Qing Wu tried to negotiate with Shang Ningye.
“If you behave yourself for the next few days, I’ll bring the person you’re worried about back to you, safe and sound. How about that?”
Shang Ningye remained silent, not making a sound. It was unclear whether she agreed or disagreed.
Seeing that she was unwilling to acknowledge her, just like before, Qing Wu stopped trying to communicate with the soul in her spiritual sea. Instead, she started fiddling with the puppet on her own.
It was unknown what kind of spell had been cast on the puppet, but it seemed able to distinguish that the “Shang Ningye” in front of it was not its true master.
Qing Wu exhausted all her strength but couldn’t control it.
In a fit of anger, she kicked the puppet hard, snapping one of its legs.
Chu Xue was in the middle of worshiping heaven and ancestors, led by the ritual officer. Hearing the commotion, she glanced at the puppet that looked like Shang Ningye and quietly clenched her fists.
Because there was someone nearby whose cultivation was far higher than her own, Wu Ling didn’t dare to act rashly. She only investigated the movements in the palace from a distance.
After confirming that a coronation ceremony for the new king was being held, she decided not to stay any longer.
Just as she was about to leave quietly, the way she had come, she found herself locked in place by a powerful pressure.
Wu Ling was terrified.
When someone suddenly grabbed her shoulder, the hairs on Wu Ling’s back stood on end, and cold sweat broke out instantly.
Wu Ling hadn’t sensed any movement from the other person at all, yet that person had already captured her.
Wu Ling knew in her heart that the person who had captured her from behind must be the powerful expert she had sensed earlier.
Believing that the other person probably wouldn’t dare to easily kill an envoy from the Demon Realm, Wu Ling braced herself and turned around, only to unexpectedly see an incredibly familiar face.
“It’s you!?”
Wu Ling looked at the “Shang Ningye” behind her, who wore an ambiguous smile, and a strange feeling welled up in her heart.
Qing Wu saw the demoness in front of her staring blankly, looking very surprised.
Sensing Shang Ningye’s emotions in her spiritual sea, she curved her lips into a smile.
“You don’t like her, hmm?”
Wu Ling saw “Shang Ningye” give her a strange smile, and instinct made her heart turn cold.
In a flash, she flew to the side.
When she looked up again, the city wall a few steps from where she had been standing had completely collapsed.
“Shang Ningye” was rubbing her temples, seemingly talking to someone.
“Didn’t you say you don’t like her? Why did you stop me?”
Just then, her soul had been violently struck by Shang Ningye again.
Qing Wu only felt a sudden sharp pain in her spiritual sea.
After this feeling faded slightly, the culprit, surprisingly, broke her usual silence and spoke to her.
“Don’t hurt that person, and I promise I won’t oppose you anymore.”
Qing Wu was a little bewildered.
“Why? You clearly don’t like her.”
Shang Ningye was silent for a moment, then answered.
“If she dies, she will be sad.”
Qing Wu chuckled lightly.
But the strong, unfamiliar emotion in her spiritual sea, one she had forgotten for many years, seemed to affect her mood as well.
Qing Wu rubbed her temples, taking a long time to recover.
It was rare for Shang Ningye to show weakness to her.
It wasn’t someone who absolutely had to be killed, so she casually waved her hand at the demoness opposite her.
“Go back and tell your Lord that I’m busy today. I’ll see her tomorrow.”
Wu Ling frowned upon hearing this.
These words from “Shang Ningye” made it seem as if she didn’t take their Lord seriously at all, let alone Wu Ling herself.
Wu Ling was a little angry.
But thinking of the terrifying pressure “Shang Ningye” had just released, Wu Ling, unusually good-tempered, didn’t refute the young demon in front of her.
Mu Qiuhan listened to Wu Ling’s report, her eyebrows furrowing deeply.
“You said her cultivation has greatly increased? Even stronger than yours?”
Why hadn’t Shang Ningye mentioned this to her in all this time?
Wu Ling carefully glanced at Mu Qiuhan.
She felt that her Lord didn’t seem happy to hear this; there wasn’t the slightest hint of joy on her face.
“This subordinate believes that Elder Shang’s current cultivation might be comparable to the Lord’s past strength.”
“Perhaps Elder Shang encountered some fortuitous opportunity and received an inheritance from a senior? If so, this is a good thing for the Demon Realm. Why is the Lord worried?”
Mu Qiuhan’s expression darkened further.
She finally understood what had been wrong with Shang Ningye these past few days.
She had previously felt that Shang Ningye’s tone when speaking to her was different from usual, as if…
…she had become a different person.
She had thought she was just being overly suspicious.
But a faint sense of unease always lingered in her heart, which was why she had rushed here for days.
Now it seemed her feelings from those days were indeed correct.
Inheritance? How could there be such a good thing?
Shang Ningye had probably been possessed.
How long had she been like this?
Was her soul still alright?
Mu Qiuhan suddenly couldn’t sit still and began to pace back and forth in the room.
“She said she’ll see me tomorrow?”
“No, send a formal visit request to the Bai clan immediately. Say I have urgent matters to discuss.”
“Wait, come back. Let me think again.”
Mu Qiuhan pondered over and over, almost grinding her teeth to dust.
The Bai clan’s change of power was very suspicious; that person was likely behind it too.
If she sent a visit request to the new king now, could she really hide it from that person?
That person told Wu Ling she would come to see her tomorrow, perhaps thinking Mu Qiuhan was unaware.
If that’s the case, it might be better to play along.
She just didn’t know if Shang Ningye could wait that long.
Mu Qiuhan suppressed the urge to go find her immediately.
For now, she could only hope for the best.
If anything truly happened to Shang Ningye, she would never let that person escape alive and unharmed.
“Call Chu Yue. You two will help me with something.”
As night fell, Chu Xue knocked on Shang Ningye’s door.
Qing Wu was tinkering with something in the room, a faint, ethereal spiritual light emanating around her.
“I’ve had people gather the things you wanted. They’re all in this storage ring. What do you need them for?”
Qing Wu casually tossed the white bird’s body she was holding onto the floor.
“Is there anyone in your clan who can control fire?”
Chu Xue shook her head.
“The bloodline of the Ice Crystal Yao Clan is incompatible with fire. For many years, no one in our clan has ever had a fire spiritual root.”
She glanced at the stiff white bird tossed to the side, then her gaze returned.
The puppet was now lying on Qing Wu’s bed, its broken leg placed beside its face.
With a face identical to Shang Ningye’s, it looked truly unsettling.
“Are you trying to repair this puppet?”
Qing Wu glanced at Chu Xue upon hearing her but showed no intention of replying.
Chu Xue had no choice but to try and coax her into speaking.
“If you really need someone with a fire spiritual root, I know a person. Perhaps you know her too.”
Qing Wu snorted coldly. “She won’t do.”
“Why?”
“Too nosy.” She seemed a bit impatient and waved her hand at Chu Xue.
“You can go now.”
Chu Xue frowned at this but didn’t move.
What is this woman planning? And she doesn’t want Mu Qiuhan to know?
Chu Xue took a set of teacups from the storage ring on the table and placed them in front of Qing Wu.
“This is Nine Flowers Jade Dew, something Little Ye used to love. Perhaps you’ll like it too.”
Qing Wu’s thoughts were clearly not on the teacups.
Seeing Qing Wu grow increasingly impatient, Chu Xue curtsied to her.
As she left the room, she faintly heard Qing Wu muttering to herself from outside the door.
“Perhaps I should experiment on you? After all, you are the puppet’s master.”
Chu Xue’s footsteps faltered.
The spiritual light she had seen emanating from the woman flashed in her mind.
Could it be… the white bird is Shang Ningye’s lingering soul?
Chu Xue’s pupils widened.
A terrifying thought emerged in her mind.
Could it be that the woman was just trying to merge the Shang Ningye’s soul with the puppet?
The door that had just closed was violently pushed open again by Chu Xue.
Countless green specks of light were now twinkling around Qing Wu.
Amidst those specks of light, a faint green spiritual light was being held by Qing Wu and forcibly pressed onto the puppet’s body.
“You!”
Chu Xue was about to step forward to snatch Shang Ningye’s soul back from Qing Wu’s grasp when she heard the woman shout unhappily.
“If you don’t want her to die, don’t move rashly!”
Chu Xue’s outstretched hand slowly retracted.
She watched helplessly as the woman tried several times, seemingly without success.
Seeing the spiritual light within the array begin to dim, Qing Wu started muttering to herself again.
“It seems it’s not working.”
The specks of light in the magic array and the spiritual light were all withdrawn back into Qing Wu’s body.
“Little Ye!”
Chu Xue had been staring intently at Qing Wu’s actions. Only now did she dare to speak.
After being tormented by Qing Wu, Shang Ningye’s soul seemed to be in bad shape.
Chu Xue took a few steps forward, wanting to hug Shang Ningye.
However, remembering that the woman was currently controlling the body in front of her, she abruptly stopped.
Seeing Chu Xue’s teeth-gritting expression, Qing Wu rolled her eyes at her.
“She won’t die.”
“At most, she just returned what she stole from me these past few days.”
Qing Wu calmly sat down in front of Chu Xue and casually reached for the set of teacups she had left on the table earlier.
She brought the teacup closer, confirmed there was nothing suspicious about it, and then took a sip.
“This stuff is called Nine Flowers Jade Dew? Tastes pretty good.”
