In the depths of the Extreme Abyss, upon the Sea of Calamitous Illusions, an apocalyptic scene slowly unfolded, steeped in a dreadful, oppressive silence.
Above, ink-black clouds surged like a furious tide, converging with the force of an avalanche. They twisted and pressed against each other, layer upon layer, like thousands of bolts of black silk piled in disarray, sealing the entire sky.
The clouds were a pure, profound black, like the deepest of nightmares. Not a single ray of light could escape, mercilessly severing all connection between heaven and earth and plunging this part of the world into a prison of darkness.
A few stray bolts of lightning darted through the clouds, but their pale, fleeting light was like the final struggle of a cornered beast. The moment they appeared, they were devoured by the endless dark. Even their brief rumbles were torn apart by the howling gales and scattered into the vast emptiness.
Yet, in this darkness, there were, strangely, a few lone stars.
They were the several dozen cultivators sent by the Mengling Immortal Manor.
The one in the lead was none other than the manor’s current second-in-command, Su Yanchen.
She focused her mind, recited an incantation to power the formation, and shouted sharply, “Chongji, you have lived for tens of thousands of years, since ancient times even. How is it that the longer you live, the more you regress? Do you not even have the courage to show your face?”
“The courage to show my face? Am I seeing people now?” A cold voice, dripping with infinite mockery, suddenly rang out.
It was impossible to tell if the voice was male or female, nor did it come from any single direction. Instead, it exploded from all corners of the world at once. It began as a muffled thunder, rolling and echoing over the vast Sea of Calamitous Illusions. Each word was drawn out, reverberating as if countless unseen phantoms were repeating the sentence in unison. The echoes intertwined and overlapped, drilling into the cultivators’ ears, making their heads buzz and their very souls feel as though they would be shaken from their bodies.
“You are all nothing but ants.” After speaking, Chongji let out a shrill laugh. “And you are worthy of my notice?”
“You…” Su Yanchen sneered. “It has come to this, and you still don’t realize your own predicament? Chongji, no matter how desperately you’ve struggled, today is the day you die! My fellow disciples and I will destroy you here today.”
“Destroy me?” The echo boomed again. “A beautiful thought. But aren’t there too few of you?”
A hint of surprise flickered across Su Yanchen’s face.
The sea wind was like a frigid gale blowing from the underworld, bone-chillingly cold and carrying the stench of decay as it whipped across her face.
A male cultivator stumbled over to her side. “Zhenjun, we feel like there’s something strange hidden in this wind.”
“Remain calm. Chongji is making a final, desperate struggle. There are only so many of us from the Mengling Immortal Manor here. We must remain vigilant and not fall into disarray,” Su Yanchen warned.
She was now a Zhenjun, a top-ranking existence on the list of immortal masters.
She admitted this operation was somewhat rash—but it was still something she had meticulously planned, something she had waited fifteen years for. She wanted to defeat Chongji with her own power.
It had to be said that Yanqiu’s Yu Lingzi, a true descendant of Nuwa, had dealt a heavy blow to Han Xiao—or rather, to Chongji. She then led the search for Chongji’s scattered soul, forcing him to flee. Although she hadn’t managed to completely destroy him, Chongji could no longer wreak havoc as he had before.
As a leading figure of the Mengling Immortal Manor, Su Yanchen knew more of the inside story.
For instance, she had arrived at the Extreme Abyss’s Sea of Calamitous Illusions a step ahead of everyone else. Chongji was hiding here, devouring life force. She had summoned many people and spent a great deal of time researching a killing formation. She would surely be able to destroy him!
Chongji’s essence was now gravely wounded; he was no match for them.
“Chongji,” Su Yanchen suddenly threw her head back, faced the sky that was sealed by the ink-black clouds, and used all her strength to roar the ancient demon god’s name.
Her voice, wrapped in spiritual energy, pierced through the roar of the sea and the howl of the wind, traveling straight into the endless darkness. “You have nowhere to run! Stop this demonic wind at once. When our Demon-Slaying Formation activates, don’t you dare shatter at the first touch!”
After speaking, Su Yanchen turned and instructed in a low voice, “Prepare to activate the formation.”
“Yes, Zhenjun!” everyone responded.
The few cultivators at the very front exchanged glances and nodded slightly before forming hand seals in perfect unison, as if they had rehearsed it a thousand times. Their fingers flipped and intertwined with nimble grace, spiritual energy glittering at their fingertips.
As the hand seals changed, their spiritual energy gradually gathered, transforming into brilliant lines of light that extended toward the sea’s surface beneath their feet.
Next, the cultivators in the middle of the group swiftly drew prepared formation flags from their sleeves.
The seemingly ordinary flags instantly began to glow with a strange light upon contact with the spiritual energy in the air. The runes on their surfaces seemed to come alive, shimmering with a mystical halo as they fluttered loudly.
A pleased look appeared in Su Yanchen’s eyes as she gazed upon her masterpiece. “Good, let me join in!”
The cultivators holding the flags moved like lightning, dispersing rapidly to specific positions. With each step, ripples of spiritual energy spread from beneath their feet. Once they were in place, they plunged the flags fiercely into the turbulent surface of the sea.
As the flags entered the water, brilliant rings of light rippled outwards, intertwining with the lines of energy released by the first group of cultivators. Slowly, the embryonic form of the Demon-Slaying Formation began to take shape.
“Oh, hehe…” Chongji let out a chilling laugh. “I can’t escape? How interesting. Su Yanchen, you’ve been chasing me for fifteen years, but have you ever even seen me?”
The moment he finished speaking, another gale swept across the sea!
Su Yanchen quickly ordered everyone to switch to a defensive formation. “Wait for now.”
“Zhenjun, look at the reefs they are standing on!” A cultivator in black suddenly rushed over, reminding her with a worried tone.
Su Yanchen looked back.
For some reason, the reefs by the shore were now covered in eerie, black vine-like patterns, resembling some kind of evil sigil. The sea constantly washed over them, and the splashing black foam stained their surroundings, as if draping them in foul-smelling funeral shrouds. The reefs appeared even more sinister and decrepit in the darkness, like silent tombstones upon the Sea of Calamitous Illusions.
Su Yanchen shivered for no reason, just as someone else cried out in alarm, “Oh, Zhenjun, look, there are people coming! Who are they?”
At these words, everyone’s gaze snapped towards the edge of the land. There, at the border where the land met the Sea of Calamitous Illusions, a group of cultivators slowly emerged from the darkness that had previously blurred their silhouettes.
Their clothes were varied, and they held different magic artifacts, but they had all come for the same purpose.
Su Yanchen’s expression shifted slightly. So Yu Lingzi and the others still came? It seems I was a step too late after all.
The person beside her tried to persuade her, “Zhenjun, we have been chasing Chongji for so many years; it’s time for an ending. Having their help is a good thing. If you don’t believe me, just look at those reefs…”
Su Yanchen forced a nod. That reasoning was sound.
If she could defeat Chongji on her own, that would naturally be wonderful, but if their strength alone was not enough, then the losses would outweigh the gains.
“I will go and speak with them first. You all continue,” Su Yanchen said. With a leap, she tapped her feet lightly on the sea’s surface a few times and landed steadily on the shore, meeting Jiang Chunai and the others.
After so many years, seeing Su Yanchen again after such a long time, Jiang Chunai’s heart was a maelstrom of emotions.
The last time they had met, Su Yanchen was her enemy, threatening to kill both her and Han Xiao if they stayed together.
Who would have thought that now, Su Yanchen would be cupping her fists in respect, thanking them for coming to help.
It wasn’t just Yanqiu who had come. After noticing the disappearances of cultivators, Chang Xin had pieced things together, contacted numerous immortal sects, and communicated with Yu Lingzi to confirm Chongji’s location. Only then did she rally everyone to the Extreme Abyss.
They arrived just in time to see the Mengling Immortal Manor, who had gotten there early, setting up their formation.
Chang Xin keenly sensed that something was off. “Zhenjun Yanchen, since your formation is already so complete, it seems you knew long ago that Chongji was in the Extreme Abyss… Why, then, did you act alone?”
This Su Yanchen is always like this.
Su Yanchen avoided Chang Xin’s gaze, her expression indifferent. “Slaying demons and eliminating evil is the proper business of our Mengling Immortal Manor. What, Fellow Daoist Chang, do you think I am too idle?”
The tension between them was palpable, like drawn swords.
To think they would still consider arguing at a critical time like this!
However, Chang Xin had no intention of arguing. She said directly, “This is a crucial moment. The Zhenjun should be explaining the current situation to those of us who arrived later.”
Jing Shun was also among them. He snorted with disdain. “Fellow Daoist Chang, our arrival today has interrupted the great Zhenjun Su’s grand affair. Just think about it, Chongji, an ancient demon from tens of thousands of years ago… even Han Xiao isn’t worthy of carrying his shoes. Last time, it was your master, Yu Lingzi, who defeated Han Xiao. Tell me, wouldn’t that make the second-in-command of our number one immortal sect, the great Zhenjun Su, green with envy?”
Exposed, Su Yanchen shot back a retort of her own, “Jing Shun, you used to hold a deep grudge against Han Xiao!”
Jiang Chunai remained silent, a feeling of contempt flowing through her heart.
If the situation didn’t require it, she truly would not want to associate with such people.
“Chongji’s destruction today is inevitable…” Su Yanchen’s expression turned cold and hard, each word seeming to be coated in ice. “You had best not interfere with my business.”
As she said this, Su Yanchen cast a meaningful glance at Jiang Chunai. “Especially you.”
Last time, their Nine Sages of Mengling had been just a hair’s breadth away from executing Han Xiao within the formation. If it hadn’t been for Jiang Chunai getting in the way, would they have had to deal with all this trouble now?
“Inevitable?” The overwhelming voice, its gender indiscernible but deeply resonant, sounded out once more, as if listening to the most absurd joke in the world. “Hahaha, Su Yanchen, I have been far too indulgent with ants like you…”
That laugh was like the wail of a night owl, sharp and piercing, yet carrying a horrifyingly sinister quality. It echoed wantonly in the oppressive darkness, drilling straight into everyone’s hearts and planting a seed of fear, allowing it to grow wild.
The moment the laughter stopped, the black, monstrous waves, which had seemed calm but were filled with an endless strangeness, suddenly surged up as if a primordial beast had been awakened. The crest of the wave was instantly upon them. The waves rose like towering mountains, rushing towards Su Yanchen and the others with the force to topple mountains and overturn seas.
“Wh-what’s happening?” Jing Shun was aghast, his previously disdainful face instantly ruined.
Atop the wave crests, black spray flew like thousands of sharp, black arrows, whistling through the air with piercing shrieks. Every drop of water seemed to contain a destructive power. Wherever they passed, even the air seemed to be torn apart, letting out mournful wails.
Su Yanchen glanced at him coolly. “What’s happening? Why aren’t you running? If you don’t move faster, even I won’t be able to save you, Fellow Daoist Jing.”
“You!” Jing Shun was choked with anger, but the great wave was already crashing down, and he could only dodge. Unfortunately, he wasn’t fast enough. He was swept into the monstrous wave, and then there was nothing but silence.
While Su Yanchen and Jing Shun bickered, the others had to deal with the surging wave.
Everyone immediately circulated their spiritual energy, their figures retreating backward like lightning. Their robes fluttered, and with the boost from their spiritual energy, their feet barely touched the wave’s crest before they had darted far away, moving so fast that they left only afterimages.
“Run!”
The sounds of panicked escape mingled with Chongji’s sinister, eerie laughter. The scene was worse than hell on earth.
Su Yanchen and the others did everything in their power to retreat from the torrent that crashed down like a primordial beast. Everyone’s nerves were stretched taut, spiritual energy circulating at maximum speed as they executed movement techniques to their limits, weaving precariously between the overwhelming black waves.
The monstrous waves carried a world-destroying momentum, as if they would drag everything into an endless, dark abyss. Every time a crest neared, everyone’s hearts leaped into their throats, the shadow of death following them like a specter.
Fortunately, after a heart-pounding escape, the waves finally began to recede. The deafening roar slowly subsided, leaving only the heavy, ragged breathing of the survivors, which sounded exceptionally clear in the post-calamity silence.
A mixed atmosphere of relief and lingering fear now hung over the Sea of Calamitous Illusions. The sea wind still howled, but it seemed to have let out a small sigh of relief for their survival. As it blew against them, it gave everyone the surreal feeling of having been reborn.
Jiang Chunai was panting heavily when suddenly, she felt a pain in her wrist. Looking down, she saw that her right wrist was once again densely wound with thin, red-black threads.
How long has it been? How long has it been since this color appeared on her wrist?
She thought these threads had been snuffed out long ago.
She raised her head in alarm, looking up along with the other survivors. A soft light broke through the surrounding gloom above the Sea of Calamitous Illusions, like the first spark of hope lit in the dead of night. It was jarringly conspicuous, yet incredibly eye-catching in the suffocating darkness.
There, suspended in mid-air, was a woman in robes whiter than snow, looking down upon them all.
She stood high upon her sword. Behind her, there was no longer a magnificent, golden radiance, but an expanse of thick darkness, roiling with wind and waves.
Darkness was at her back.
What does this look like?
The moment the thought occurred to her, Jiang Chunai’s tears were about to fall.
She remembered, after losing her memories, how she had trekked over mountains and rivers to reach the Bright Snow Sect. At that time, Han Xiao, the peerless first disciple of the Immortal Lord, had been just like this, perched on her Twilight Kite sword, looking down on them from above.
And she, along with all the other feverent disciples, had worshipped her as if a god had descended.
She was seeing her again.
The wind and waves ceased, but Han Xiao’s gaze remained glued to Jiang Chunai.
Whether in the past or now, she was always like this, never changing.
Among ten thousand people, she would find her without the slightest deviation.
Compared to Jiang Chunai’s heart palpitations, the others felt more shock and fear. “What’s going on? How is Han Xiao here? Isn’t she already dead?”
For a moment, the crowd fell into a commotion, each person guessing at the reason for Han Xiao’s appearance.
“What do we do? Weren’t we told that Chongji was just a step away from being sealed? But why is it still Han Xiao after we got here? Could it be that Yu Lingzi’s operation didn’t succeed at all?”
“Speaking of which… isn’t the Spirit Spring Rejuvenation Formation just one step away from completion? All the hundred immortal sects are here this time, and doesn’t the final activation of the formation require the sacrifice of many people?”
As soon as this was said, everyone was horrified. They all felt he had a point, and someone’s lips began to tremble in fear. “Right, right, it needs a lot of sacrifices… does that mean we’re doomed? Can we run?”
“Coward! This is the Extreme Abyss, you want to run? We’re already here. Today, either Chongji dies, or we do!”
Su Yanchen frowned deeply before finally saying, “Remain calm. Even if He is still in Han Xiao’s body, it means He has not been successfully revived. Everyone, we will win.”
“Win?” The woman suspended high in the air curled her lip into a mocking smile. Her voice was not Han Xiao’s clear and gentle one, but the same terrifying tone that had threatened to swallow the sun. “Su Yanchen, today I will let you know…”
“Do you see those reefs?”
“Han Xiao” pointed again to the black reefs by the sea. “Those are your graves. However, I will pardon one person.”
After she spoke, her heavy gaze fell, once again sticking to Jiang Chunai. Then, her voice miraculously transformed into one as clear and gentle as Han Xiao’s. “Chunai, what are you doing standing over there? Didn’t you promise me before that we would be together forever, like entwined branches sharing a single tomb?”
“They are not on your side, I am. Look at your wrist.” She smiled, her voice gentle and coaxing, yet it didn’t sound like Han Xiao, but rather…
The female voice from her sea of consciousness, one that had been gone for a very long time.
Hearing “Han Xiao’s” strange words, the others all cast odd glances at Jiang Chunai, not understanding what the reference to her wrist meant.
Jiang Chunai gritted her teeth, a repetitive wave of nausea churning in her gut. Slowly, she began to move.
Chang Xin, Lan Xu, and Zhi Zhi saw that she was about to step out from the group and anxiously called out to her, “Chunai (Senior Sister), you cannot take another step forward!”
Jiang Chunai paid them no heed. She strode out, meeting “Han Xiao’s” gaze head-on against the wind and waves. The latter sized her up with great interest. “So obedient, Chunai. This is how it should be. We are one and the same.”
“Get out,” she said, lifting her chin to meet “Han Xiao’s” eyes directly, her tone firm. “Get out of Han Xiao’s body.”
“Tsk? You dare speak to me like that?”
“Han Xiao” froze, as if not expecting Jiang Chunai to be so confrontational.
Han Xiao—no, it was better to call her Chongji.
Chongji continued to let out a cold laugh from deep within his chest. The shadow of the dark clouds fell upon her face, only faintly revealing eyes that glinted with a dark golden fire, like two will-o’-the-wisps burning in the darkness, filled with endless malice and mockery.
The voice once again came from all directions. “What do you mean, ‘get out’? Jiang Chunai, you have misunderstood one thing.”
Jiang Chunai stood alone at the front of the group, looking up at Chongji, utterly fearless.
The wind howled, violently pulling at her robes, making the hem flutter and snap.
Chongji was suspended high in the sky, demonic energy roiling around him, looking like the master of darkness as he gazed down at Jiang Chunai below, his eyes filled with contempt and amusement.
The two faced each other, one above and one below, like a lone star facing the vast sky. Though the disparity in their power was immense, the scene was one of tragic grandeur.
“Do you know what you’ve misunderstood?” Chongji said, and the strange gales began to blow once more.
Su Yanchen immediately ordered the cultivators setting up the formation to be ready to strike the moment the opportunity arose.
Jiang Chunai’s eyes were cold as she said, “Don’t dawdle.”
Dilly-dallying like this, what kind of demon god is he?
“You’re quite like me,” Chongji chuckled in a low voice. “Worthy of being a part of me… In that case, I’ll tell you.”
Hearing this voice, which was nearly identical to the one from her sea of consciousness, Jiang Chunai’s heart trembled.
For some reason, an answer that had been buried deep inside her was now about to burst forth.
“Not only does Han Xiao’s body belong to me, but your body also belongs to me.”
