Yun Dan stared intently at Wei Yunshu.
She hadn’t taken this person seriously at first. After all, in her opinion, she was just a casual, unremarkable Golden Core cultivator. With Luo Lingfeng’s discerning eye, she wouldn’t possibly be interested in her. Yet, things didn’t go as expected; Luo Lingfeng’s attitude towards her was particularly special. This gave her a sense of unease, always feeling that this person would be an uncertain factor disrupting her plans. In the past, she would have acted directly. But now that she was a disciple of an immortal sect, she couldn’t resort to those cultivation techniques anymore.
After a moment, Yun Dan’s eyes flickered. She smiled at Wei Yunshu and said, “Daoist Friend Bo, do you have any plans for this trip? The matter concerns the Taiyi Sword, and it’s likely not peaceful at the Sunset Burial Mounds.”
Wei Yunshu said calmly, “The Corridor of Sins has not been eliminated. Where can true tranquility be found?”
Yun Dan nodded and smiled, “Indeed. Daoist friend, why not travel with us Cloud City disciples?”
Wei Yunshu looked up to meet Yun Dan’s gaze. She caught a trace of malice in her eyes and said expressionlessly, “Daoist friend is joking.” Firstly, the True Monarch of Luo Lingfeng was present. Even without Luo Lingfeng, she would not have any further ties with Cloud City. This matter might not be Luo Lingfeng’s idea. If it were this person acting on her own initiative—had she reached a point where she could make decisions?
Yun Dan breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing Wei Yunshu’s refusal. She was actually afraid of Wei Yunshu accompanying her, wishing in her heart that this person would go far away. She showed no sign of this on her face, only feigning regret. “Daoist Friend Bo is unwilling to travel together, so I cannot force you. However, since we have met, it is fated. I have an item bestowed by my master, and I wish to lend it to Daoist friend for protection.” Saying this, she took out a palm-sized square token from her sleeve. “This is the Jade Coral Token, capable of withstanding three attacks from Golden Core cultivators.”
Wei Yunshu was at the Golden Core realm, so this token wasn’t of great use to her. She stared intently at Yun Dan, not reaching out to accept the token.
Seeing her like this, Yun Dan smiled again. “Daoist friend, please rest assured. This matter has been approved by my master. Earlier, Daoist friend intercepted and killed evil cultivators in Funeral Heaven Pass, which was a great help to our Cloud City. If Daoist friend does not accept it, we can only repay the favor elsewhere.”
Favors were the most difficult to repay. Cultivators feared the karma that arose from them. If she held onto this small favor, it would evoke a sense of “insatiable greed.” Wei Yunshu understood the unspoken meaning behind Yun Dan’s words and scoffed inwardly. “Since that is the case, this humble Daoist will not be polite.” Saying this, she reached out and took the Jade Coral Token. Then, feigning nonchalance, she added, “It was Daoist Xie and I who joined forces to eliminate that evil cultivator.”
Yun Dan’s face stiffened.
She spoke of “repayment,” but she had come specifically for Wei Yunshu, not considering Xie Zhichao’s situation at all. But since Wei Yunshu had brought it up, she couldn’t possibly leave out that Buzhou disciple. So she raised her eyebrows and smiled, “Of course, Daoist Xie will not be forgotten.”
Wei Yunshu nodded, immediately signaling her intention to see Yun Dan out.
Yun Dan understood her expression. Since she had achieved her goal, she wisely took her leave.
Wei Yunshu returned to her pavilion. She did not put away the Jade Coral Token but held it in her hand, examining it carefully. This was indeed a spiritual artifact capable of blocking three attacks, but it contained a wisp of strange energy. Every time the jade token was activated, it would entangle one’s own vital energy with the strange energy, thus defiling the Dharma body. The person who originally refined the jade token certainly did not have such malicious intentions. So, who had added it? Wei Yunshu first thought of Luo Lingfeng, but then she considered that with her cultivation, the items she refined couldn’t be so crude. Was it Yun Dan? But she was only at the Mortal Transformation stage; she hadn’t reached such a cultivation level. She had originally intended to remove this strange energy, but after careful consideration, she felt she shouldn’t. It was better to keep it. With a light laugh, she put away the Jade Coral Token.
On the other side, after returning, Yun Dan casually summoned a disciple and asked her to fetch some jade pills and deliver them to Xie Zhichao.
Although her actions were not in accordance with the rules, the disciple saw that she was Luo Lingfeng’s registered disciple and dared not say anything more. She meekly agreed and then returned to her pavilion refreshed to meditate. However, not long after, a paper crane flew through the window and said coldly, “Master requests your presence.”
Since being dismissed earlier, Yun Dan had not seen Luo Lingfeng. Hearing her master summon her now, she immediately got up and eagerly followed the paper crane. She knew there were many people in Cloud City who were in a similar situation to her. If she didn’t seize the opportunity to spend time with Luo Lingfeng, she feared she would soon be forgotten.
Lotus leaves swayed in the pool in the gentle breeze, and crystal-clear dewdrops rolled about. In this pavilion with its own unique dimension, misty water vapor swirled. The appearance of Luo Lingfeng, seated cross-legged on the futon, was even more blurred. Although only a few steps away, it felt as if she were thousands of miles away.
Yun Dan dared not look too long and quickly lowered her head, bowing in a curtsy. “Disciple greets Master.”
Luo Lingfeng asked casually, “Where were you earlier?”
Her tone was casual, but even so, Yun Dan felt immense pressure. Luo Lingfeng’s attitude towards her was even less favorable than on the day she accepted her as a disciple. She felt somewhat flustered and, losing her train of thought, replied weakly, “Disciple was meditating and did not go anywhere.” But the moment the words left her mouth, she regretted them. Not to mention deceiving Luo Lingfeng, even any ordinary Cloud City disciple would not be able to hide their whereabouts from her. Had she not concealed her movements at all? Could it be the influence of the item that altered her cultivation? But to enter Cloud City, she had no choice but to use it.
Luo Lingfeng said lightly, “Is that so?”
Cold sweat trickled down Yun Dan’s forehead. She quickly knelt, flustered, and said, “Disciple knows her mistake. Disciple went to see Daoist Bo.”
Luo Lingfeng then asked, “And why did you go there?”
Yun Dan replied, “Earlier, Daoist Bo and the others helped in Funeral Heaven Pass, and this disciple felt that their help deserved some gratitude. So, disciple gave Daoist Bo the Jade Coral Token bestowed by Master.”
“Disciple acted on her own accord. Disciple asks Master to punish her.”
Luo Lingfeng said indifferently, “You are truly thinking for my Cloud City.”
Yun Dan did not respond, only kneeling on the ground, not daring to say more.
Luo Lingfeng’s voice was neither joyful nor sorrowful. With a wave of her hand, she said, “You may withdraw.” She was too lazy to guess the thoughts of this cheap disciple. She had initially thought this person was the most similar to Wei Yunshu, but after interacting for a few days, she found this person to be full of affectation. She tried to approach the Wei Yunshu of the rumors, but all of that was merely a reflection and projection of the world’s ideals, not a real person.
She was not Wei Yunshu, and she could not be Wei Yunshu.
But soon, if the Taiyi Sword was truly at the Sunset Burial Mounds, then the truth of Wei Yunshu’s life and death would be revealed.
Her physical body was sealed in the forbidden area of Cloud City. If there was even a wisp of a remnant soul, there would be a way to guide her back.
However, this matter would have to wait until the Chaos Tree and the Luoshui Divine Palace were dealt with before it could truly begin.
No need to rush, no need to be impatient.
When she found the answer, perhaps the demons that trapped her would disappear?
Or perhaps, she needed to find the heart she had lost?
Wei Yunshu.
Luo Lingfeng silently uttered these three words, pressing her hand to her chest, which inexplicably ached. Her beautiful face inexplicably showed a twisted hatred, and her usually calm eyes churned with turbulent waves. The water in the pool rippled, and countless water droplets surged upwards, splashing like falling rain.
After a long while, Luo Lingfeng’s breathing calmed, and the malice in her eyes receded. She knitted her brows tightly and looked down at her hands, laughing self-mockingly. “Ungrateful, that’s exactly what it is.”
She thought she had never gotten close to Wei Yunshu, but only after the other person disappeared did she suddenly realize that her surroundings were filled with traces of her.
The more she tried to erase them, the deeper the traces became. They could not be erased, forgotten, or let go.
