said, letting go of her hair. In the end, she did not refuse. She even obediently turned her back and let Yin Wu work.
The young immortal was very skilled. Li Lingjiang did not feel any discomfort before her hair was already done. The style was not complicated, but it made her whole person look much more energetic. The hair on both sides of her face had been tucked behind her ears. Li Lingjiang pressed the back of her hand to her cheek.
Yin Wu looked at Li Lingjiang with satisfaction. She made a water mirror that reflected Li Lingjiang’s face, though not very clearly. The person in the mirror wore no makeup and carried a plain elegance. The tightly bound black robe and white hair stood in sharp contrast, and under that strong impact, one could still feel the gentleness in her bones.
“My Lord, does it look good?”
Li Lingjiang did not say yes or no. Supporting herself, she stood and instead asked, “Did I not look good before?”
Yin Wu smiled and tugged Li Lingjiang’s robe corner. “Of course not. My Lord was born very beautiful.”
Li Lingjiang gently tugged her sleeve back. “Let us go. It is time to set out.”
The road outside could already be seen clearly. As soon as the two went out, they heard Tang Wusuo vividly recounting the charm demon encounter. He had eaten the most fruit last night, and some people had not understood what had happened before it ended, so they asked him to tell the story.
At this moment, he knocked a stone on the ground, and he truly looked a little like a storyteller.
“At the time, I was half asleep, and I faintly heard someone humming by my ear. That little tune made my whole body go weak. Who am I? I calculated with my little finger and thought, tsk, something is wrong. I half opened my eyes and saw a woman in revealing clothes twisting in front of me. That scene was extremely tempting. But-”
Tang Wusuo looked proud. “I withstood the temptation. I ignored it. Then I found the right moment, rolled up, and immediately went to call for help…”
Li Lingjiang looked at the four people sitting beside him with full attention and felt that if they had a plate of melon seeds, they could probably listen all day.
Wuzhi kept nodding at the side, even though he knew that, with almost no light at the time, Tang Wusuo had grabbed him and trembled with weak knees while crying, “Heavens, there is a woman in front of me. So scary!”
They had kept watch last night. They had originally planned to solve it silently together. Who knew Tang Wusuo would wake halfway and make the matter larger?
Yin Wu coughed at the right time, cutting off Tang Wusuo’s excited narration. She teased, “Why do I not help you find them again so you can reenact it?”
“That…” Tang Wusuo’s expression stiffened. He cleared his throat. “Let us not.”
Yin Wu laughed aloud and said he was truly useless.
Nearby, Wen Si finished counting everyone. Seeing that it was about time, he asked, “Can we set out now?”
Feng Luan shook dust from his body. “Let us go. Do not delay.”
No one objected. After a little tidying up, they once again climbed upward.
Beiluan Mountain was not like what they had imagined. Its upside-down V shape was strange and rare, and the back side hid many secrets. On this uneven back side, they no longer needed to go around cliffs. Instead, a stone stairway had been opened through the middle, stretching continuously all the way to the summit. Their current position happened to be directly opposite where they had started.
It looked like a straight road, yet it made people uneasy.
Someone grabbed a companion’s hand and sucked in a cold breath. “I bet one copper coin this road has a trick.”
The companion rolled his eyes. “Congratulations. You bet correctly.”
“Who goes first? I do not dare.”
“Of course Senior Brother Wen and the others. Would it be your turn?”
“I do not want to be in the back either.”
“…”
The discussion gradually grew louder. Wen Si stood still and raised his voice. “Quiet.”
From the corner of his eye, he watched Li Lingjiang’s group. “What are you afraid of? Speak less and do not touch things. If you notice anything strange, report it at once.”
Wen Si casually pointed out a few people to follow behind him, not caring whether they were willing. He followed Ling Xin and the others upward. Qi San and Wuzhi walked at the very back.
As soon as they stepped onto the stone stairs, many people felt the difference. Tang Wusuo exclaimed in surprise, “It feels like there is no pressure. My whole body feels light.”
“Yes. My legs are not weak at all.”
“But why does it feel even scarier?”
Many people began discussing all at once. Wen Si circled his words around Ling Xin. “Fellow Cultivator Ling, what do you think will be on this mountain?”
Ling Xin pulled out a perfunctory smile. “Naturally, the more dangerous it is, the more something will be there. But right now, I have a new view of you.”
“How so?”
Ling Xin’s expression faded. As if something had stained him, he blew lightly at his collar. “After all, you brought so many people and still dared enter No-Return Mountain. Good courage.”
He measured his words. “If the Immortal-Entering Sect had not leaked the information, I truly would not have come. After all, this sort of thing is mysterious. No one can say whether it is true or false.”
“We are the same. We discussed for a long time before deciding to take the risk. After all, at our level, the only pity is that the chosen day was not ideal.”
Ling Xin’s words held thorns. Wen Si only smiled them away. He knew very well what strength this group had. They would only drag people down and were not of much use to them.
He only answered, “We still have much to learn, and we are fortunate that everyone is willing to help us. As for the magic artifact, I can tell you one thing. It was granted by heaven to all living beings. It cannot be false.”
A rare longing and fervor appeared in Wen Si.
Ling Xin caught the key words and exchanged a silent look with Li Lingjiang. Then he gave a cold laugh, his expression lazy. “It no longer matters much.”
He walked several steps forward, leaving everyone behind. His gaze sharpened, and he silently expanded his senses. Very quickly, they spread around everyone.
Compared with the hidden currents between those two, Li Lingjiang and Yin Wu were much more relaxed. They followed behind Ling Xin. The young immortal looked at the scenery around Beiluan Mountain and suddenly sighed. “Actually, this place is not bad.”
Li Lingjiang had successfully heard Ling Xin’s conversation just now. She gathered her thoughts back. “You like it?”
Yin Wu spread her hands. “No. I only think it is very peaceful.”
She leaned forward, then looked back at Li Lingjiang. In a very small voice, she said, “My Lord, this kind of life is not bad either. There are no worries.”
Li Lingjiang lowered her eyes to look at her and gave a soft “Mm” as a response. The copper coins at her waist made tiny sounds as they rubbed together, flowing between the two of them.
Everyone climbed steadily upward. There were many stone steps. By the time they reached halfway up the mountain, they felt tired. Fortunately, no accident had happened along the way, so many tense hearts relaxed. The person who had first made the bet grabbed the arm of the person beside him, his expression nervous.
“Zhang Wu, did you hear something?”
Zhang Wu was not strong. He was thin and dry. In pain, he pulled back his arm and rolled his eyes. He lowered his voice. “Wang You, there is no sound at all. Stop being so nervous.”
Wang You stayed alert. He silently tightened the sachet at his waist. Seeing this, Zhang Wu clicked his tongue and reminded him, “Be careful not to get found out. Senior Brother Wen clearly said not to touch things from the Demon Realm randomly. Otherwise, you will suffer.”
“But…” Wang You was still nervous, his eyes full of fear. “I feel like many people are watching me.”
His eyes went blank. He walked upward in a daze, not even noticing Wen Si staring at him.
When they reached the summit, everyone found it unbelievable. It was only noon, and they had met no difficulty at all. Many people grew excited. The summit was bare, and everything could be seen at a glance.
Li Lingjiang turned her head and asked Ling Xin about the situation. His voice was heavy. “It followed behind us. And I feel he has already fallen into demonic madness.”
Another one.
Her expression did not change. She told him to watch quietly for now.
They agreed to rest before going down. Several people gathered into a small circle. Li Lingjiang sat beside Zhang Wu and Wang You, who had been forcibly pulled over. Many others wanted to crowd near them, but Wen Si ordered them away.
Yin Wu could only be separated by Ling Xin. She leaned against Li Lingjiang and took a pair of earrings from her storage pouch, lifting them before Li Lingjiang. “My Lord, will you wear them?”
Li Lingjiang’s gaze had been fixed on one spot. She shifted it and saw the skull-shaped earrings right before her eyes. Amused, she took them. “Where did you buy these?”
The human world did not seem to use skulls as ornaments.
Yin Wu said, “The Demon Realm. I thought you would look very imposing with them.”
Li Lingjiang leaned back a little. “I will not wear them. They are too showy. Why did you suddenly think to give me this?”
Seeing the young immortal’s eager eyes, she realized Yin Wu might be rather attached to how she dressed. After all, most of what she wore now had been prepared by Yin Wu.
“I only just remembered them. You truly will not wear them?” Yin Wu thought for a moment, then hesitantly reached out, still wanting to try. “My Lord, try them.”
Li Lingjiang refused in a low voice. “No.”
Yin Wu looked disappointed for a moment. She sighed. “Then let me compare them.”
As she spoke, she reached toward Li Lingjiang’s earlobe to compare the earrings. Li Lingjiang still resisted a little and shrank back.
Just as Yin Wu’s hand was about to approach Li Lingjiang, they both heard a cry beside them.
“Careful!”
The young immortal’s eyes tightened. She immediately reached out, grabbed Li Lingjiang’s arm, and pulled her toward herself. Li Lingjiang reacted half a beat late. In the next second, warm blood splashed in specks across half her face, then flowed along the line of her cheek and fell to the ground.
