At the Cloud Sect outpost on Sunset Floating Island.
A wisp of smoke curled upwards, mirroring the hazy mist of dusk on the landscape screen.
Wei Yunshu held a jade slip, her eyes repeatedly scanning its contents. The message was brief, tracing the origin of the “Taiyi Sword” rumor. Numerous converging streams of information ultimately pointed to the Luoshui Divine Palace. Both the “shadow impressions” of the Taiyi Sword and the vividly painted stories originated from there. The final construction of the rumors, however, was the work of every cultivator who enjoyed “adding spice.”
The “Taiyi Sword” was not in the hands of that evil cultivator at all.
Did the Luoshui Divine Palace, which spread the news, not know this? Yet, they still released this information. Was it to lure Luo Lingfeng into a trap? Those who were unaware saw Luo Lingfeng as originating from the Luoshui Divine Palace and assumed she would protect her maternal clan. However, Wei Yunshu knew best that Luo Lingfeng’s relationship with the Luoshui Divine Palace was as strained as it could possibly be. At the time, she harbored a poison known as “Heart-Corroding Guile.” Wei Yunshu investigated this matter, only to discover that this poison was administered by Luo Hengjun. Not only Luo Lingfeng, but his other offspring were also similarly afflicted.
Perhaps having heard too many stories of children killing their fathers, the historically absurd Palace Lord of Luoshui, upon the birth of each of his children, planted a poison within them to firmly control them. How could such a “father” not evoke hatred? Yet, to this day, only Luo Lingfeng had managed to break free from the Luoshui Divine Palace. As for the others, they were preoccupied with inheriting the vast sect, willing to endure anything for it.
Although she knew Luo Lingfeng was capable of dealing with that mob, Wei Yunshu was unsure if Luo Hengjun, a Cavern Heaven grand cultivator, was involved. If they were to shamelessly plot against Luo Lingfeng, then the possibility of Luo Lingfeng’s Nascent Soul avatar being scattered would be greater. And if Luo Lingfeng were to meet misfortune at the Luoshui Divine Palace, Cloud City would also likely be in disarray. In the past, she had dispatched many disciples and subordinate sects to the Northern Continent defense line to stand guard. If there were any pretexts, they might be recalled. With half of the Four Great Powers of the Fu Li Immortal Realm embroiled in civil war, wouldn’t that be an excellent opportunity for the Corridor of Sins to break through the defense line?
As for Luo Lingfeng, to be frank, Wei Yunshu did not wish for her to meet with misfortune.
Past memories always remained in her heart. She had learned benevolence from the young Luo Lingfeng, but Luo Lingfeng herself had lost her way on the path of cultivation.
Things had changed, and people were no longer the same; it had come to this.
Wei Yunshu pondered for a moment, put the jade slip into her sleeve, and then got up to leave the room. Numerous pavilions were scattered, bathed in the crimson sunlight, reflecting a grandeur and magnificence. It was her first time here, and she didn’t know where Luo Lingfeng was. She quickly found a disciple to ask for directions. The disciple, knowing she was brought by Luo Lingfeng, set aside his task and led her forward. Who would have thought that halfway there, she would encounter a familiar person – Yun Dan.
“Fellow Daoist Yun.” Wei Yunshu politely paid her respects to Yun Dan. Her gaze lingered for only a moment before shifting away; she truly did not wish to see that face so similar to her own.
Yun Dan frowned.
Wei Yunshu’s appearance sent alarm bells ringing in her heart. She truly couldn’t understand how this person, who had already departed, could reappear. She knew that Luo Lingfeng had intended to keep her back then, but she had refused. Could it just be a small trick of feigning reluctance to achieve her aims? Was her target actually the same as hers? Thinking this, Yun Dan’s expression inevitably darkened. The initial politeness towards a fellow cultivator transformed into a subtle hostility. She returned the greeting according to etiquette, but did not say much to Wei Yunshu. Instead, she turned her head, glared at the disciple who was leading the way, and reprimanded him with a stern face, “Weren’t you ordered to go to the defense line? Why are you still here?”
The disciple apologized and then eagerly turned to leave.
On the bluestone path, in the blink of an eye, only Wei Yunshu and Yun Dan remained.
Wei Yunshu understood Yun Dan’s thoughts and found it secretly amusing. However, she did not wish to clash with this favored disciple of Luo Lingfeng, so she smiled gently and inquired, “Where is True Monarch Luo?”
Yun Dan uttered, “As expected.” She slightly raised her eyes, a hint of disdain flowing through them. With no one else around, she no longer needed to feign politeness. Thus, wearing that face so similar to Wei Yunshu’s, she said imperiously, “My Master is in seclusion and cannot see external guests. If Fellow Daoist Bo has something to convey, I can pass it on.”
Wei Yunshu’s experiences were considered rough compared to those of disciples from noble families. However, she had not strayed from the path because of it. Even after becoming the ruler of Cloud City, she still embraced virtue and harmony, promoting peace throughout the land. She lacked the sharp edges and arrogance of disciples from major clans. Of course, such gentleness was also seen as incompetence and hypocrisy by some. But on Yun Dan’s face, that warmth like a spring breeze had completely dissipated.
Wei Yunshu said faintly, “The matter is of great importance, and I’m afraid it cannot be handled by Fellow Daoist.”
Yun Dan’s annoyance intensified at Wei Yunshu’s attitude. She held a prestigious identity as Luo Lingfeng’s registered disciple, but it was merely for show. Even she could not act as she pleased, seeing Luo Lingfeng whenever she wished. Who was Bo Fengliu? Just a stray cultivator one could find anywhere on the street! Was it her place to see her Master whenever she pleased? Her dislike grew even stronger. Yun Dan simply took out her command sword and snorted coldly, “My Master has already handed over all matters here to me for full handling.”
Wei Yunshu smiled at Yun Dan, as if she hadn’t heard her challenging words, and said blandly, “True Monarch Luo is unavailable today, so this humble Daoist will visit another day.” Saying this, she turned to leave.
“It seems this matter is unrelated to the Sunset Burial Mounds,” Yun Dan did not want Wei Yunshu to leave just like that. She raised her voice slightly, “My Master has a kind nature and would not refuse you. Thus, I will be the villain. The Chaos Tree has undergone changes, and the defense line at the Sunset Burial Mounds is critical. I hope Fellow Daoist Bo will prioritize the greater good and not pester my Master with trivial matters.”
Luo Lingfeng has a kind nature?
If it were Wei Yunshu from three years ago, she would have nodded repeatedly, wishing she could bestow all the flattering words in the world upon her. But now, hearing Yun Dan’s inexplicable tone, she only felt like laughing out loud. How many people in this world had been deceived by Luo Lingfeng’s facade?
Yun Dan stomped her foot, annoyance pursing her lips, as she watched Wei Yunshu’s figure disappear into the overlapping tree shadows, completely out of sight. She reached out and stroked the command sword, a dark gleam flashing in her eyes. She squeezed out the meager spiritual energy in her dantian and, using the command sword, sent an order to the Cloud Sect disciples: “Henceforth, no unauthorized personnel are allowed to enter the inner perimeter of the outpost.”
Wei Yunshu paid no mind to Yun Dan’s actions.
She moved through the Cloud Sect outpost, with a hint of leisure, admiring the plants and flowers swaying along the roadside. This place was near the Chaos Tree. Ultimately, it had been influenced by the overwhelming demonic energy from the Northern Continent, supporting few plants. But precisely because of this, the plants that grew from danger seemed even more endearing. The living beings of heaven and earth, who wasn’t striving?
The breeze stirred her whisk, and Wei Yunshu was so engrossed in nature that she momentarily lost herself. When she came back to her senses, she realized she was no longer on the path she had taken. She looked up to see a serene pond, with over ten green stones held up by spiritual energy, stretching towards a pavilion in the center of the pond. Someone was playing a zither, but the melody was blocked by a barrier, not a single note escaping.
Wei Yunshu stopped at the edge of the pond. Looking down, she saw a slender waist reflected in the clear water.
But this figure was immediately shattered by a splashing green cup that fell from the sky. Water droplets splashed, and ripples spread outwards.
“Since you’re here, won’t you have a drink?” Luo Lingfeng’s clear, jade-like voice reached her ears.
When she was searching, she found no trace of her. Now, when she was not intentionally seeking, they met again. Was it fate? Or perhaps a calamity?
