“Why is it always like this!” Wu Bei quickly hid under the bed, grumbling inwardly. As long as she comes, Fu Lingyi will definitely come. Are those two bound by some special relationship? And I have to hide under the bed every time!
The loosely closed door of the bamboo house was pushed open, and Fu Lingyi walked in. Her attention was entirely on the bed, not sparing a glance elsewhere.
Yue Jin was pretending to sleep with her eyes closed, breaking out in a cold sweat. Her acting was clumsy, and she was very worried about being seen through. She was even more worried about the two of them facing each other with nothing to say.
Fu Lingyi stood by the bed, staring at her face for a long time. The air around them seemed to solidify and spread, concealing a subtly cloying atmosphere.
Wu Bei’s legs were sore from crouching. Finally, she heard the person standing gently ask, “You’re awake, why aren’t you getting up?”
As expected, she couldn’t fool her; she’d been discovered.
Yue Jin slowly opened her eyes. Her voice was barely audible. “…I’m afraid you’ll blame me.”
“Blame you for what?”
“Blame me for not standing outside as punishment, but instead sleeping in your bed.”
Fu Lingyi pursed her lips. She seemed angry, yet also helpless. “Do I look like someone who shows no mercy?”
Yue Jin pouted. They really started clashing after just a couple of sentences. Besides, she didn’t understand her very well.
Yue Jin wanted to avoid further arguments, so she lifted the covers and got out of bed, planning to return to her own room. However, her body hadn’t fully recovered; she was still a bit shaky and almost lost her balance.
“Where are you going?” Fu Lingyi grabbed hold of her, supporting her. “You were frozen almost senseless yesterday; what else are you planning to do?”
At this remark, Yue Jin flew into a rage. She shook off the hand that was holding her, turning her head away indifferently. “What do you mean ‘do what’? You’ve decided I did something, haven’t you?”
“I… you misunderstand, I didn’t mean that…”
“I just don’t want to stay here, staining your eyes,” Yue Jin interrupted forcefully, becoming more harsh with every word. The grievances she suffered yesterday welled up in her heart, spilling out all at once. “Anyway, I must have been unconscious to end up sleeping here. I’ll just leave then. Or rather, does your Chongxiang Sword Sect have any other punishments you want to use on me? Like a whip…”
She suddenly fell silent, realizing she had said the wrong thing.
Fu Lingyi’s expression instantly turned grim. Her gaze dimmed, and all her unspoken words were held in her eyes.
She looked at the person in front of her, her voice faint, carrying a trace of almost imperceptible hurt. “I thought, back then, you genuinely cared about me.”
Now it was Yue Jin’s turn to stammer.
“I…”
“Don’t say any more, that kind of thing isn’t important now,” Fu Lingyi turned her head away, clearly not intending to listen to her explanation. “Chongxiang Sword Sect doesn’t have punishments, at least not when I’m in charge. If you still refuse to talk about what happened last night, then you’ll be like the other disciples and go feed Master’s spirit beasts.”
“I actually…”
“Keep walking west and you’ll get there. There’s food on the stove in the herbal medicine room. Eat before you go.”
Yue Jin stood without moving. Fu Lingyi sat down, poured herself a cup of tea, and clearly implied she wanted her to leave. “What, aren’t you leaving yet?”
Yue Jin hesitated. She wanted to explain herself, to flare up in anger again, but no matter how she thought about it, she felt she was in the wrong. She had no choice but to leave.
The room fell silent. Wu Bei was still under the bed, screaming inwardly. What about me? I can’t get out! How could these two forget about her while they were arguing!
A drop of water slipped from above and dropped onto the ground. Wu Bei was a bit surprised. She had a suspicion and slowly poked her head out from under the bed to look.
She saw Fu Lingyi alone, her back to the bed, sitting propped on her elbows and quietly shedding tears. That figure’s back showed extreme sadness.
Yue Jin went to the herbal medicine room first. She had thought Fu Lingyi might have made her food, but she didn’t know there would be so much.
Plates of dishes were laid out on the stove, a full six or seven plates of various kinds. Most of them were warm. In the very center was a bowl of crystal clear porridge, and flipping it with chopsticks, she saw a poached egg lying inside.
The person who cooked must have been very thoughtful. Not knowing what she liked, they had made all sorts of dishes. They hadn’t even forgotten the porridge she had once requested.
Yue Jin’s mood was complicated. She tasted a bit of each dish and finished the porridge, eating her fill. She had indeed said some harsh things just now… When she went back tonight, maybe she should apologize a little.
Master Yi Qing’s spirit beasts were all violent demon beasts difficult to control. Every disciple’s most hated chore was coming to feed and care for them.
So when they heard Yue Jin was here to take over, they all cheered joyfully, threw down the feed and the instructions, and thronged away. Before leaving, they didn’t forget to tell her:
“Sister, there’s an Reverse Scale Owl locked deep in the mountain. Just put its food on the ground and leave immediately, absolutely do not linger. It’s especially fierce and has injured several of our disciples.”
Yue Jin shrugged it off. Perhaps feeling a bit guilty, she was obediently doing the work, though she mixed in some fun – picking up a snake to shake it for a bit, or pulling a bird by its leg to keep it from flying.
Master Yi Qing loved collecting strange spirit beasts; many Yue Jin had never even heard of. As she walked deeper into the mountain, the spirit beasts became fewer, and the forest grew more tranquil.
She stopped in front of a chain. Tethered to the end of the chain was a spirit beast covered all over in scales. It looked like a giant chicken with a pointed beak. The scales grew backwards, and even with a slight breath, you could feel the heat as they opened – it was very intimidating. It must be that Reverse Scale Owl.
The Reverse Scale Owl saw her and let out a disdainful snort from its beak. It stomped its feet, making the ground shake several times.
“Behave yourself,” Yue Jin said, picking up the feed bucket in her hand and deliberately shaking it. “I’m feeding you, so I’m your master. You’d better be obedient, or you won’t get even a shred of meat.”
The Reverse Scale Owl understood. Its scales bristled, and it took on a fighting stance, very angry. But as soon as it moved, the chain emitted light, restraining its movement.
“Hmph, like I can’t handle you?” Yue Jin said with a smug, gloating expression, pouring the feed onto the ground far from its reach. “Plenty of imposing presence you’ve got, try breaking free and show me! Otherwise, you’ll go hungry today.”
The Reverse Scale Owl stared at her, moving several times without success. It was so angry it collapsed onto the ground, panting violently.
Yue Jin got bored of playing and turned to leave. “Call that a ferocious beast that hurts people? Nothing special.”
“Snap!”
A sound came from behind. She slowly turned her head, looking at the chain at the same time as the Reverse Scale Owl.
For some reason, the chain suddenly broke in the middle.
“Hahaha,” Yue Jin put her hands in front of her, looking incredibly innocent. “Oops, the weather’s so nice today, I was just kidding, you know? You wouldn’t take it seriously, would you?”
The Reverse Scale Owl let out a roar from its beak that was almost a mocking laugh.
Yue Jin turned and ran.
Its giant wings, covered in sharp scales, spread out and it soared into the sky. The spirit beast had only one target: the person running in the forest.
A flash of cold light chopped down. Yue Jin ducked towards a tree to dodge, and the tree was split in half, tilting and falling to the ground. After only a moment, the Reverse Scale Owl again raised its scales and flung them downwards.
She kept looking for cover, her face full of exasperation. I wished I could go to the Main Peak Hall and ask, Are the spirit beasts of this Chongxiang Sword Sect completely untamed?!
The Reverse Scale Owl was practically treating her as a plaything, teasing and playing. It flew in mid-air with excellent eyesight, watching the person in the forest dodge back and forth like it was a game of hide-and-seek.
Yue Jin’s left leg hadn’t fully healed to begin with, and now it was hurting terribly. She flipped over, covered herself with leaves, and circled around the ground to get behind the spirit beast.
The Reverse Scale Owl couldn’t find her, searching left and right. Just as it lowered its body to land on the ground, someone grabbed its leg from behind. Magic artifact chains wrapped around it again, restraining its movements.
Caught unaware for a moment, it was tripped and fell to the ground, the entire owl tied up.
Yue Jin was covered in dust. She climbed up, clapped her hands, and let out a fierce “Hmph!” “Even without cultivation, I can still handle you. Do you yield?”
The Reverse Scale Owl let out a loser’s wail, clearly unyielding.
Yue Jin was about to say something else when a flash of blade light brushed past her cheek and went straight into the Reverse Scale Owl’s body.
The spirit beast on the ground let out sounds of intense pain, struggling frantically. Two more flashes of blade light appeared, it opened its beak wide, completely fell to the ground, and was silent.
Yue Jin suddenly turned her head, looking towards the direction of the blade light.
In the forest, a streak of blue moved away.
“Don’t leave!” She hurriedly rushed forward to chase, but unfortunately, she couldn’t run fast and could only watch the blue figure gradually move further and further away.
“If you have guts, come out! Daring to do it but not daring to take responsibility, you’re truly a coward!”
She cursed loudly for several sentences straight, hoping to use this method to make the person stop. After all, the culprit was extremely arrogant; she definitely couldn’t stand being treated like this by others.
Sure enough, the blue figure stopped far away and turned its head back, seemingly saying something. Immediately after, it left again, this time completely disappearing from sight.
Yue Jin circled the forest searching many times but couldn’t even see that person’s shadow. She walked back discouraged, wanting to look at the spirit beast’s corpse to find some clues.
The Reverse Scale Owl lay on the ground, its scales all closed. Its eyes were half-open, blood flowing outwards in streams. Yue Jin walked over and closed its eyes for it.
A little blood stained her clothes. Somewhere on the ground glittered, attracting her sight.
That was a blade. But it wasn’t a magic artifact blade hidden in Yaoguang Pavilion; it was a regular blade. That person just now used this blade to kill the Reverse Scale Owl.
To think they just threw it here openly! Were they certain others wouldn’t be able to find her?
Yue Jin walked over and picked up the blade. Its handle was hard to grip and it was very heavy. Someone who could use this blade must be someone accustomed to using blades and swords.
It’s just… she reached out and swung it twice, feeling its cutting range. It wasn’t as easy to use as the one in Yaoguang Pavilion.
She guessed it was just found and used temporarily. That culprit had specifically followed her and even killed the spirit beast that had been chasing her. What was their intention? Surely that broken iron chain was also her doing.
Yue Jin didn’t need to dwell on it, after all, after only a moment, she understood that person’s intention.
At this very moment, Fu Lingyi was standing at the edge of the forest, looking at her with a face full of astonishment. Meanwhile, Yue Jin lowered her head and glanced at the blade in her hand, then looked at the spirit beast lying on the ground beside her.
She sighed speechlessly. Oh well, taking the blame again.
