Yan Huirou admitted that upon seeing such an ending, her first reaction was annoyance. The fundamental reason wasn’t that she felt the plot was too sloppy; after all, giving the protagonist a “golden finger” was a very common storytelling technique. Although she didn’t read much romance fiction, she understood this basic concept.
Yan Huirou was just a little scared, in hindsight. It was a good thing she came; a good thing she didn’t hesitate and flew to this world like a moth to a flame. Otherwise, when Jiang Xidai died alone, facing enemies from all directions waiting to tear her apart when she was weak, watching her own blood drip away bit by bit, what kind of despair would that have been?
She took a deep breath. “Sorry… I was too harsh just now.”
Chen Cha’an: It’s okay, it’s okay, I understand. After all, it looks like you see her as a ‘fellow being’. When we were writing it, we just treated it as a simple story… who knew it would come to this today.
Hearing the words “fellow being,” a trace of sorrow flashed in Yan Huirou’s eyes. “Cha’an, if I promise to come back…”
What?! Okay!! The sound of someone spitting out coffee came through, making Yan Huirou worry about the expensive electronic display. Chen Cha’an was so excited that her typing speed increased dramatically, as if she had found some keyword, clattering away: Now? You can go and prepare…
Yan Huirou quickly interrupted her overly excited friend. “What I mean is, can I possibly bring Jiang Xidai back with me?”
The sound of typing immediately stopped. Chen Cha’an seemed to adjust her microphone. …Don’t get carried away with fantasies.
Yan Huirou: “When I was on missions before, I also collected some plant samples from alternate worlds. Weren’t they brought back for the research department to study? Is your rejection due to technical limitations, or bureau regulations?”
It’s a mix of both factors. None of those plant samples survived; they all disintegrated in this spacetime after a few days. As for characters… there’s no precedent, and the consequences can’t be predicted. Chen Cha’an sighed softly. You’re more familiar with the bureau’s regulations than I am. You should know this isn’t allowed.
“…” Yan Huirou lowered her eyelashes. “I understand.”
Yan Yan, I often want to scold you sometimes. You’ve really changed. The you on missions before was rational and gentle, always coming up with the best plan. Chen Cha’an: But in my recent observations, I’ve also been thinking, isn’t the willfulness and persistence in Jiang Xidai actually from your own heart? Since your family’s accident, I really haven’t seen you look so alive for a long time. Now I’m more and more certain of it. It’s not that she needs you, but that you need her.
Yan Huirou faintly curved her lips, it was unclear if it was self-mockery, and she didn’t answer the question directly. “Alright, looking at the time, Sect Master should be done with her bath soon. I’ll head back first.”
Okay.
The spring day was warm, but the wind blowing on her felt a bit chilly. Yan Huirou wrapped her light-colored cloak tighter around her and slowly walked towards the Shasheng Sect.
Inside Qionghua Hall.
Jiang Xidai’s robes were loose, her hair down, looking as if she had just emerged from the water, her face still flushed a faint pink from the hot steam. After a long night and fighting an enemy this morning, she had just finished bathing. Finally relaxing, Jiang Xidai was clearly drowsy. She lay sideways on the soft carpet in the main hall, idly toying with a gold chain.
So tacky, not good-looking. She tossed the glittering piece of gold into a nearby chest, making another clanging sound.
Yan Huirou is here?
“Hold out your hand.”
When Yan Huirou arrived, before she could say much, her hands were filled with a pile of variously shaped jewels, so heavy she almost dropped them.
“These few have a beautiful color, they suit you extremely well.” She lay back, her expression relaxed. “Are you short on money, Yan Yan? Don’t sell the pretty ones; you can have this whole chest.”
“Not really short, life is good enough.” Yan Huirou sat down beside her. Jiang Xidai automatically scooted over, leaving room for her. But the gap between them was soon closed as the woman pressed close, not a sliver of space remaining. Jiang Xidai propped herself up, resting her chin on Yan Huirou’s shoulder, and whispered in her ear, “Then what do you like? While bathing just now, this Seat was thinking, I don’t seem to know your preferences very well.”
“Sect Master thinks of me no matter what she’s doing,” Yan Huirou tilted her head, her cheek pressing against Jiang Xidai’s. “That seems to make me very happy.”
Jiang Xidai seemed unimpressed. “…That’s too simple.”
“What about this?” A sudden lightness on Yan Huirou’s shoulder, and something agile leaped onto her lap. A fluffy bundle rubbed against her hand. She looked down to see that beautiful little cat. Its figure was delicate, its eyes a deep green. The orange on its fur was iridescent, and the white was like dandelions, each strand distinct, yet exceptionally soft to the touch, like satin.
Yan Huirou, in a very good mood, stroked it. “Of course, this is nice.” Unable to resist, she stroked it again, picked it up, took a deep breath, and then took the cat’s ear into her mouth. “…Too cute.”
The well-behaved furball squirmed, its tail whipping against her arm, seemingly protesting against her taking too many liberties.
“I’ve been meaning to remind you.”
Yan Huirou: “What?”
The little orange cat was flicking its ears. “…This kind of thing can’t be eaten raw.”
“Alright, I won’t bite you anymore.” Yan Huirou scratched the base of its tail. The tail, stimulated, wrapped around her arm.
A wisp of light smoke drifted by. Jiang Xidai transformed back, a wet patch on her cheek. She sighed softly and pushed Yan Huirou. “Alright, that’s enough.”
“Sect Master.” Yan Huirou didn’t back away, instead taking Jiang Xidai’s hand. “Although I’m not short on money, I’d like to ask for one thing.”
“Mmm, go on.” Jiang Xidai’s gaze fell on Yan Huirou. Though she hadn’t spoken yet, a spark of interest had appeared. After all, Yan Huirou had never asked her for anything.
“If I,” Yan Huirou said, “wanted the Shasheng Sect?”
“The Shasheng Sect…” Jiang Xidai was stunned for a moment. “Really?”
“Mmm.” Yan Huirou nodded, her voice firm.
Jiang Xidai hadn’t answered yet. She was stunned for a moment, her gaze on Yan Huirou, her brow slightly furrowed, as if trying to discern the meaning of her words.
Meanwhile, someone in Yan Huirou’s mind gasped. Heavens, aren’t you a bit too fierce, Yan Yan? What are you trying to usurp the throne for? Although she likes you, she’s only known you for a few years? How could she agree to this?! Don’t provoke your daughter, it’s very dangerous when the plot goes off the rails!
Jiang Xidai smiled lightly. “Alright.”
Yan Huirou’s heart leaped, then relaxed with a thud. “You’re not even going to ask what I’m going to do?”
“What do you want to do?” Jiang Xidai raised an eyebrow. “Tear down my home? How come I never noticed you had such ambition before.”
Yan Huirou frowned. “If I really tear it down…”
“Then you don’t want me to agree? You’ve asked, so why such an expression?”
Yan Huirou paused, then shook her head. “I just thought this request was a bit excessive. Perhaps you would refuse.”
“It is quite excessive.” Jiang Xidai leaned back, gracefully lying down, casually resting a leg on Yan Huirou. “After all, the Shasheng Sect is also my place of rest. When one gets old, one gets too lazy to go and snatch another auspicious place.”
“But you said you would never betray me,” Jiang Xidai said comfortably. “These are all small matters. A mere Shasheng Sect, though it has much gold, silver, and magic artifacts, is unremarkable in the grand scheme of things. If you like it, take it.”
… Chen Cha’an muttered, No, seriously, girl… you really don’t care about money… It’s a good thing you met your ‘mother’, otherwise you’d be scammed badly sooner or later.
Yan Huirou temporarily cut off the dialogue channel in her mind, and the world became quiet again.
Jiang Xidai lifted her eyes, her gaze shimmering as she looked at Yan Huirou. “So, will you?”
Will she… Not being able to accompany her for a lifetime, does that count as betrayal? Perhaps in Jiang Xidai’s heart, it would. Previously, Yan Huirou might have been able to answer without any reservation, but now she couldn’t face the open and honest Jiang Xidai.
“I won’t,” Yan Huirou felt like she was lying. Guilt made her words very light, floating like a feather.
“Yes, I don’t value many things,” Jiang Xidai was very satisfied. “This is enough.”
“What’s wrong? You asked for my Shasheng Sect, why don’t you look very happy?” Jiang Xidai couldn’t help but ask curiously, “What do you want to do?”
Yan Huirou slowly came back to her senses. “I…”
“I want the Shasheng Sect to become an orderly, powerful, and renowned first sect that dominates the world.” When talking about future plans, Yan Huirou’s voice softened and became much firmer. “In fifty years, no one will call this place a demonic path, and no one will call the Sect Master a demonic witch. You will still be the Sect Master of the Shasheng Sect, and in the future, many sects will come to pledge allegiance to you, to support you… just like they now revere the Immortal Alliance.”
Jiang Xidai looked at her intently for a while. “Yan Yan, are you sure?”
“Yes, very sure,” Yan Huirou said. “So I want to act as the Sect Master for a while. Don’t worry, it just takes some time… I should be able to do it.”
“It’s not a question of whether you can do it or not.” Jiang Xidai was still playing with her jewels. She picked up a gold-inlaid feather pendant and gently tickled her chin with it. She was just puzzled. “Why waste effort on such a thing?”
Just find a way to kill Li Xinghe, and that would be enough. As for other people, Jiang Xidai hadn’t really considered them. She had always been very confident in her own strength. The Four Great Righteous Sects combined couldn’t capture her; she always felt they weren’t a threat worth her notice.
