The birthday celebration should have been a joyous occasion. Qi Chun was excitedly pulling Lin Wuxi to go enjoy the song and dance performances around the Wan Hen Sect, but someone wasn’t about to let things go so smoothly.
“Sect Master Song, my humble sect has long heard rumors that the Wan Hen Sect seems to have dealings with demonic cultivators. Of course, we wouldn’t believe such gossip from petty people. However, because this matter is of great importance, my sect still wishes to boldly ask Sect Master Song for clarification, hoping you can give an answer to the various sects of the cultivation world.” The one who spoke was from a small sect near the Wan Hen Sect; it was unclear why he had been pushed forward by the others to take the lead.
Sect Master Song wasn’t surprised to hear this, only saying calmly, “The rumors you’ve heard are correct. Our sect will indeed cooperate with demonic cultivators. Do you all have any other questions?”
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone was in an uproar. Although in recent years, demonic cultivators had weakened and tried to avoid direct conflict with cultivators, resulting in few disputes with the cultivation world, back in ancient times, when demonic cultivators and cultivators were rivals, both sides suffered many casualties. They were practically sworn enemies. How could hatred accumulated over so many years disappear so easily!
“Sect Master Song, the cultivation world and demonic cultivators have always been sworn enemies who don’t associate with each other! Have you forgotten the great war between the righteous and demonic paths of ancient times? How many of our seniors in the cultivation world died because of it? Now, how can you talk about cooperating with our former enemies?” The speaker’s voice was like a great bell, his tone pained and sorrowful, moving everyone who heard.
Sect Master Song said, “Who knows how long it has been since the great righteous-demonic war. The demonic cultivators who killed our seniors back then are likely all gone now. Generations, perhaps hundreds or thousands, separate them from today’s demonic cultivators. Fellow Daoist, how can you hold onto old grudges and let them prevent you from moving forward?”
“We cultivators pursue the Heavenly Dao and long life. Demonic cultivators are merely on a different path to the same destination. From ancient times until now, the two sides have fought mostly due to personal grudges. In reality, there are no conflicts between them that truly can’t be settled. So much time has passed; why can’t everyone let go of old hatreds and pursue the immortal Dao together?”
As soon as Song Qingde finished speaking, the square fell silent for a moment. When benefits were at stake, what did old grudges and hatred matter? Feuds from countless years ago seemed trivial in the face of their own interests. What they truly cared about were the advantages that cooperating with demonic cultivators would bring to the Wan Hen Sect.
The Wan Hen Sect was already the largest sect in the cultivation world. If they now cooperated with demonic cultivators, who could possibly stand against them in the future?
This was something all the sects understood clearly but had never openly stated. The earlier back-and-forth was merely probing.
How to deal with these sects was the Sect Master’s and her Senior Sister’s business. Lin Wuxi normally wouldn’t need to worry about it at all. But the tense atmosphere made Lin Wuxi’s heart grow heavy with anxiety.
In the past, Lin Wuxi would have remained aloof and let things unfold, even though this cooperation had started because of her. But now, Lin Wuxi couldn’t remain as detached as before. Her mind continuously analyzed the possible developments and the most advantageous solutions for the Wan Hen Sect.
After all, that particular person was at the center of this event. Even if Lin Wuxi herself was useless, she couldn’t help but worry for her.
“Sect Leader, your words are serious indeed. However, cooperating with demonic cultivators is no small matter. This old one believes the Sect Leader should still discuss it with everyone.” Someone finally broke the silence, but what they said wasn’t particularly welcome, especially to the Wan Hen Sect.
“Since when did the Wan Hen Sect need to consult others about who they partnered with?” Song Qingde struggled to maintain his composed expression, his face subtly twisting. But these people had clearly come prepared. Seeing the ambiguous and unclear stance of the Buddhist Sect and the Hehuan Sect, it seemed this matter had their silent agreement. As the Sect Master, Song Qingde could only try his best to suppress his fury. Even if the Wan Hen Sect was powerful, it couldn’t withstand a siege from so many factions.
In the end, the various sects still sent representatives to the Heavenly Justice Hall for negotiations. Though termed negotiations, it was, in truth, merely a matter of dividing the spoils.
The Wan Hen Sect had already made concessions. The demonic cultivators’ cultivation techniques were bound to be leaked. Throughout history, few had ever managed to obtain both types of complete techniques. Even if some had, their numbers were extremely limited, and it was difficult for any single individual to research much. Now that these two sets of techniques were being widely disseminated, with so many talented geniuses in the cultivation world, it was said this might usher in a new era.
And the Wan Hen Sect, as the most direct partner working with the demonic cultivators, would undoubtedly gain the most. For Yu Huang, who held an extraordinary position within the Wan Hen Sect, this was unquestionably good news. But with an astonishingly talented individual like Yu Huang, coupled with the most direct resources gained from the demonic cultivator incident, it was said the Wan Hen Sect might become the next dominant power.
Many people would obviously not want this to happen and would try by all means to prevent it. The simplest and most straightforward method was—to kill Yu Huang!
Even if Yu Huang was incredibly strong and her talent unparalleled, her time spent cultivating was far too short. If any sect dispatched a few old-timers who had cultivated for centuries to surround her, Yu Huang would undoubtedly find it hard to resist. Senior Sister is in danger!
At this thought, Lin Wuxi was overcome with anxiety. She hurriedly looked up to find Yu Huang’s figure. She spotted her at once. Yu Huang was in the Heavenly Justice Hall, calming the unrest triggered by the exposure of the demonic cultivator affair. Her snow-white figure hovered lightly in the air, every gesture radiating a dazzling brilliance.
Watching her outstanding Senior Sister, Lin Wuxi calmed down slightly. She desperately searched her mind for a solution, but no matter how she pondered, such a crisis seemed impossible to completely resolve. Senior Sister could only try her best to stay within the Wan Hen Sect to avoid assassination attempts from other sects. But would Senior Sister actually do that? Obviously, she wouldn’t!
Lin Wuxi was still frowning with worry, not yet having a chance to devise a solution, when a terrifying wave of spiritual energy surged from the direction of the Heavenly Justice Hall. That was where Senior Sister was!
Could someone be attacking Senior Sister here, now? Thinking this, Lin Wuxi’s eyes practically split with fury. She whirled around but then froze, unable to budge an inch.
It was too late. She saw her Senior Sister struck squarely between the eyebrows, sent flying outwards with no chance to resist. Such a close-range, powerful assassination attempt—let alone Yu Huang, even a Nascent Soul cultivator couldn’t possibly have blocked it. Senior Sister… assassinated within the Wan Hen Sect!
The attacker’s figure—no, it was Yu Huang—descended silently, her wind-blown robes rustling. Her deathly pale face turned slightly, her profound eyes filled with unspoken words, as if to etch Lin Wuxi’s green silhouette into her heart forever.
A strangled cry tore from Lin Wuxi’s throat. She felt the world spin around her, as if she had returned to that rainy night ten years ago. Heart-wrenching pain spread from her core. Her mind went blank. She could only react on instinct, flying forward to catch that fragile, heart-wrenching figure.
The one in her arms looked so pitiful. Her face had lost all color, her beautiful eyes were closed, and a faint smile lingered on the corner of her lips.
The person in her embrace was so beautiful, but her life force was already gone. Struck directly on the crown of her head—there was no precedent for survival in the cultivation world after such a blow.
Holding the gradually cooling body, Lin Wuxi was completely lost. She forgot where she was, even her own name. But one sentence uncontrollably rose to her lips, something she felt she had to say, or she would never have another chance.
Leaning her head slightly closer to the ear of the one in her arms, Lin Wuxi murmured, “Senior Sister, I love you.”
She just wanted to say those words. She felt she couldn’t wait any longer. She had forgotten everything, yet she still remembered these words she had never spoken aloud.
But it was already too late.
Tears dripped onto the beautiful face in her embrace. Lin Wuxi frantically tried to wipe them away with her hand, but she couldn’t get them all. More and more tears stained that beautiful face. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” Lin Wuxi kept apologizing, but she couldn’t stop the tears streaming down her own face.
Suddenly, a low clap of thunder echoed in the sky, shaking the very stones on the ground. Everyone looked up in surprise. The azure sky was clear, without a single dark cloud. Where did this tremendous clap of thunder come from?
Following the thunder, an enraged voice suddenly boomed across the vast sky: “You mere mortals, how dare you scorn the might of the heavens!” The voice, though not imbued with spiritual energy, still made everyone’s ears ring, and some nearly fainted!
As the voice faded, one person in the crowd below exploded, their very soul dissipating into the air along with them, leaving not a single trace behind.
That was the old man who had assassinated Yu Huang, a respected elder who ranked among the top ten in the entire cultivation world. He was instantly obliterated without a chance to resist. What kind of power was this!
Without warning, dozens of gray-robed figures appeared in the clear blue sky. None of them showed any fluctuation of spiritual energy, simply hovering in mid-air without the aid of any magical artifact. They exuded no discernible pressure, yet their presence alone instinctively made everyone on Sky Peak feel an overwhelming urge to kneel.
The one leading this group glanced at Lin Wuxi and said lightly, “Hand over the Immortal Lord, and your lives may be spared.” His voice, also devoid of any fluctuation, nonetheless carried an authority that made people want to obey.
The “Immortal Lord” these gray-robed individuals spoke of was undoubtedly Yu Huang; it could be no other.
“No.” Beyond everyone’s expectations, this was Lin Wuxi’s answer.
“Lin Wuxi, do not be disrespectful!” It was the Sect Master’s voice. He had just rushed over upon hearing the commotion and heard Lin Wuxi’s reply, feeling he had to stop her immediately.
“Sect Master Song Qingde of the Wan Hen Sect has failed to protect the Immortal Lord. I beg the Immortals for punishment!” Ignoring everything else, Song Qingde immediately knelt in the Heavenly Justice Hall, his head bowed low, actually begging for punishment from the group of gray-robed figures.
“Your crimes will be dealt with in due time.” The gray-robed figure didn’t even glance at Song Qingde, his gaze fixed on Lin Wuxi. “What did you say just now?” His words dripped with undisguised contempt.
“I don’t trust you people. There’s no way I’m handing Yu Huang over to you. So what if you’re Immortals? Unless you step over my dead body, I won’t let anyone touch Senior Sister!” Despite the overwhelming pressure, Lin Wuxi showed no fear.
“Then die.” The gray-robed figure waved his sleeve. Lin Wuxi was flung into the air. Silver specks of light rapidly converged on her, threatening to tear her apart.
“Immortals, please show mercy!” Song Qingde, seeing this, hurriedly shouted to stop them. This might be his only chance to survive. “She shares an extremely close bond with the Immortal Lord. Perhaps this current outcome is because of her!”
“She harmed the Immortal Lord?” The silver specks of light in mid-air slowly faded. The gray-robed figure asked sharply, a silver light flickering in his eyes. Lin Wuxi felt a chill run down her spine, as if she had been seen through completely.
“A mere mortal like you dares to approach the Immortal Lord?” With a cold snort, the gray-robed figure raised his right hand. Lin Wuxi felt an immense power take control of her, rendering her immobile once more. She could only watch helplessly as Yu Huang was lifted from her embrace.
“No!” Lin Wuxi cried out, desperately circulating her spiritual energy, trying to break free from the restraints. But how could a mere Foundation Establishment cultivator like her possibly break free from a restriction placed by an Immortal from the Heavenly Realm? Her efforts were futile, and she only suffered the backlash from the restriction.
Coughing up blood, Lin Wuxi had reached her limit from the backlash. She could barely stand. But she was unwilling, unwilling to let her Senior Sister fall into the hands of these so-called Immortals of unknown origin. She channeled all her remaining spiritual energy into the Qingyu Brush in her hand, wanting to fly to her Senior Sister’s side.
“She can still move?” All the gray-robed Immortals in the sky were astonished. Under a restrictive spell cast by an Immortal, this mere mortal could still resist? This was truly unbelievable.
“It seems we underestimated you. We cannot allow you to disturb the Immortal Lord any further.” The gray-robed Immortal caught Yu Huang as she drifted. Simultaneously, a silver beam shot from his hand straight towards Lin Wuxi’s dantian. “This mortal is too dangerous. She might actually find her way to the Celestial Palace. We absolutely cannot let the Immortal Lord encounter this person who has disrupted all our plans again.”
The silver beam struck the bound Lin Wuxi without fail. Let alone Lin Wuxi being under the Immortal’s restriction, even if she hadn’t been, she would have had no way to block such an attack.
Lin Wuxi felt a violent upheaval in her dantian, as if thousands of sharp knives were rapidly cutting inside. Her stored spiritual energy gushed out like air from a pierced balloon. Unable to withstand the assault any longer, she lost consciousness.
Watching the figure floating away in the air, before losing consciousness, Lin Wuxi had only one thought: she absolutely, absolutely had to find her Senior Sister!
