The azure sea was so calm there wasn’t even a ripple. Everyone flew swiftly on their swords high above its surface, relaxed expressions on their faces. The island expedition had gone smoothly; they had gained much and suffered no casualties, which naturally put everyone in a cheerful mood.
But the relaxed atmosphere didn’t last. As the sky darkened and clouds thickened, everyone’s mood grew heavy. A storm was brewing.
The once calm sea had completely lost its serene appearance. Huge waves roared as if to overturn heaven and earth, mixed with the dull rumble of thunder from above. It felt as though the tiny cultivators could be swept away by a sudden squall at any moment.
Although these favored children of the cultivation world would fear bad weather, traveling through a storm was never pleasant. Everyone slowed down, hoping to find a small island where they could take shelter.
Spreading their spiritual senses, they soon discovered a small island tens of kilometers away, just about suitable for landing.
After a short while, they reached the small island, which was only a few hundred square meters. It had only a few sparse, short trees, and its exposed soil was covered with gravel. Though not ideal, it would suffice for a temporary landing.
Yu Huang spread her spiritual sense, searching several hundred li around. Although she found nothing suspicious, she still felt uneasy. She set up a few simple defensive formations on the island but was still not at ease. After a moment’s thought, she secretly added a hidden teleportation array, which finally eased her mind somewhat.
Lowering her voice, Yu Huang turned to Lin Wuxi beside her and said, “Stay close to me later. Don’t leave my side, no matter what.”
Lin Wuxi also seemed to sense something amiss and nodded. “Yes.”
The thunder grew louder, the waves more turbulent, and the wind howled fiercely. As the first raindrop fell, countless large drops, like beans, followed, pelting the sea surface. The sound of the torrential rain even began to drown out the roar of the thunder.
In the distance, a silver line connected the sky and the sea horizon. Lin Wuxi’s pupils constricted slightly. Heavens! It’s a tornado!
Although cultivators would be fine if they carefully avoided the tornado, at this moment, the appearance of a tornado was clearly not a good thing.
The tornado approached with extreme speed, the silver needle-like line becoming clearer and clearer. Even though she knew the timing was bad, Lin Wuxi was still stunned by the spectacular sight before her. The enormous tornado, like a dragon, pierced straight into the clouds, twisting and turning in the fierce wind, accompanied by crashing thunder and lightning, as if the end of the world was nigh.
Sensing that the tornado was actually heading towards them, Yu Huang immediately released her spiritual sense. Dozens of miles away, hundreds of cultivators were flying in their direction!
The strength of these hundreds of cultivators varied greatly, but among them were quite a few Gold Core stage cultivators, and even several Nascent Soul elders. They were clearly well-prepared.
Although the disciples of the Wan Hen Sect were all talented, their cultivation time was still short, so they were naturally no match for these Gold Core and Nascent Soul cultivators who had trained for hundreds of years. Although Yu Huang was confident enough to defeat anyone here, she couldn’t look after so many young disciples.
What audacity! Yu Huang gritted her teeth. These scoundrels actually dared to provoke the Wan Hen Sect; they truly don’t know how the word ‘death’ is written!
With no time to spare, Yu Huang gathered everyone and said, “Time is pressing. Hundreds of scoundrels are attacking from ahead. You all use the transportation array to leave. Hurry back to the Wan Hen Sect and report this to the Sect Master. I will hold them off.”
“Senior Sister!”
Everyone was unwilling in their hearts, but they also knew that staying here would only hinder their Senior Sister. They seethed with resentment inwardly, vowing to cultivate diligently after returning, and never let their Senior Sister face such a situation again!
The light of the transportation array had already faintly lit up. The disciples began to teleport away from the small island one by one. Yu Huang also flew into the sky. Her cold voice, though not loud, spread across the entire sea surface: “Everyone, ganging up on the few, the strong bullying the weak—don’t you feel ashamed?”
“Enough nonsense. Prepare to die.”
Yu Huang let out a cold laugh. The Qingluan sword appeared. A dark, heavy radiance burst forth. Obscure incantations echoed between heaven and earth. Mysterious ancient characters floated out from the sword, circling around Yu Huang to form a Tai Chi Bagua diagram. The surging spiritual energy around them even dispersed the wind from the tornado.
Her black hair flew wildly. Her stunning figure, illuminated by the overwhelming radiance, possessed an awe-inspiring aura that seemed to look down upon the world.
Not good, she’s going all out! The leading Nascent Soul cultivators were alarmed. They exchanged a look, and focused all their spiritual energy into a single point, aiming for Yu Huang’s heart. They knew their survival depended on this move!
The torrential spiritual energy exploded. It avoided the small island, but beyond that, for a hundred miles, there were no survivors.
From the dim, heavy sky, a figure plummeted straight down. Lin Wuxi, who was the last one stepping into the transportation array, felt her heart clench. She forcefully pulled back her foot that was halfway in. Fresh blood spurted. Ignoring her own injuries from the array’s backlash, she flew on her sword and perilously caught Yu Huang, who was about to be swept into the tornado.
She put a protective barrier around them both. Then she checked Yu Huang’s injuries. The wound was a centimeter from her heart. Thank goodness.
After performing a simple hemostasis spell on Yu Huang, Lin Wuxi had no strength left to fight the tornado. The two of them were immediately swept into it. Yu Huang… Lin Wuxi only hoped they could survive this ordeal safely.
The azure sea waves lapped gently at the sandy beach. The sea had long since returned to calm. Such storms were a common sight in the ocean; once they passed, no one paid them any mind—except for those who had faced them directly.
When Yu Huang woke up, the first thing she saw was Lin Wuxi lying beside her. Her eyes were closed, and she was completely soaked. There were still traces of dried blood at the corner of her mouth.
Her heart ached. This wasn’t the first time she had seen Lin Wuxi in such a sorry state, but every time she did, it made her feel a little more distressed.
She couldn’t use her spiritual energy, so Yu Huang could only use her hand to check Lin Wuxi’s pulse. Fortunately, her pulse was only slightly weak and unstable; there was no serious issue.
Lin Wuxi woke up in an inn. She was lying on a bed, and her clothes had been changed by someone. There was even a warm, damp towel on her forehead.
I don’t have a fever, so what’s this towel for? Besides, I’m a cultivator. Even if I really had a fever, a warm towel wouldn’t do much good.
Just as she was grumbling inwardly, the door creaked open. Yu Huang pushed the door open and walked in, carrying a basin of hot water.
“Senior Sister Yu Huang, what are you doing?”
Seeing Lin Wuxi awake, Yu Huang seemed quite pleased. She hurriedly carried the hot water to the bedside and reached out, intending to check Lin Wuxi’s pulse.
Lin Wuxi didn’t know what Yu Huang intended to do and stood up in alarm, bumping right into the basin of hot water in Yu Huang’s hands. With a splash, all the hot water spilled onto Lin Wuxi.
Yu Huang: “!?”
Lin Wuxi: “!”
Yu Huang: “I’m sorry!” Saying this, she quickly put down the basin in her hands and stood there, not knowing what to do.
Seeing Yu Huang’s flustered appearance, Lin Wuxi chuckled. She walked over, pulled Yu Huang to the bedside, and pressed her down to sit. “It’s okay, don’t worry. I’m a cultivator, how could I get hurt by this?”
I never thought that Senior Sister Yu Huang, who usually seems so cold and noble, would have such a side to her.
But it’s actually… quite cute.
Yu Huang turned her head away, pretending as if nothing had just happened. She walked to the window with her hands behind her back. “Our spiritual energy is mostly depleted and won’t recover for a while. Your injuries haven’t healed either. I’m afraid we can’t go back anytime soon. Let’s recuperate in this mortal realm for some time and make plans later.”
“Yes.” Seeing that Yu Huang had returned to her usual demeanor, Lin Wuxi quickly replied formally. But speaking of injuries, Lin Wuxi thought of Yu Huang’s wound that had narrowly missed her heart. An attack from so many Gold Core cultivators is definitely not to be underestimated!
“Senior Sister,” Lin Wuxi stood up, “your injury…”
“It’s nothing serious.”
How could that be? Her injury is already so severe that she can’t even fly on her sword anymore?
Lin Wuxi didn’t say anything more, but she secretly resolved to make sure her Senior Sister recuperated well.
The two of them were currently in a small seaside town. The mortal realm naturally had thin spiritual energy, and in this remote place, the spiritual energy was almost non-existent. If they wanted to recuperate, they definitely needed to find a place with richer spiritual energy.
And the safest place they could find… after some thought, there was only one—the Imperial City.
The small town was a three to five day journey from the Imperial City. They found a horse carriage, and the two began their journey in the mortal realm.
Yu Huang only had spirit stones from the cultivation world, not mortal currency. Fortunately, Lin Wuxi’s storage pouch contained many mortal world items. She could take one out to exchange for some silver, finally avoiding the embarrassment of not being able to pay.
However, Lin Wuxi looked at Yu Huang with a suspicious gaze. How did she afford the inn if she had no money?
Sensing Lin Wuxi’s suspicious gaze, Yu Huang turned her head away, refusing to say.
Lin Wuxi looked closely, and noticed that the jade hairpin was missing from Yu Huang’s hair.
“Senior Sister, you didn’t… exchange your jade hairpin for money, did you?” Lin Wuxi asked.
Yu Huang didn’t speak, which meant she agreed.
Heavens, using a third-rank magic artifact to exchange for mortal world silver… her senior sister is truly generous. Even if it wasn’t my money, I’d feel the pinch.
“Then what should we do?” Yu Huang glared at Lin Wuxi, annoyed. Was she supposed to let her beg on the streets?
Lin Wuxi knew her senior sister was doing all this for her, and her heart warmed. Her senior sister always seemed so cold and aloof; she hadn’t expected her to care so much.
The carriage ride was bumpy. It was certainly less comfortable than flying on swords as cultivators did, but their situation left them no choice but to endure it without being picky.
The carriage had traveled half the journey. Signs of people on the road grew scarce, and the coachman’s expression became serious as he kept muttering to them.
“This area hasn’t been safe lately, young ladies. You must be careful. If this weren’t the only road to the small town, I would have definitely taken a detour with you.”
“Business has been bad recently, and the world is getting more chaotic. Small, remote towns like ours don’t have officials to manage things. But don’t you two ladies worry. If we unfortunately run into bandits, they’re usually just after money. Your safety should be fine.”
As he spoke, more than ten burly men holding sabers rushed out from the mountains on both sides, surrounding them. They shouted, “Hand over your money and valuables, and we might spare your lives!”
Is this what they call a jinx? Lin Wuxi thought.
The coachman’s face turned pale with fright. Trembling, he handed over all his money, then squatted beside the carriage with his head down, hoping to quickly send the bandits on their way.
“You two inside, are you looking to die? We’ll give you three seconds! Hand over your valuables, or don’t blame us for not being polite!”
“Move aside,” Lin Wuxi said.
The bandits exchanged a look, then one shouted, “You’re asking for it!” He raised his saber and lunged at the carriage.
The carriage jolted as more than ten bandits escorted Lin Wuxi and Yu Huang towards their mountain stronghold.
It was quite a coincidence. Just as a bandit lifted the carriage curtain, saber raised to strike, he saw the faces of the two women inside. His blade stopped a mere inch from their heads. If we bring such beauties back to the stronghold, he thought, how much reward will the Chief give us?
And so, the bandits, driven by greed, suppressed their urge to kill. They tied up the two women, planning to take them back to the stronghold as offerings for their Chief.
At first, the bandit leader only thought they were exceptionally beautiful. But after observing them on the road, he felt more and more that something was off. These two were too beautiful. Even hardened bandits like them, who had killed countless people, felt their breath catch in their throats just looking at them. Especially one of them; he had just carefully glanced at her, and her presence alone made him feel an urge to kneel and worship. If he hadn’t pinched himself hard in time, he might have embarrassed himself in front of so many of his men.
The more he thought and looked, the stranger it felt. Those faces, so beautiful they seemed otherworldly, made the bandit leader think he had seen demons. An idea flashed in his mind. He raised his saber and roared, “Demons, face your death!” He slashed towards the two women who had narrowly dodged his blade moments before.
Lin Wuxi and Yu Huang didn’t even spare him a glance. However, the other dozen or so bandits who had been watching were startled. One used his saber to block the attack, while the others quickly restrained their leader, who was still shouting “Demons!” and trying to attack.
“Scarface, are you crazy? Didn’t we say we were taking them to the Chief?”
“No, no, no! They’re demons! Demons! If we don’t kill them, we’ll all die!”
The young man holding Scarface down chopped the back of his neck. The bandit leader, still yelling about demons, immediately fainted.
“Brothers, let’s go! We’ll take these two beauties back and get our reward!”
Ahead, cooking smoke was faintly visible; it seemed they were about to reach the stronghold. The young man who had knocked out Scarface suddenly stopped. “Brothers…”
The man walking at the front turned, his face still flushed with excitement from the anticipated reward. “I just realized… these two women are truly very beautiful…”
“Perhaps Scarface wasn’t wrong. Maybe they really are demons. We can’t just bring demons back to the stronghold, right?”
“So… before we go back, perhaps we can… test them for the Chief. He definitely won’t blame us…”
Everyone swallowed hard. Hearing this, they looked up, their eyes gleaming as they stared at Lin Wuxi and Yu Huang.
The young man smirked and began to undress. “Just as you’re all thinking.”
When Scarface woke up, night had fallen. He was lying not far from the stronghold. He stood up, furious, and went to find the young man who had knocked him out earlier, vowing to teach him a lesson.
Scarface soon found him—nearby, along with the other dozen or so men, all lying in pools of blood.
Terrified, Scarface collapsed to the ground. The two incomparably beautiful faces from the carriage flashed in his mind. “Demons! The demons killed them!”
Panicked, Scarface scrambled to his feet and rushed towards the stronghold.
All the fierce bandits in the stronghold were gone. The brave and invincible Chief was also gone. They had all fallen at the stronghold gate, in a massive pool of blood. Just like the men outside, their throats had all been slit by a sword.
On the ground in front, four words were written in fresh blood: “Retribution has come.”
Scarface fainted at the stronghold gate.
