Yue Jin finally managed to convince herself.
It was just sharing a room. Nothing was going to happen, so there wouldn’t be any big problems.
But when night fell, she saw Fu Lingyi lying on the bed, propped up on one elbow, lifting a corner of the quilt and patting the bed.
At that moment, she desperately wanted to bolt out the door and sleep on the grass outside.
That would be a little more reassuring.
“Where are you going?” Fu Lingyi called out to her. “If you like sleeping outside, go ahead. It’s freezing cold, I won’t stop you.”
Yue Jin stopped her stealthy steps.
Actually, the coldest part of the year had already passed. The snow had stopped long ago, and there was a hint of early spring in the air.
But it was still cold outside.
She walked over, her tone full of negotiation. “Fu, ah, no, Lingyi… We aren’t even married yet. Isn’t sleeping in the same bed a bit improper…”
The person on the bed was wearing only an inner garment, the collar wide open. Her ink-black hair cascaded down her back, with just a few strands resting on her chest, creating a subtly suggestive atmosphere.
Yue Jin quickly averted her eyes.
Fu Lingyi lay sideways, tapping the bed with a single finger of her other hand, her expression indifferent. “Didn’t realize you were so particular about this. You weren’t so particular when you were joking and fooling around with the other disciples.”
“How can they be the same as you?” Yue Jin hadn’t expected her to say that and scrambled to find a way to salvage the situation. “You are like a high mountain snow lotus, pure and pristine. If I were to even touch you, I would feel guilty! Besides, I’m a terrible sleeper. What if I accidentally kick you in the night? That wouldn’t be good, right? Hahahaha.”
She gave an awkward laugh. The sound echoed, and the air seemed to freeze.
For a long moment, Fu Lingyi just watched her without speaking, making her feel uneasy.
Her finger tapped the bed, once, twice.
Although there was no sound, it felt as if she was tapping on Yue Jin’s heart, each tap a startle.
“Lingyi,” Yue Jin couldn’t help it and broke the silence. “Tell me, what if I accidentally kick you off the bed? Will you beat me up?”
“It’s fine.”
Fu Lingyi’s eyes were deep. “I’ll sleep on the inside, you sleep on the outside.”
“…You still haven’t said if you’ll beat me up.”
“Of course not,” Fu Lingyi smiled brightly. “Come here.”
That single word was like a summons. Yue Jin felt pulled by a string, walking forward and sitting on the edge of the bed.
The bamboo bed creaked. The quilt was woven from demon beast down, and sitting on it was very warm.
Fu Lingyi lay down a bit more, propping her head with one hand, and lifted the quilt a little further. “Take off your clothes.”
Yue Jin stared blankly. “How much?”
“Stop talking nonsense, hurry.”
She quickly turned her back and took off her outer robe. Her jade token was placed close to her body, hidden near her heart.
Finally, she took off her shoes and slipped under the quilt.
They were very close, so close she could feel breathing on her face.
Fu Lingyi lay on her side next to Yue Jin. Sensing her body was stiff, she reached out a hand, gently patted her, and murmured.
“Sleep.”
Then, she closed her eyes.
However, Yue Jin couldn’t fall asleep. She kept her arms by her sides, her body stiff and unmoving. She didn’t even dare to turn over or lie on her side.
Afraid of waking Fu Lingyi.
Moonlight spilled into the room, shining on the bed. She could see the hand resting on her, still patting her little by little.
Like comforting a child to sleep.
Yue Jin used both hands, gently lifted the hand, and placed it back in its original position.
Before long, the hand came back. Not only that, Fu Lingyi even shifted her entire body closer, crossing the line and sleeping on the edge of Yue Jin’s pillow.
“Lingyi… I’m about to be pushed off the bed.”
Yue Jin wanted to cry but had no tears. The more Fu Lingyi moved over, the more Yue Jin retreated towards the outside. She was already at the edge of the bed; any further retreat would send her to the floor.
“Mmm…” Fu Lingyi responded. The hand resting on Yue Jin moved forward, grasping her waist, and pulled her back.
Yue Jin was dragged back. Before she could react, she felt her forehead press against something soft.
Once she realized what it was, her face instantly flushed red.
Her waist was held, and half her body was tucked into Fu Lingyi’s embrace, held tightly. She couldn’t struggle free.
“…Fu Lingyi,” Yue Jin struggled, her face red, trying to avoid that spot and pushing on her shoulders. “You… let go.”
Fu Lingyi wasn’t awake at all; she just hugged tighter.
Just like that, the night passed.
When she woke up the next morning, the blush on Yue Jin’s face hadn’t faded, and her eyes were dark. It seemed she hadn’t slept at all.
Ever since they started living together, Fu Lingyi’s annoyance level had risen another notch.
“The people from the Medicine King Valley will arrive today, darling. Do you want to get ready?”
Fu Lingyi scooped a spoonful of rice from her bowl, added a piece of dish with her chopsticks, blew on it, and then offered it to Yue Jin.
“Ah… open your mouth.”
“Fu Lingyi.”
Fu Lingyi looked up at her. “It’s Lingyi. You’re not allowed to call me by my full name.”
Yue Jin closed her eyes for a moment, silently reminding herself that she couldn’t win against Fu Lingyi and had to control her temper. With her last bit of stubbornness, she refused to use the requested name. “What are you doing?”
“Open your mouth,” Fu Lingyi coaxed, shaking the spoon. “Otherwise it will get cold, and cold food isn’t tasty. I made it for quite a while.”
“No, I’m not a child! I don’t want to be fed!”
“Just try one bite.”
Her tone allowed no argument. Yue Jin turned her head away, simply refusing.
Fu Lingyi changed direction and offered the spoon again. “Just try it. I’m sure the food I made this time is better than last time.”
“Please.”
Seeing her tone soften, Yue Jin glanced sideways and pursed her lips. “Fine, just one bite.”
After saying that, she opened her mouth.
Tao Lan happily ran into the courtyard. Seeing their door open, she peeked in curiously from the doorway. “Sisters, can I come in?”
She looked around and saw Yue Jin at the table eating the food Fu Lingyi fed her, her cheeks puffed out as she chewed. The other woman chuckled softly, scooped another spoonful, and coaxed her again.
Tao Lan was shocked.
She ran inside and pounced on Yue Jin. “Wooden Sister, have you turned back into wood? Can’t you move your hands?”
“What nonsense are you talking about?” Yue Jin looked down at her and tugged on the little braid on her head – the one Fu Lingyi had braided for her early that morning. “My hands are perfectly fine, look.”
Tao Lan looked her over carefully, confirming she was alright, and then climbed off her. A hint of mischief appeared in her eyes.
“Oh, Wooden Sister is so big, yet she still needs Sister Fu to feed her! Shame, shame!”
“I didn’t!” Yue Jin quickly waved her hands. “It was, it was Fu Lingyi acting crazy and insisting on feeding me! I couldn’t refuse, that’s why…”
“I’m going to tell Sister Feng and Sister Yun!” Tao Lan gloated, darting out the door. “I don’t even need to be fed anymore, but Wooden Sister still does! I’m going to tell the other sisters!”
“Hey, come back!”
Yue Jin was about to stop her, but Fu Lingyi, who was laughing uncontrollably behind her, hugged her and kept her from chasing. “Go on, Tao Lan. I’ll hold this piece of wood for you.”
“It’s all your fault!” she said angrily after breaking free, turning her back and refusing to look at Fu Lingyi. “My entire reputation has been ruined by you just like this.”
Fu Lingyi tilted her head, her eyes stirred, watching Yue Jin’s back. “What reputation?”
“Of course, it’s my lifelong reputation outside…” Halfway through, Yue Jin realized she had almost spilled the beans. Cold sweat dripped down her back, and she quickly changed her words. “My reputation is well-known. All the disciples of the Chongxiang Sword Sect know I am free-spirited and independent, never relying on anyone.”
“Oh… then your ‘outside’ sphere must be quite small.”
“Anyway, anyway, I can feed myself,” Yue Jin snatched the bowl, clutching it to her chest, and glared at her. “You’re not allowed to feed me.”
“No, you can’t. What if you burn yourself eating?” Fu Lingyi faced her, saying this with an unchanging expression. She snatched the bowl back from Yue Jin and started picking up food again.
“Come, open your mouth.”
Throughout the side peak of the Chongxiang Sword Sect , Yue Jin’s resistant shouts echoed.
Tao Lan kept running, passing by the entrance to Yun Lingyue’s courtyard. The large gate was closed tightly, with not a single sound coming from within.
Ever since she arrived at the Chongxiang Sword Sect , she had been left in Feng Ruiyan’s care and hadn’t seen Yun Lingyue in a long time.
Tao Lan always remembered the gentle older sister who had rescued her from that place of suffering.
She pushed the courtyard gate forcefully but found it wouldn’t open. So she ran to a nearby corner, stepped on a stone, and prepared to climb over.
The spiritual plants in the courtyard were growing a bit wild. It looked like they hadn’t been cared for in a long time.
“Sister Yun, are you there?” After being mischievous, Tao Lan belatedly felt scared. She slowly walked inside and pushed open the main house door.
“Sister Yun…”
No one answered.
The windows in the house were tightly shut, closed so completely that not a sliver of light came through.
Tao Lan puffed out her cheeks, leaned half her body inside, and peered around.
“Who’s there!”
A powerful shout startled her, making her nearly lose her balance and fall to the ground.
“I, I…” She couldn’t even finish her words, just repeating “I, I, I.”
The person from inside the house walked out. Seeing who was in front of her, she breathed a sigh of relief. “It’s you.”
Tao Lan blinked her eyes and looked up at her.
Yun Lingyue no longer had her former vitality.
She looked haggard at the moment, her eyes indifferent. She wore an outer robe draped loosely around her, her hair unbound and falling straight down.
“Why are you here? Isn’t Feng Ruiyan taking good care of you?”
Tao Lan: “Sister Yun…”
The girl’s clear voice calling out “Sister Yun” made Yun Lingyue feel momentarily disoriented.
She seemed to see a little girl with white hair, slightly shorter than her, sweetly calling her Sister.
“Sister, you told me all the demonic cultivators were dead. I only believe Sister.”
“Sister, you’ll definitely protect me and keep me from being bullied by the demonic cultivators again, right?”
“I’m not scared. With Sister here, I won’t be scared at all.”
Warm tears traced paths down her cheeks, slid past her chin, and fell to the ground.
She had broken her promise.
Yun Lingyue leaned against the doorframe, listless. In her hand, she was tightly clutching something.
“Sister Yun!” Tao Lan rushed over to support her, pulled out a handkerchief, and wiped her tears. “Sister Yun, are you alright?”
Yun Lingyue pushed her away and shook her head.
“I’m sorry, I don’t have the energy to be with you right now. Go find Feng Ruiyan. I might, I might…” She was walking back into the house, but before she finished speaking, her body swayed, and she collapsed against the doorframe again.
“Sister Yun.”
Tao Lan tightly clutched the handkerchief and looked up. “Sister Feng said someone important to you passed away, right?”
Yun Lingyue hadn’t yet opened her mouth to tell her to leave when she suddenly remembered that this child’s entire family had been slaughtered.
So, she slowly turned her gaze back.
